Fun fact, the "Kappa steals organ from human anuses" is actually a real part of Japanese folklore. That shit's real.
FlubbedPig incredible
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They actually had that in Gegege No Kitaro in some episode as well.
Thatxwe call youkai
While the rest of the world was content with werewolves, vampires and fairies, the japanese just had to come up with duck-frog men who live in ponds and steal things from your ass. Lol.
The eating the soul of humans through their anus is the actual folklore of the Kappa though, same with them eating cucumbers and liking sumo wrestling.
But besides that, this shit is weird and hilarious, and I love it xD
At the same time, Ikuhara often uses existing imagery and metaphor from mythology, religion, folklore, etc. -- see the "road of life" theory with Utena turning into a car.
Wow, never knew that!!
ikr ..it escalated from 1 to 1000 so quick that i love it
"the amount of times i made up bullshit for marks is insane" ... too relatable
Hah! I'm an engineering student, that tactic doesn't work too well for me. :(
@@chalichaligha3234 you can totally bullshit your way into simplifying a problem, like saying "since such and such isn't specified the system is taken as a linear system, thus using these much simpler equations it's solved"
film student right here, waaaaay too relatable. sometimes a curtain is green just because the director felt like it, but fuck it, lets see if I can prolong this essay a few more pages.
"I am now going to assume that this differencial equation is, in fact, a plastic duck. Hence..."
Only in the arts will you get something like an academic composer who thinks he’s so profound for writing that he came up with his super political world changing composition via the methods of a dream
Oh, and it was footnoted like a legitimate source
I feel like it's really easy to get caught up in the weeds of the weirdness of these shows and get really confused by how "obtuse" everything is, but I recommend just riding that wave of weirdness and honestly don't think about it too hard. I might be in the minority here, but I genuinely think you don't need to understand every bit of imagery in these shows in order to enjoy yourself. The real best thing about Ikuhara's work to me, is the themes of his shows and how he addresses them. They're themes that I don't see in a lot of anime, and if I do see them they're not handled nearly as sympathetically or in as interesting a way. Child abuse, LGBT themes, the crush of society on those it deems outcasts, THAT'S why I'm here. You ride that wave of weirdness until it crashes into a wall of emotion. The weirdness to me is almost more comic relief, that if you want to dig really hard into yeah you'll find some hidden symbolism that makes you enjoy the show more. But you don't NEED to.
Same with Utena. The repressed emotions, the symbolic meaning behind the sword fights and even of her constantly doing calisthenics while taking to the (obviously gay) principal as (as I see it) a way to show how detached she is of his sense of order and how she's trying to stretch beyond the boundaries imposed on her are the gold of that show for me. That and the amazing use of architecture to impart meaning. The cityscape in Utena is a character of and unto itself.
As for Sarazanmi, all the butt-related stuff (including lots of fart jokes for a single episode) taken from actual folklore may explain why it looks so weird for Western audiences, but the major points are what you mentioned. Ikuhara's work stands out thanks to how complex is its use of subtext when related to real life issues in Japanese culture, and that is amazing.
My general take on Ikuraha's storycrafting is that he's not crafting a story. He's crafting a vibe. The logic frequently doesn't track from beat to beat, but the emotions almost always do. It certainly means there's more places to get pulled out of the experience by something that doesn't make sense. But when the emotional moments hit, that's what sticks with an audience the longest. Utena is a confusing jumble. But it's an unforgettable, empowering jumble. I see potential for Sarazanmai to be as empowering for denizens of the age of digital memory. Or maybe it's a horror story. Or maybe it's just Mad Libs. We'll find out.
I think it's the same for a lot of surrealism, like Dali or David Lynch (who people like to compare Ikuhara to). Dali admitted many times that he liked weird imagery in general and he wasn't trying to load symbolism into everything. You can see themes and metaphors in surrealist stuff (like Eraserhead being about the fear of parenthood), but you're doing it wrong if you try and analyze everything in Eraserhead looking for a deeper meaning.
Wow! the part of you comment about "child abuse" and "lgbt" is so strong in the chapter 2 ... I mean the story of the kid with black hair and the kiss in the last minutes of the chapter, ohh and the cops too they are coming from a shounen ai manga. I was so disappointed with the animes of this season but when I saw Sarazannmai it was so metaphoric and weird that it was so good, people just sees the "weird" and "creepy" of the anime but they can't see all the truth behind the metaphors , that's why I love this show.
Sorry for my bad English
I usually always focus on the main theme of an anime. For Sarazanmai, it is connections and each character has their own take on it. There are many sub themes interlaced with this when you see episode 2 but I came to Sarazanmai because of the PVs where connections were mentioned so much that I learned the Japanese word for connections from it. That is why I am here, to get a feels trip about connections and how important connections are and how they are formed.
Ikuhara saves anime once again.
Even if most people won't understand more than 40% of it, myself include XD.
The butt thing is based on japanese folklore. That when you are in the water they prey on you and can steal your soul through your butt, because they believed the soul wasin the stomache. Thats real folklore.
That shouldnt be the weird thing.
Right. It's not weird. It's just folklore. It's not weird because this wasn't the idea of Ikuhara or anyone else who was alive. It's old stories told to children about demons attacking their anus if they do dangerous things like play in water. Nothing weird about it. Alright, I'll stop. I don't want to be an assoul.
I even found the answer what it means, ikuhara wanted to make a mature kappa anime.
Exactly. I am 100% sure there will be a koncho episode too.
@@ShenSeiken that joke was bad.
The butt thing is part of the folklore, but LItterally Everything Else (except for cucumbers) is completely out of no Freaking Where.
Also, it's not the soul itself. The Kappa believe that every human has a powerful "Ball" that happens to reside just past the anus and that consuming said "ball" will grant them great power.
Just putting that out there.
Two episodes into Saranzamai, I'd argue that there's beauty in not understanding what the hell is happening.
In Utena there's a very clear set of characters, with arguably clear intentions as the show progresses, and the brigade of symbolism and timeless metaphors that typically draws people into the show.
In Penguindrum, there's an overarching theme that, although rote, feels well established and from there the characters navigation through that theme brings enjoyment. (as well as, of course, timeless metaphors and symbolism)
But in Sarazanmai, a lot of that is forsaken for one, heavy, theme and hints at other literary tropes. But no actual driving force... yet. The enjoyment comes from the ride- and good God almighty, is it going to be one hell of a ride.
So, basically, he's the David Lynch of anime.
I mean, Ikuhara has said that he is a big fan of David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick.
That why I love Ikuraha
Not really, he's actually very straightforward compared to Lynch. But he is great, nevertheless.
Ikuhara is certainly the Derek Jarman of anime. The most Lynchian anime I've seen recently was Boogiepop and Others, though.
More Jodorowsky than Lynch
Utena turning into a car metaphorically makes a lot of sense. The whole thing is about how the world of the show is an illusion, and the characters literally say this. The line that precedes it is literally "a car without a key sets to rust." So Utena is the car, the vehicle to free Anthy from the school, which works well for 2 reasons. 1) Akio in the show would show people to "the End of the World" by driving them outside the school (with cars being literally the symbol associated with that particular arc) and 2) Anthy can't escape without taking the initiative herself, she has the key and Utena is the car. Utena empowers her to leave but Anthy is actually the one that has to do it.
Agree. Die hard Ikuhara fan here 🤟🏼 Utena is everything 💜
I loved Penguindrum, it was weird, but Sarazanmai's weirdness is off the charts
Same but i never laugheted more than with this bulshit 😂😂
After reading the summary everyone's reaction was the same and especially mine. "Wait what the actual fuck"
Seriously I haven't been more glad that I passed a anime so hard as Sarazanmai~
Better and more cohesive than Penguindrum already
Yeah me too! When I heard this was another Ikuhara I was so excited
Sarazanmai is so great, the reactions are equally great.
Ikuhara's work has one driving theme. You are who you are, and that is wonderful and great. You are capable of being good, and doing good. You are deserving of love and respect. All the characters are points in that discussion. He's not that hard to figure out.
Just stop being a dork about it....
Best thing is that you didn't even mention the singing or even the boxes conclusion and you're still basically comatose already
that's my favorite thing about episode 1. You get halfway through and think "well there's the weirdness. This is the weirdest shit I've ever seen" but in reality the weirdness has barely even started and it comes in *all* flavors.
There is always a satisfaction when you watched someone descend into madness on camera... as long as it doesn't involve someone dying.
I mean, people turning into zodiac animals is also pretty weird. Granted, there's no ass eating in Fruits Basket that I know of.
Behind the scenes, though.... who knows...
There is in fan fiction.
yoozerneim I mean in the OG fruits basket
We don’t know what Haru did to that council guy
But he convinced him...
maybe there should be....
A shame, really
I've never laughed so hard at one of his videos before than this XD
Zeno the consistent mental breakdowns and hysteria made it top notch humour I agree
XD same
Haha XD meme
I've been looking for an explanation for Sarazanmai's plot and thanks to this video and the explanation about who is behind the anime.. I now understand the "Open to interpretation" bit and I'm more content with watching the show from on foward.
What I, personally, am attracted the most.. is the art and the animation of Sarazanmai. It's such a beautiful style of anime and I'm digging it.
I was cracking up the whole time 10/10
I absolutely love this show. The art and songs are amazingly good and catchy and I love what is slowly being uncovered in the show.
I also don't think their rationalizations for working with Keppi are up to interpretation either. 1st they are cursed for breaking his shrine, so he can torment them into helping. 2nd, they are greedy teenagers.. the want free wishes.. and he's stringing them along with the promise that gold plates are possible.
I felt the same about penguindrum and yurikuma... just, not entertaining enough. But saranzanmai... I CAN'T GET ENOUGH of it. The visual style, the layers upon layers of meaning and symbolism. Both visual and metaphorical symbolism. Then the music. And the cherry on top is the transgressive nature of all the butt stuff. LOVE IT
2:38 I feel like there is a potential meme format in there like.
Thanos: "I was suppose to be a farmer but then I watched Sarazanmai and now you know here we are."
Watching this anime made me laugh-cry quite a bit and holding my head in my hands while wondering what i'm doing with my life. I will continue to watch it, but it's among the weirdest shows i've seen thus far.
This show is a Blockbuster bull-shit, we should always try new things even BS 😅
Update after episode 6 the shows gotten pretty serious with its character expositions and development and has a somewhat comprehendable ndable message it relays to its audience trough each character arc, tough it still is pretty weird, but I have been and hope you have been able to seriously enjoy it if you can get some of the symbolism.
Penguindrum is definitely one of my favorite anime of all time, so It makes me sad to hear you didn't like it.
I loved it. I got the plot and concept of the Kappa prince, thanks to Gegege no Kitaro. So the butt stuff didn't unnerve me. I was laughing and shaking my head and loving the whole episode. Can't wait to see where it goes next.
Now it's at episode 9 now.
This show could easily be anime of the season if it keeps up with the last 2 episodes.
We finally, after all of these years, have an anime about what is truly important in life…
*… eating ass.*
i went into this anime blind after seeing it get more than 1k upvotes on r/anime. And to say my mind was blown would be an understatement.
Great episode, the off script explaination was top tier, can't wait for fruits basket 😍
This is now my favorite Gr first reaction video ever
my only complaint about the show is that there's no dub (yet). There's just so much going on that reading the subtitles becomes so distracting that I got lost in what was going on. This is going to require multiple watchings.
edit: there's a dub!!
Vanilla Milkshake completely agreed, I got really happy yesterday when I found the dub.
I liked the episode even though I didn’t understand much of it. I guess in some way it gave me the same feeling I had when I first started watching FLCL somehow(?).
Also the butt organ thingy is in the actual legends of the kappa. It’s called a shirikodama and kappas extract it from humans’ butts and eat it, killing the human in the process.
FLCR was what came to mind as well for me.... but this one just exploded the last 3 brain cells i had left.
all4wandy same lmao when the episode ended I just stared at the wall wondering if I had just blacked out
@@SoryWearsPrada i feel you so much... i was just saying wtf the whole episode unable to stop hoping for answers that will never be given.
all4wandy for real lol
Arkada in rest of video: super animated and moving around a lot
“The amount of times I made up bullshit for marks is completely insane” completely deadpan, completely
I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE
One Sarazanmai Episode Later : What... the hell... did I just... watch?
"There's a lot of butt stuff here." -Tristan
More like "Is Sarazanmai Worth Rewatching?"
And the answer is still YES! YES! YES! YES!
Y E S !
Even though I don't think I will be picking up this show personally, I have shown sections of this video to multiple people already, and about half of them have decided to watch it based on your descriptions!
Sarazanmai was weird as shit, but by the end of binging the entire show in one day, I had become ridiculously invested and almost cried at the end
Glass reflection, I don’t know what your talking about this show seems completely normal, the only thing that could make it more normal is if they killed someone with pure friendship
If you were Japanese and grew up learning about Kappa folklore, this anime wouldn't be any different from your run of the mill bigfoot or yeti show.
I'm so glad I decided to wathc this anime. Love Utena and I think in Sarazanmai there is something from Utena too. Need to watch a final episode of course in next few days, but one thing for sure - Sarazanmai is done with soul and heart from their creators. I really love it.
The fact that you took what was in my brain pan after watching the first episode, & made the most cohesive (& entertaining) reaction video on it that I can possibly imagine, is one of the main reasons I admire what you do! As far as the series goes, I simultaneously don't know if I'm going to watch any more episodes, & don't know how I'm going to avoid it. That's about the best I can do on this one.
You doing a video ad-lib was actually really fun. As was the mental realisations actually hitting you. Loved this ^_^
My dude, you should do more of this style of video (the unscripted ramble). It was hilarious xD
Anime, amirite?!
Yessir
He just called that Kappa a frog..Arkada's gonna turn into a kappa too like those other kids lol. I've been a fan of Ikuhara's work so I'm not too surprised about how weird his anime will get.......Though I still did not expect any of THAT to happened.
Ikuhara Is At It Again And Yet Here We All Still Are.........Watching It
(additional note that I'm not a die hard fan of Ikuhara but I am a die hard fan of Utena and if/when you make a video abt Utena I'll probably collapse like a 19th century Victorian heiress across the nearest fainting couch after learning something Completely Scandalous and Sordid! Elizabeth! Bring me my smelling salts!)
Love Bullet Arashi wasn't really weird, it was just alright in my book and could have been better. But Sarazanmai is truly Ikuhara's magnum opus and I can't wait to see more.
A Magic School Bus reference, huh?
Shit must of gone down hard then.
This is just the kind of weirdness that'll start me watching anime again hahaha. I'm a filthy casual that's ready for Fruits Basket reboot but RUclips recommended the 420 feline video and it seems radical in its themes. It's not quite what I expect from Japan and I'm completely down for that. I watched this video to get a better idea of what the show is about and I'm honestly more impressed with Ikuhara than anything haha. I would love to see you feature artists or directors and just talk about their works and what they're known for!
When you were talking throughout the video, I figured out another reason why this show peaked my interest. I have a soft spot for Arakawa Under the Bridge and Saranzanmai reminds me of it. They are both weird af and kappa related. The animation was also beautiful but I was constantly questioning wth am I watching? It did have a main plot and if Saranzanmai can hold together its main plot like Arakawa did then I'd be very excited to watch it! Please review episode 2 soon!
sarazanmai is an adventure
"Good" is always how the individual interpret things. Anyhow the music of Sarazanmai is absolutely amazing and the visuals are soothing... except for the anus part.
Butt, some things are not meant to be overthought.
Thanks for reaffirming that I didn’t miss some key plot point or obvious symbolism and that this show is just truly weird.
This is definitely this season’s show I’ll have to watch alone because I literally can’t recommend it to anyone I know without ending up on a list.
Ark, being in so much pain in trying to explain this anime, is the highlight of my day.
Giving a new meaning to Joji's "I eat ass," meme
Penguindrum was and is awesome.
Thank you so much... i felt dead because i couldn't talk about it with anyone... i needed some one to verbalize my feelings for me... this was cathartic
For the years I've been watching your videos I have to say this has been one of your best! 😁
You know, I'm waiting for the day that someone from the production team of one of Ikuhara's shows stands up and tells us: "Literally, he just did what he wanted. There's no symbolism to it. You've all been fooled. Like, there's some. But those are surface-level. Those are the ones you can see. Otherwise, no. He fooled us all."
They will straight up die for telling the truth.
I just finished Sarazanmai and I think the message is more clear than in any of his other series. Besides the butt stuff, everything else makes sense the farther you get into the story. The characters' motivations and backstories get revealed slowly. For only having 11 eps it didn't feel rushed either. I really enjoyed it, I hope you can do a full review of it one day!
I'm Japanese but I can't explain this anime either lol However I would say this anime is gonna be somthing awesome!
i just love the fact from this show that these boys must always exchange sth in order to use their power .. not just the power produced from thin air
the ending to this song is strangely amazing
Wonder how he feels about it now after episode 8
Ikuhara makes avant garde anime. After Sailor Moon and Utena he got more freedom to make whatever he wanted. I did not like Yuri Kuma Arashi, but this looks good so far. I like that he is playing with male main character this time!
Funnily enough i read up on kappa days before sarazanmai dropped. When it happened i was like, "oh, a kappa actually does what kappas do?" Apparantly nobody else knew kappas take shikodama from peoples anus
I love this show it has actually brought me to tears
I like the dancing and music in that show quite some. The animation and the ending are also really cool looking. I like some of the unexpected weird stuff in it as well. It's getting more interesting with each episode as you learn more about the main three characters slowly.
"The amount of bullshit I made up for marks is insane."
As a fine arts student, I can safely say that I feel that so hard, mate.
Come on, they made a whole series based on the statement , "bend over, I'll drive".
You can get through this.
I feel Arkada's sentiment so hard. The parts of Sailor Moon that Ikuhara contributed are some of my favorite in the series (Several episodes as well as the first movie) and Utena has a very special place in my heart even though the depth of symbolism left me a bit lost at times. Literally none of his other anime have peaked my interest in the slightest. Their concepts alone are to out there. At least even when Utena was weird, it was still grounded enough to sorta understand and stay engaged in what was happening. Hell, even the infamous car transformation, as much as it threw me through a loop the first time I saw it AND as much as I honestly hate it as a narritive and creative decision.....I still can comprehend enough of the context to get what things it most likely represents.
Seriously though......cars in Utena fill my with rage and that includes Akio's stupid sports car and it's weird adulthood and sex metaphors. The movie was worth it in the end though because the two characters from the original series I hated the most are both dead in the movie. 8D
I love it, because it's gloriously weird. It makes me want to show *that* scene to people just to see their reaction. And weed out the people who are as weird as me maybe. But also just cos it's so wtf.
I have watched all of Ikuhara's work. And when I started YuriKuma Arashi my main reason for continuing it was to spite my bf who was greatly disgruntled by the show and it's reused animation. (Which I had to explain was, just the directors thing 😂) but I fell in love with his work because of its weirdness. Beautiful weirdness.
TLDR; It's weirder than all his previous stuff. Omg watch it.
MS FRIZZLE'S FIRST NAME IS VALARIE!?
Pretentious as it is, a quick guide to watching Ikuhara:
1) He often does actually try and say something with his shows, and tries to say them in ways that get you asking questions about it rather than just saying it.
2) He does also like to fuck around with images, gags, and expectations. This man won't leave Chekov's Guns for his main ideas unfired, but he will set up guns and not fire them, and if that gets you asking the import of them, all the better. If it gets a laugh and still gets you asking the import of it, better still.
3) He heavily uses repetition, both in stock animation and key phrases and words, to nail down the central subject he wants to talk about, and the higher the animation is for that segment, the more likely this is a repeat subject that he is using to get you into the headspace for dealing with his themes. Anchor on to those while watching. They form....The essential lock for whatever he's getting at.
4) Building on that, there tend to be a few key moments in any of his series that are intended to cast everything you have seen before in a new light, particularly unlocking the repeated sequences and the way they tie in everything else. Ikuhara wants you to watch his series twice. That can be frustrating.
4) Speaking of repetition, he does like his auteur language set that he has built (Look up Ikuhara Bingo) and uses that to allow the distinctions between his works to stand out all the more starkly. I'm not saying you need to speak Ikuhara first to get Ikuhara, but it definitely helps to know the poles he dances around and how he uses them. If you've watched Ikuhara, you'll have an easier time. If you haven't before, don't stress over it.
5) Probably don't try and actually figure out what's happening the first time through. The abstract surrealism and soup of various different kinds of meaningful icons tend to be processed better if you just let them flow over you. This is a problem for us non-Japanese folk, because Ikuhara steeps a lot of his language in his own culture-stealing the organ in the anus is actually a thing about Kappas, not a Ikuhara addition, believe it or not, as an example.
6) Ultimately, his shows deliberately exist in a "take it seriously, but not too seriously, try and understand a lot but don't try and understand everything" kind of fashion, and honestly, best way to go about his. He has designed his shows the way he wants to tell them, and they tend to be best when seen that way, but hey, it's a busy world, and if you can't do that, just go along for the trip.
Now that said, wut the fuk Ikuhara.
"That's why any of this is here." *spots Escaflowne* Please review it! I'd love to hear your take on the old and new dub
There were so many hidden metaphors in the episode
If it is any consolation, this was me verbatim trying comprehend and then reciprocate that episode to friends.
3:34 nice reference to shinji's ending rant
The amount of disrespect for ikuhara here is too sad. The man puts all his heart and thought into his works just so you can shit all over a message he's trying to convey by calling it random made up bullshit.
Im disappointed.
This is somehow my first Ikuhara show!
And to be honest....
I REALLY enjoyed this, it was so damn weird and out there, but also had some other stuff that could be interesting to explore and left me with questions!
I seriously can't wait to see where this goes....
Well you started with his weirdest show , his others show are LESS weird but still weird .....ENJOY 😚

Kunihiko Ikuhara: gay otters in anime
I dunno, man. I'd say Sarazanmai was on the EASY side of comprehensibility when it comes to Ikuhara's filmography.
Finally, a real deep anime. An anime that reaches deep into you, into your darkest depths.
Ark try explaining Mamoru Nagano.
8 episodes in and this somehow turned from a fun-wtf-kind of show to a truly heartfelt one. Yes, everything is insane, but all that insantity somehow pays off.
I really hope it keeps up during the final episodes because if it does, it might just be a contender for anime of the year.
Yes, a show about eating ass.
No, I don´t know why either.
I enjoyed this a lot. Your extemporising was top notch and I kinda get what you’re not explicitly referring to 👌
i am angered in the first two minutes by the implication that this guy doesn't understand why utena turns into a car in Adolescence of Utena
because if you don't get that blatant metaphor you have no credentials to try to explain the rest of Ikuhara's work.
synth -chan wait that’s real?
@@juanpablorobayo3437 yes, cars represent a specific concept in the Utena universe that's heavily emphasized in the original series. So anyone who watched the show would have realized, 'ah, this is meant to be a metaphor for [x]'.
I brought my motion sickness meds. I'm ready for Ikuhara's Wild Ride.
At the half way point of the vid and that's the start (and end) of the explanation of the anime. Sounds like my cuppa tea oh god why do I now know what this is.
I went into this show not expecting anything. This video is pretty much like my reaction in a big, non-scripted nutshell... also, new favourite glass reflection episode. GG :D
I JUST found out that ikuhara directed something new after randomly deciding to scroll through his MAL page. I was wondering why I never heard anything about it and I guess this is why lol
Love Ikuhara's work, but I'm 99% sure he went to Asakusa, and in particular the famous Kappabashi Shopping street and fell in love and decided to make an anime about it. Everything is drenched in some part of Asakusa in it. I'm actually finding it kind of fun. That being said, there's a reason outside of one of my two close friends that I don't generally recommend the anime, mostly because while to me it's fun, I know now after talking to anti-animers, and anime lovers a like, some people just don't like weird anime, and that's OK
0:15
Someone needs to cosplay as this
I’m still trying to convince myself that Sarazanmai wasn’t some weird fever dream...
It was so good, but also my initial emotions are still “wtf did I just watch?!?”
You suchs ! But we share the same feeling about this anime...its unexplainable, just awesome
Until this video, I had no idea that Utena and Yurikuma Arashi were made by the same guy. Now that I know...I am not surprised in the slightest
I will 100% watch an Utena video series if you ever decide to do one!
It's a show that is very difficult to understand. It has an army of fans that will analyze it. The director could be saying something profound, or maybe he's saying nothing at all. Do you see?
This is truly the dark souls of anime :V
May not be my cup of tea, but I wholeheartedly applaud its bold originality.
I had a very late night when I watched this show, so I watched right before going to bed at like 2am. The experience of sitting in my bed and falling asleep while trying to process this show was... Almost entirely indescribable. It was absolutely surreal.
