This is such an amazingly executed educational video. As a barber I see a lot of videos on youtube or even insta ( especially for a shag or mullet) that you can tell the stylist doesn't have a routine for cutting and just fumbled around and ended up with a resemblance of whatever cut it may be and thought "that kinda worked" then put up a how to video, where as its obvious you actually work in a salon and know how to properly do the haircut and have clean and confident sections and know exactly how the cut is gona turn out!! That really makes me happy its a one time watch and a competent stylist can easily now perform the cut, knowing the exact way to cut each section..really a proper educator and thats really refreshing/exciting to see. @@dumdum7749 hey that’s awesome! I hope you’re feeling better, I am all too familiar with that feeling & I know that sucks. I honestly just love bangs, I have had them on and off my whole life, and then when I found the best hair dresser I’ve ever had back in 2016 I trusted her to do the bangs, and she actually gave me a shag haircut with curtain bangs from what I told/described to her I wanted and it was awesome. I maintained that with her for years, then like 10 weeks after a cut I was like I need a bang trim I can’t see 😆- she was out of town and I was like well how hard is a bang trim it’s just what I have, but shorter - well a guy literally cut my bangs straight across, didn’t point cut and all of the hair I had framing my face was now a THICK A$$ bang. That was in 2019 and now my hair is finally manageable! I was so embarrassed to tell her I went to another guy! She softened them up and taught me how to do a trim (she was just short of an hour drive) so she knew I was committed to just seeing her. Then enter the pandemic - so now that I’m confident with the bang trim I really want to go for the full shag cut on myself. If you read that journey thanks LOL hair is a big deal to me. Have you colored your own hair?
i’m soooo excited to have found u! i’m a licensed cosmetologist but i haven’t cut any hair in years and this has helped out and definitely made me miss cutting hair which i never got real experience doing since i went into brows but this piqued my interest even if on myself ! thx so much 😊!
I love this!!! Totally gonna try this on myself but I may use a razor! I went to a lady who did this amazingly, and as a hairdresser, I kind of want to try to tackle it 👀 haha thank you!
Wow that’s beautiful I always love the long layered haircut and I love the curtain layer around the face that’s exactly what I wanted I wish you could cut my hair🥰💕
I’ve commented before on other videos of yours that I would love to see an entire video of your styling process of the blow out rather than fast forward through or show just random segments. One of the main reasons is, in this video, in particular, I am IN LOVE with how you styled this cut but you say to keep the round brush completely vertical and then in some parts of the video I see the brush angled (10:43) and at some parts even horizontal (11:34) (11:50) I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but my flips aren’t traveling back on the sides but rather forming more into one big tube like curl in the front. Maybe my hair is too long? Is this style doable on chest length hair? Maybe I need more layers? I don’t know. Would appreciate so much seeing how you, step by step, blow out this cut, though. In the meantime, any advice would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks for all you do.
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE this style! But, have found it virtually *IMPOSSIBLE* to get it at ANY salon I've gone to! Have spent a small fortune trying to get it (or anything even REMOTELY CLOSE!) Thank you so much for sharing your talent with everyone. And although I love your technique and style of teaching, I feel that too much was edited out of this video for me to feel confident enough to try this cut. I'm a little sketchy on details like... how far back is that upper Fringe section taken? And, how far back are the side sections taken? Nothing was covered concerning the actual "sectioning". Where do we stop when we get to the farther back back sides? Where exactly we begin the upper back first cut, that's on top of the crown? And lastly, how do we trim up the bottom length in the back? Lots of questions (after watching MULTIPLE times). I'd appreciate SO MUCH if you could answer these questions. I've felt so bad about my appearance for about 4 yrs now, bc I've had so many bad salon experiences in recent years... I'm just ready to get back to feeling like *ME* again... and THIS is the style that does that! Much appreciation... thanks.
I'm sure it would look amazing on you, not sure what your face shape is like but people are usually attracted to what would look good on them. "usually" :)
@@jakethompsonhair Wow! What an offer!!! If Charr doesn’t do it, can I?!!!! I live in Los Angeles but have friends in Orem I can visit! Or do you ever travel and do hair in the LA area? PLEASE lmk...it’d be such an honor to have you do my hair...REALLY!
I LOVE this style. Exactly what i want. Have qualms about finding a stylist who will cut this as expertly as you. Any suggestions about how to avoid a great disappointment?😊😊
Old school stylist here. Everything old is new again!! Old fashioned face framing. I believe Paul mcgregor created it for Jane Fonda ! To my knowledge it became popular because it was her that was the first well known person to have it , doesn’t mean someone else didn’t have it. And the term shag i think he coined because of the styles unkempt appearance. At the end of the day it’s just a layered cut. A good one but just layers. Great styles never go away !! Love the video !!
GR8 pointers for this do it yourself ! I know ,I know a stylist can do it better...after the pandemic👍 I wish I had a hundred of those heads to practice on every so often I'll buy something like a Barbie doll and practice on that. Those full heads are compelling though.. pricey so for now I'm going to stick with the mop heads and Barbie dolls 😄😄😄 The tip for that powder is fantastic I had some of that stuff I did not know how to "handle" it.
Thank you for being so thorough. I really appreciate the information. So many videos talking about how to get a curtain fringe/shag by people who are not professionals. Really??! The blind leading the blind with scissors?
Welp, I guess I’m cutting my hair tomorrow now that I understand how to get the angles and flips that actually look correct. Thanks for this great tutorial! x
This reminds me back in 80’s Farrah fawcett Kate Jackson, I always love wearing this , but nobody seems to know what I’m taking about , I live in little town they just call it feathered.. I show pics still can’t go off my old pic.. I tho maybe showing this video to them.. I have question can this style be for fine hair? Always had baby fine hair but lot of it as teen., now I’m older it getting more thin or finer more.. thanks and great job!
Hey Theresa, thank you! Ok so w/fine hair the only thing your stylist needs to do is keep the ends of your hair more blunt instead of textured or weight removed. With fine and or thinner hair it's wise to keep fuller towards the ends to give the illusion of thickness. So if you have them watch my video just have them replace a razor/texturizer with regular scissors the whole haircut. So YES this can be a great haircut for fine hair. Just have the stylist use there professionalism to best suit your hair needs. Good luck Theresa, thanks for reaching out.
@@jakethompsonhair hi Jake, thank you very much for ur reply.. I read like blunt edges are better.. I have some that want to do opposite and it makes my edges look very thin no volume.. can u suggest any haircut for fine hair? I don’t like Chin length bcz it make me look bigger in face, I keep my hair closer to shoulder length.. I love bangs it hides my big forehead lol( I feel my forehead big if have no bangs) but my cheeks are wider part...is it better curtain or blunt or what ur opinion? It little thinner bcz years ago I had perm went bad, hard to grow back.. is face framing good choice? Is there any stay away from ? Thanks 4 try help me..you welcome.....

Love it wish I could find some one who could do this exact shag. It’s super hard to find someone who will do this exact fringe cut ..always ends messed up
I totally dig what you’re doing so I liked and subscribed immediately and I almost NEVER subscribe to ANY channels! THANK YOU! This is the haircut of my dreams and I can never describe it right to my hair dresser. The shape is PHENOMINAL! It’s perfect! The curtain bangs are perfect, the sides are perfect, the top...EVERYTHING! I wish you could do my hair. I have to find out where you’re based. Till then, I’ll see if my hair dresser can do this. I have to ask, because I really don’t know and I don’t want to hurt my hairdresser’s feelings but would it be insulting if I had her watch this video before doing my hair?
Hey Mikamamma, 1st off thank you! 2nd, I'm glad you love how I design hair. 3rd, It really depends on her ego, if she has an ego I wouldn't show her if she is open to learning new things then yes. The reason I say this is cause some artist are egocentric, some are extremely open-minded.
@@jakethompsonhair ah yes...that makes sense. I think she’s open minded enough so I’ll give it a shot🤞Thank you for all of your great content (so glad I subscribed!) and for taking the time to reply. Truly appreciated!
Hey Maureen, yes I would. I would essentially leave anywhere from an 1" to 2" longer to compensate for the curl shrinking back up. Hope that help, good luck
Idk if this is meant as a 'diy shag' lol but I'm so tempted to try this, but I still want to keep most of my length. Can I do that? (i have hair down too my lumbar spine and it's super thick)
Hey Maria, it technically is not a diy technique, buuuuuut people have been doing on themselves and have great success. So proceed w/caution if you do. Since i'm a professional hairdresser of 26 years i'd say find a professional to do it for you, but if you can't find one for one reason or another try it on yourself. Good luck
Hola Jake, im from Spain, im sorry my english is terreble. I have got very long hair and this CUT hair you made on the video is what i want on my hair but no body understand me. Hope so ! you world be near my city or near my Home. Lol . Thank you very much! you did very good work. Where are you from? To far of Valencia Spain? Lol
Hey Angie, the 1st thing you need to ask for is some "curtain fringe", then from there you should ask for layers around the face that start at the longest length from you curtain fringe. If the stylist knows what they are doing they should be able to figure out that you are asking for a "shag shape". Good luck and thanks for checking out my video.
If I may. I find it that even though you and your stylist may speak the same language, you may not speak the same language. What has worked for me and others is to find several pictures of what you want, and a few of what you don't want in the same hairstyle. For example... I want a long shag. I don't want to lose my length in the back. I don't want that length back there to look stringy or pointy.... I want it straight and full. I don't want my fringe as short as the one in this video... Y wear my fringe parted, so that I can allow it to be longer, with the shortest part of it by the tip of my nose. Finally, I don't like the shortest layers to for a bowl in my head... I want them a bit longer, and piecy. I take the pictures that look exactly like what I want, and I say something like "what I like about this is the length of the fringe, the length in general. Where the shorter layers fall. How it is not too dense". Then I show pics I don't like of the same hairstyle and I say something like "I don't want the fringe like this. I don't like the bottom to end in an angle like this. I don't like how the layers are so short it looks like a mullet with a tail". I hope that helps
Never thought I was a shag girl but I messed up my own bangs and my stylist kinda turned my bob into a blondie-like shag. Im ok with it i might keep it a shag and grow it out that way. Showing these videos is good because it helps people who wanna cut their own hair not mess it up .

I'm so glad KCmakeovers! You are absolutely welcome
Gorgeous work! A true, classic shag. Thank you.
Thanks Joshua! Appreciate that so much!
Just used this technique on a client today and we both LOVED the end result! 🔥😍💇♀️ Thank you for your knowledge!!
Thanks for the tips and tricks to the style/cut. Great Job!
I love this!!! Totally gonna try this on myself but I may use a razor! I went to a lady who did this amazingly, and as a hairdresser, I kind of want to try to tackle it 👀 haha thank you!
Hey Cait, 1st off that is awesome, tackle away! 2nd, thanks for the love!
Jake thx u so amazin' u share ur knowledge without hide any point every detail u show it keep gud work pal thx a million
I love 😍 how you explain how to do this so that it's easy to understand.
I wish I saw the video before cutting my hair! You explained it so well💯
Wow that’s beautiful I always love the long layered haircut and I love the curtain layer around the face that’s exactly what I wanted I wish you could cut my hair🥰💕
I wish he would use real people for these. I’m sure there’d be plenty of willing volunteers
Reminds me of Valerie Bertinelli' s hair,
I have always loved her hair !
Now I want the cut !
The problem for me is finding someone who could cut my hair with a hand like yours !
Oh wow is me !
WOW! YOU ARE AN AWESOME HAIR STYLIST! Where is your salon???
Love this!!!!!!!! Cant wait to do my first shag hair tomorrow!! Thank you
The haircut looks fantastic indeed ! I love it - ty !!!
Glad you like it Helen! Thanks!
I dont know where you are, but if you ever come to Las Vegas, I need you in my life. Please keep me posted. 😘
This is just Fab!!!!
Exactly how I want my next haircut 👍
Hey Peaceatlast, that is just rad! Good luck when you do it!
So helpful and informative! I’ve tried finding good guides on this hair style before and I’m happy to say I finally have now thanks to you!
You're so welcome x o x o Nic Wit!
That is beautiful and I am going to let my hair get longer so I can have it done.Great video.Thanks.
Love the haircut! You are the Best!!
Much appreciation... thanks.
I need this haircut for my nieces wedding in June!!
I would just love to have that haircut .Thankyou
I'm sure it would look amazing on you, not sure what your face shape is like but people are usually attracted to what would look good on them. "usually" :)
Me toooooo! I already basically have one but I need a professional re touch
I would love to have this cut!
Hey Charr, If you are ever in SLC UT, let me know I'ld love to cut it & film it for youtube. (if you are interested)?
@@jakethompsonhair Wow! What an offer!!! If Charr doesn’t do it, can I?!!!!
I live in Los Angeles but have friends in Orem I can visit! Or do you ever travel and do hair in the LA area? PLEASE lmk...it’d be such an honor to have you do my hair...REALLY!
I LOVE this style. Exactly what i want. Have qualms about finding a stylist who will cut this as expertly as you. Any suggestions about how to avoid a great disappointment?😊😊
That is so absolutely adorable! You are AMAZING! I WANT that haircut..... Thank you for inspiring me to get a new funky look :) :)
You are so welcome Karen! I hope it went absolutely fantastic!
I want to learn more sir..love watching all hairdresser cz also this my fashion sir...
GR8 pointers for this do it yourself ! I know ,I know a stylist can do it better...after the pandemic👍
I wish I had a hundred of those heads to practice on every so often I'll buy something like a Barbie doll and practice on that. Those full heads are compelling though.. pricey so for now I'm going to stick with the mop heads and Barbie dolls 😄😄😄
The tip for that powder is fantastic I had some of that stuff I did not know how to "handle" it.
Thanks for this great tutorial! x
Glad I could help Lady Eryn Galloway! 💛
First class cut indeed .Thankyou
I truly appreciate that Kat! You are very welcome
Such a beautiful hairstyle
I truly appreciate that babygirl 99!
You thank you ... amazing work ever ..
My regards from KSA
My favorite hairstyle! Fantastic video !
Wow this is the haircut that Ive aleays wanted, but never got it at the salon
Hey Mia, sorry miscommunication can be a hard thing to overcome when trying to communicate what you want. You can try pictures or screenshot images from this video. Good luck Mia.
You are the best !!! I enjoy watching your videos 😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much Amy!! Glad your enjoying them!
Love it wish I could find some one who could do this exact shag. It’s super hard to find someone who will do this exact fringe cut ..always ends messed up
Thank you for such an amazing tutorial. I just shagged my hair 🥰 do you have a Facebook page to post pictures of DYI haircuts from your videos?
😍😍😍 Love It!! My favorite hair style magnificent execute!! 🔥
Hey Lucia, 1st, thank you so much!! 2nd, it's one of my favorites as well!
Would you change much if you were doing this style on naturally curly hair?
Hey Maureen, yes I would. I would essentially leave anywhere from an 1" to 2" longer to compensate for the curl shrinking back up. Hope that help, good luck
I love this hair style.
I know I can’t cut my hair like that I wish I could get it cut that way it’s beautiful you did an excellent job🥰
Love this haircut!!
Thank you Geri, me too!
Good luck
im cutting my own hair with your instructions thank you youre amazing
Hola Jake, im from Spain, im sorry my english is terreble. I have got very long hair and this CUT hair you made on the video is what i want on my hair but no body understand me. Hope so ! you world be near my city or near my Home. Lol . Thank you very much! you did very good work. Where are you from? To far of Valencia Spain? Lol
Best hairstylist ever 🖤
You are a hair cutting scientist. Who knew that was a thing. Cool.
Wish I could find someone in my area who can cut like this!
Looking to get a cut like this with medium length hair. What is the correct why to ask my hairdresser for this (beside just asking for a shag)?
@@veronicacornavaca9613 THIS DOES HELP THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!
Never thought I was a shag girl but I messed up my own bangs and my stylist kinda turned my bob into a blondie-like shag. Im ok with it i might keep it a shag and grow it out that way.
Showing these videos is good because it helps people who wanna cut their own hair not mess it up .
That’s gorgeous!!
Much love Susan, thanks so much!
