The VR-3 was the epitome of VR headsets in 2020, and it cost $3,195. Three years later, the Aero, which is just flat out *better* as well as easier to use than the VR-3, goes on sale for $890? If the trend continues, the XR-4 is $3,995 right now. In late 2026, the successor to the aero should be better than the XR-4, easier to use than the XR-4, and go on sale for $1,090 down from $1,190! In regards to the VRC changes, I just hope the map creators don't get too greedy, I don't think all of them will but some will likely get carried away I imagine. I'm glad it's here but I'm just cautiously optimistic.
I think it's kinda funny how the VRChat credits now make it even more like the Oasis than it was before. Obviously the Oasis was more of an MMORPG that turned into a MMORPG hybrid with social experiences and productivity in addition to other things, but VRChat is really close to that now and it's sort of insane and cool.
Valve has a history of making software open source after they believe that it's fully developed and finished for their intended purpose or goal, so it may be the same case here
Also, I think they weighed the value of making it open source vs. actually having a closed product that is in the Meta market with so much more reach to mainstream. I can see why they would have chosen the latter. I also, really hope, this is indicator of more VR software from Valve...like H-L 3 ahah.
I'm not that amped about vrc's monetization effort; I feel like a monetary incentive, especially given their in-game currency model, is going to attract people seeking the money. Modern examples don't really leave me with much hope for this model.
Yea I just hope there wont be any pay walls to enter worlds(which is gonna happend 100%) or where you get barebones version of the world where you have to pay to actually play the intended experience of the world
That's a good thing. Want lots of really good content, money needs to be involved, behind all content are human beings with limited time who have lives to live
Also even if we don't get paywall worlds, or paywalled content, thrill said in the video that VRC creators get paid in vrc's proprietary currency. Roblox has the same issue where even if they get 50% of the revenue, it has an insane markup to turn that Monopoly money back into real money
Yep I'm planning to use the quest 3 to finally be able to work on my patent properly. I can't draw for shit which means I can't properly show how it works despite having my proof of concept but with the 3D art apps in the quest 3 I can finally do that. I only wish I'd gotten it months ago but I didn't realize it was an option. The hell I probably could do it with the quest 2 but I was wholy uninterested in virtual reality. I just didn't realize that it was for more than just gaming at the time I didn't think they'd come that far.
I dislike the VRChat monetization. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact it's gonna be easier for creators to get paid, but I hate the implementation. It uses coins, which are designed like coins in pay-to-win mobile games. They're made so it's hard to judge how much something costs. You can also only buy them in packs, meaning you'll likely have some leftover after a purchase, meaning you'll want to buy more so they don't go to waste. Even if you can cash out a single coin, doing so makes you lose half it's value, thanks to the 50% cut. I know VRChat unfortunately can't get around the 50% cut, but they didn't have to make the value weird, they could've made 1 coin $0.01 USD, and they could've made it so you could buy individual coins! It just feels so scummy IMO, and I can this becoming another Roblox situation, since those exact concerns are issues people have with Robux.
For the creator economy, sure the creators may get 50% of the split, but Gumroad only takes 10% of what avatar and world creators make, not to mention Patreon takes 25 cents on direct deposit payout and 1% payout fee for PayPal on top of an at most a 12% cut for membership fees. Sure, it's nice for people to support their favorite creators in game, however, the creators earn more still through outside platforms. Hell, I think some creators even just have a donation thing so they get 100% of donations anyways, so thinking about it from a purely monetary perspective, it makes sense to support creators through the means by which we are already doing so. VRChat wants to capitalize off of how convenient it will be paying for in-game subscriptions.
It's wild how the Vision Pro has suddenly made $4000 sound like an actually reasonable price. The Apple effect is real Edit: to clarify, I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing. It's just wild how much it changes the public's (and my own) perception of the cost.
Actually, Apple is pushing the prices down. The XR-3 costs $7000 plus a subscription, needs stations for tracking and isn't a standalone device. The Vision offers higher resolution and eye-tracking navigation that is yet to be seen in the industry. And now Varjo launches the XR-4 cutting almost half the price with no subscription.
VRC is becoming the metaverse Zucc wanted. Living and working in VR just became a lot more real and honestly, I can't wait to see what the change brings to VRC
I worry it will bring paywalled worlds, and bad conversion rates to creators from VRC's proprietary currency back into real money. I think this was certainly a decision that was made by the upper echelon of VRC, and I fully believe this will be bad for the community.
@VioFax yeah, it's one of the reasons I kinda feel like not learning blender. For all we know next year they'll make a ai that can just make a world at the rate it's going by just typing in what you want.
I'm hoping the vr chat pay thing is more like a donation jar that's optional, and used sparingly maybe for some extra avatars. Idk, this could easily go horrible or well. 😅 I know if I could make money making a world, that would definitely motivate me to learn to make a world finally lol.
I have been RAVING about variable focus for years and it is literally the *only* feature I’ve genuinely really wanted from a new VR headset since the technology was announced by oculus like six years ago! I am so insanely happy that this is coming out and that it’s going to come down in price soon! I’ve been saying that people keep wishlisting things like increased resolution, wider fov, lighter weight, better audio, etc, but almost none of it matters compared to the ability to focus on objects and use your eyes normally! This is the missing link between Virtual Reality and Reality Reality!
@@Nobody-Nowhere I know, but at least it’s a step in the right direction-having that feature available for any part of a headset immediately improves it in my book beyond all headsets that don’t have it at all
From a sentimental standpoint, I'm always happy with HTC hitting the mark. The issues are software side, so doesn't take a lot of optimism to foresee the compatibility issue being solved. I pour all of my reckless optimism in hoping that Sony will collab and work with HTC for support with PSVR2. I can imagine a PS5Pro having native integration for something like that. I'd love to try the XR Elite side by side with a XR4 to understand the difference
Please talk more about lens glare in VR headsets. Which headsets are better for avoiding lens glare and that kind of thing. The lens glare & god rays are the most annoying thing about my Valve Index & number one priority for an upgrade.
Tbh I’m kinda hoping the new creator monetization program for VRC will turn out well for everyone! I’m curious to see how it will be used going forward:O
Everything is perfect about the XR4, spatial audio, etc except for the missing MicroLED displays. Add this plus 8k res per eye so we get infinite contrast, less discernible screen-door effect, and near instantaneous response time then we are genuinely closer to total immersion capability.
I honestly think that the XR4 is the biggest slap in Apple's face. Vario just looked at Apple and said "what do you got on us." I honestly think the selling point for this thing should be that it costs about as much as what Apple wants for their vision pro headset but is like 10 times better
Not to mention Quest 3 is 7x cheaper and has the largest VR gaming ecosystem period and does a lot of similar things with improved MR over Q2, leaving people wondering who Vision Pro is even targeting at this point. Sandwiched in-between.
thats nothing new. apple has always made weaker hardware thats priced higher. they excell at everything else. software and marketting. Thats why the iphone is so successful despite compettitors having better and cheaper hardware. its only till a few years ago that apple actually has decent hardware in their stuff. the thing you forgot though is the apple headset is standalone. its made to be used standalone.
@@TayoEXEyeah gee I wonder if that much cheaper gaming device is meant to compete with an incredibly high end and unique headset, it’s definitely not like they were different markets.
I'm literally holding off on buying my next vr headset, waiting for a wider FOV headset with modern specs. The pimax 12k, set to launch AFTER the crystal seems like a decent contender, but VR headsets keep dropping with index-like FOV. Why can't we have bigger FOV headsets?
I have an 8kx, I debated getting the Beyond, but the FOV wasn't there. I've tried most VR products by way of my flight school, heaps of students have their own sim set ups and being them in from time to time. The 8kx still stands out all these years later. Let's hope the 12k addresses all our needs, idc if it requires a beastly PC to run it, it has to be ABLE to do it.
Some of us are waiting with VERY deep pockets for the perfect VR system to get into. I have dropped $5,000+ for a laptop, so this is not much different. I want something so awesome, I could slip into a VR delusion and escape reality for the remainder of my retirement years.
@@Sarevok_Wins I see a couple bits of hardware I could use, but it is not available yet for the consumer market. Looks like the RTX 5000 series will be out (or at least announced) around the end of the year too.
@@Sight-Beyond-Sight I think I'll be rebuilding my setup once the 50 series drops, but I'm just looking for a nice VR set without the damns screen door effect.
@@Sarevok_Wins That is part of my problem too. My desktop is a 2nd gen i7. The 14900KS looks JUICY and dumping in some 192GB of DDR5 5600 MHz (CPU limit) would fill the need nicely. I want to get it all at once so I have something worthy of pushing the latest and greatest. Also looking at the Virtuix Omni One omni-directional treadmill to go with.
QOTW: to what extend do you believe that the vrchat paid subscriptions can be a good thing? like, what possibilities do you think there are, that could be worth subscribing for, and how possible do you think it would be for providers to work with vrchat things as a side-job, using subscriptions? my own take is that i honestly think that paid services in vrchat CAN be a good thing. now, i personally dont play it, but in general, paid services can be good as long as its only paid-access to things where such access makes sense, and both the price for customer and the providers portion is fair. pretty sure some people will eventually decide to get a little greedy, but its worth a try
I dont get it, isnt the auto focus feature just eye tracking and then setting the focus to what your eyes are looking at in software? Or does it do anything more than that?
I think adding monitization to vrchat will be a bsd thing. The game is already plauged by shady characters and half assed strip clubs. Adding real money directly into the game i believe will worsen these issues and create new ones like, paywalling features that have no reason to be paywalled, pollarize communities by those who donated and those who havent, and scams.
already an issue you know. patreon paywalls. what this will do is just make it more mainstream. low effort cash grabs are going to be more common. lets just hope 1 or 2 good things come out amongst the wave of shit
Steam Link and the Vive Ultimate trackers are the *big* things for me; I have a Quest 2 that I've been using as a PC headset via Virtual Desktop because most of my VR games are on my PC, but I often suffered from *huge* lag spikes; which in a game like say, Blade and Sorcery, allowed an attack I would've otherwise successfully blocked to *hit* me. I honestly think having to connect my Quest 2 to my PC in such a roundabout way might be the main problem there, and if Valves Steam Link *fixes* that problem, I'm honestly *down* for it because that's really the *big* reason my Quest 2 has been sitting collecting dust for so long. As for the Vive Ultimate trackers, I *really* can't wait until those things officially support *all* headsets; I've been wanting full body tracking for *ages* , not just for the boost in immersion, but also to make my VR sessions much more of a *workout* by engaging much *more* of my body. Blade and Sorcery's my *favorite* VR game, and being able to use more of my body to fight will *definitely* make fighting in it more of a workout.
Hey I don't know if there is a certain place to put QOTF but ill put it here. Is it worth it to buy the big screen beyond if I already have an index ( I've had it for abt 1 year now) or should I wait till the index is "dying" to buy the beyond/ newer headset?
You've already got the base stations and controllers, so the Beyond definitely wouldn't hurt. If wireless hadn't come along and I had PCVR equipment and that kind of money, I'd buy a beyond. Comfort and visuals are top notch with nothing else coming close currently.
I have to agree, I can't be mad with VRChat adding a subscription. It's not mandatory, it doesn't remove ads since they don't use any ads. Their only form of income for the game was VRC+, which probably didn't earn them as much as they needed. They have people working on the software of the platform as well, and they get paid. I'm surprised how far they've made it without a mandatory charge. If they were earning hundreds of thoasands in profits and decided to randomly add in a subscription, then that'd be completely different.
I for one am really stoked about the VR Chat monetization because it means it could finally be the thing that drives ARTISTS onto the platform. I mean its not hard to imagine maybe some very famous DJs might see this as motivation to do virtual concerts in VR Chat where you need to pay 5 or 10 bucks to attend. I don't think it's unreasonable at all if it brings out famous artists that normally wouldn't care.
You mentioned the XR4 had increased the horizontal FOV but what of the vertical FOV? I've recently bought the Aero despite knowing it had a lackluster vertical FoV. How does the XR4 compare in that regard?
specs seem amazing, i'd buy it but i'm wondering about the comfort, also which it was oled. also, i think the aditional 6000k isn't worth the focal version, i'd not pay more than double the price just for that feature. but if it turns out to be comfortable for extended use i'll buy one prolly.
Wow, I had no idea about the new steam link! This allows me to much more easily play pcvr with my quest and that means I can play games like rumble which you should cover. The players are getting much better and the high skill ceiling is something worth your time.
The hype is real, and so is the expense! Only private industry and popular RUclipsrs need apply. Huge gap now between low end VR and high end. Hope that changes soon
Waiting for Immersed Visor, which might come next year. As a visually impaired programmer, I'm looking for something that could replace my work monitors with all their issues. However, MR glasses might have their own issues. For example, my eyes find it difficult to adjust to Quest 3 even with prescription lenses, and I also notice some PWM-like flickering which causes a bit of an eyestrain. Not sure if Visor will be able to sort it all out. Also, zoom-in feature in passthrough is on my wishlist, but no idea who and how could implement that.
Companies keep pushing resolution. I would rather higher fov and local dimming. The quest 3 resolution is the sweet spot for still looking good without taxing hardware.

I love that Brad is just the official mascot for Deckard Copium
It seems Valve is going in the right way, shame the app isn't open source but being free is already great
Valve has a history of making software open source after they believe that it's fully developed and finished for their intended purpose or goal, so it may be the same case here
This obsession with open source is meh
Since it's Facebook's drivers they're likely not allowed to publish Facebook IP
Also, I think they weighed the value of making it open source vs. actually having a closed product that is in the Meta market with so much more reach to mainstream. I can see why they would have chosen the latter. I also, really hope, this is indicator of more VR software from Valve...like H-L 3 ahah.
I'm really hoping they make it work with linux, we're so close to me finally being able to uninstall Windows completely
@@cenciende9401I'm sick of the whole "greed is good" mindset that modern companies have!
Also even if we don't get paywall worlds, or paywalled content, thrill said in the video that VRC creators get paid in vrc's proprietary currency. Roblox has the same issue where even if they get 50% of the revenue, it has an insane markup to turn that Monopoly money back into real money
@@katanatherobocrux It's not greed is good, it's people are going to be able to put in more effort to their work if that work also pays the bills

What I think the headset shows is that it's still pretty amazing how solid the quest 3 is for price.
Meta: Quest 3 design
Varjo: " *YOINK* "
Thanks for the consistently awesome uploads, Thrill!
Lets go tuesday newsday on a friday night! coming from floor gang
It's wild how the Vision Pro has suddenly made $4000 sound like an actually reasonable price. The Apple effect is real
Edit: to clarify, I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing. It's just wild how much it changes the public's (and my own) perception of the cost.
The Apple Vision Pro doesn't need a PC
@@phil631still overpriced
@@corruptederror1952it probably isn’t depending on the cost of the tech. This shit ain’t cheap to make
Actually, Apple is pushing the prices down. The XR-3 costs $7000 plus a subscription, needs stations for tracking and isn't a standalone device. The Vision offers higher resolution and eye-tracking navigation that is yet to be seen in the industry. And now Varjo launches the XR-4 cutting almost half the price with no subscription.
@@phil631 that doesn't mean it has great graphics....
You forgot the most important part! THEY ADDED A CLOCK TO VRCHAT
!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT
So true. I was shocked when I logged in.
VRC is becoming the metaverse Zucc wanted. Living and working in VR just became a lot more real and honestly, I can't wait to see what the change brings to VRC
I worry it will bring paywalled worlds, and bad conversion rates to creators from VRC's proprietary currency back into real money. I think this was certainly a decision that was made by the upper echelon of VRC, and I fully believe this will be bad for the community.
im still pessimistic about the microtransactions in vrchat
yay, supporting the creators, but i only see it going bad
@VioFax yeah, it's one of the reasons I kinda feel like not learning blender. For all we know next year they'll make a ai that can just make a world at the rate it's going by just typing in what you want.
The fact you got gobit to join this video is insane
Excellent video, great wrap up of the news!
THANK YOU!!!!!!! :D
Thank you! You woke up my interest in VR back!
Don't think I have seen your vids pop up on my feed with "seconds" shown before. Looking forward to this one and afraid to see the price!
Dude is selling so many kidneys he must be on a watch list
Nice to have you back. Thanks for the updates!
XR-4 has a mini-LED panel and doesn't include a computer. Really puts the value of the AVP into perspective. (OLED panel + M2 and R1 chips.)
I love that you brough back the longer outro music. It's great to bop to it at the end of the video
I'm hoping the vr chat pay thing is more like a donation jar that's optional, and used sparingly maybe for some extra avatars. Idk, this could easily go horrible or well. 😅 I know if I could make money making a world, that would definitely motivate me to learn to make a world finally lol.
I'm not too thrilled to have VRchat worlds locked behind a paywall
@@Just_a_Piano_if they lock out little kids in exchange for money that's a potential gold mine.
this sounds like paid mods again, remember how that went for bethesda
Thrill and PHIA together irl, awesome!
Its the passthrough cameras, not the headset lenses.
@@Nobody-Nowhere I know, but at least it’s a step in the right direction-having that feature available for any part of a headset immediately improves it in my book beyond all headsets that don’t have it at all
Damn we can't even escape cover charges in virtual reality now
WHERE IS THE MEME BREAK?!
Can’t wait to see you hit 1 mil Thrill!!!!
For me, Steamlink's quality couldn't compare to the auto settings I have on Virtual Desktop.
been waiting for this video to come
From a sentimental standpoint, I'm always happy with HTC hitting the mark.

Im a bit angry about the monetization... Already worlds that are now charging for old mod features and access to the worlds... VRChat sucks now...
What kind of PC spec/modem is required for that SteamVR link?

it's great seeing you are still liking the bigscreen beyond. I definitely want to pick one up at some point
Yeah I thought a lot of the same. XR3 was basically the only thing at Vision Pro's level and Varjo just one upped themselves.
Not to mention Quest 3 is 7x cheaper and has the largest VR gaming ecosystem period and does a lot of similar things with improved MR over Q2, leaving people wondering who Vision Pro is even targeting at this point. Sandwiched in-between.
@@TayoEXE eh I still don't want to be in the meta ecosystem. I was thinking about it but I'm going to stick with my Pico 4
thats nothing new. apple has always made weaker hardware thats priced higher. they excell at everything else. software and marketting.
A small increase in FOV leads to huge increase in computing. We need faster chips or better cooling systems. Just my guess
But FOV beyond 140 is useless and taxing on hardware.
Some of us are waiting with VERY deep pockets for the perfect VR system to get into. I have dropped $5,000+ for a laptop, so this is not much different. I want something so awesome, I could slip into a VR delusion and escape reality for the remainder of my retirement years.
Same boat honestly. Quest 2 Fallout 4 has been a stellar experience for now. Have you purchased a VR daily driver yet? Or are you still waiting?

Happy 1st december!🎉🎄

It's not crypto, just regular ol' proprietary

This sucks, but please complain about the actual system
Why the xr4 camera arrange looks so similar to the quest 3?
Stupid question time…
What game is being shown at the end of the video? (And the beginning as well I think).
You mentioned the XR4 had increased the horizontal FOV but what of the vertical FOV? I've recently bought the Aero despite knowing it had a lackluster vertical FoV. How does the XR4 compare in that regard?
Vertical FOV of the XR-4 series is 105 degrees.
Its so good he couldn't wait till Tuesday that it turned from Tuesday newsday into Friday newsday.
After experiencing the quest pro controllers, i definitely dont think standalone trackers are going to replace my laser trackers.

How's the black level on that thing? You only said the Bigscreen Beyond felt better.

mmm the orbo's odyssey on the advert, love thrill's music taste
specs seem amazing, i'd buy it but i'm wondering about the comfort, also which it was oled.
also, i think the aditional 6000k isn't worth the focal version, i'd not pay more than double the price just for that feature.
but if it turns out to be comfortable for extended use i'll buy one prolly.
To me i feel like "Giant Chrome Quest 3" is the most menacing part of its design aesthetic. Looks like the face of an H/K drone from Terminator lol
Actual exciting VR news are back❤
Waiting for Immersed Visor, which might come next year.
It was good to shake your hand! Keep up the great content man
Companies keep pushing resolution. I would rather higher fov and local dimming. The quest 3 resolution is the sweet spot for still looking good without taxing hardware.
