I wore my hair like this in the '70's and loved it. Now, I can't find anyone who knows what I'm talking about. Your video is going with me next trip to the stylist! Thank you so much.
Good luck! I asked a stylist to watch the video and cut it exactly the same..she proceeded to just grab hair at random and cut..so upsetting that stylists refuse to follow step by step techniques

I love it how you're at the top of your profession, but you're still mentioning what you learned working with other professionals! That's why you're the best!
love it so so much!!! I've been saying "heavy on the crown and light at the bottom" and it never looks like what I'm thinking about. I guess I should be saying "skinny at the bottom." Plus, the crown is ALWAYS too long. I'm on a search for a stylist I can communicate with. I've met lots of really nice stylist and have paid plenty, but I just can't seem to get the results I'm after. Watching your tutorials gives me a better vocabulary to communicate my desired cut.
I’ve paid £100’s for a designer haircut many times from famous salons and never experienced such a thoughtful stylist executing the process. The test of a good style is if you don’t want to go home and stick your head under the tap and ask your mum/sister/friend to sort the bad bits with their kitchen scissors! Matt, you’re an inspiration for ALL stylists who need to lifelong learn as you do. I wish I could find a hairstylist I could trust here in the U.K. The common mistake of the stylists I’ve experienced is they don’t look at hair growth patterns and textures, the shape of the head including best features, select the appropriate tools for the job and think about how the weight and look of the overall finish before they slice in! They all need to watch your FSE videos. I wish I could cut my own hair!
I became a hairdresser because i have naturally curly and hair and you are right so many cutters have no idea how to cut curly hair, for men or woman. It was nice for me, i would get all the curly hair or perms for customers when i was a hairdresser. It is a no mistake cutting for sure, even if you do make a mistake it is rarely seen with curly hair ( speaking of when i cut my own of course.).. I have had this cut when i was younger, but the guy cut it a little differently. I love this look and am tempted to get this cut even now at at 59. And Paul Mitchell products are one of my old time favorites, them or Redken. I was always able to sell product to my customers if they wanted that salon finished look.
I love how you said you learned something from Sam and Andrew. Lots of time stylists dont like to say they learn from others. Kudos to you. We can always learn something new- and nice haircut!
This is bloody brilliant...so few know how to cut curly hair...have done hair for 45 yrs...still adore watching new techniques...and this one is 👌🏽 perfect...
Your free classes have been a blessing to me and has inspired me to live my dream. I make wigs and your cutting and coloring has helped me so much. Thank you.
Me encantooo!
This was such a detailed explanation of exactly what needs to be done to someone’s hair with texture like mine to achieve the look I’ve been desiring for ages. Whenever I ask the stylists I’ve been to in real life they’ve denied me, but I think it’s just because they don’t want to mess it up. Clearly it can be done as you just explained it and cut it perfectly, and you even explained how to tweak it to look less heavy, etc. I wish I could have you cut my hair. Even going in with the wide tooth comb - that’s the number one issue I have with most stylists. I will never understand why they choose to cut my hair with a fine tooth comb when that has NEVER worked for me once in my life. Why ? Just why. I may use this tutorial to cut my own hair from now on. You’re amazing for providing this to us for completely free. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this! It's exactly what I was looking for. I have curly hair and cut my own- this is the first time I've ventured beyond a basic trim and I'm SO happy with the results.
I LOVE this cut! It’s been decades since I’ve had a cut I love! I really appreciate the fact that you mention the need to cut lower because of shrinkage!!!!! Thank you so much for this video!!!!🤗🤗🤗
Para as brasileiras: fiz esse corte. Meu cabeleireiro foi cortando enquanto via o vídeo. Ficou impecável!! Gente, amei.
This is one of the most excellent hair cutting tutorials I've ever seen! Thank you for including so many details. I would personally choose a lighter fringe with a little more height on top and more of a taper down all around, but that's just personal preference. But after watching this I feel like I understand how to make those adjustments. Thank you!
I love this! I have coarse, wave/curly/multi-textured hair, and I want to show the send this video to the stylist with whom I have an appointment on Saturday so she knows EXACTLY what I want, but I hope that won’t offend her (?).
I just did this on myself, and Love it. If you have super long hair (like me) and want to keep the length... this is what I did (I’m no pro but it looks cool in my opinion) I sectioned, off 2 inches at the nape of my neck- in a straight across section horizontal across the back of my head (kind of below ear to below ear ) and put this section in a hair band. Followed the tutorial on the rest of my hair, then at the end when it came to blending the crown I took that low section out, and cut it to a long point at the back and blended it with the other layers in the same way - looks lush and is nipple length x
It took me over an hour but I followed your tutorial I cut my hair dry curls and I think it turned out amazing. Better than any haircut I had hands down so appreciated !👼🏽👼🏽👼🏽
I'm so proud of you! Cutting curly hair is not easy, but like so many on here, we have been forced to learn things we never wanted to learn. I'm lucky enough to have an amazing stylist who actually knows how to cut thick curly hair (and rocks her own fabulous curls), but I haven't seen her for six months now because of the pandemic, and my hair looks like it! I followed her lines the first two times, but messed up on trim #3. This tutorial gives me the information I need to get back on track. I learned how to do my husband's hair (and my cuts look better than what the stylist had been doing), so I guess I can earn to do my own. But the minute the pandemic is over, I'll be first in line for my stylist!
@@keilynduarte1945 I did mine with a lot of swearing about not having a three-way mirror! ;) But really, once you get your technique down, it's not *that* difficult. Get your fingers in the right place, try as best as you can to see in the mirror, and snip into it. Don't cut straight across, snip in vertically/at an angle/whatever you can manage, a little at a time. The good thing about curly hair is we don't need perfectly straight lines; our fluff can hide minor mistakes. I did mine about three weeks ago and I am madly in love with my hair now! I changed it up a bit (longer length and side part), and it worked just fine. This cut grows out well, too. I normally see my stylist every ten weeks, but I had so much fun doing this, I'm going to do it again in a couple weeks. I'd do yours if I could! :)
this is gorgeous! I have wavy/curly hair and I've been a hairdresser for 45 years. thank you for the inspiration! This curly shag is so soft & beautiful & the weight is perfectly placed, much nicer than the shags of the 70's. Wish you could cut my hair
This is exactly what my client asked for, so thanks for showing me a great approach! I'm still in school, and I don't feel confident with the last step of tease cutting. Any recommendations for other ways to achieve a similar effect with a more basic technique?
I tried this tonight and got a pretty good result! My fellow students and teachers were impressed, and my model was super happy. I sent them all to FSE :)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! This cut is beautiful. My daughter has naturally curly hair, this would look stunning on her. Going to share this with her, she's a new mom, this style would be super easy.
Great! I have wavy hair very much like this mannequin. I can see that the angle on the side and the angle on the back from the side are everything that make this look like an intentional wavy shag!!
Amazing work, fabulous instruction. As a stylist I cut my own due to my curls (same as block). At the salon, even the process of drying my hair is never understood as I don't want to 'tell' my hairdresser to keep hair damp and apply plenty of product. I tend to leave the salon with a lank frizz because they don't redampen after cutting and often do not attempt any product distribution and therefore basically leave my hair over dried on the ends and damp at the roots! Curly hair is an artform in itself and it has taken sometime to find the correct products for the results I like . I try to find salon websites that show their stylists so I can find a curly haired one but sadly in this area they have long straight or large tong curls in the main!
I’m a former stylist with naturally curly hair(yes, it’s flat ironed in my photo). Still, I love to see cutting tutorials on curly hair. I’m still learning even though I’m no longer in the salon. Well, friends and family are forever clients…😉 This is great because my already fine texture hair thinned severely after I got covid. So now I’m working with different hair and having to deal with all of the breakage that occurred. This shag would be a perfect style right now! Thank you!
Wow. Thanks so much! I wish everyone knew how to do this cut the way you do! Exactly what I used to have! Still wanting it but it's hard to come by these days! You are gifted!
YES!!! I have always loved a 5-5.5” blade. I’m a control freak, and I find longer shears offer less control and flexibility. Just a personal preference. So nice to see someone express a similar sentiment.
Clicked on the video thinking it would be just another hair stylist that *thinks* he knows how to cut curly hair, but now I’m SURPRISED man! Good job! Learned a lot, time to make some damage to my own hair
I just cut my hair and I love it❤❤❤ Im not a hairdresser but the instructions were so clear i just went for it. What a fantastic source of knowledge you are! Thank you so much!!
I wish you could cut my hair!! I need this cut and a hairstylist who understands the thinning in the crown and how to help it and also understands curly hair. You are a rare find. Edited to add: I love this cut!!
@@chloeanncollison6395 honest it was so long ago I don’t remember, I believe I just did the best I could and knew if I made mistake my curls would hide it lol I know it took me forever it seemed and I did little at a time but ended up loving it. Since I shaved it all just cause I’ve always wanted to and it was very freeing now my curls are about 8 months old 🤣 but if your nervous just get a professional to do it for you, good luck either way 💜

Thank you for this tutorial! I’ve been looking for an explanation of curly shag all over the internet before i try it on a client and you gave exactly what i wanted!
My boyfriend did this haircut on me! I got it a bit longer than the model. I never had such nice look!!!! My hair were never more bouncy, curly, messy in the best way hahah. So cool that you shared this tutorial. I love how I feel and look, crazy again!
❤️ thank you ❤️ I cut my own hair and your video has helped me a bunches ‼️ I gave up on salons a long time ago ‼️ I got so tired of paying out the a** for a stylist and then coming home to fix their mess 👍‼️‼️
Thank you so much for this! Like so many others on here, I'm having to cut my own hair, thanks to the current situation certain people put us in. I'm vain, but not enough to risk my life or the life of my fabulous stylist to look good! It's not like I'm going anywhere, anyway. But it's been six months since I've seen my stylist, and I need to shape things up again. After three self trims, I've lost the lines of my original cut, and needed expert guidance to get back to my roots. Shags are awesome for us curlies; I've been in love with them ever since I saw my first shag on Goldie Hawn on "Laugh In". (Yeah, I'm old. Ish.) However, the cut was then for straight hair only, like everything was for the first half of my life. Even now, I'm told that most styling schools still only teach cutting straight hair, and stylists have to intern with specialists after graduation to learn curly techniques. But thanks to the magic of the internet and the magic fingers of this incredible(!) stylist, I will now be able to trim my hair until it's safe to go back to my stylist. Thank you so much, and stay safe everyone!
Just started the curly girl routine and this cut is excellent Matt explains and demonstrates so well I was able to cut my own hair and I am so excited with the result. Thanks Matt.... this is a great cut and a perfect video.
I love how you made it specific for curly hairs. I have a thin curly hair and I always get shocked with the results! I just want a haircut that makes me pretty without the need to use hot air stylers. I'll give this haircut a try. Thank you
Bruh I just love your videos and how analytical u explain everything without being too much. U helped me a lot with my first steps in hairdressing. Thanks for everything.
Best haircut video for amateurs ever! Thanks for explaining the steps thoroughly. I totally got what you were saying, which is a first for me when it comes to haircut videos. You're the best!
You are a talented artist and a careful engineer. Beautiful demonstration and job. I have had a lot of not very good hair cuts, some of them very expensive. Most stylists don't understand how to cut curly hair.
I have been TRYING for 5 yrs now to get someone to cut my curls like that!! I am learning key terminology here; curly shag.. concave layers... what else? Too many stylists don't how to bring out your best curls in a cut.😢
hi stylist here, show them this video during the consultation or prior to the appointment and have them watch it so they cut you hair exactly how you want it! as stylist we love inspo photos why not an inspo video to show exactly how to achieve what you’re wanting! :)
@@alexissagravesWould this be taken ok by the stylist. I feel like it's the only way to show her what I want but I don't want to insult her and her training. She's the best stylist I've found in years but still isn't hitting the mark.
It’s always a horror for me when they bring out that fine tooth comb. Like why. Some people need less tension, not everyone’s hair can be cut with a fine tooth comb. I have always wondered why they think that it’s appropriate with someone who’s hair is like mine, similar to the mannequin, thick and curly.
I love this but I foresee the fringe getting flat and heavy as the day wears on. I will just cut into it or lift the area slightly more, depending on the texture and thickness. THANKS
Someone who knows how to cut curly hair! Excellent instruction. Thank you so much!! I have resorted to cutting my own hair. Am hoping I can retain and apply some of this instruction on my own hair. Slowly, I will experiment. It's a straight hair world, sigh. And cutting my hair dry at times is helpful too, as it lets me see where the curl hits and I work with it. Just subscribed!
This is my ultimate, ideal, dream hairstyle. Alas, I was born with straight, very frail hair and I don't know if my already damaged hair can take a perm. But when I eventually do perm it, I am going to cut it like this!
I watched a couple of your videos and another ladies video cutting curly hair like this and I really think I have a good understanding of it now. Great explanations and techniques!
This has got up be the best educational video that I’v seen . I just appreciate how he takes you step by step and explains it thoroughly . Thank you very much
I’ve used this tutorial on myself for about a year now. It’s great for cutting the front and sides, but the back is about impossible to do yourself. Still looks pretty good, though.
THIS IS 70/80s SHAG!! I had this cut for years! And loved it! Do they not teach this in cosmetology school anymore? Having a hard time telling my stylist how to do this. Shouldn’t she know already?
With wavy/curly hair types they are more likely to have hair growth patterns such as cows lick, widow's peak. With the fringe for example how would you go about that differently if someone had a strong cow's lick?
This is the best tutorial on my favorite haircut I've ever seen. Sadly it's too complex for me to do on myself. I have the exact same hair as this mannequin (in dry weather, not in humidity)... even the color and thickness, it's crazy. How would a hairstylist react if I try to ask them to follow this tutorial exactly? Would they be offended?? Is it rude? Will they feel like I am saying they don't know how to cut hair?
FrenchCanuck79 probably yes ._. but the truth is most hairstylists really don’t know what they are doing when it comes to curls 🤷🏻♀️ maybe ask a friend? Maybe someone who cuts their own hair, too?
This was the best video I have seen ! Very Explanatory !! I have curly hair and do cut my own .. because nobody has been able to do it like him Thank You so much !!!!
I will return to this same video tomorrow and try it myself. I’m tired of my hair looking lifeless and heavy whenever the stylist asks me if I want “layers.” Not everyone’s hair can be cut the same. I always end up unhappy with what they’ve done after a few months of growth because my hair gets too heavy on the top and too floofy at the bottom. I could definitely avoid that depression with a style like this though, there’s so much room for natural life in the hair.
Personally with my curly hair (mine is slightly more curly than the model) ive had success with hooded dryers because it isnt as direct as a blow dryer. so if you have room for one that may help avoid the akward conversation lol, i just take a pick comb and flip my head over and fluff it and the volume comes back just like with using a diffuser like the one you are using.
I love how you described it all. I have curly hair and Im getting older 54 and the hair is thinning a bit. I need to sit someone down and have them watch this and cut my hair for me. I may be able to do it on my own if someone can at least cut it on those odd angles you give. I want a shag so bad with my curly hair. Heat flashes made me cut it off short and now Im missing the length but not the weight and heat and I think this will lighten it up and let the air flow nicely from the heat. Thank you and I subscribed a while ago when I first viewed this but YT isn't giving me updates. Booo
OMG, thank you so much! yesterday I went to the salon to get this hairstyle (but I didn't know the name), the stylist do a bob style, and today I tried with your instruction, it took me hours but it looks so amazing!!! (not as good as a professional but very acceptable), really thank you so much for showing all with very careful instructions and tips!!!
Please tell me-where are you located? I have tried twice to get this haircut. First time, I described it-my mistake. Second time, I sent this video to the stylist in advance and told them what I really liked about it, and even though they watched it beforehand, they did it their own way. I ended up with way too much weight on the bottom and an indent in the middle. I had been cutting my own hair for decades, but I couldn’t do this one myself…
Another natural curly here , I never let anyone cut it so I keep it long. I trim myself can’t wait to try this 💜 u make it look easy thank you!!!! I’ll have some help so I don’t butcher myself just to be safe 😂
This is a genius curly haircut!! No one knows how to cut curly hair. I cut my own, and I just learned a ton from you! Brilliant job!!

@@bleuschat4386 please record n post a vid of the next time you do it!
It’s 3:20 AM and I Just finished the haircut and let me tell u .I never looked so good.Thank u for the great tutorial 😘
Ya wanna come over and do me next 👋
This is the best haircut tutorial I've seen on RUclips. Thank you!!! I've learned so many new tips.
this is gorgeous! I have wavy/curly hair and I've been a hairdresser for 45 years. thank you for the inspiration! This curly shag is so soft & beautiful & the weight is perfectly placed, much nicer than the shags of the 70's. Wish you could cut my hair

I never has seen so much dedication when cutting curly hair!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!. He is really gooooood!
I’ve always been confused my hair cutting and the way you explain it makes it easy for people who wanna learn! thank you
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Well, friends and family are forever clients…😉
This is great because my already fine texture hair thinned severely after I got covid.
I have curly hair, this is a great cut! The fact that you dried it before you finished the top was key. Nice job.
He's a genius. But you don't see many people with this style. I'd love this with a asymmetrical touch.
Hey! Finally I found somebody who understand my hair. I cutted it today and it looks beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you! Did this to myself tonight and I love it! Might be the most bitching hair cut I’ve ever given myself! 💗
what was the best way for you to do it to yourself? i want to but i don’t know how i’ll do the back x
@@chloeanncollison6395 honest it was so long ago I don’t remember, I believe I just did the best I could and knew if I made mistake my curls would hide it lol I know it took me forever it seemed and I did little at a time but ended up loving it. Since I shaved it all just cause I’ve always wanted to and it was very freeing now my curls are about 8 months old 🤣 but if your nervous just get a professional to do it for you, good luck either way 💜
@@chloeanncollison6395 use 2 mirrors one front one back I ty a mirror to my standing lamp( take shade off) and move it around,so I can see myself in the bathroom mirror
I've been wanting to have this cut for so long but no one understands what I'm explaining to them! I'm saving this video!
God! Somebody who understands curly hair! How magnificent!
Thank you! You are an excellent educator, and I love this cut. There's good technique here that can be applied even if not doing a shag per se.
The moisture in the curls alone is applaudable
Love this haircut, it's got a distinct shape. I 'm so happy to see this trending again. It's soft ,feminine and sexy. Thanks Matt!
Just started the curly girl routine and this cut is excellent
Matt explains and demonstrates so well I was able to cut my own hair and I am
so excited with the result.
Thank you so much, I have used your tutorial a number of times to cut my own hair and I’m always super happy with the result ❤️😊
You are a talented artist and a careful engineer. Beautiful demonstration and job. I have had a lot of not very good hair cuts, some of them very expensive. Most stylists don't understand how to cut curly hair.
I just cut my daughters hair following this tutorial. It turned out beautifully and she absolutely loves it! Thank you so much 🫶👏🏻
I have been TRYING for 5 yrs now to get someone to cut my curls like that!! I am learning key terminology here; curly shag.. concave layers... what else?
Too many stylists don't how to bring out your best curls in a cut.😢
I have found precious few (zero, actually) stylists that are good at cutting curly hair.
hi stylist here, show them this video during the consultation or prior to the appointment and have them watch it so they cut you hair exactly how you want it! as stylist we love inspo photos why not an inspo video to show exactly how to achieve what you’re wanting!
I cut my daughter's curly hair following your video and it came out perfect. She is ecstatic! Thank you for a clear and easy to follow video :)
I just followed your tutorial, I always wanted this haircut but any hairdresser knows how to make it. I really loved the result, thank you ✨
I love this but I foresee the fringe getting flat and heavy as the day wears on. I will just cut into it or lift the area slightly more, depending on the texture and thickness. THANKS
I have this haircut but with wavy hair and I've been so frustrated with my hair. This gave me some hope and tips on how to style this hair
Thanks!
I watched a couple of your videos and another ladies video cutting curly hair like this and I really think I have a good understanding of it now. Great explanations and techniques!
Wait I just did this on my own hair and I love it!
This has got up be the best educational video that I’v seen . I just appreciate how he takes you step by step and explains it thoroughly . Thank you very much
I’ve never seen a curly hair head in a hair cutting demo. Brilliant! Great cut and information. Thank you.
I’ve used this tutorial on myself for about a year now. It’s great for cutting the front and sides, but the back is about impossible to do yourself. Still looks pretty good, though.
I’d love to find someone who could do this cut!
Totally awesome. Wish you were here to do my curly, curly hair. I will try your technique myself.
Best haircut I've seen since I started my hairdressing journey 💜
Omg I love your explanation of every step. So straight to the point and nothing was too complicated. Beautiful turn out ❤
THIS IS 70/80s SHAG!!
@@maxi1968 I ended up doing it myself and it looks good. I just don't trust anyone with my hair anymore. Lol
That is amazing! Proud of you!
Quisiera que mi estilista aprendiera a hacer este corte. Queda bellísimo el corte, el volumen y la forma 😍
Excelente clase. Gracias ❤
My 16 year old self , a curly head who’s always loved “The Rachel”, is crying ♥️
I love this hair cut 💇♀️ I haven’t cut it since I was in cosmetology school .🥺😍
i would love to see this cut on someone with less curly hair. Love the cut, especially the back and fringe. thanks
Congratulations you are an Expert Artist in hair cutting, thanks for sharing your techniques.
Thank you! This is exactly the tutorial I have been looking for. Looks amazing!
Matt you’re THE BEST TEACHER❤
Another natural curly here , I never let anyone cut it so I keep it long. I trim myself can’t wait to try this 💜 u make it look easy thank you!!!! I’ll have some help so I don’t butcher myself just to be safe 😂
I got that haircut by the 80s. Do you have a video with straight hair? I love this haircut
