One of the best things about this show is that they don't brush over traumatic experiences with the characters getting over it in a single episode. Buffy is suffering from what we would recognise now as PTSD. She treated her friends badly, particularly Willow here. Definitely could have benefited from some sort of therapy but in the 90s people didn't talk about that much 😂
Cordelia has no tact but she always says the things that the rest of them don't always want to face up to.
Interesting fact that Cibo Matto is a real band and one of the members is John Lennon's son Sean, who appeared briefly in this episode on stage.

If Buffy was a real girl in a real school she would definitely be 'overly', but with the setting the show takes place in we have to turn our suspension of disbelief up to match. That includes a little leeway for how the characters act and react to things.

Buffy is a 16 year old that was chosen to be The Slayer. She has not the maturity or understanding of what t that means in total. She had been slaying and destroying evil with the specter of death around but what does that mean to a young girl. Everyone says “ we all gotta die” but they don’t really believe it deep down. It’s just false bravado. Buffy was dead for a couple of minutes. She felt and experienced death as a Slayer. Not only does she now understands death but she understands that being a Slayer can bring her death at anytime band that all Slayers will die. She knows she became one when the one before her died and there will be another after her. Think of you had the responsibility to fight evil in a life or death struggle always. No break, no rest, just you . Then add that you have to be perfect because if you make one mistake, you die. Buffy’s death made what she was Chosen to do, real. When you say with a chuckle, do it because you might be dead tomorrow, you don’t really think it’s going to happen. Buffy now knows it can and probably will. How many 16 year old suburban girls would not be traumatized by that reality and not just her “short” death. Being depressed often means a lack of feeling or any joy. Lashing out and hurting someone at least makes you hate yourself. Self hatred is at least a feeling and breaks the intense boredom of sadness. In most Buffy episodes there are 3 levels to the writing. The story that entertains and moves the plots . The second level are the Metaphors in the story. The use of Metaphors allows addressing subjects without preaching. ( wish the writers today would learn that ) and finally the third level… universal questions about life, meaning, and truth. Those are asked and addressed over time and that is why BTVS is studied in Philosophy, Ethics, and Psychology classes in colleges.

I think the “sexy dance” as it’s referred to by Willow is that Buffy was two fold. She was trying to make Angel jealous while pushing her friends away. She knew “using” Xander would hurt Willow, and teasing Xander would make him feel like he can look but not touch and make him resent her. And, of course she was trying to hurt Angel every chance she got. This is such a great episode. Darker tone, hilarious lines, cibo matto and addressing the trauma she suffered by dying “for a minute”.

From "Miss me?" to Willow's perfect smile at the end this is a marvelous episode.
Buffy is a 16 year old girl to whom death has been made very real. She knows now what being The Slayer means and what it will cost.
She fights until she gets murdered again.
Then just like the Slayer before her, the next Slayer does it all over again.

It's always awkward to see Buffy like this but she was surrounded all summer by people she couldn't talk to about her probs. And what's she supposed to tell a therapist? I was killed by a vampire and came back alive? Quick trip to a psych hospital. She didn't have a lot of options to get that out until she was back with her friends. We usually associate anger as a substitute for other emotions as a male thing but anyone can have the issue, especially a teenager who has to surpress her feelings the majority of the time.

I can still remember watching the episode and wanting that Xander/Willow kiss and not getting it at that moment no matter how many times I rewatched the episode! I also felt so badly for Willow trying to recreate the scene at the Bronze, but there was no chemistry.
I see others have pointed out that it was a real band at the Bronze. That's going to happen a lot, so get ready for creative editing!
I love the gang's friendship shown at the end. Yes, you are totally right, Buffy should say that she's sorry, but her friends let her know that she is already forgiven. Such are your ride or die friendships in high school if you are really, really lucky.

One of my favorite upgrades in season 2 is the music. They hired the composer Christophe Beck and he composed the music for the show for several seasons. It also really elevated the show because the music is crafted specifically for the moments in these episodes and really helps drive home the emotion of the series.
Also, something I think that a lot of people either don't notice or they gloss over is during the Buffy/Xander dance, Xander is actually picking up on the fact that Buffy is using him. Just watch his facial expressions, they say everything.

Excellent episode in a lot of ways. It's just as much a conclusion to Season One as it is a start for Season two. I've always appreciated that they actually addressed the trauma that Buffy went through in defeating The Master and tried to inject a little "realism" into how she deals with it.

My standard spiel for this episode:
Cibo Matto, the band playing while Buffy abuses Xander, was a real band that released several albums. At the time this episode was shot, their bass player was Sean Lennon, son of famous Beatle John Lennon. For some reason they decided to highlight him with a blue spotlight onstage.
The song they play while the grinding is going on is called "Sugar Water". There's a music video for it here on RUclips, and I recomment watching it. It's ... interesting.

They were Sophmores in season one. Buffy arrived halfway through the school season (thus the real life half season for season one). This episode being after summer break goes back to the school as a Junior.
Buffy's back which means its better Xander didn't kiss Willow. She would've returned whether they kissed or not. If his hormones still prefer Buffy, it's better he and Willow didn't kiss. I'm not convinced Xander cares about Buffy. His crush is based off her being the new girl like the men in _Twilight_ acted towards Bella except Buffy and Xander both have rounded personalities and characteristics that don't make them one-dimensional.
The reason the vampires at the end were too easy for Buffy is because they ween't the point. For her, the problem was The Master and his bones. Giles giving Buffy closure and buring the body before Buffy left for her dad's or just having Buffy destroy them before she left for her dad's would have solved this episode's problem aka Buffy's issues reguarding her acting the way she did.
5:32-5:36 Right! Do you know how many people try to defend him for this and say its about helping with the slaying. No. This is just blatant Edward Cullen creepiness eight years before The first Twilight books was pubished. Even the argument of he's there with news about The Annointed One doesn't work under these circumstances. Saying this on patrol with her would be a healthier to his personality time to do it.
"I won't tell anyone your a moron" isn't actually a good insult. It's like when Cordelia called Willow boring in the second episode of season one. It's still more than likely going to aka might hurt (even if you're the kind of person who can make it appear as it yo're unaffected), but not really a good insult by any standard. "A bitca." As funny as the line is, sometime it makes me feel Buffy insulted the wrong person ("I won't tell anyone your a moron").
Showing the vampires digging with their hands so, in dialogue, it can be revealed the ground is consecrated. Not to mention, The Annointed One learned from The Master, and is treating them the way he was taught by him.
Buffy knows how Xander feels about her that she doesn't feel that way about Xander, how Angel feels about her, and how Willow feels about Xander. She has issues and not dealing with them is causing "the Joan Collins 'tude" towards people she claims she cares about. Cordelia was the one in the right in saying what she said to Buffy about dealing with it or said friends will leave her high and dry. But I also know, for them, this is them figuring out there's something more wrong than just having a little attitude. So, it wouldn't have happened at that exact moment.
"A bitca" and "there gonna cook her dinner." And Buffy's moron joke should have been really geared towards... 😁
So, what did the English call "issues" in 1997? The line definitely sounds like The WB didn't want to get too heavy, but the writers knew they had to acknowledge it.
"Undead American." Yeah the ninties were big on the labelling we roll our eyes at now because everything before the ninties people started saying was offensive and/or wrong, so it became about how to reference people. Sad fact is, in some cases people still struggle with that. I prefer just ignoring the labels and treating everyone as equally human.
Xander: "I don't know what your problem is? What your issues are?" Yeah he does. Giles told him and Willow in the cafeteria. However, I also applaud, "If they hurt Willow I'll kill you." Even if its an empty threat, because the real threat is Cordelia was right and if Willow dies Xander will rightfully blame Buffy and coming from someone who's been crushing on Buffy since early S1, the real threat is that he means all this and isn't swooning. That means something.
The Anointed isn't a child. Not since episode five. He's a vampire. A young vampire The Master trained, but a vampire nonetheless.
"Buffy should've went to therapy." And tell the therapist what?
The conversation from 20:13-21:53 Buffy just treated others so dirty, that even if you disliked some of the characters she wronged, you were still on their side over Buffy's.
There was no formal apology, but when it came to the group, they knew what she was going through, saw her take her issues out on The Masters bones, and Xander and Willow specifically saw her body language as she tried to find the words to do apologize, so they decided she didn't need to. The whole moment was an apology and forgiveness scene. Sometimes the formal apology isn't necessary and sometimes it is. And in this case Willow and Xander decided it wasn't as Buffy was attempting a formal apology.

I think the Brits might have called it shell shock or battle fatigue depending on how old they were. Shell shock originated in WW I, battle fatigue (aka combat stress reaction) originated in WW III, and PTSD originated in 1980 with the DSM-III published that year.

@@Buffy8Fan agreed. The terms had just stuck in my head from an unrelated FB thread that was initially about how pets suffer from fireworks and idiots blasting off firecrackers etc especially around the 4th of July, and I had noted that a lot of people also don't enjoy those either due to having PTSD.
Long ago when I was a kid in the 60s, my dad used to take us to see fireworks on the 4th, and I only figured out later that he hadn't really enjoyed them himself, he was very jumpy. He'd served as a Marine in Korea, and the sounds reminded him of artillery and gunfire. But of course it isn't just people who serve in combat who get PTSD, and we've learned a lot more about it since my dad's time.
"Issues" was an interesting way to put it, it covers a whole slew of possibilities and doesn't step on the toes of anyone who really does have trouble dealing with the aftermath of trauma. It's a good word.

Notice Buffy did NOT say “alive and kicking” to Giles. She said,”live and kicking.
    As per ChatGPT:
    1. “Alive and kickin’”: This phrase emphasizes the state of being alive or having life. It suggests that someone or something is not only alive but also vibrant, energetic, and actively engaged in life.
Certainly! The difference between "live and kickin'" and "alive and kickin'" lies primarily in the choice of words and the slight shift in emphasis."Alive and kickin'": This phrase emphasizes the state of being alive or having life. It suggests that someone or something is not only alive but also vibrant, energetic, and actively engaged in life."Live and kickin'": In this variation, the emphasis is more on the action of living rather than simply the state of being alive. It implies an ongoing, dynamic engagement with life, where the focus is not just on existence but on actively participating, thriving, and enjoying life to the fullest. While both phrases convey a sense of vitality and energy, "alive and kickin'" puts more emphasis on the fact of being alive, while "live and kickin'" highlights the ongoing action and engagement with life itself.
In a sarcastic context, “live and kickin’” could imply a sense of irony or disbelief. It might suggest that despite appearances or expectations, someone or something is still managing to go on, albeit with some degree of struggle or difficulty. It could also convey a sense of resignation or cynicism, where the speaker acknowledges the persistence of a situation or individual despite unfavorable circumstances. For example, if someone asked about the status of a failing business, a sarcastic response might be, “Oh, the business is still ‘live and kickin’-barely.” This usage adds a layer of irony or skepticism to the phrase, highlighting the contrast between the outward appearance of vitality and the underlying reality.
    Ok. Back to me.
This show is known for its “Buffy speak”. But how about the way it literally uses language literally?
    I love this show.
