Thumbs up! Not many hairdressers use horizontal section. There are so much benefits of cutting horizontally, it can easily maintain weight and the length (at the top of the head) at any point of haircut. I can said hairdressers who understand the horizontal technique are the genius of graduation.
Does horizontal graduation (generally) build more weight vertically because the vertical shape is controlled by overdirection and not cutting line (like with vertical graduation)? From what I understand, heavier vertical shapes are easier to create by using overdirection while softer vertical shapes (round layer, square layer, soft graduation) are easier to create by using the cutting line/finger angle. This is what makes horizontal graduation create heavier shapes (vertically), because it's created using overdirection?
Great respect for precision! I apprenticed for a stylist who would get on me when I cut like this. He taught me to cut dry and visually which I am thankful for. I am thankful that learned many techniques from people whom I apprenticed for. Now I am guided by Jesus when cutting 🙌🏻🙂❤️
Ah fantastic Mary, yes I have a ton of salon friendly hair cuts to show, if you haven’t already check out my playlists on my RUclips home page and check out the hair cuts play list
Great video James! I have been using this haircut for a month now in my salon, I will say I've had one problem that I keep coming into, I'm not able to get the sections near the hairline as short as you have them, like in your example the hair on the sideburns and back hairline is clipper length, but when I try to do it the hair is still pretty long like over an inch in length, I don't know where I would be going wrong?
Hi Jacob thank you very much you a question make sure that your first section is as thin as possible right on the hairline against the scalp and cut the first line with a horizontal elevation proceed with the entire haircut as you did previously and you saw in the video perimeter a little bit tighter and you can go back in with a gentle scissor overcame just on the outer perimeter make sure that you retain a very angled comb so that you do not eat into your graduation How do I helped all the best
Cracking video James, super engaging and educational. Is there hair types you would deem this less appropriate on, or make it harder to create a nice shape?
It’s one of those shapes billy that you can use on a lot of different hair types depending on how you’d like it to be in the long run,One hair type to be really aware of is think course hair types you can use it on course providing you’re looking for the hair to be really wide. The thing to remember is that the shape is triangular in the long run so the thicker the hair the hair the more triangular it will be once it’s dry. I hope this answers your question 😁👍🏻
Please could you demonstrate a typical firefly haircut on straight hair with a side parting, using horizontal graduation please, if possible, thank you.
When you did the sides and back you pulled everything down to the same guide and to the same elevation which creating a heavy weight line around the edge, right? Or do you slightly increase your elevation for every section you bring down? Basically, did you the same exact cut you did in the firefly video with the mannequin? Thanks!
What a fantastic question thank you yes there is a slight elevation on each section and I am travelling around the head at the same time Each section is pulled onto the previous section rather than the original section that is perpendicular to the hairline Hope that makes sense and answers your question any other questions don’t hesitate to ask 😁👍🏻
I have very curly hair. I m ok with a light maintenance cut. Please can you do a tutorial on this cut with very curly hair? Us curly haired clients are not really catered to - we feel like a lost cause😅
Yes good observation. however what I will mention is if the hair is short enough having one leg crossed over the other has little to no effect on the outcome of a haircut the main reason for not having the next frost is because it tends to elevate the shoulder and this creates imbalance In the shoulders I will have the biggest impact on haircuts “on” or past the shoulder best James
Hi sorry not really sure what this language is I am not able to read it unfortunately if you could put it into Google translate and repost it I would be happy to answer

Thank you very much yes horizontal graduation isn’t that popular generally speaking but is super useful as you described

I cant see in the back are you bringing the hair down to the previoustly cut section each time,so slowly moving up?

His, legs are a cross....in basic cuts legs strait not cross.
