I am making sure my hairdresser sees this. I adore this shape, for me, I would like the length to break just past my shoulders. As a 69 year old, I see no reason not to have the hair I have always loved. It suited me then, it will suit me now. A great length for up/ downwear and weather proof. Always a good idea in Ireland. Thank you so much for this!

This cut is great and easy to style even for thin hair. It never really went out of style, it's how you style it that keeps it current as well as keeping your wardrobe and make up current. This cut also is great to pull up in a ponytail and leave the bangs out and a bit of wisps on the sides. The way it is layered makes a nice, easy little updo that can be casual or formal depending on your efforts in styling it. Fabulous haircut!

The unbeatable shag! Had my best shag in high school cut by Paul Mcgregor. Wash and wear, needed nothing else. Not many hair products back then. This one is great! Thanks.
I feel sad for her, so sad seeing her so anxious and crying, but the haircut is amazing and suits her so well, so well done and so neat. I have a bit grown out short bob with an undercut that is giving my waves a triangular shape, so I want a shag, if doesn't suits me, well, hair grows back. Stay safe!!

Wonderful Shannon maybe show this video to a hairdresser there would be no harm I certainly wouldn’t be offended if all of my clients showed me a video of how they would like their hair at the end of the day all you want to do is make peoples hair look nice and in the style that they want.
I have the same hair type. I grew my bangs out because the front is less curly like hers. With this cut I see bangs might be the way to go again. Love the texture. I would let the length go and get what he originally planned. This style is so lovely on her! 😊
Wonderful Heidi yes if you’re off things are slightly straighter with his haircut it really works quite well so I would go back to having bangs if I was you
Thank you so much James! I’ve been using this technique for a few months now from your previous video. I so appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. You rock!!
After seeing your 1st video on this cut, I forwarded it to a hairdresser at a higher end salon, picked at random. I have fine, wavy hair that tends frizzy and flyaway. She said she could do it, but watched it 3 times to be sure. She also razor cut my ends to increase look of volume. I don't have a diffuser so let it air dry until almost dry. Then I put in on top with scrunchie to dry completely and gave it a lift. Luv it!
Maybe you could find a hairdresser show them the video I’m sure they wouldn’t be offended I’m certainly not offended when people show me a video at the end of the day all I want is the client to have a haircut that they want and if it requires show me a video then so be it.
The shag was one of the best haircuts ever. It still is a great cut for do many women. It is easy to care for and offers great looks to dry natural or to dry and curl.
I did this hair cut a while back on a client the same steps and she was so nervous too, but I told her to trust the process and it came out so cut !!! It if her hair texture perfectly !!!
This is a go to hair cut for me, many times! I love this for me! My natural curls pop big time and so easy to maintain! Amy Phillpot, you Rock the Green!
I wish I could find someone to do mine the same, in 30 years no one has managed it yet, even after showing pictures. It was my favourite style at 15 years of age, 70 now but it would still suit me
I just tried the long graduation shag cut but leaving the back it look exactly like this. I shall continue my back hair using the slide technique this video. I have curly hair and a shag cut was just amazing.thanks!
I’ve been doing this on my head on and off since I was 13... by myself. You really can’t mess up a shag unless you have very straight hair.luckily the shorter I cut mine , the curlier it gets😊. Learned some great tips thanks!
Wonderful Brin glad you enjoy this haircut and I’ve been wearing it for such a long time I think it’s a cracking style one that has really stood the test of time I know it’s gone in and out of fashion but I think it’s one of those haircuts that will always be there I have certainly not stopped cutting it for most of my career either softer or to this more extreme version if you will thanks for your comment all the best James
I lovvveee this haircut! I want mine like this and as a retired now (this year) hairstylist, this is a classic and such a flashback, this is a easy hairstyle when you have curly hair... Love how you did the graduation of this! Much ❤️ from Atlanta, Ga
This is perfect timing for me, James. I’ve been doing your original cut for about ten months now. My husband cuts it for me, he calls himself, “Vidal”) and my hair is now long enough at the back now that I’m getting the long point at the back. My hair is light wave/curl, but thin. I would like to keep more weight at the back.
Happy New Year James. Great video and superb classic Sassoonesque technique. I have on old vhs video tape back from the 80's, when a guy Chris? from the tv prog 'That's Life’ trains with Sassoon. He does a shag haircut and the precision taken always greatly inspired me. I love your Sassoon classic techniques. Keep up with your great work it's truly appreciated. Shaun, Nottingham, UK😀
Thank you very much Cathy yes I am going crazy that is for sure I was okay the first time I wasn’t too bad at the second time but this third one well it’s doing me and that’s for sure RUclips is keeping me sane
I now know that the defuser does make a huge difference. My hair is at mid to upper back. I could easily wear this style with little effort. Great looking for poolside outdoors. This absolutely looks great on her. Like the color too. I think I will go pink though. Peace out everyone. God is good.
That is a very becoming cut and works well for wavy and curly hair. I enjoyed watching you do your craft! You could really see how seriously damaged the ends were from the color.
I love this cut but I would want some length in the front also. I don’t know if I want to try it myself or go to the salon. Rarely my hair comes out the way I want it at the salon and being age 50 my hair doesn’t grow as fast. What to do lol. Thank you for the video! ❤️🦋
I was very active in producing these (Videl Sasson) cuts in the 70's. I agree with your method, but not with the length you cut it around the front. Too short. In months time it will be the length she wanted, but the fringe will be too long as will the crown to back lengths. Curly, wavy hair is different when the client washes and styles their hair at home. It isn't loaded with conditioners, left on for half an hour or more, while combing it very straight the whole time. It shrinks a lot. Sometimes the top layers are too long for the overall shrinkage that goes on, typically at the front, leaving a highly bouncy front area and a flat crown and back. So, on curly hair, leave it longer around the face, unless the client has asked for it to be shorter, or they have stronger features that suit their face being framed by shorter curls, and the back being in balance. In other words, for a shorter overall cut. The overall length from front to back must correspond and balance. It was clear that she didn't want to lose her length at the back, which you knew, but then went short anyway, leaving an unbalanced line from front to back and crown to front and back. Only stating this because i saw so many stylists not actually listening to the clients, or thinking of how it will look when the client deals with it. And the latter is the most important thing. Balance is key, not fearful clients seeing so much being removed and changes being made throwing the whole look off. It took many years to grow those lengths, and to cut them off so short around the face like that was pointless. I have loose curly hair myself, so i know how it feels when it's made t look nicer by the stylist, but once it's shampoo'd, It's a different story. Curly hair should often be shampood after cutting to bring back it's natural curl and bounce before drying. She will need only the fringe, crown to back and back length area cut for a few times in future to balance it out. I don't have just one shaggy style/length in mind. I'm talking in general. Cutting the whole front to the shoulder line so short, then leaving a really long crown to back length is like the back was not cut, only the front. I understand she told you mid way to leave her lengths at the back, but only because you went way too short at the front and sides. Balance and understanding curly/wavy hair, and also the care once home, is exactly what clients expect. Not styles for styles sake in the eye of the stylist. Clurly hair cut so short around a face doesn't move. It tightens short, hugging the head. Lots of products are required to make it heavier. Hope you get what i mean.
Oh thank the Lord I'm not the only one who thinks it dusn't look right. I started saying to the hairdresser 'Your cutting too short, don't cut it short'. Soon, that changed to a yell, 'You're cutting her a mullet' lol. I know she asked the guy to stop cutting but by that time, he had already chopped off the length at the front and sides and so had to leave the back as if it belonged to a different style. To me, the hairdresser made a serious mistake in taking far too much off in the very first cut then he had to compensate for that by continuing to cut front and sides short. No, I don't think this is a good look, it's no more like Farrah Faucetts haircut than mine is. If you're reading this Mr. Hairdresser, I apoligise but I think you screwed up with that overly short first cut!
I hope to make the same haircut by myself lol. I never cut my own hair ! Maybe I will try on a wig first. Thank u for ur amazing work❤️ love from France
Sign me up.. mine is already cut that way but grown out since Covid! I love the sexy, beach waves, lioness look! I get way more compliments than if I were to blow dry, hot iron and curl or style it. I add leave in light conditioner and fluff it up! I'm ready! 👏👏👏👏😍🥰🥰
Watching from America. I sent the mannequin video to my stylist to look at..I hope she will be able to cut my hair like this. Appreciate you thank you. May God bless you.
Loved it James felt a little bit like I was holding my breath as your client got nervous eek! But a lovely Finnish would love to do this on my sister but she wouldn't be brave enough 🤣👍❤
Did this cut all the time in the 80's, however, we left the bangs longer, almost to the end of the nose, which caused the hair on the sides to be longer, and then would go back and cut the bangs again to length.
My favourite bit is finding out why the first section is BEHIND the ear. I knew to do that, from my first set of training years ago, but no one ever tells you why
most of the schools don't even know the answer. we usually divide where the head curves away. that extreme "curve"/corner happens : 1)behind the ear 2) at the parietal ridge 3) bottom of occipital bone > to nape transition 4) mid crown> to apex transition 5)mid crown> to bottom of occipital bone. 6) apex > to forehead transition you must divide at those points so you are aware of those corners, and you are aware that you must change your elevation at those points which will prevent too much overdirection. corners cause the hair to travel longer distance until they reach the "cutting point" so more length is saved at those corners.
The guy that cutt my hair told me to lean forward while he cut my long thick wavy hair. It came out exactly like Farrahs’. I’ll never forget that day. I’m now 74 .
I would love to have my haircut like that. Where can I get one and how much does it cost ? I used to have my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon. And always came out feeling great!!!

The unbeatable shag! Had my best shag in high school cut by Paul Mcgregor. Wash and wear, needed nothing else. Not many hair products back then. This one is great! Thanks.
I love this haircut!!! I'm going to try and do it myself... You explain it so well I know I can do it with no worries
Stay safe!!
Hmmm... I didn't notice her crying. I must have missed that in the video. Her hair turned out beautiful. I love it. I would love this cut.
@@nutritioncoachjo at the end she looks really red, her throat is moving the same way it moves when someone hiccups when crying, her eyes are swollen... but well, hair grows, she looks stunning and I will try this haircut for sure
Thanks for sharing the shag is always a classic the hair looks so much more healthy than previously
Absolutely Vashti, yes it looked so much better 👍🏻
I love this cut I have a hard time trying to find anyone that can do this cut
Wonderful Shannon maybe show this video to a hairdresser there would be no harm I certainly wouldn’t be offended if all of my clients showed me a video of how they would like their hair at the end of the day all you want to do is make peoples hair look nice and in the style that they want.
She looks amazing! Love this haircut! Beautiful!! Love those curls!❤✌
Wonderful Maureen thank you very much glad Liked it
I have the same hair type.
You rock!!
Wonderful Jenny glad you appreciate this technique and it works well for you
After seeing your 1st video on this cut, I forwarded it to a hairdresser at a higher end salon, picked at random.
Luv it!
I loved and wore this cut ...would love to find someone around that knew whst they were doing, I'd do it again.
I’m watching and loving your lead up to the client FREAK OUT!! GO JAMES!!!!!
Wonderful Carmen glad you like the tension building we got there in the end she was very happy
I did this hair cut a while back on a client the same steps and she was so nervous too, but I told her to trust the process and it came out so cut !!! It if her hair texture perfectly !!!
Wicked glad it went well for you
This is a go to hair cut for me, many times! I love this for me! My natural curls pop big time and so easy to maintain! Amy Phillpot, you Rock the Green!
I wish I could find someone to do mine the same, in 30 years no one has managed it yet, even after showing pictures. It was my favourite style at 15 years of age, 70 now but it would still suit me
I really really want this haircut, it’s so fun and laid back!
Sorry I’m not sure is Jennifer go for it
I just tried the long graduation shag cut but leaving the back it look exactly like this. I shall continue my back hair using the slide technique this video. I have curly hair and a shag cut was just amazing.thanks!
I would say jatt if you don’t feel like Adding the back in it’s looks fine you don’t need to to 👍🏻
Love it James , she did look scared , bless her but look at the final result 👍🏼 I always admire your work ....
Thank you James it’s a great video; love love the way you explain, you are an awesome teacher!
Beautiful cut James and very informative as usual .. thankyou ❤️x
Cheers Lauren 😁✌🏻
I learned so much from doing this haircut. Thank you. It is such a fun haircut to do.
Wicked Melissa that’s great 👍🏻
I’ve been giving myself this same cut since the 80s by cutting while my hair is upside down. Brush all to the front while bent over and voila
I lovvveee this haircut! I want mine like this and as a retired now (this year) hairstylist, this is a classic and such a flashback, this is a easy hairstyle when you have curly hair... Love how you did the graduation of this!
Much ❤️ from Atlanta, Ga
Wonderful Tammie glad you appreciated the video thank you very much for your comment all best James
Wonderful Shaun thanks very much for your comment always appreciated my friend happy New Year to you too
Beautifully done! I went batshit crazy being locked down only once. Can't imagine three times. Hang in there and thanks for the awesome tutorials 😀
Thank you very much Cathy yes I am going crazy that is for sure I was okay the first time I wasn’t too bad at the second time but this third one well it’s doing me and that’s for sure RUclips is keeping me sane
Very useful and simple technic but the result is awesome ..great job ..I will try for my clients Thanks so much for sharing 😀👍🙏🙏
Wicked Frieda enjoy using it 👍🏻
Reminds me of the Toni /Tony curl model on the box of home permanents! Gosh I wish I could find it and show you! Ahhh thr 70’s-early 80’s.
It does!
I am so happy I came upon your video! I want to understand hair art
Wow that looks great I'm going to show this video to my stylist . Thank you for the video x
I now know that the defuser does make a huge difference. My hair is at mid to upper back. I could easily wear this style with little effort. Great looking for poolside outdoors. This absolutely looks great on her. Like the color too. I think I will go pink though. Peace out everyone. God is good.
Thank you Renee for a lovely comment 🙏🏻
That was such a great tutorial of a Shag haircut !! Wonderfully taught! I appreciate u😊
Wow !!! I love this !!! Awesome job !!! So much talent !!! You nailed this !!! She looks amazing !!!
That is a very becoming cut and works well for wavy and curly hair. I enjoyed watching you do your craft! You could really see how seriously damaged the ends were from the color.
Best explanation of this haircut EVER!!!!
Looks Awsome, you are a serious professional, I don’t know why clients get so nervous and agitated, it’s only hair.
Thank you very much Rebecca glad you appreciated the video
It’s a super simple pivot point shag but hairdressers never get mine right
Absolutely vanilla L 👍🏻
Looks great, this is my favourite style by far! 🌟
Wonderful glad you like the style
I love this cut but I would want some length in the front also. I don’t know if I want to try it myself or go to the salon. Rarely my hair comes out the way I want it at the salon and being age 50 my hair doesn’t grow as fast. What to do lol. Thank you for the video! ❤️🦋
I love this cut, would this cut work if you have thinning hair.Thank you for the video
Thanks for your detailed comment
I went to one VS in London UK) in 1979 yes it was all that & as I recall they made me feel like a rockstar
I agree! Too short in frint
@@goldenretrieverpuppies958 agree. It makes young women look like they've had a 1970's shampoo and set for older women from the front.
You're great! Wow! You're on top.of everything always! Bless you! 🌹
Thank you very much for your comments always much appreciated Hope you’re well
This is a lot like a haircut I got 50 yrs. Ago at a Sassoon salon on a rooftop in New York City.
Thank you for sharing
I hope to make the same haircut by myself lol. I never cut my own hair ! Maybe I will try on a wig first. Thank u for ur amazing work❤️ love from France
Wonderful good luck hope it all goes well you’re very welcome thank you for your comment
Thank you so much! Love your work James ❤️
Your very welcome Vanessa pleased you enjoy it 😁👌🏻
Sign me up.. mine is already cut that way but grown out since Covid! I love the sexy, beach waves, lioness look! I get way more compliments than if I were to blow dry, hot iron and curl or style it. I add leave in light conditioner and fluff it up! I'm ready! 👏👏👏👏😍🥰🥰
Watching your videos, super technique 👌from Russia with love😁
Wicked thank you 🙏🏻
Watching from America. I sent the mannequin video to my stylist to look at..I hope she will be able to cut my hair like this. Appreciate you thank you. May God bless you.
Wonderful Christian greetings Wonderful I hope you get the haircut you want
It is a lovely haircut James ! well done !
Thank you Christos ✌🏻😁
Loved it James felt a little bit like I was holding my breath as your client got nervous eek! But a lovely Finnish would love to do this on my sister but she wouldn't be brave enough 🤣👍❤
LOL glad you like the suspense
🐦
Thank you ...you are a very caring person to mention that we are in this together❤🙋
You’re very welcome Dee
Did this cut all the time in the 80's, however, we left the bangs longer, almost to the end of the nose, which caused the hair on the sides to be longer, and then would go back and cut the bangs again to length.
It looks so cool on her!
Yes it definitely suited her hey
My favourite bit is finding out why the first section is BEHIND the ear. I knew to do that, from my first set of training years ago, but no one ever tells you why
most of the schools don't even know the answer.
we usually divide where the head curves away.
that extreme "curve"/corner happens :
1)behind the ear
2) at the parietal ridge
3) bottom of occipital bone > to nape transition
4) mid crown> to apex transition
5)mid crown> to bottom of occipital bone.
6) apex > to forehead transition
you must divide at those points so you are aware of those corners, and you are aware that you must change your elevation at those points which will prevent too much overdirection.
corners cause the hair to travel longer distance until they reach the "cutting point" so more length is saved at those corners.
Superb Rachel glad you appreciated that
Thank you for this superb additional comment
You never asked? I always ask if im curious about something and I don't worry about too many questions.
Love it. This is the wolf haircut..❣
Pivoting….. oh yes. This will look great! You are a kind sole! Where are you I want my hair cut in a shag! ✌️❤️🌷
Glorious freakin hairstyle!!! ❤
Thank you very much
The guy that cutt my hair told me to lean forward while he cut my long thick wavy hair. It came out exactly like Farrahs’. I’ll never forget that day. I’m now 74 .
Fantastic love that story
I would love to have my haircut like that. Where can I get one and how much does it cost ? I used to have my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon. And always came out feeling great!!!
Love love love it…gorgeous work
I love this Shage hair cut. Can it be done on short hair???
Great cut! Used to color my mahogany brown. I let it grow out . Great curly, silver-gray hiding underneath. Who knew?
Fantastic Deborah yes sometimes I colour are here for so long we’ve got no idea what is hiding underneath
Totally dig the final results. I would love this cut.
Wonderful that is great thank you for commenting
@@TheLifeOfHair I cut my hair this past week with your lesson, and turned out great. Invested in a good pair of hair scissors last year.
