  • So recently there's been a lot of discussion about the future of Doctor Who and whether Disney will cancel the co-production deal that has so far given us Series 14. There's a lot of panic and concern, but I thought today I'd take a deeper look at the situation and explore the what's fact and what's fearmongering.

This all just seems like a way to generate more news for the show. Doctor Who isn't owned by Disney and therefor they have no say if the show gets cancelled or not. Worst case is they pull funding and they remove it from their platform, which would be very unlikely to kill the show. It's one of, if not BBC's most recognizable and well known shows. They wouldn't just cancel it because Disney backs out.

Good grief, finally someone has the sense to contextualise the ratings with regard to overall TV viewership. I brought this up a while back in the comments to one of Dave Cullen's videos on the subject and got slightly flamed. The point is that a show that's beating Eastenders in the charts is not failing. In that comment I suggested looking at the decline of broadcast TV viewing numbers as a more interesting subject than picking out DW and comparing it to numbers from a decade ago. Not that anyone picked that up of course.

Just another note on Bad Wolf, it not only has Disney money going into it, but Sony Pictures actually owns a good stake of the studio, so it's not like if they loose Disney they'd have to go back to a Shoestring budget, and the majority of Disney money is probably more on Distribution and Marketing rather than the actual show itself (which mind you, does allocate more budget for the show by proxy, but still)

I'm not surprised about this, there are some people who are just champing at the bit for any metric that they can used to call something - especially something they object to for whatever reason - a bomb. And using broadcast TV ratings in the age of streaming seems to be a particular favourite for them recently. I saw similar claims that Star Trek Discovery was going to be canceled because of poor ratings... 7 years ago.

    • @Creadeyh

4.06m for 73 yards does include streaming. Since it's BBC numbers, they don't include Disney+ but from what we hear DW is barely making a dent there, so we can assume it's pretty close of the actual value. Sure it might not get cancelled, but doesn't mean it's good numbers.
Harbo is also taking any metric to make it look good: audience share is barely 1% higher, not significant, and chart position is relative to whatever is airing at the same time, it's not a good metric by itself, a bad show doing better than other bad shows doesn't make it a good show

    • @ajjohnson8235

"And no the show is not going to be cancelled". Trust me, if Disney isn't getting enough viewers on its platform it will be cancelled. Closed loop shows have no hope if they don't get enough viewers because you can't exploit them outside the loop. Paramount Plus desperately tried this by breaking the loop with Star Trek: Discovery by selling second window rights. It was a disaster costing many millions. Disney+ has only ever renewed a non-comedic scripted show once for a third season. I suspect Disney cancelled the commission already. It's all down to whether BBC Studios can sell what Bad Wolf produces to other companies. Make no mistake, BBC One doesn't want to pay for it and at the moment it isn't because it's getting it for free.

So, the Tardis is in the Volume, a Disney asset. Sure, it can get cosy again but that's one thing you would lose with Disney.
Half the number of people watching a show us still half the number of people discussing and (possibly) enjoying it. The share of audience really only matters to shareholders and, as you say, it's a cheap product as far as they are concerned.
The big problem is Doctor Who is just dumb now. There doesn’t seem to be any cleverness in the writing. Chibnall really lowered the standard and great performances can only carry you so far. We need sci-fi, something to make the audience ponder, as well as wonder.

It's like how a movie's box office doesn't mean anything. If 8 million people went to see the movie on the opening weekend, that just means that they marketed it well. It doesn't mean the movie's good. Maybe 8 million people went to see it and hated it.

Audience share is very similar, so ratings is the only objective metric we can go by. The fact we have easier access to shows than ever and it's still not getting decent ratings means a lot.
73 Yards isn't a strong episode, it tries to set up a mystery but does the most obvious thing with the politician and can't wrap it up in a satisfying way. It's miles away from any of the other episodes you mentioned

We need a new wilderness years - fans of the show bringing fresh blood and a jolt of creativity to the expanded media, free from the concerns of TV ratings. Doctor Who made purely for the love of making it.

You are still trying to polish this turd, but it was awful. I genuinely thought that RTD's return would mark the beginning of a new and exciting era and put the Jodie era firmly to bed, but I was wrong.
Much of it was infantile, the villains were rubbish (the original Sutekh was far more scary than this CGI version) and Davies was just throwing in woke characters for the sake of it, for no other reason that he wanted to foist his own agenda upon us.
Let's put it this way, what would you rather watch, a repeat of Blink, Heaven Sent or The Zygone Invasion/Inversion or a repeat of Series 14?
Davies either needs to get off his high horse and write some decent stories or hand the reins over to someone who can.
I've been with show since I was 6 in 1970 and although there were awful special effects the plotlines more than made up for it.

Its cost Disney a 100 million for two season and the viewership was underwhelming sadly and though cheaper then other shows it still a lot of money. Is this the end...not likely as it;s survived worse and it's a huge brand that will survive no matter the ratings and the name alone guarantees money from merchandise and other outlets. Also Disney seems to want to make bad star wars shows now like the latest one which is painful.

Now why they make this leap is mind boggling since the BBC owns doctor who not Disney.

This was not a surprise the rating are abysmal and Ncuti in high demand leaving his aviability highly unlikely given he already in contract to do a movie.
No renewal means the actors are not in contract.

There is always a possibility Ncuti aviability could change and the second season could be get amazing ratings but how likely is that?
