  • This was a tough video to make. Coolman is injured and has good days and bad. We are taking one day at a time . We are not sure of the final outcome .

Extra comment: Applause at working to keep horses even after their technical "usefulness" is over. So kudos to you!!!!! I don't throw mine away either. We are an old folks home here now with myself & both my boys.

I have 2 older Icelandics. One is almost 30 years old. This Spring one had a back leg that couldn't pick up. Had to cancel hoof trimmers. Called vet out. If tried to pick up hind leg then horse would nearly fall over sideways rotating away. Vet said was a locked up stifle & not uncommon in horses with arthritic joints. He had the vet tech lean against horse on other side then vet was able to get leg up & unlock. Patella in knee joint gets locked up (stifle = knee). Told me can use Butazone on his bad days. Can try product from Australia called 4Cyte that has clinical trials showing may help. Also Platinum brand Joint Glucosamine (MSM). There are also injections can try, but are "expensive". He wouldn't say how much, but made a bit of a face. So far we are doing okay with light movement being out in yard (sometimes need grazing muzzle due to insulin resistance issues on grasses) & use Bute sparingly. As you no doubt know, Bute is a blessing & a curse for such things. Took him a month or so, but he is now tolting when excited to get out again. -- So kind of think I had something like this with my 25 year old Icie. Both have arthritis. My 30 year old has bad knees. Harder to do hoof trim etc. -- I should do some videos on this topic too (been long time since did a video) & also about what I'm doing on feed for them. Using lots more wet mash type feeds and smaller meals vs bigger meals. Being thinner is probably in his favor, as less weight on the legs. He has figured out how to stand and move with a bad back knee. Takes time to heal if he pulled something in there. Never heard of that lotion. Mine was not a strain / sprain, but locked up. Thankfully that worked itself out & not had happen again, but both have arthritis & won't be young again.
Seeing horses with problems & helping them age is really hard emotionally. So... feel ya on this!!! -- By the way, I love your braid in your hair. I used to have long thick hair, but I'm old now. ;-) Everything gets old!

Thank you so much! That is so awesome that you’re helping these older guys age with grace. I really hope yours continues to do well . You’re exactly right about being on the leaner side being actually a good thing for weight bearing. I have been thinking about going to small meals through out the day instead of twice a day feeding. That’s a great idea. The blue lotion is amazing. I even use it on my hands and my daughter uses it on her shoulders after a long day of roping. You can buy it on Amazon .
Aww thank you 😊. My hair is so thick that putting it up gives me a headache so I try to braid it on hot days lol! Aging is definitely not for the faint of heart .
I really appreciate your kind words and for being apart of this RUclips journey with me. 😊
