Well the difference it's fine to accept that's a version of Godzilla, but it shouldn't be anyone's idea of what GODZILLA really is, because it objetively is the furthest Godzilla from any Godzilla depiction ever. It has no atomic breath weapon, it has very weak durability, very low destructive capability, runs from helicopters, and is an iguana.

Godzilla 98 or Zilla, the name doesn't matter to me I always liked the design as a kid growing up. Although it is funny the time first I heard the name zilla, originally was from the 98 cartoon show. So in theory Zilla is technically the baby of 98 godzilla.

At least something good came from him. Zilla got a second chance in the comics and the 1998 Godzilla is getting action figures. So it goes to show that yes the movie had its flaws but it's entertaining to watch.

1998 Godzilla will always be an incarnation I love. Not my favorite incarnation, but I still love it. It’s funny how 1998 Godzilla is more loyal to Godzilla’s actual origins than Monsterverse Godzilla. 1998 Godzilla is an animal mutated against its own will, and now because it’s so large, humanity has to kill it. It goes perfectly with Ishirō Honda’s famous quote, that being *“Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy.”*

I see it as an alt universe version of Godzilla. I can see why some people didn't like it. Emmerich took a major gamble when he went for a design and personality shift so radically different from the original. Of course the design did win over some fans, and it is unfortunate that the creature concept couldn't have continued into its own separate EU. My bigger issue with the movie was the poor comedic timing one liners and overall forced attempts at comic relief. I believe there is a fan edit floating around out there with that campiness edited out, and that it makes the movie much more enjoyable.

    Warning: Long comment up ahead.
I have a bit of an issue with the Shin Godzilla comparison. Was Shin radically different? Yes it was, and I even remember being upset about his previous forms and his new abilities when I first found out about them. However, you mentioned that the reasons people hated the 1998 Godzilla were that the atomic breath and resistance to military weapons were removed, and you're right about that. Shin, on the other hand, kept those characteristics. He still had atomic breath, and he was still mostly resistant to military weapons. Sure, he bled from bunker busters, but at least they didn't kill him. And on the topic of Godzilla dying, the cause and circumstances of Godzilla's death in 1954, vs Destoroyah, and 1998 were completely different. Godzilla 54 was killed by a super weapon said to be worse than a nuke, Burning Godzilla died from meltdown as a result of absorbing too much radiation at once, and Godzilla 1998 was killed by missiles. Comparing these deaths is like comparing apples, oranges, and tomatoes. The results may have been the same, but the causes weren't.
TL;DR: Let's compare Godzilla 98 and Shin Godzilla with subtraction and addition respectively. One took features away, while the other kept them while adding new features.
And if this sounded like I was bashing the 1998 film and its version of Godzilla, I apologize. Having been born several years after the 1998 film came out, I never harbored any hatred for it. I simply looked at it as just another version of Godzilla. I will end this comment on a positive note: a Movie Monster Series figure of the 1998 Godzilla would be pretty cool. Even if they just call it Zilla, the 2 designs are similar enough that I would gladly accept a 6 inch vinyl figure of either character.

  • @omniviewer2115

Well, as someone from the "Zilla is Godzilla 1998" crowd, I have to respond to some thing in this video. Not trying to be antagonistic, but I feel that counterarguments need to be made.
4:06 - There's a bit of a contradiction here. First you said the line from GMK is "obviously" not referencing the 1998 film, then you say that it's "clearly a nod" to the 1998 film...which means they are obviously referencing the 1998 movie. In fact, that was clearly the intention of the line.
The 1998 film not referencing the 1954 film even has a built-in explanation in GMK: so much time has passed that Godzilla has been relegated to the realm of myth...a myth like the one the name is derived from in the 1998 movie.
5:40 - The original movie retaining the name "Godzilla" doesn't really mean anything regarding this topic. There is a particular DC superhero who was originally named "Captain Marvel", but after a certain point, he was renamed "SHAZAM". However, there is a movie serial from the Forties that, when recently released on DVD and Bluray, retained "Captain Marvel" in the title. They did not alter even though the character now has a new name (and an altered design). Renaming a character does not necessarily mean everything gets retroactively altered based around that.
9:06 - I had a feeling this is why you kept bringing up the "people hate G98 because he dies at the end" argument, but here's the thing: that's not actually the argument. Everyone knows that Godzilla dies in the 1954 film; the part being omitted is HOW he dies. The original Godzilla can only be taken down by a weapon so powerful that its own inventor regrets making it, whereas the 1998 creature...just gets hits by missiles. There is, of course, a lot of thematic and symbolic stuff separating the two as well, but the point is that how each monster dies is the key factor.
9:30 - Abandoning the tradition is actually part of why a lot of people (myself included) don't like Shin Godzilla. There are other reasons, but I've got videos explaining that. Suffice it to say, that's not very convincing to me.
For everything else...the whole thing with Spiral Studios only serves to prove that Godzilla 1998 and Zilla are truly interchangeable. After all, if Zilla and Godzilla '98 are truly different creatures, then the Spiral statue should have been issued with the "Godzilla" name, right? Considering Toho draws a clear line between Rodan and Fire Rodan (even though the latter starts out as a normal Rodan), then surely they would also draw the line between Zilla and Godzilla 1998, right? Instead, the names appear to be used interchangeably whenever merchandise is made, and Toho makes no distinction.
Therein lies the issue here. Godzilla 1998 IS Zilla; the latter would literally never have existed without the former. Everyone involved in the making of FINAL WARS, as well as Patrick Tatopolous himself, acknowledge that Zilla is the 1998 Godzilla. Toho makes no distinction between them. Even if the creature in question started out as Godzilla, now it is a different creature, as proclaimed by the people who hold the license.
The way I see it, there's nothing wrong with accepting that. Heck, when you get right down to it, Zilla is the only way that the 1998 Godzilla will continue to exist, especially since that other American Godzilla came along.
Anyway, you can agree or disagree, but I stand where I stand.

mo mo mo... I'd say 98 Zilla is just a mutated iguana. Now, it's offspring is a Zilla. It has atomic breath, very resilient from attacks, fights other kaijus and aliens. Now, we don't know if 98 zilla could've matured into a proper godzilla like its offspring did. Assuming that the show's kaiju was from the same generation as the movie zilla vs the next generation like the one in the show then that radiated iguana would be a bonified godzilla. I think the kaijus from the show were 1st gen so 98 godzilla would've actually been godzilla had it matured instead.
I mean if we took the Legendary concept for Kong, the one that they saw from Skull Island was at the level of the original story Kong vs the TOHO Kong. Then it matured and became a TOHO Kong (kind of.. IDK what Legendary's plans are with him so we won't know till we see him become KING Kong rather than just Kong). I mean, I think he's at kaiju level already. He is as tall as godzilla and kept up with him. Whether or not he'd gain his powers like in the TOHO movies remains to be seen.

Kinda odd that the figure is called Zilla despite it using the Godzilla 1998 figure. My theory is that Toho wants to label all versions including the 1998 Godzilla as Zilla for future Zilla content. That way when people want Zilla related stuff they can find Godzilla 1998 stuff. I know that one of IDW’s Godzilla comic runs had Godzilla fight Zilla. I’m that comic issue they used a design very close to the 1998 design. I think Toho plans on using Godzilla 1998’s design for Zilla. They won’t change the name of the film Godzilla(1998) since that was the name of the actual film. I’m sure some complicated copy right reasons to why the movie’s title wouldn’t be able to change. Even if they did it would be odd since the characters of the film call him Godzilla.
I’m not a fan of Godzilla 1998, but I still refer to the monster as Godzilla and the Final Wars creature Zilla.

    • @ThePatchedVest
      @ThePatchedVest 8 месяцев назад +3

People are overthinking it, when Tristar didn’t make another Godzilla film, the rights to the 98 film, including the creature in it, reverted to Toho - Toho is extremely protective over their monster rights, going as far as to trademark each individual creature, and they trademarked the ‘98 Godzilla design as “Zilla”.
So, when licensed toys and merchandise are made, they either a) have the license to the ‘98 film overall and thus are marketed as “Godzilla” - or b) licensed the individual creature with none of the film rights - and are thus marketed as simply “Zilla”. It’s just legal/sales/commercial talk and has nothing to do with Toho condemning or praising the creature one way or the other.
Personally, I’m guilty of casually referring to them both as “Zilla”, I know it’s considered derogatory because of that stupid “took the god out” quote - but I do it because 1) “Zilla” as a name just sounds cooler to me than “Godzilla” and 2) it’s much less confusing in casual conversation with non-Kaiju fans or newbies, especially since “American Godzilla” is now far more closely associated with Legendary’s Monsterverse creature (which I am, controversially not a fan of). But - otherwise - yes, I agree with most of the people here that the creature in the 1998 film is by all means, canonically (if not legally) Godzilla - and the Final Wars creature is Zilla.
I especially like to distinguish the two creatures because of the slight but very prominent design differences which I’m surprised aren’t touched upon more in this video. Zilla in Final Wars was modeled by scanning a Godzilla ‘98 toy (one featured in the background of this video) which contains several differences in it’s design from the in-film creature designed by Patrick Tatopolous - as such those differences carried over into Zilla’s only appearance in Final Wars. Spiral Studios statue is one of the most accurate Godzilla ‘98 figures I’ve ever seen and I love that as time passes more people have grown to love the creature, it’s design, roar, and screen presence.

I think that most of ppl got confused over the years with the name for this facts:
-G98 was never used again after the series and then Zilla after FW was used for some things so they think that if they look the same they are the same.
-People that hate this Godzilla version also for sure spread to the general consensus that they are the same or that Toho renamed it, so the people that do not fully care or do not really investigate the situation just assume that info as the truth (which for sure this is what happened for new fans all over the internet since many years ago I see only like 3 per 100 young fans that call it Godzilla and all the others call it Zilla for everything and they think that it is the correct name for him and you are wrong always.
I hope that the truth about this get to everyone really! but the people that hate this Godzilla (including Toho) and the people that have a closing mind get the situation worse trying to remove the truth and replacing it like Toho tried now with the Spiral Studio situation doing with them a trademark contrat with Zilla on purpose so they can remove Godzilla 1998 from the general consensus and replacing it with Zilla forever.
PD: Also I forgot to mention the people that hate the movie itself not only the Godzilla they also do much noise about all of this.
I recently saw a video where it sees the movie on a very well way since as a remake It talks about the bad use of nuclear bombs and how nature comes hunting the mankind for hurting the nature doing this and also is a criticism to the USA itself doing that the army only shoots and destroy everything (kinda like Shin Godzilla does a criticism to the goverment of Japan) and those are very solid topics for the movie and are well handle but people only see the surface of the movie as they do no like this Godzilla that is the most realistic one since, come on!!! what do you expect on real life where the fantasy do not exists? It is a real appreciation of Godzilla!!!
    I really love Godzilla 1998!

    • @Dovah2798
      @Dovah2798 Год назад +4

@@Izywik92 They change it for future and new things after the final wars movie but the 98 goji still there too since the name change do not work in retrospect thats why new g98 merch can be done in the recent years and also for Zilla at the same time, like those 2 statues from both characters that are releasing next year (I think both are next year).
So if you see anything directly related to the g98 movie or the animated series they are Godzilla even nowadays but if you see anything like final wars, IDW comics or the earth novel or anything new with that version there the change is done so that is 100% Zilla now and not G98
and about your example of Goku, he still Goku the worst one of course but technically a Goku (i really hate that shit movie jajaja) so this is the same case G98 is a Godzilla may be not the best for the ppl but it is a Godzilla.

I really loved this movie as a kid, but then I grew up and learned to overlook the nostalgia to see the movie for what it was and saw my prior love for this movie as cringy because it was 'bad'. Now, I've come full circle, and while I think the movie is highly flawed, I can't deny that it holds a place in my heart and the monster design is incredibly iconic/special to me, as radically different as it is from the source material. Anyone else think that 1998 Godzilla is the most realistic Godzilla if Godzilla was in real life? Think about it, Legendary is an ancient protector, Shin is a mutated creature, -1.0 is a mutate dinosaur, but 1998 is a mutated iguana. If Godzilla were to be in real life, and be a result of bombing/mutation, he’d probably be an iguana or some sort of lizard, and would probably look like 1998.

Decided to rewatch it just because I saw it in the DVD pile of stuff I owned, got hooked, went to binge other Godzilla movies and got entirely invested. In addition, Godzilla 1998 retains his own trademark under both Toho, and Sony - with Zilla also retaining a separate trademark under just Toho. Not sure if this has changed in the past 4 years, but that's my understanding from 2020 and before.

Now here's a something that's often overlooked in fandom, Purist and what I mean is for fans that only accept genre when it's made by the company/studio and nowhere else these purist fans for Godzilla are strictly toho fan's who down right refuse to accept this creature as anything other than Zilla cause that what Toho named claiming it's not worthy of God if that's even true either way. We just have to accept the fact that purist fans are out their and are gonna cause arguments about stuff like this wither we like it or not.
