    Natsuki Takaya hated the old Fruits Basket anime was because the characterization, the character's appearance, the mannerism, tone (it's actually a serious manga and it does have good comedic timing), Akito's true gender, and the main plot points that Takaya did tried to point out before the manga ended, but Studio Deen didn't listen to her.

      BeThomsen for one thing, it’s all over the place, especially re. There’re so many characters who are made to look important but aren’t actually. I can’t begin to count the number of times where I thought to myself during a fight: “I have no idea who any of these are, or why I’m supposed to care.” Also, the clowns were apparently behind everything, but are barely mentioned again. To be fair, I haven’t touched the series for at least a year, but I know there’s a reason I stopped keeping up with it. There’s too much going on, with too many people, and not enough time devoted to making sure they stick with us. FMA did that superbly imo, with a fairly large cast of supporting characters who were memorable in their own ways. When watching it, I never once asked myself things like “Wait, who’s this Marco guy again” or “When are they gonna talk again about the fact that this Father guy controls everything”

    • @ADTillion
      @ADTillion 5 лет назад +3

      Urikuki Agreed, but, you have to see the other side too. Why would they not invest into a newer IP instead? It says something about society when the biggest trend is to revive old concepts and characters that are GUARANTEED to get fans to watch and spend. It’s kind of a safe bet, versus nurturing new content. Hollywood actually has a set model to use and a timeline to remake old concepts, because they know that audiences will consume the same thing yet again once their minds become nostalgic.
      It’s business as usual, but whether it is “artistic integrity” is something that’s up to your interpretation.
      Again, I love it when they remake good stories in ways that surpass the original (even though there are cases where the original is better) but WHY they do it, should be evaluated, especially if one is hoping to go into the entertainment industry in order to make “unique” content.

    • @Medachod

      Medachod that has to do with the newer adaptation matching the tone of the manga. The manga itself definitely has the comic relief that is emphasized in the first anime adaptation. However, the manga definitely a tone much somber to what is seen in the first anime.
      I have nothing harsh against the first adaptation. It captures the lighter moments, which had in turn captured it's audience, in an a way that was perfect for an anime that didn't keep necessarily keep true to the manga.

      I’ve read the manga too and I absolutely loved it. The best manga I’ve ever read. But when I watched the new adaptation, I did get a little bummed out about there not being some hilarious parts that were in the original anime. Like when Hana and uo visit their house for the first time oh my god! So funny!! And i know that that part wasn’t in the manga but it just made the anime so funny. But getting further into the episodes, I’m really enjoying it and getting back into the manga mindset. And I’m so excited to watch it through to the end! 🙂

      XxAbraxasmeadowxX this past Tuesday I got to watch the first three episodes of the first adaptation during Anime Night at the Alamo Drafthouse. I'm happy it was only three episodes. Especially because it further cemented my thoughts on how garbage the first adaptation was.
      I'm a tiny bit understanding to why you were bummed out. You grew to enjoy it and the slapstick comedy, that had been purposely filled in to draw more of an audience, and that I happen to not be a huge fan of the way my boyfriend is.
      The comedy is still there in this new adaptation, however, it just isn't in your face most of the time. I think this is great because it is now grounded with the other moods happening throughout the story.
      Before I start to rant, I hope you enjoy this new version that is staying closer to the manga.

      @@theVOCALOI That's garbage. The point of an anime is you're seeing the manga come to life. If it deviates from the original style, that's really dumb. I love Fruits Basket, but the creator sounds very mean. The only thing I agree with them on is that it was disrespectful they made the original anime mostly comical, which is rewriting the material. But otherwise, nothing else was wrong with it.

    • @theVOCALOI
      @theVOCALOI 5 лет назад +22

      Ok, then you're just not respecting her wishes then. The creator was treated horribly from the 2001 anime, the director disrespected what she wanted them to do and went with what he wanted himself and made the mess that is the original anime. She wants nothing to do with it anymore and if that means telling them to do a bit of a different style then so be it. She isn't mean at all.It's HER creation, SHE's the executive producer. It took us this long to get a reboot because she has trust issues due to studio deen. And if she wants it this way so be it. What you said is just garbage.

    I remember reading/hearing somewhere that part of the reason why Natsuki Takaya (the mangaka) didn't like the original series is because the director wanted to turn the series into a full-on comedy (examples being a good chunk of episode 6, the Yuki Fan Club dance, ect.). Additionally, because the director wanted to make the series more comedic, there was a lot of character/story/relationship development that got removed or changed. It ranged from small things being removed like: Momiji being half German and talking in German a lot; to bigger things being changed and removed like: the hat or the valentines day/white day episode where not only was Kagura's reason for coming over different (as well as Kyo's reason for why he eventually gave in to her demands), but major character development was removed for both Kyo and Shigure. I'm actually really excited to see those episodes in the 2019 series and seeing the reaction of the people who only ever saw the original.

Well I`m kinda disappointed that the Opening song and the Ending is not the same but to recover that I just watch the same episode from the old one.

    you definitely need to read the manga to understand the true differences between the old and new anime. They start of quite similar, but the original anime derailed from the plot of the manga quite quickly. so be prepared to start seeing different scenes in the anime which either seem arranged differently to the old anime or even completely brand new.
    In the original manga you actually get to see all of the 13 zodiac curses, and Kyo's "cure" isn't nearly as spontaneous and... oddly sequenced as in the original anime.

    • @imani7979
      @imani7979 5 лет назад

    Something that has been great about watching the new show is all the reactions of people who have no previous experience with the material. I, got to watch the anime as a kid, but never read the manga. It’s been so much fun seeing all the different stuff that hasn’t been animated before, or has been told in a slightly different way which I really enjoy. I feel like the show is getting so much love and attention and it’s really really good. I hope that at some point you are able to do a reaction video to how you feel the series is going after it’s done airing in the next few months.

    Thank you for this review. My whole life, I actually never had much respect for anime, finding the expressions to be over done and silly. So I never watched any anime series, expecting them to be all the same. But my niece recommended Fruits Basket to me and for some reason, I decided to indulge her. I started with the 2001 version and the intro and outro songs had me latched. They were sweet, simple but also deep and melancholic. Then I discovered the new version and I was completely caught up! The characterizations, the music and the art - all wow! This my very first anime series I've ever watched (an re-watched) and it took me 50 years to get here. Now I'm in love with this story about teenagers, trauma, the compelling, unshakeable bond with "god" and the realization that all of us carry our own curse, which we have to work through our whole life.

    Three episodes into the spring season, I will admit that Fruits Basket has been my favorite so far. While I wasn’t as big of a fan of the original as Arkada, it was an alright show...but I REALLY love the creative direction they are taking with the new adaptation. It’s actually an inspiring anime to watch because I love the relationship dynamics between all of them and how they all pick each other up...even though from a personality standpoint, they couldn’t be more polar opposites.
    One of my favorite parts came in episode three when Tohru said that everyone has their own form of kindness and even though everyone rags on Kyou, she sees the good in him even when no one else does.
    I think if this anime is successful, I believe other anime studios will have faith in the source material to sell the anime. For the longest time, anime has been used to sell the manga/LN, but in this particular instance, the opposite is happening. I really hope this becomes a new trend because I love anime more than manga as well and I get tired of incomplete anime stories (like Spice + Wolf).

The manga is REALLY good, but I only know that because the anime inspired me to go personally buy it, special edition, from Barnes and Nobles, when the show ended. I don’t read a lot of manga. Fruits Basket is the only one I’ve ever purchased, and I don’t regret it at all! But this new adaptation feels very true to the original, just because the dub voices - which I didn’t realize were original until you pointed it out - they sounded so used to their role, so comfortable in it, to me, and Now I appreciate the work the old cast is putting back into it now. Can’t wait to see the actual end animated!!

    The reason they adapted it was because it was nothing like the manga. So they wanted to keep this version true to the source. It’s also the reason why the author didn’t really like the old anime adaptation. She couldn’t really help out to much because she became very sick and unable to draw it so it was left up to other people.

    If you've never read the manga, prepare to be floored! The original story takes some crazy turns and has some specific details that I can tell from the first episode are finally going to get addressed. The story itself is actually very complex and gets really dark, which was totally glossed over in the original adaptation. I dont have a direct translation, but from what I gathered was that the mangaka had very little control over the first anime and has gone on record multiple times expressing how much she HATED it and that she desperately wanted to remake it. I don't blame her. The casting was terrible and the story was just a wash of the original. They completely ignored a major plot line (as well as several smaller ones) for the sake of shortening the series. I am so glad that it is finally getting the reboot it deserves and I am excited to see your reaction to this season since you have no idea what is coming.

My family who didn't understand my "japanimation /comic book craze" .Where now wanting to know when the next book was coming out and made me happy to share what I love with them.this is a classic among all man ga and anime.yes ,the original anime is ruff and less serious then the man ga.
