hey please help i’m trying to do this on myself tonight . for the two back sections did he basically just comb them to the front , twist them so they’re straight , cut and match the front sections ?
I’ve been a stylist for over 40 years and used to do this haircut in the 80’s and early 90’s. Then the styles changed and straight and flat became the thing and natural curly and/or waving hair got flat ironed, chemically smoothed and straightened and god forbid if the back was longer than the sides which the term “mullet” evolved! The thing with this haircut is many shapes can be obtained from it….fullness and closeness here and there…whatever you look good in is what can be achieved! I am so excited that this is making a comeback and that I can be a part of this great vintage look!
Well I’m sorry to hear that you’ve given up on hairdressers because they couldn’t do his haircut river but maybe just maybe it might be worth showing them this tutorial prior to having your haircut at some point and that way you will hopefully get what you want
The hair dresser you need is someone who has been cutting hair a LONG time...(like 30+ years). This type of haircut isn't specifically taught in schools, any longer. It wasn't when I went, back in '07. However, my first salon was an "old school" salon where this was cut, A LOT (although not in this method, which I like, much better!!). So, find an old school hairdresser and you'll get this cut!
I am going to make sure my village hairdresser sees this. I love this style so much and have worn versions of it for years. Now at 69, I need it again. I can clip it up, wear it down and it is very weatherproof, always a good idea in Ireland! Thank you so much!
I just did this on myself and I really like it. I’ll see if that changes in the following weeks. Lol I will say that because everything was cut straight across the top(above my ears) ended up looking a little more bulky than I wanted (I have medium/coarse hair and pretty thick.) If I do this again I’ll point cut. I went to cosmetology school a long time ago and never went into the industry so I just used my texturizing shears and my limited know-how to thin parts out until satisfied. Make sure if you try this to keep your back straight, elbows up, keep your sections tight, you hair needs to stay wet, and don’t cut past your first knuckle! It really does matter.
Hi Charlie! Well I hope you like in a few weeks time. There is more bulky areas above your ears will either do one of two things settle down or get thicker you could probably use a channel cutting technique or something similar to Debulk those areas. And thanks for the hot tips on doing this technique yourself
I haven't had a professional cut in decades, but I'm finally ready and this is very close to what I think I need. Now, if only I can find a stylist who is willing to watch and able to replicate it! Thanks for sharing the proper technique. Wish me luck.
I love it. The Shag is one of my favorite cuts. Everyone looks good in it. I wish your model was a human although I love that you styled the finished product.
8:36 Finished front view. That's my style. It's what I have close to now. I messed up my hair attempting to layer it myself but my hairdresser fixed it and it is a shag and she does have the back going in a point. My hair won't grow longer than that and I like how it's short in the front but don't look short because of the fullness. My hair is naturally wavy so it works. Saving this video.
This is the haircut I’ve been searching for. I’m a girl of the 1970’s. My hair loves a shag. Now it’s thinner with age but thank you so much for using a model with not super thick hair. I wish I could go to your salon☮️💟
Wonderful thank you very much maybe you should check out today’s video which is another shag haircut but done in a slightly different way and probably even easier
This video was recommended to me by RUclips. Watched it and immediately after cut my hair. I have thick, straight, long hair so cut the bangs to the level of my chin in case something went wrong. It was super easy to do and brought out the few waves that i have. I couldn't be happier with the result. Thank you!
I've had such a hard time trying to find a stylist to give me a beautiful cut like this one. I come out with a bob every time. I may try to do this myself. Thank you for sharing this. I love it!
I just did it, for a moment during the snips I did panic but I just ended a 9 year relationship and i don’t give a damn! Looks amaaaaazing!!! Thanks so much and much love to all out there just do it!
I used this tutorial to cut my shag during the lockdown, and it turned out exactly as it should. Then, when lockdown lasted a little longer than expected, I got lazy and did that ponytail BS cut to trim it (twice!), and I don't even know what to call the results. Don't do the unicorn thing, folks! Last night I found this tutorial again (also added to a watchlist this time). It took longer for me to get the sections right than it did to cut it! Of course it turned out perfectly even though I have longer curlier hair than that mannikin. This is the best wolf cut tutorial, hands down!
I wore this style until I was 40 . Then grew it out one length after my mother-in-law died she was the only one that could cut it like that. I love my hair and it's really long but I'm going to lose it a few weeks after I start chemo at the beginning of August, so I think I will take the plunge now and revisit another time before I cut it really short and eventually shave it.
@@dittohead7044 Thank you for your kind words! It was caught early and for that I am grateful. Staying positive and knowing that this isn't forever. Mammograms ladies!!!!!
I did this and it turned out great! I kept the first front section a bit longer (I was scared lol) and went from there. It looks sooo good on my long wavy hair thank you SO much I've been cutting my layers wrong all this time!!
Hi! I have long wavy hair and I just wanted to know if you constantly have to style it (ex. blowdrying) or if I can just come out of the shower and let it air dry.
I did this the other day and came out amazing! Thank you so much! Anyone who's pondering doing this, you guys should just go for it it's really foolproof lol
Attempted...mild panic attack in the middle that tequila fixed...an hour later & could not be happier with the results! I started freaking out when I saw how the front was on its own before I made my way to the back 😆
Just wanted to say bravo…For those of us that are not professionals you have created a wonderful tutorial that is both simple to follow with incredible results! Out of over 160 videos that I’ve watched I find yours to be the easiest for a “non-professional“ to follow! Just wanted to pop in and say thank you!
Wonderful June I always love hearing from people who are non-professionals that enjoy the channel so much thank you thank you thank you I’m so pleased that you find entertainment in what I produce
The Life Of Hair Ahwww, so nice of you to personally answer my comment! I don’t know how you do it! To take that kind of time is definitely to be admired! I thank you and I must say that not only do I find entertainment in what you produce; but I find beauty and style! Especially in these times when a lot of us can’t go out and get a haircut because of Covid I am endangered because of my immune system so I had to either let my hair grow wild or find a way to cut it. I was about to give up…I can’t thank you enough!
I loved this ! I wore my hair like this in the seventies. I have not been able to find someone to cut my hair like this way since. I’m 65 …and I still love this cut! Thank you for sharing…
I wish I could’ve found your tutorial before. Yesterday, after watching 10+ RUclips tutorials for shags and layered haircuts, I cut my hair utilizing the techniques from 3 different vids. I worked hard the crown area bc I wanted volume. It turned out great in my opinion. However the back looks bit choppy; I did the ponytail above forehead technique, but with yours I’m definitely trying it next time when my hair grows a bit more. I basically now have a layered bob with volume in crown. But def want the shaggy hairstyle. Love that you go straight to the point, very clear instructions and specially love the non-over chatting video. Thx for this!
I researched and watched sooo many tutorials, and this is definitely the BEST one!! So easy to follow! I watched your video a couple of times before I bit the bullet and did this cut on myself. My hair has so much volume, feels so light, and it’s so curly now! (curls that weren’t evident before!) Thank you so much James!! ❤️
I am not a hairdresser, but today i do my first mullet at home by this tutorial)))) i was scared, but the wish was stronger))) even I am can make this haircut easy with pleasure, thank you very much! I am fond of result!!!!
Had the shag in 70s , short version. This cut was great. Reminds me of Heather Locklear. Who will believe; the SHAG IS BACK lol. Stay safe Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
In a DIY session it turned to the haircut I always wanted to have...it took me a whole night to gather the courage for this experiment on myself. But the result was awesome🤩. It did it to the mid length and wow..my children were of the view..OMG. what are doing ?? But YES..I did it and in love with this haircut. Thanks fr this tutorial😀😃👍👍
I wore two haircuts from age 15 to 40-something, both of them Vidal Sassoon. I started with the asymmetrical (short on one side) bob at 15. I was the only one who wore it. I then grew that out to this shag and wore it until my hair got too fine and the front thinned so that it didn't fall as it should any more. I would still be wearing it if my hair would grow in. This was an excellent tutorial and illustration of what a great cut should be. Thanks.
Oh. My. God. This is an excellent tutorial! I appreciate how to the point and direct the instructions are and the different camera angles are so helpful. I am a licensed hairstylist and I'm constantly watching hair vids and this is one of my favorites. Thank you for the simple content and hope to see more! Subscribed!
i saw this late last night and tried it just now. i tried the tiktok/brad mondo method and 🤦🏻♀️ and your video SAVED MY HAIR. i only watched it once and went off memory. its foolproof. you are the best. it means so much to people like me who want to take pride in the appearance and try fun things but dont have the money to go to the salon monthly. it gives us dignity. thank you. ❤️
Thank you for this tutorial!! This is the first shag video I’ve seen that makes sense, you broke it down so easily. I’ve done this haircut on a friend and on a client, they were both extremely happy, and their hair sat beautifully. Love your videos!
Thanks so much for the broken down tutorial! I have a client who comes in asking for a “Farrah Fawcet” style look and I always have a hard time finding a simplified way to do it, since I’m timed on all haircuts. Thanks so much!!
I wonderful Jillian I hope this works out well for you and your client gets exactly what she wants this is a great technique to create that Farrah style
This is such a fun haircut! Sassy and versatile. Clients that usually want this cut, seem to have loads of personality and wear it well! Edgy and fun! You remind me of my teacher Anthony Barrow, from London England. He taught me precision cutting in the mid 90’s. I’ve had my license for over 25 yrs. I worked in a Salon in London, Ontario; Canada. He was the Salon owners friend and came over to Canada, to teach. He was a very good teacher! You bring back great memories. Thank you! Many compliments are sent your way! Cheers!

Love that cut. Had this cut in my 20s. Had very curly hair and it was rated nicely with this technique. Too many hairdressers don't do the angles correctly. So lovely
Yes this is a cracking technique on very curly head such in fact I’ve got a video on very curly hair on my channel at the moment cut into a shag style I am a particular fan of that look personally it is certainly not for everyone but it is one of my potential favourite haircuts for curly hair
IM GOING TO TRY THIS TODAY! wish me luck :)) ive had no experience with cutting hair whatsoever ill update how it goes! update: I DID IT A FEW WEEKS AGO BUT I FORGOT TO UPDATE LOL if went soo well!! im not sure if i actually managed to cut a shag but i definitely got more layers in my hair and im happy with the result!
Commenting after having done this a month ago (with minimal hair cutting experience) and it is genuinely the best haircut I’ve ever had and I’ve gotten nothing but compliments on it. I’m non-binary and usually feel uncomfortable keeping my hair long but this hairstyle makes me feel like I can grow it out even more and still look androgynous! It’s also super versatile so I can look more femme or masc depending on how I style it/what I wear. This video is legit
I normally never leave comments on youtube, but I just have to thank you so so much for this tutorial! I followed this video and ended up with a beautiful haircut and i've never cut my hair before:o So many people thought I got my hair cut at a hairsalon and i've never received so many compliments about my hair before:D Really recommend this hairstyle if you have a bit of wavy hair and want to make those locks come to life. Another plus is that I don't have to style my hair in the morning, it just looks so chic and effortless on it's own. And even if you mess a bit up, it won't be noticeable. Thank you so much again!
This is one of my favourite haircuts, thankyou for sharing all your techniques, it’s all I’ve been watching while on lockdown, can’t wait to get back in the salon and try all this new stuff 🤣🤣
yes im gonna do it today will update later 😼 atleast namjoon will be proud of me edit : OKAY YEAH I DID IT I LOVE IT but I think I'll need to cut a bit more hair to make it look more like a mullet shag than just a layered haircut
I did this the first time with your technique and it’s not mullet I wanted lmao, but I’m really satisfied with your technique and the result. Thank you so much. 10/10 I recommend really 😭❤️
Just do the front sections this way and stick to a "bob" in the back with some blending around the ears, maybe some layering for movement for a compromise. You'll get a brush back effect around the front into the back.
Ohmigosh! I had this hair cut years ago and it was THE BEST cut of my life. But I lost the stylist's name. I have been asking for "a long shag" ever since but never got this cut again. Thank you! Now I can better communicate to hairdressers. And seriously, everyone: try this cut if you have wavy hair. It's amazing. Looks good wavy. Looks good blown out. Looks good as bedhead. Looks good after the beach.

Wonderful I hope you get the haircut you desire 👍🏻
Thank you , clear instructions without the hype. How I would have loved these videos back in the "60's"!!
Super, In one of my forthcoming videos I do actually have it on a human that will be in a few weeks time. 👍🏻
@@TheLifeOfHair yes, thank you for giving us the time to see the finished style, as many videos just show the how, and not the what.
Thanks For your comment
This is the haircut I’ve been searching for. I’m a girl of the 1970’s. My hair loves a shag. Now it’s thinner with age but thank you so much for using a model with not super thick hair. I wish I could go to your salon☮️💟
This is the best non complicated shag video I’ve seen so far & excellent results
Thank you 😊
Wonderful thank you very much maybe you should check out today’s video which is another shag haircut but done in a slightly different way and probably even easier
This video was recommended to me by RUclips. Watched it and immediately after cut my hair. I have thick, straight, long hair so cut the bangs to the level of my chin in case something went wrong. It was super easy to do and brought out the few waves that i have. I couldn't be happier with the result. Thank you!
Fantastic Helen thank you very much for the comment glad it went well
I've had such a hard time trying to find a stylist to give me a beautiful cut like this one. I come out with a bob every time. I may try to do this myself. Thank you for sharing this. I love it!
Steph my pleasure entirely glad you loved it 👍🏻😁
I just did it, for a moment during the snips I did panic but I just ended a 9 year relationship and i don’t give a damn!
I came here from TikTok and I love this videos already it’s not as complicated as other videos thank for this video ily
Wonderful Alex thank you very much for your comment help you get the results you wanted all the best James
Wow this comment is really powerful thank you for sharing
Prayers. I’m sorry to read when people are going thru such struggles. Hope you have a good prognosis
@@TheLifeOfHair You are welcome! And
Thank you! I got this!
@@dittohead7044 Thank you for your kind words! It was caught early and for that I am grateful. Staying positive and knowing that this isn't forever. Mammograms ladies!!!!!
This is exactly what they looked like! I'm impressed.
Cheers 👍🏻😁
Wore this shag back in the 70's!! Had wavy hair and it was really easy and fun!!
Ive used this tutorial for almost half a year and coming back for a refresh. This tutorial is so simple thank you
Wonderful Emma glad you enjoyed the video and it works for you
I did this and it turned out great! I kept the first front section a bit longer (I was scared lol) and went from there. It looks sooo good on my long wavy hair thank you SO much I've been cutting my layers wrong all this time!!
Wonderful beth glad it worked well for you thanks for letting me know
Hi! I have long wavy hair and I just wanted to know if you constantly have to style it (ex. blowdrying) or if I can just come out of the shower and let it air dry.
@@sonakshimonga6750 i have long wavy hair too and i need to know this too 😭
@@sonakshimonga6750 im sorry for the late reply but no it does not require styling for me.
@@cody1356 I don't style my hair
I did this the other day and came out amazing! Thank you so much! Anyone who's pondering doing this, you guys should just go for it it's really foolproof lol
Wonderful thank you very much for letting me know so pleased it worked out well for you
Attempted...mild panic attack in the middle that tequila fixed...an hour later & could not be happier with the results! I started freaking out when I saw how the front was on its own before I made my way to the back 😆
Wonderful glad it worked out well for you in the end hope you enjoy wearing it
Just wanted to say bravo…For those of us that are not professionals you have created a wonderful tutorial that is both simple to follow with incredible results!
You are the best hair dresser ! I just cut my hair just like this it is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you so much you are awesome!!!
so i just did this haircut on myself and IM SO EXCITED AND PROUD AND IT WAS SO EASY THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! SHAG MULLET FOR LIFE! :)
Wonderful Lilly that is fantastic to read so pleased it’s worked out well for you thank you for letting me know
@@TheLifeOfHair Good job Love your show👌👌👍
Thank you! Many young hairdressers in our area do not know to complete the shag. ❤️👍🏼❤️
Yes this haircut is not all that popular these days fortunately it is having a revival so younger hairdressers will learn how to do it
I just cut my hair while following your tutorial and the results are AMAZINGGG, although I have zero experience lol !!!!!!! Thank you so much !!
Fantastic so pleased it’s worked out for you thank you for letting me know
I loved this ! I wore my hair like this in the seventies. I have not been able to find someone to cut my hair like this way since. I’m 65 …and I still love this cut! Thank you for sharing…
I love it. It looks really nice. Easy demo and simple. Less talking and easy to follow. Ur amazing.
I finally got the courage to do this, best cut I’ve had in years! Thank you 🙏🏻
Wonderful so please thank you very much for letting me know
Me too but tweaked mine a little to be a hybrid between this shag and a Brigitte Bardot-esque cut. Easy cut!
Superb I’d love to know how you get on when you try my technique 😁👍🏻
I researched and watched sooo many tutorials, and this is definitely the BEST one!! So easy to follow! I watched your video a couple of times before I bit the bullet and did this cut on myself. My hair has so much volume, feels so light, and it’s so curly now! (curls that weren’t evident before!) Thank you so much James!! ❤️
Wonderful zee glad it worked out for you
I am not a hairdresser, but today i do my first mullet at home by this tutorial)))) i was scared, but the wish was stronger))) even I am can make this haircut easy with pleasure, thank you very much! I am fond of result!!!!
Wow fantastic well done
Had the shag in 70s , short version.
This cut was great.
Reminds me of Heather Locklear.
Who will believe; the SHAG IS BACK lol.
Stay safe
Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Fantastic Eva yes the shag is back 👍🏻
I used this method (roughly I am not very detailed or talented) and it WORKS SO WELL!!! thank you so much😸😸
Wonderful so pleased it worked out well for you
In a DIY session it turned to the haircut I always wanted to have...it took me a whole night to gather the courage for this experiment on myself. But the result was awesome🤩. It did it to the mid length and wow..my children were of the view..OMG. what are doing ?? But YES..I did it and in love with this haircut. Thanks fr this tutorial😀😃👍👍
Wonderful glad it worked out well for you
Woah, so simple yet genius. Thank you!
Your welcome ✌🏻
This is one of the best haircut classes I've ever seen. Thanks!
Wonderful glad you loved it all the best James
I wore two haircuts from age 15 to 40-something, both of them Vidal Sassoon. I started with the asymmetrical (short on one side) bob at 15. I was the only one who wore it. I then grew that out to this shag and wore it until my hair got too fine and the front thinned so that it didn't fall as it should any more. I would still be wearing it if my hair would grow in. This was an excellent tutorial and illustration of what a great cut should be. Thanks.
This was the best tutorial on a mullet that I found. Loved it, it was easy to follow. I think I did a good job. Thxs
superb glad you enjoy it
Did this cut just now, it turned out great. Just what i need for my type 2 hair that is sometimes wavy but never really straight.
Wonderful amazing to hear
Oh. My. God. This is an excellent tutorial! I appreciate how to the point and direct the instructions are and the different camera angles are so helpful. I am a licensed hairstylist and I'm constantly watching hair vids and this is one of my favorites. Thank you for the simple content and hope to see more! Subscribed!
Wonderful super pleased you enjoyed it and good on you for keeping up with continuous education big high-five
i saw this late last night and tried it just now. i tried the tiktok/brad mondo method and 🤦🏻♀️ and your video SAVED MY HAIR. i only watched it once and went off memory. its foolproof. you are the best. it means so much to people like me who want to take pride in the appearance and try fun things but dont have the money to go to the salon monthly. it gives us dignity. thank you. ❤️
Thank you for this tutorial!! This is the first shag video I’ve seen that makes sense, you broke it down so easily. I’ve done this haircut on a friend and on a client, they were both extremely happy, and their hair sat beautifully. Love your videos!
I did it and it was awesome I can’t believe this was so easy just like that
Wow that’s fantastic to know Claire brilliant
i am SUPER excited to execute this look today on a long time client. Its gonna be oerfect. Thank you!
ah fantastic, i hope it turned out well 👍🏻
Thanks so much for the broken down tutorial!
Timed? Geez, no wonder I never get what I ask for. I'm sorry you have to work under those conditions. I'm also sorry for the clients!
Cheers!
Fantastic Lisa what a wonderful backstory I love hearing peoples stories I think that’s why I’m a hairdresser on the shopfloor still because I love people’s life stories and I love to have insights into what memories some of my videos in vote for people so thank you so much for commenting
The best haircut tutorials in RUclips, hope to see more 70´ s haircuts styles, thanks for sharing your knowledge :)
You’re welcome Alex thank you appreciate the videos yes more 70s haircuts one of my favourite areas 1965 to 1979 Some of the best haircuts the world has ever seen were created in this time

Absolutely a super easy technique to do glad you enjoy that if you use it I would love to know how you get on
Love that cut.
IM GOING TO TRY THIS TODAY! wish me luck :)) ive had no experience with cutting hair whatsoever
ill update how it goes!
update: I DID IT A FEW WEEKS AGO BUT I FORGOT TO UPDATE LOL if went soo well!! im not sure if i actually managed to cut a shag but i definitely got more layers in my hair and im happy with the result!
How did it go?

Thank you for giving props to Vidal...I was his model for the debut of this cut, and I wore it that way for many many years.
This is my all time favorite hair cut.Thank you for sharing
it's rite up there with one of mine Elena, your welcome. 😀👍🏻
Modern day scene queen
The best camera angle for tutorials!!!
Thank you glad you appreciated it
omg this haircut is so easy to follow n the end result is stunning ! thxsm!
I love 💕 this brings back memories of youth.
Wonderful Lee glad you enjoyed the video
This is one of my favourite haircuts, thankyou for sharing all your techniques, it’s all I’ve been watching while on lockdown, can’t wait to get back in the salon and try all this new stuff 🤣🤣
Watched this once. Did the hair cut 5 mins later. One ofmy favorite I’ve ever done. Thank You
Wonderful that is a lovely comment thank you very much great to read
been cutting my own hair with this video for 2 years! THANK U
yes im gonna do it today will update later 😼
atleast namjoon will be proud of me
edit : OKAY YEAH I DID IT I LOVE IT but I think I'll need to cut a bit more hair to make it look more like a mullet shag than just a layered haircut
@Úna Ní Fhlaithbheartaigh THANK YOUU
Well done epic job so pleased you did it thank you for your comment
youtube recommending me this video *knows* i want a mullet but i have curly hair with an undercut 😭
Fantastic Vale great comment Time to go out that undercut and have a curly mullet 😁👍🏻
Curls are lool very good on a mullet
this was exactly how i transitioned my hair. i love my mullet!!
I did this the first time with your technique and it’s not mullet I wanted lmao, but I’m really satisfied with your technique and the result. Thank you so much. 10/10 I recommend really 😭❤️
Superb glad that you liked it and it worked out well for you 😁👍🏻
Just do the front sections this way and stick to a "bob" in the back with some blending around the ears, maybe some layering for movement for a compromise.
Wonderful Emily that is great to raise so hope you get the haircut you want
Finally, a cut that would totally suit my hair!
