Tohru Honda is my favorite and I don't consider her as a bland character. She felt real to me growing up and is a character I relate with the most. I know how it is to be the most empathetic person in my circle of friends and family. Sometimes I feel I care for others more than I care for myself. Just like me, Tohru had her own childhood trauma behind her behaviors and perspective in life. And like most people, Tohru likes to feel she belongs whether it's with her mother, her friends, or the Sohma family. Although I saw the people in my circle everyday it took years for me to realize how important I was in their lives. So before I felt my own sense of belonging into adulthood, my connection with Tohru convinced my adolescent self that I may not be so different and alone after all.

I love Tohru Honda so much. I know some people out there think she's a pretty bland protagonist, ok that's their opinion I guess. But honestly she was a role model for me as a kid and shaped who I wanted to be as a person. ♥️🍙

I honestly can imagine girls growing up felt like Tohru was who they hope to be for sure. She is such a inspirational figure for sure and I feel like you legit just quoted Emerichu but the two of you are completely not alone I'm sure. I think the folks that think she's bland is more since it takes a long while to see her have as much damage as others, almost as if she's already done her healing while everyone else around her has not yet.

@@westsideotaku1555 i have to disagree with you there. from the beginning we see that she is hurting, that she is forcing these dark feelings down because she feels she's not privileged enough to feel them. she doesn't want to so she pushes them away and smiles so no one else sees them. and it's through helping her friends and the sohmas that she is able to start looking at those feelings, thinking those thoughts, even though she isn't ready to fully process them.
she is only able to fully process after kyo is fully able to listen, after she fully trusts him to understand what she means.
im rambling now, but my point is that tohru is only boring if you take her smiles at face value instead of trying to get in her headspace and understand her.

Fruits Basket literally transformed me from an internal to external person.
I often never thought about how other people's lives could be drastically different form me when I was in middle school.
Like obv ophrans and extremely poor people were different from me. But it made me see even a small kindness can mean so much to people you might view as mean or cold or angry. It doesn't cost anyone anything to just be kind, and some people are not in a place to be that way so if you can you should.

Well for whatever it is worth... Fruits Basket has left an everlasting impression on me. From its inception in 2001 to its reboot in 2019; it remains nostalgic to me. And after 20 years you finally found a way to break the Soma curse. Well Done FUNImation, Studio DEEN, and TMS Entertainment. Your show gave us inspiration in times when they were rough-- STILL ROUGH. It gave us joy in our times of sorrow even amidst a global pandemic still claiming lives. And the whole romance genre of the series put me at peace in times of uncertainty. I have NO regrets of ever watching the show... Thank You...

You made me cry! I have watched this series, then again rewatched so many times. The last episode brings tears to everyone's eyes not because of sadness, but because of nostalgia and the fact that we will not get any more episodes. I mean, Fruba is a legend! As you said, there are so many anime that have made me cry like Anohana, Plastic Memories, Clannad, Violet Evergarden, YLIA, etc but Fruba was the mixed up version of all of these. I would say that no other anime can evoke so many emotions like Fruba.

When I was collecting DVD's from Funimation they gave a demo DVD either with my Yu Yu Hakusho or DBZ order of Fruits Basket and it was all over for me. I loved it from the first episode and kept collectioning it when it officially got released. My mother died back in 2009 and when Momiji gave that speech to Tohru during the first year of the anniversary of her mother's death and it got me good. I then went on to collect the manga when I found out manga existed and Fruits Basket became my first manga collection I completed. I own the original series, origianal English mnaga volumes from Tokoyo Pop, The collector editions from Yen, the current seasons as they came out, etc..
It's a digital mini arc called the Three Musketeers featuring Hatori, Shigure, and Ayame. Then a Sequel called Fruits Basket Another that is 3 volumes , but the original cast are only mentioned and not shown nonetheless I still enjoyed it.

I liked the show but I found some of its lessons very dangerous.
I wish Tohru would have matured, developed some kind of emotional barriers. Everyone says that if she continues taking everything upon herself like that she will get hurt. That she's allowed this and this.
But she doesn't change, she keeps being abused (sorry, but being constantly shouted at by Kyô IS verbal abuse) and thinks she deserves it and keeps on constantly apologizing. The simple fact that she really takes care of everything in the house on top of being the emotional support for everyone irks me, because it's very dangerous to be that selfless, and so many people IRL get trapped in abusive relationships because of how they think they deserve it in some ways, because they haven't tried hard enough; the "dumbest traveller" tale really just is your next-door beaten wife. In a way the show reminded me of The Idiot by Dostoyevsky and it doesn't end well.
I wish for instance, that instead of following Kyô in his life, again being submissive, sacrificing her friendships and her own future as an individual, he would have been the one following HER dreams; I understand that it's not ideal considering his own freedom was also a big topic in the show, but it would have been a nice twist to the whole "protect and support Tohru" thing. To allow her to develop her own agency and desires, and show that it's also ok for her to expect things from others. More meaningful acts and less peep talks.
I also didn't like that safe-blame was often confused with taking responsibility or courage.
Especially in the case of the tiger, Haru says reading the teacher's letter who is basically victim-blaming the kid "What a load of crap" and I was like "ah finally someone saying it", but then Yuki kind of goes against this by saying to Kisa that she needs to be brave and basically toughen up. Sure, you're the only one who can get past your trauma at some point but before that happens, you first need to get out of the toxic situation. Enduring it is NOT overcoming trauma.
Not to mention that after that, we see that Kisa also never gets out of her self-blaming patterns.
    (Haru best boi)

I agree with many of your points but Fruits Basket IS a shoujo. Shoujo manga isn't "bland" or "Flowery" or whatever, it can have drama and heavy topics. Shoujo is just the demographic, in this case, the demographic is teenage/younger girls (anyone can watch it though). Many people downplay Shoujo because of toxic masculinity or because of lack of action like shounen but shoujo is actually a great demographic full of amazing stories like Fruits Basket.

    • @westsideotaku1555
      @westsideotaku1555  3 года назад +1

Agreed. My experience of shojo's has a romance at the center of the story that's pretty clear and for front, and I didn't feel like that was the case for this story at all which is one of the things I respect about it.

This video couldn’t have illustrated this complex narrative better. “Fruits Basket” is a tale. A tale that entails the sheer intricacies that reside within an individual's sentiment and choices that inquire, “What can I do to grow? Move forward?” It conveys the stories of characters that sought light, which was later embodied by one of the most precious protagonists through my perspective, Tohru. FRUITS BASKET allows its audience to comprehend strains and the gradual progression of not forgetting, but acknowledging what has occurred. It is a work of art that baffles rationale and portrays the lovely essence of inexplicable love.

Wow, your final line got me to sob.
Fruits Basket is honestly not my fav shoujo, but is one I remember the most. It also may have influenced me more than I realized after finally watching its completion 13 years later.
Tohru's rice ball and plum metaphor depicts how we don't realize who we really are until we connect with other people and its message is perfectly intertwined throughout the series. Some people like Akito want to say you're rotten inside and deserve to stay that way while others like Tohru just see you and accept you for who you are deep down. Tohru tries to get to know you and all aspects of you.
The characterization is what I loved most about this series. We got to know and connect with all the characters' faults and traumas, even Akito's.
This anime has an art and music composition more expressive than the manga. It heightens the emotion the manga couldn't portray enough.
While the anime couldn't show every funny and wholesome moment of the original story, it did knock it out of the park in conveying the principal moments, characterization, and themes that inspired many of its readers.
I'm so happy that this story got to shine again with a new audience and new generation. I hope it will continue to connect with people and help them move forward from their own traumas in life.

Beautiful thoughts Stephy. In terms of the anime production, they really did flush out the emotions/moods of scenes so well which was so important for a show that's really all about FEELINGS! I'm glad that last line hit you cuz I was worried it'd be too cheesy for some or they wouldn't get it (which is still probs gonna happen haha). Gonna miss this show dearly.

I have been OBSESSED with Fruits Basket since I was a kid, and I never really understood why until the remake came out. I grew up in a family full of emotional abuse, trauma, and mental health disorders. This series was like watching a weird comedic version of my life, and it subconsciously gave me hope that I can move forward past these things and change for the better. I still have a long way to go when it comes to coping and becoming my own person, but as Yuki said, “It's not that I've suddenly become stronger or that something has changed. I'm still shaking. But... We don't have to let those fears stop us. What's most important is that we try to rise above our weakness.”
To whomever may read this, may you rise above and push forward. Change is on its way, all you need to do is embrace it. I believe in you :)
“You're trying to find it. You're probably trying to find- the reason that you live- all by yourself. Because...because, in reality, there aren't any people who are born with reasons to live. I think that...that everyone has to find their reason to live. A reason to live. A reason to say that it's okay to be here. A reason for being. Everyone must find out and then decide. Maybe in a dream, or in a job, or in a person. "The reason" you find might be unclear, uncertain, and unstable. Even though you may lose it, I want to have a reason for as long as I live. I also want one. And then, if it's possible, I want to find it in somebody's heart. I want to be able to live for someone. I hope that someday, someone would tell me, 'You can think of it that way.' At times I want to give up, but I try my best. That's why...that's why it's okay, for sure, to be shameless. Because if you lead a bold life, someday you might meet someone with whom you'll want to eat takoyaki together.”

I first discovered Fruits Basket eight years ago right as my grandfather died and my family moved to a new place. Now I’m a young adult who is going to finish school this year and has to figure out what I’ll do with my life afterwards.
Fruits Basket is such a raw, beautiful story that handles such hard topics so well. I love it for many reasons, but the most important one is this. It shows that sometimes, all you need to help people out of a bad situation, is just show them that you care about them. That you accept them for who they are, and that you’re there for them.
If I ever meet someone who has or is going through something like the Somas had to go through, I hope that I can help them like Tohru did. I think the world would be a much better place if we had more Tohrus in it.
Thank you Fruits Basket. Thank you to the original mangaka. Thank you to the team that made the anime. Thank you.

I've said this before, but I don't think there will ever be an anime quite like Fruits Basket. I've watched other anime that are labeled as shoujo, and while they have been very enjoyable and fun, most of them haven't stuck with me emotionally like Fruits Basket has. Some have come close, like Kamisama Kiss, but even those few shoujos can't hold a candle to Fruits Basket. I dare say Fruits Basket has even outdone a lot of shonen anime I've seen.
    But that's just my opinion.

For me Furuba was a turning point of my life. I've read it when it was being published (so many years ago) and I was a teenager.
You dont know how many phrases of this masterpiece helped me along the way. When I felt sad, when I was unsure.... I just needed to re-read the manga to feel myself better (Shigure's analogy about washing the clothes you have near first as a way to confront your life problems... 100% gold)
About favourite characters... among the 3 I would say Tohru. I love Kyo and Yuki (to the point that a part of my nickname comes from them Kyu-> KYo+YUki) but there's not other character in all the manga/anime I know like her. We all need someone like Tohru in our lives.
Among the zodiac Momiji hands down. He's the most mature, with one of the cruelest past, and he keeps going on. You talk about Yuki, but Momiji never lost his smile. He was rejected, abandoned, left alone (x2), and he kept smiling. The way he deals with Akito (before and after THAT moment), his feelings for Tohru, towards Kyo (in the manga it's even better because the focus more on how all despise the cat, and even then Momiji wants Kyo to no give up) is inspiring.

God. The way you put it all made it hit so hard. I've loved Fruits Basket since I was in middle school 13-14 years ago. When I was introduced to it by my friends. I'll never truly leave these characters behind. Not when they are such an important part of the person I've become today. Of the person I still aspire to be. There's never been another series, in any type of media, where I've come out the other side feeling like I was a better person for experiencing it. And, so long as I was willing to try, that there was so much more room for me to grow.

loved this video, but one little thing! Fruits Basket IS a shoujo, and that's not a bad thing. Shoujo is just a demographic, that demographic being teen girls. and whether you mean it this way or not, when you say "Fruits Basket isn't a shoujo" that's basically saying that it being a shoujo is a bad thing, that shoujo isn't just as worthy of a demographic as, say, shounen, or seinen. i'm sure you didn't mean it that way at all, but yes Fruits Basket is a shoujo, even if you had a shounen that got really deep, i'm sure you wouldn't say it wasn't a shounen lol

I said the same thing about My Hero Academia for it's first 2 season where it didn't feel like a Shonen to me. Sometimes I come across things that I will absolutely in strictly a technical sense call them what they are, but just express how it feels like something else entirely "to me".

The only thing I disagree with is that Fruits Basket is very much a shoujo and part of its greatness is also tied to that. Despite shoujo's usual bad rep of being the same old cliche romance retold a billion times, I feel like most people miss what makes the genre (if one could call a demographic a "genre") special: the way emotions, conflict and relationships are written. Another shoujo that always makes me feel strong emotions is Nana and I can't help but think that shoujo has this very special way of toying with my feelings lmaoo

Even in the show everyone says at least once how Thoru is nothing really special, but she is somewehre around Jesus' second coming domminating with kindness. I felt Akito's character was a bit inconsistent, and the real antagonistic force was the curse/legacy, which was mirrored with social segregation on Thoru's backstory side.
I agree the strength of the show was the therapeutic nature akin with Mob Psycho 100, where inatead of the anguish and struggle of the characters the focus is on the grown up resolution.

I was first introduced to this series with the original as a child by a friend. Now as an adult I've finally seen the remake, or glow up and animated version of the manga. I have to say I see this in a completely different way. Fruits basket was the first manga I've ever read and I was super young when I read it. There was parts I didn't understand fully but I felt. The scene where kyo's dad holds him up in the air and says "From now on, you'll have to breathe the air of higher places." I grew up with a single parent household and reading that made something click in my brain. A deep feeling of understanding of my mom and why she worked so hard for my brother and I. This manga has shaped me as a person and my understanding of love. It taught me that love is complex but beautiful. It comes in all shapes and sizes. All colors and ways. It taught me that change is ok. Change is natural and scary. But good. Even when you have bad change. Even if you lose something or someone you love, even when it feels like there is no hope and that nothing will get better. Even in our darkest moments its ok. You'll be ok. It taught me that everything ends eventually. And that's such a scary thought but that's what makes it beautiful. If everything was forever then we wouldn't understand how beautiful and precious life is. We wouldn't understand the space and magnitude that the people we love hold in our hearts and mind. I have a space on my shelf of this story, the whole collection, and it'll remain there until it gets passed on. I hope everyone gets a chance to read this manga and learn the lesson of life and love and changing that it holds.

It's interesting to hear a review of Fruits Basket and all, but this video itself is very beautifully done. It almost feels like an anime scene itself and is actually more interesting than a plain review. Based off of this alone, I will probably watch the show, just because this painted a very vivid picture and made me interested. Great video.

Thank you so much...that means a lot :') I'd like to approach reviews like this in the future where there is a core theme to go over rather than simply talking about what's good and bad about the thing. Makes more of a impact.

Fruits Basket was the first anime I've seen back in like 2010, haven't really watched outside 2 or 3 episodes, wasn't really into anime back then but now I'm interested in giving it a chance

When I was growing up, I was the “rice ball” too. I was the girl who was left out because people thought I was weird. As I grew older, it manifested into me constantly trying to be nice to anyone and everyone to hopefully make people happy. My friend group has told me so many times before, “you’re so sweet and nice” or sometimes “you’re too nice!” (when I let this girl run off with my phone because i didn’t want to be mean and confront her.) I’m happy that I can make others happy, but the part about always feeling selfish is true. You never feel like you can go back. The kindness feels fake even if it isn’t anymore. I relate to Tohru so much that as I was watching the anime, I was learning all these important things along with her. What hit me the hardest is when Kyo said “It’s okay to be selfish sometimes.” Tohru and me were quite literally the same person. I’m rewatching the anime right now and I really recommend doing this. There are a lot of things I missed the first time!

Fruits basket was therapeutic for me
It taught me the most important lessons of my life
    To be kind
    To be grateful
Stop complaining and strive to change myself
I don't want to sound cringey
    But...
    Fruits Basket kinda saved me.
There are a lot of things I have done for which I won't be able to forgive myself. The deeply engraved guilt haunts me, even today.
Fruits Basket was a warm hug... A shoulder where I could keep my head and cry
A voice that told me... It's okay, Daijobudayo
    Thank you Fruits Basket
    Thank you so much

Hands down the most impactful work of fiction I ever read growing up, it still gets me to this day. I’ve never found another quite like it ❤️
