I got my licenses back in 1985. This is how we cut a traditional shag back in the day. We used to go back in with a razor to get that shaggy look. I see so many cuts now that is really different then how we cut a shag. Great cut, technique and instruction.

Wondering how you determine how to decide where to start cutting the Mohawk section in relation to the back. I saw you angle to keep hair longer toward the back but still was confused as to what guide you were connecting to. Also once you started to cut the back on top, it I was not clear where you picked up the hair and whether you were over directing or what. Your black jacket make it hard to see this part as well. Very nice cut and thanks for showing it on you tube!

I prefer a little more density towards the back but i love this tutorial for the technique so good

Love the style; amazing cutting! However... I have neither that long neck, nor that perfectly shaped mannequin face. That always informs the overall length , for me. My hair is soft, and often characterized as thin, but as you've noted, the proper cut makes everything work perfectly. I live in a part of the country where they fall into a stupor trimming, glossing, and blowing out long straight hair. They seem to be stuck with a mannequin mentality. I don't mean to sound insensitive, and as teaching is the best way to keep fresh and current, I wish my salons were encouraged to expand their artistry with tutorials from someone with your acumen. Always so appreciative of your work. A real treat. L'm starting to prefer you to Netflix! Thank you- Thank you.

Back in the mid-nineties at the salon we did football shaped partings for a shag.--Did my own at home and everyone loved it!

I like Paul Watts method of instruction---easier to follow--simpler haircut to do.

@@lynx6124simpler, but not as true to a perfect shag...he doesn't remove the weight or bulk

Looks good but for me I’d like the length in the back shorter and more fringe texture.

Removing the bulk is the scary part. I’d probably look like one of The Bay City Rollers!!

Hi, I am a 19 year old guy who has just gotten a shag cut. I really like it so far, but am not sure how to get it into some of the extreme styles that I see in pictures of people like Andy gibb or john travolta. My hair color and texture is similar to the hair from your side part shag video that you made about a year ago. I cannot find a video showing the styling process anywhere. I would really appreciate the help, and thanks so much for your time! I wish that I could let you see some exact examples that I am talking about, but I don’t see an email in your description. Do you have one?

Sorry, this video isn't that great. Dark hair, dark studio, dark clothing doesn't make it easy to see. Not giving a not of actual instruction either. As a beginner, this video wasn't as helpful as I hoped it would be.
