@@jakethompsonhair ♥ God bless you and thank you. Tried it, it does have a softer look which I like. Better than blunt force snips with the scissors. First time though so it will take some work.
Can you pls direct me to the links? I looked but can’t find them (not terribly youtube savy🙄) but I LOVE this cut. Wld be interested to see the longer mermaid cut too!
My friend and I watched about 50 videos on how to cut a shag haircut before selecting your video to use as a guide. Her hair is extremely thin and I had never cut anyones's hair prior to this so I needed a video that would give me the greatest chance to succeed. I would watch a step then pause the video and i did that step to her hair until there was nothing left to do but remove the rubber bands and see how much damage control we were going to need. The bands were removed. I ran my fingers through her hair shaking it a bit and we both responded to the outcome by saying "oh my God it worked! I did it! Your hair looks better than I've seen it in years. What a great cut!" And what an awesome video he made for us to follow. We cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us. She feels beautiful and I'm proud to say with your help "I did that". Thanks again for sharing. Teresa and Shanda Staunton. Va.
I've never watched any of these videos before. I really like this one. I've always put all my hair up at once and did it that way. Now I want to try it in these sections. My hair is also a bit thin. 80% of it actually fell out a few years ago, I guess stress. Now that it has grown back after that nightmare, it seems healthier. I am 49, thought that it would be thinning more by now but hasn't, yet.
Thank you for this clip. Responding to the “Why would anyone want to cut there own hair?” Question- sometimes it’s about money and sometimes it’s bc the stylist never does what the client asks. I’ve always liked edgy cuts, apparently many stylists don’t. Lol. I’ve either had a friend do it or myself.
I absolutely agree with you! I have been trying to find hairstylists in my area that don’t charge an arm and a leg to do shaggy cuts. I even show pictures. I get boring layers! I find that most hairstylists nowadays choose to do color rather than cut for many reasons and some do amazing color. But it’s very hard to find good cutters, especially ones that are not stuck in their own routine and are willing to expand their knowledge and, learn and do new things! Hence DIY’s!
Facts, and sometimes they straight up destroy your hair. I started cutting my own hair years ago because of bad stylist experiences, but decided to give them another chance last winter when I wanted a color change & cut that I wasn't brave enough to do on my own. I booked with the highest rated salon in my city, thinking they HAVE to be good, right? Yeah, I walked out of there in tears with a patchy, fried, Kate Gosselin cut and spent the next 6 months in wigs. 8 months later now and it's barely any longer since I'm still cutting off so many fried ends. It'll be at least another year before it grows out enough to look normal again. Obviously there are excellent stylists out there like the one in this video, but I'm never setting foot in a salon ever again.
Tell me about it. They always tell me they can do it but they always seem to do what they want. Ok so I’m no spring chicken but I know a pixie cut looks terrible on my squarish face. I know that layers look better. And it’s getting super pricey.
I've always not only described it but brought many photos and nobody could ever do what I wanted.. Plus I don't like sitting in a chair for hours talking about myself to a stranger.
Thank you so much for this DIY video! I'm 64, divorced and have been through cancer therapies and covid in the last 4 years, so I can't afford to go to a stylist. I've already cut my hair just like you instructed in this video. It came out great! My white hair now has some curl in it so it looks even more fantastic! I haven't felt this good about the way I look in a while, so thank you from the bottom of my heart! 🥰
I was literally crying when I came across your video. Thank you SO MUCH! I take care of my father who is 96 years old - it's a 24/7 effort and I really don't have the time to spend as I would like in a salon. I really appreciate your tutorial & so excited to try it when my father is napping😂
Hi! @tigrepaws, I am taking care of my 88yr old mom while my dad has multiple knee surgeries. I did this cut this morning, know I am trying to figure out my shower plan for the day 😂. My mom is healthy but has memory loss. Not too bad! I hope your doing well on your end! Don't forget we can do this haircut in the method that we used in the 70's! Gather one ponytail at the top center of your head or literally on your forehead for an awesome layered haircut! Shout out !
I am going to save this!!! I am 68. You made me look 48, with hair like I had when I was 18! The last hairdresser I saw, I asked him to watch a video on how to cut a shag (not this one). About :15 he says, oh yeah I know that. Then he proceeded to give me a PAGEBOY. That’s the only haircut these people know! But I did this myself a few months ago and my freaking hair looks incredible! THANK YOU …if it works a 2nd time and isn’t a fluke…I’m donating.
Just did this haircut on myself this morning. I only had one pair of hair scissors so I used those. It looks so nice! I cut about 18 inches off so this feels great! Thank you for the great tutorial! I don't think most of the people who see me will know I cut it myself, which is just what I was going for.
I’m so glad I found this video! I did this cut on myself last week and absolutely love the results! Way better than the wolf cut going around tik tok where they direct the entire head of hair to the top. Love my results and recommend to anyone who is thinking of trying!
I agree this guy has very good tutorials. I've been looking a while and cut my hair today because I got confidence from watching this video. it came out great.. but looks more like the wolf cut vid he made. (I didnt see till later! still good tho.) he deserves more views.
You can't imagine how many times I have gone to different salons trying to explain this...and they NEVER got it! Thanks a million!!! I will definitely do it myself!!!
I have been searching for layered, chunky, textured, shaggy-cut techniques for months and months. Finally!!!! I followed this tute last night and smashed it!!! I have spent thousands of dollars on haircuts to only walk out of salons having a "meh it'll do" feeling after, for years. I wish I found this tute before my wedding!!. The only change for me was curtain layers as opposed to a shorter fringe as I am not a fringe fan. Thank you!!
Oh my gosh, I just followed this and it worked! Amazingly, that is after 2 butched and failed shag haircuts and thinking my hair probably was ruined. But my bangs needed to be trimmed, so I thought "well, at least all the other layers have grown a bit, maybe I should give this a try", and it'S ACTUALLY THE CUT I WANTED! THANK YOU!!!
I am going to save this video! I am 68 and you made me look 48 only with hair like I had when I was 18! The last hairdresser I saw, I even asked him to watch a video on how to cut a shag (a different video). At about :15 he says, “oh yeah, I can do that”. Then he proceeded to give me a PAGEBOY. That's the only haircut these people know! But I did this cut to myself a few months ago and my freaking hair STILL looks incredible! IF it works a 2nd time then it won’t be a fluke and I’m donating 💰! I’ll keep you posted! THANK YOU
I have naturally curly hair and have tried hair salons over the years to get the shaggy style I like for my hair. The cut never turns out like I like it so I just do it myself. If it turns out wrong and I get mad then I only have myself to blame and didn't have to pay for it. Haha. I've recently let my hair grow a lot longer and the layers are weighed down. I watched a lot of tutorials that although the end result was gorgeous they are professionals and know about angles, methods, etc. These instructions are simple and easy to follow and I feel confident that I can follow them to recut the layers in my hair without losing too much of the length. Thanks for sharing! :)
Can't wait to try this. My daughter insisted on spending $200 plus a tip, that's TWO HUNDRED dollars, to get a "custom textured shag" which in her words, made her look like a round headed soccer mom (she's in her mid twenties). She's trying to tell me I need to cough it up to get a "good haircut" but I am thinking, no way am I spending that kind of money on a dice toss. Even if I had it to spend. Thanks so much for sharing this!
I have curly hair and finding someone in my area to cut it the way I like is a challenge. It generally ends up looking like a triangle or too heavy on the bottom. Thanks for this. I tried it this morning and it turned out great!
#JuliaMinds ... Thank you so much for sharing! I was wondering if this would work just as well with natural curly hair. I appreciate your comment. Is there anything I should know that may help as I begin to perform this cut on myself? 🙏💜
I'm 55yrs now and only been to the hairdresser 3 times as it was a terrible cut...I know how I want it. I'm going to this scrag cut as it's beautiful. From Wales In Britain.👋
IM A RETIRED HAIR STYLIST OF OVER 35 YEARS AND I LOVE TO KEEP UP ON MY EDUCATION !! I FIND THIS HELPFUL FOR COSMOS TO KEEP UP WITH EDUCATION, ITS SO IMPORTANT !!
Like many others in these comments, I’ve come to this video after watching about a dozen prior. I was a little skeptical, but I am now finished on myself, and I am honestly obsessed with it! It really helps your waves/curls come to life. Thank you so much for this quick, easy, informative video!! I appreciate this so much ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for generously sharing your knowledge with us. I’m in the “don’t have money for a professional haircut” crew so the fact you’d show us how to do it ourselves is very appreciated.
I just found this video yesterday among many many others out there. This one seemed very simple and realistically possible to DIY. (I've watched others that obviously need someone to help you.) Anyway, I did it and it was fast and looks fantastic! I'm 65 and let my hair grow long and was tired of just tying it back or putting it on top of my head. I thought it would be fun to see how long it would grow. Wrong! I needed a change and this cut was IT! I feel 10 years younger and it is so easy to take care of. Thank you!!!!!
I'm a 63-year-old grandma with long dark thick hair and bangs I usually just throw it up on a bun or a high pony some little pieces out. I'd like to kind of do this layered a bit shorter look and was wondering if after this style cut can you still put it in a pony or a bun or is it just layered or short.
I appreciate professionals like you who realize that sometimes going to a stylist is an issue and does something to help. I rarely leave home but It doesn't mean that I don't want pretty hair. I will be trying this. Thank you! ❤️ 🙏
THANK YOU! I can't afford a salon visit right now and desperately wanted this cut. I watched several tutorials but was still too scared to try it on myself. This video gave me the courage to give it a go. It was super easy and I LOVE my hair. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I did the cut this morning and can‘t stop staring at reflecting surfaces 🤩 I am in L O V E with my hair!!! Thank you so much.
This is my favorite step-by-step hair-cutting video, and I've watched many of them! I've been cutting my own hair for the past year now! Thank you, Jake!
I have long, thick quantity but fine texture hair, and have done other videos to do some long layers with ponytail method. Was super nervous to try this but I was AMAZED by how great it turned out, and feel like I got rid of a couple pounds of weight! It lays beautifully, and it let some of my natural body do its thing, would highly recommend. Took me about 20 minutes total, and spent the most time doing the sections to get them right. Good luck, home DIYers!
I've been wanting this look for YEARS and no stylist has been able to look at the many pictures I show them and replicate it. So after much RUclips surfing I landed on this video and turned to my husband and said, "I want you to cut my hair." Now I have a LOT of hair so manoeuvring it wet into the required ponytails took a lot of work. And he made sure that the parts were extremely precise. Before each big snip he'd ask me, "Are you SURE?" Of course I said yes because I trust him and I trusted what I was seeing on this video. It turned out AMAZING, so much so that I posted a before and after on my Facebook profile. My friends were amazed and jokingly asked if he's taking clients! (He's an electrician! 🤣) Of course I will still go to a salon for color, but I will save us the almost $150 it's been costing me to manage my mane and let my sweety play with my haircuts from now on. THANK YOU for this video!! 🙏
I did this cut on myself today, and I love it! I have 2A-2B wavy hair. The last time I asked for layers, the hairdresser did a slither cut all over it, and I hated it. This cut appealed to me because it doesn’t slice through the curls. I’m really looking forward to playing with different styles.
I have that texture too and I'm thinking about cutting it like this but I have really thick, coarse, frizzy hair, do you happen to have that type of hair too? I'm worried it would be too voluminous and crazy
Bingo! Omg, I Love it! ✂️ I cut my hair last night from one of your shag videos, but it wasn't a DYI, this morning I re-cut it with this video, it's way shorter but sassy and adorable! Thank you so much Jake, ❤ I just couldn't afford a salon, not in this economy. 😱
I’m a H/MUA and have never found a hairdresser that cuts or styles the way I want. Very disappointing. THIS is a perfect DIY for me and I already have the tools! THANK YOU! ✌🏼♥️😊
I did this on myself just today and it came out insanely, amazingly perfect! I got the same chunky and straight scissors you linked that made my job so much easier. I went a little further and pulled the sides over towards my face and gave myself more texture and more layers around the face (like your other layering videos showed)! This was the first time ever cutting my own hair and man I nailed it with your tutorial! Thank you!
So I NEVER!! EVER !! comment on anyone's video. Specially on diy. But I tried this method and I'm absolutely on love with my hair!!!! Thank you sooooo much for your precise easy steps. I am forever grateful to you. No one has ever been able to do my hair just like I want it. And for you to be able to explain it and just make it so easy to do. I'm totally amazed. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
This is an unbelievably great haircut! I am not a big salon person to the extent that I usually feel uncomfortable there, and I just love to diy anything I can, so this was fabulous to see. My hair is pretty fine and thinning some so mine came out kind of Runaways/Joan Jett and I’m overjoyed! It’s the haircut I’ve been wishing for for years but thought it was too complicated… thanks to you it wasn’t. Very much appreciated!
I just had a baby and can’t afford going to a salon right now, typically I would be happy to pay a professional. Just did this cut on myself and I was super nervous because I have really long hair, but it came out perfect! Thank you so much !
Jake. I did it. I did your DIY shag makeover and used the feather razor you suggested and the Oribe spray wax which I love. I'm ordering the chunking scissors for when I go back to trim at some point. Your instructions were super easy to follow and the cut came out killer! I've been to a stylist twice trying to get this cut and you gave me the courage to go for it myself. I wanted to thank you for sharing.
Ohmygoodness! THANK you for the easiest and BEST tutorial!! I paid 120.00 for a razor shag two years ago in Portland, OR. She thinned out my hair so much. While it was cute, I didn’t like so many short layers on top. After two years of growing it out, my hair reached past my shoulders and was all one length. But…calling me back for another shag. I combed RUclips for ideas, when I came across your video. By following your instruction, I was able to adjust the top layer to just the right spot. My hair turned out darling (it’s naturally curly). While I did take a wee chunk of finger using the chunky shears you recommended (perfect btw) I will now be more careful. Anyway, a shout out to YOU! I shared this with my sister, so she could do the same cut. Thanks so much, Jake. ❤️
I once showed a stylist a reference photo so I could be assured we were on the same page. They nodded. I asked if they wanted me to leave the photo out on the tray. No, they were confidant they knew what I wanted. Cut ended up looking nothing like the reference photo. This scenario has replayed so many times in my life, I no longer go to salons for cuts. Now I can mess up my own cut for $0!😂 JK. I’m sure it will look great.
This is AMAZING! I just did it! With crappy scissors! I have been trying to get this for years! I even show pictures of myself with my hair the way I want it from when I had the best stylist ever. But she moved away. Thank you so much!
Thank you from an anxiety sufferer,,I think I could actually do this. Going to a salon is very difficult. Some of us have mental health issues and find it hard to go to a salon
My 12yo son and I were home quarantined with SARS-CoV2 for >2 weeks: unexpected side effect - GREAT HAIR. We just followed your video, step by step, with my head as the mannequin head, and THIS CUT WORKS!!! Perfect - no. Fantastic - YES. When is it time to try it at home: when my son is exploring who they are and what is possible. A simple video but so empowering for the brightest star in my sky. Thank you for inspiring the next generation of hairdressers and artists!
Used this technique today to give myself a shag haircut minus the fringe bangs. Instead I did side bangs, because I have a side part. It turned out great! Thanks! ❤️
looking for someone that could do a great shag only to be disappointed. This DIY turned out exactly like the cut I wanted. What talent. Loved the lesson and how you talked it through, awesome!
I have always cut my own hair in layers. One day I went to a really good stylist. She said "who cut your hair, this is the most perfect haircut I have ever seen".
After a couple years of growing my hair out from the wolf cut I was really looking for something that would give me more of what I was desiring. I love this because while its very simple it will give me my desired look. I've always loved a bit more of a kinda messy style. Thank you so much for understanding not everyone can afford a stylist and making hair styling accessible for us.
@@jakethompsonhair Hiya, I'm DEFINITELY determined to give this a go ! , I love the shag look and I DEFINITELY need volume, this is 5he cut I've been searching for for years....but NEVER got. I'm absolutely terrified but I'll watch your tutorials (repeatedly) and go for the chop, please wish me luck 🙏 🤞
I was scheduled for a haircut just like this but got Covid and had to cancel appointment. I was so devastated because I knew what I wanted and was excited for the change. Luckily, I came across this video during my quarantine, ordered the scissors, and took the plunge! I am so happy I did!! I have gotten nothing but compliments and when I tell them I did with a DIY RUclips video they are even more impressed. Thank you so much for this video!!!
I've been looking everywhere for a cut I love..nobody around here knows how to do a real shag..we use to call it The Lioness shag..thank you so much..ill be watching your cuts!
I JUST did this tutorial to my hair but cut it a bit longer about 2/3 inches longer and it turned out GORGEOUS! I was so nervous. I trust the process and couldn’t be happier! My husband was like, WOW. It was so fast too! Thank you so much! Favorite haircut ever.
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I just cut my hair and it looks awesome. It’s really very kind of you to share your knowledge, like you said, we can’t all afford to get pampered and go to professionals, but everybody likes to look and feel beautiful.
Jake thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your knowledge and wisdom of 25+ years of work experience. With those of us who as you said don' have the means to afford a haircut like this or don't want to include it in the budget. Your video it's truly fantastic. Your demonstration is so easy to follow. Your recommendation for cheaper tools to use and still look presentable it was music to my ears. I'll most definitely do this DIY before the holidays and have a very nice current look.
I actually just like cutting my own hair. Im 45 and haven't dyed or been to a salon in about 6 yrs. Ive always cut my son and husband's hair. I have thick hair and layers help to lighten the weight of my hair and keep the length. I made my cuts on the longer side and ended up with a layered look with fringie bangs. From the back, you just see light layers and it give great movement. From the side and front more drama. I love it and will save this video and subscribe. Thanks for sharing your talent with us DIYers!
Thanks for an easy to follow tutorial, the cut looks great. And for the laugh at 8:24 "this shape is so hot right now" :) - had to look at the date stamp after that one - I'm coming up on 65 soon & this was a popular look back in the 80's. Everything old is new again lol. I've been doing what they (now) call the wolf cut for close to 20 years taking it as short as 5" a few times, but it's not as layered as I'd like. Definitely going to give this one a try.
SierranBC,Do you have thick hair? I have thin, fine hair. please let us know how it turned out. My hairstylist made me mad because she asked THREE times if I wanted my hair washed, AFTER me telling her NO. She was impatient with me. And no matter what I tell her, gives me the same cut.
@@sharonlatour6230 Mine's not very thick either, except for just after it's been colored which boosts it up a bit. I ended up using this method (sorry Jake), liked how it looked a little more. ruclips.net/video/eWsjeoqYy4M/видео.html Only cut 4" off the 1st time, testing the waters, it looked great. Decided to take more off but messed up & brought the hair forward to cut instead of out to the side as directed (sore shoulder), and it was a disaster lol, ended up taking more off than planned to fix it - Follow the instructions people! - Anyways, the 1st cutting made my hair look thicker with the layers. And seriously, sounds like you Really! need to find a new stylist. It's her job to give to the cut You want, not what she feels like doing! Or give it a shot to DIY, just take a bit off at a time till you find a length you're happy with :)
@@SIERRAnBC Thank you for answering me. I shall look at what you did, I've done things like the pony tail unicorn cut, trimmed my bangs( may go back to wearing them), cutting off the bottom, . I may get brave again!!
@@sharonlatour6230 Go for it, and then go show it to that stylist lol (took less than 10 mins, most of which was spent trying to get the parts straight & even)
Saw the video, couldn't wait to try it, so I did!!! It really worked and it also corrected some huge errors that I have done in the past with the scissors. Thank you so much Jake, for taking the time to make the video and for sharing your knowledge and brilliant teaching with us! *****
I've watched many videos and decided to go with this one because the result was my favorite! I was trained as a hairstylist and used to give myself short razor cuts all the time but never dared to cut my hair when it was long since it took me 3 years to grow it out. I finally took the chance today after going back and forth for about a month. I was literally shaking after point cutting the first ponytail! The result though was amazing! I'm so happy I did it! It looks better than it did when I went to the salon a year ago to get long layers in my hair! It has so much movement and I still managed to maintain the length that I wanted. So happy I did this! Thank you!
I absolutely love this video!!!❤ I bin doing this for years...but trying to find a Hairdresser that knows how to do it....uggghhh!!! I have left salons not happy.....your amazing!!! Absofukinloutly....thank you :)
I remember this cut in Elementary School. 70s child here. You cut this style absolutely PERFECT! Thank you. Id love a haircut from you. Id never have a bad hair day again :)
First of all - THANK YOU for posting this. It WORKS! Why do it yourself? How about the stylist who cut a big chunk out of my hair and, when I screamed, said "Oh, you didn't want it all cut off?" Or the colorist who turned my hair Easter-egg pink - the week before my brother's wedding? Or the countless times I had to point out that sides weren't even? Or they stylist who called someone else over and pointed at me and said in a loud voice "She actually likes her hair like this - can you believe it?" Or the stylist who, when I explained what I wanted, said "I don't think I would like your hair like that, so we are going to do this instead." Or the constant up-selling and pressure to do more and more stuff to your hair? I am hoping that stylists will read this and maybe learn to be nicer to clients. Because we can only vote with our dollars and I'm voting to save money and stay home.
How did you decide on the second cuts- how long to make them? Are they supposed to align to a guide, like the fringe length? It looked like the back part was cut using the second part(s) as a length guide, but you kind of went too fast for me to see for sure. I'm just looking for some guidance on the cutting lengths, once the fringe length has been established. Can you help? Thank you!
fringe length, pull the sides up up match the length of the fringe. leave it in the rubber bands, then the back, do the same, using the length from the sides, leave in the rubber bands, as you do this.
This is the best video I’ve ever seen on RUclips I can’t believe how I amazing my hair looks so happy with this tutorial hundred percent will share everywhere
@jake Thompson Can you demonstrate a DIY shag hair cut with a side part? So many shags are in the centre. I like my part off centre so I don't draw as much attention to my nose! Please help us side part girls! Thanks! PS I have wavy hair so I'm guessing I just leave my length a little longer? That is the tricky part as if I cut too short it will shrink up!
This is the one!! I tried another shag tutorial on RUclips and it looked lackluster so I came to this video and tried it and wow I am so happy with how it turned out!! I like it more than most pro haircuts I’ve had for real!!Thank you so much for this!!
Also if anyone is wondering if they can do this without the fancy feather scissors the answer is yes, I didn’t have them so I used a little electric shaver I had. Next time I’m gonna get those scissors for sure.
Thanks for the awesome and simple tutorial. I have not found ANY stylist that can cut a shag the way we wore it back in the day and I have been chasing this cut for years. That is The only reason I try to do my own hair.. even though I have messed up up quite a bit, I can only blame myself. But looking at what my stylist did to my hair on Friday.... ugh... now I have to wait for it to grow out before cutting it again. I will try your way in a few weeks... if nothing else, it will be shorter
Ugh. I have an upcoming appointment at an expensive salon in another city, to get a modified shag on my Viking hair. Trying to stay positive but.... I'm just so sick of 40 years of hacking at it myself!
Cool. I got a professional shag cut a few months ago. The salon owner did a great job but I can't find anyone who can repeat the look here in the West of Ireland. I guess I will give this a go. Thanks so much! Shag works here because it rains so much and my thick hair responds well to this style in this damp climate.
Thanks for this. I sent a video of you doing the modern shag to my hairdresser 💇♀️ and what I got was nothing like a shag. I tried this and even found where she had cut some layers a lot shorter on one side than the other. This technique is genius. I have never attempted to cut my own hair and even used this dry. It turned out great. Not perfect but lt looks better than what I came home with a week ago.
thankyou for sharing, i have been doing my own hair like this for a year now and always comes out fine, i stopped going to the hairdressers and no one seemed to do what i wanted .
i just did this on myself with no experience whats so ever and using your tutourial really helped me and made it come out so amazing and honestly boosted my cofidence THANK YOUUU
Love this, Jake! I am a stylist in Connecticut and I’ve just done this cut again on myself a few weeks ago, because I’ve always loved it with my hair type! I’ve been seeing so many videos saying this is the hot new look and that makes me happy! I have a couple of clients who have recently gotten this cut and it’s such a fun look and so many different ways to cut it, tweak it and to style it! Nice job!
Hey Jake, I definitely have to say that this is my favorite tutorial to help me cut my own hair. You already know that I've been doing My own hair for 30 some odd years But with this injury to my shoulder I can't cut it the way I normally do. Thanks again for a fantastic tutorial! 😘
Done this cut at least 6 times now and its still the greatest I've ever had. Hairstylists always messed my hair up, didn't add enough weight to bangs, barely any layers, or just said its impossible to get this look with my cowlick. It's NOT impossible!! Especially if you part the bangs in a zigzag before styling. Thanks sooooo much!!
Love this haircut! I did hairdressing in the past and started cutting my own hair and it's funny, before the pandemic everyone thought I was crazy! Now it's almost become a trend 😂😂
Growing out a pixie and had dreads braided in for the last 9 months. Needed a change and your video was the first one I watched. I did it myself and like you said - it isn’t perfect - but I love that about it and it is definitely still “in” 2 years after this video was posted and so my style. Thanks for your help!!!
This was such an easy to follow video. My hair has been desperate for a trim/cut but I’ve not had the money. I had to improvise with a few things as I only had dog fur cutting scissors (hot water and isopropyl alcohol sterilised), a pointy wooden chopstick and a super wide tooth comb. But managed to make this tutorial work with great success on my super fine, thin curly hair. All the dead split dry ends are gone and I feel so much better and even better it looks great. Thank you again for such a wonderful tutorial.
I’ve asked several stylist to give this cut and none have come even close! My Mom used to be a hairstylist but she is unable to do my hair anymore due to aging & dementia. I’ve done this cut on myself one time before (a couple years ago) and it’s time to try it again! Thank you for tips and info. 😊
I think it depends on where you want your shortest layer to begin, and you should also consider if you have waves or curls, because when dry it will make the layer even shorter.
Thank you so much! I injured my left wrist and do not have good use of that hand right now. I have layered long thick frizzy/curly hair and do not have an extra mirror to see in the back. Your DIY tutorial really helped! My hair is more manageable and even in it's layers again thanks to your hair cutting tricks.
Thanks!
You are so welcome Shawna! Thank you for the Superchat! Much appreciation!
@@jakethompsonhair ♥ God bless you and thank you. Tried it, it does have a softer look which I like. Better than blunt force snips with the scissors. First time though so it will take some work.

Va.
Teresa, is your friends hair straight or curly? I have thin hair and it's straight and a little past my shoulders. I want to do this, but scared to.
I tried it because of your post!! Haha.
I was tired of just not finding exactly what I wanted.
It came out awesome!!
Well done girls, if I had long hair I’d give this ago. Glad it turned out so well. 😉
I hope you're serious. I'm doing it NOW 🙂
Ruther Glen, Va
I've never watched any of these videos before. I really like this one. I've always put all my hair up at once and did it that way. Now I want to try it in these sections. My hair is also a bit thin. 80% of it actually fell out a few years ago, I guess stress. Now that it has grown back after that nightmare, it seems healthier. I am 49, thought that it would be thinning more by now but hasn't, yet.
Yay!!!!! The Shag has FINALLY COME BACK !! 1970S Here we come!! We love and miss you Farrah Fawcett!
Farrah faucet didn't have the shag. She had feathered hair with the round flips in front.
Also I'm not sure I'm even allowed in salons anymore effective 2020..
Thank you so much for this DIY video! I'm 64, divorced and have been through cancer therapies and covid in the last 4 years, so I can't afford to go to a stylist. I've already cut my hair just
like you instructed in this video. It came out great! My white hair now has some curl in it so it looks even more fantastic! I haven't felt this good about the way I look in a while, so thank you from the bottom of my heart! 🥰
@RobinLewis ... Bless your heart. 🙏🌹 I hope and pray all goes well and you are cancer free!
That's SO great! Hope you are still loving your cut and feeling great too!
I dont know who you deserve happy days 🫶🫶
Same except they gave me a Joe Dirt mullet
It's an excellent video. The best I've seen.
Just did this haircut on myself this morning. I only had one pair of hair scissors so I used those. It looks so nice! I cut about 18 inches off so this feels great! Thank you for the great tutorial! I don't think most of the people who see me will know I cut it myself, which is just what I was going for.
That is awesome Elizabeth! Glad I could be of some assistance

I’m so glad I found this video! I did this cut on myself last week and absolutely love the results! Way better than the wolf cut going around tik tok where they direct the entire head of hair to the top. Love my results and recommend to anyone who is thinking of trying!
Same! Well, I haven't cut mine yet but super excited about the look! ❤❤❤
That is cool. The wax spray really makes it great! 👍
This is a nice cut. One of my favorites from my youth in the early 70's.
I agree this guy has very good tutorials. I've been looking a while and cut my hair today because I got confidence from watching this video. it came out great.. but looks more like the wolf cut vid he made. (I didnt see till later! still good tho.) he deserves more views.
Wolf cuts have waaaaay too much volume on the crown for my taste.
You can't imagine how many times I have gone to different salons trying to explain this...and they NEVER got it! Thanks a million!!! I will definitely do it myself!!!
Do you have curly hair? If so did you just cut a straight line or soften it up?
I've had same problem I will be try in the morning. Never a good idea to do late at night.
You and ME both 🙄
@@bkubiak7316haha..smart! I did my last cut at 2am.
always the tiktok e girl cut bro
I have been searching for layered, chunky, textured, shaggy-cut techniques for months and months. Finally!!!! I followed this tute last night and smashed it!!! I have spent thousands of dollars on haircuts to only walk out of salons having a "meh it'll do" feeling after, for years. I wish I found this tute before my wedding!!. The only change for me was curtain layers as opposed to a shorter fringe as I am not a fringe fan.
Thank you!!
I searched "Joan Jett hair" and this video popped up. Anything that brings more 1982-era shag haircuts into the world, I'm in full support of 👍👍😉
Oh my gosh, I just followed this and it worked!
Me too. In Wales- so going to try this 😊
IM A RETIRED HAIR STYLIST OF OVER 35 YEARS AND I LOVE TO KEEP UP ON MY EDUCATION !!
I did the cut this morning and can‘t stop staring at reflecting surfaces 🤩
I am in L O V E with my hair!!!
Thank you so much.
This is my favorite step-by-step hair-cutting video, and I've watched many of them! I've been cutting my own hair for the past year now! Thank you, Jake!
Glad it was helpful My Joyous Heart!
Of course I will still go to a salon for color, but I will save us the almost $150 it's been costing me to manage my mane and let my sweety play with my haircuts from now on.
@@nabel6499 No, my hair is average thickness and fine.
This is exactly why I diy. Yes I risk bad haircuts but at least I'm doing it for free.
Thanks! ❤️
i would love to see how yours turned out! I'm thinking of doing this with side swept bangs as well!
looking for someone that could do a great shag only to be disappointed.
Thank you Jake, you show great generosity in giving this in depth, easy to accomplish

I was scheduled for a haircut just like this but got Covid and had to cancel appointment. I was so devastated because I knew what I wanted and was excited for the change. Luckily, I came across this video during my quarantine, ordered the scissors, and took the plunge! I am so happy I did!! Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I just cut my hair and it looks awesome. It’s really very kind of you to share your knowledge, like you said, we can’t all afford to get pampered and go to professionals, but everybody likes to look and feel beautiful.
Thank you. You helped me save a lot of money. My hair is not as long as the model, but my husband loves it. God Bless You, Mr. Thompson.
Took me 20 minutes to do this haircut tonight and I love it! Thank you. This was the best tutorial out of the bunch that I researched ❤❤❤
I’m so glad my daughter shared this with me. She has hair the length she can sit on and did this. It is so striking on her.
@@SIERRAnBC I saw that video too. I like it as well. You could very well cut off the bottom to shorten it, and it would look great.

Did this hair cut on my curly hair and it turned out great. I love it!
@@sharonlatour6230 thank you for this clarification!

I just did this for my wife. Came out awesome!
Great to hear David! Glad I could help.

Thank you for this! I did it to my hair yesterday and wow! Best cut for my hair type! 👩🏻🦰✌️Also…spray wax??! Never knew. Looks like magic!!
i just did this on myself with no experience whats so ever and using your tutourial really helped me and made it come out so amazing and honestly boosted my cofidence THANK YOUUU
Nice job!
You're the first professional to share a diy. Amazing cut & tips. Thank you!
Unbelievable. Your technique it's been appreciated. Thank you so much. I will try on my hair.
How was it
Thanks for this video; I followed all your instructions and LOVE my new cut! Makes me feel spunky.
You are so welcome Jamie!
This cut is exactly what I want! Thank you so much for making this video!! You are very generous to share your knowledge. Thank you again!
As a fellow hairdresser, this gig is lovely. So helpful. Sharing knowledge is the bomb.
“Guy” is lovely.
I found an entire set with shears, textirizing shears, a comb, and a guarded razor and 2 hair clips for less than $13 on amazon.
I just finished cutting my hair and I want to sat thank you for sharing your knowledge I love it!!
Very cool cut, but it would have been nice to see the back too. Thank you!
Watched dyi’s all afternoon 🥴. Wish I would have taken a before and after picture. I followed along with yours and love how it came out !!💕💕💕💕
I’ve asked several stylist to give this cut and none have come even close! My
Mom used to be a hairstylist but she is unable to do my hair anymore due to aging & dementia. I’ve done this cut on myself one time before (a couple years ago) and it’s time to try it again! Thank you for tips and info. 😊
Also LOVE a hair dresser not intimidated by customers wanting to do their own hair! ❤❤❤
Showing the sections so clearly made this video exceptional.
It was FABULOUS.
Thanks you. BRILLIANT. Love it.
Thank you 🙏 🤲
You don’t show how to determine the length when you cut the sides ponytails?
I think it depends on where you want your shortest layer to begin, and you should also consider if you have waves or curls, because when dry it will make the layer even shorter.
Been waiting for this for years. Thank you very much indeed for freely sharing your expertise. Love this style x❤🎉
This is better than most haircuts I get done by professionals
Highly agree.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My haircut turned out perfect, it looks exactly the way I wanted it to 💜
