i watched the og anime in 2004 ( i was 10) and while growing up in a screwed up family, Fruits Basket was the anime that kept me sane, comforts me. i rewatched 26 episodes anually . i really mean it, anually. Up until i was 14 years old, had my own laptop and i found out about the manga with 136 chapters, it became my holy grail. I learned a lot from all char's backstories, even Tohru. Everything made sense. I guess Fruits Basket is like a therapy for us the broken ones. Fruits Basket 2019 finally gave me the satisfaction that i longed from since 10. Fruits basket change how i view people around me and the way i live my life. I have no shame of saying Honda Tohru is my role model. Fruits Basket trully inspired me. I will always go back to Fruits Basket, anytime , anywhere

So the Japanese has all new cast because the original author wanted it that way. Don't think she cared for the English dub cast either way though but voice acting is bigger in Japan to my understanding. She is a big part of the production which I am sure she is ecstatic about since the original anime kinda went the comely route and blanket over the drama and ignored her completely. I am 100 percent glad the remake happened cause the original anime, though had it's charm, did not do the story justice

That is so true, sometimes watching this anime was so much of a burden, I relate more with likes of Rin/Kyo, running away from things, or ending things, being self centred and acting rudely with people.

When a show is beautiful in so many ways as Fruits Basket you can't help but realize this may well be the best anime I have ever watched. No one show has made me cry so many times or so deeply. If you have had any tragedy in your life, you can relate to at least one of these characters. I ep that sent me to the depths of despair was the one where Momiji can never have a relationship with is little sister or his mother. My heart broke so completely I cry every time I even think of it. I have a friend from a totally different background who feels exactly the same way. This anime touches everyone who watches it, forever. I saw the og anime, read every sentence of the manga and now have seen all of Season one and two of the reboot and all I can say is nothing will ever compare to this amazing story. The writer had to be brilliant in so many ways to develop every one of these characters to perfection, taking my heart on a journey with each and every one. So, yes, Fruits Basket is the best anime and perhaps story in general to ever be put to paper. Nothing I have ever scene even comes close.

I am SO GLAD that someone else can see how WONDERFUL this show/manga is🤣 i found out about this show in like January this year and i binged all of season 1 then around the first 5 episode of season 2 i started reading the manga, i finished the manga in July this year AND OMG IT GETS SO MUCH BETTERR when i first started watching and reading this i knew this is literally one of the best shojos of all time 🤚and that's just my opinion but i say it's 100% true. And i didn't know about the 2001 series because i wasn't even alive LOL but i watched and.... i just couldn't 😭it was sooo different from the manga the changed the whole meaning of this story and honestly it'll be fine if you dont watch it unless you want to appreciate the remake even more🤣(also im not trying to just shit on the 2001 anime and ik alot of people do like it because of the nostalgia, reason why i don't like it is because of the ending 💀 it was just a mess. But i could keep typing but im probably already writing a 7 paragraph essay 😭but the series gets EVEN BETTER. definitely one of my favorites but my favorite of all time is attack on titan 🤚

I was introduced to Fruits Basket in basically the exact same way as you! It has pretty much been on my radar since I first got into anime, and when I started keeping up with seasonal anime last year, I heard about the reboot of this show that was apparently once pretty popular. Something kept nagging me about it for a while and one day, I just decided to drop everything and watch this anime which will probably be my second favourite anime of all time.
This is probably one of the best analyses of Fruits Basket I have seen so far! I particularly appreciated you giving Masaru Yokoyama some love, because I feel like nobody talks about him, even though he is such a great composer. You are such a great presenter!

I think you have it backward: the show goes ''first you need others to help you get back up, others to say they love and support you'' and then you can go on your own strength alone. Yuki, Kisa and Rin are the most explicit about this.
Westerners kinda think the reverse most of the time (individualism!!!).
I loved your video and could hear you talk about Fruits Basket endlessly!

As a manga reader, I can't even start to say how happy I am that Fruits Basket gets a reboot that will adapt the whole thing. This may be the finished story that touched me the most, partly because I had the books. Even if the 2001 anime wasn't bad, I just can't watched it again. The comedic aspect was too much and they spent an entire episode of Arisa and Saki coming to the Soma's house to see if it was good for Tohru. With a lot of long and repetitive scene when our 3 main guy transform and must hide.
I lost my mom when I was 11. I relate a lot with Tohru back in the day and I think reading her story made me stronger somehow. As I grow up, I tends to relate a lot more with Yuki, who's the second main character in my opinion. His evolution might be the biggest one after Tohru, if not first, and I feel for him a lot. Season 2 was his and I'm kinda sad and mad they didn't end it with the banquet. Instead, going for Tohru's conversation with Kureno give us some answers but just cut in the middle of it, leaving a lot of things out.
Akito is my favorite character in this show but I can't say why. At least, not until season 3 is out. She may be a villain but what I liked in this season is how they give us hints on why. Imagine being a child with the responsability of being the head of your family while being expose as god. No one seems to tell her what she might or shouldn't do, like a child with no bondaries. Then, she must appear as a male for a reason we still don't know while still being in a woman body. She say earlier that she despise women, and she refers at herself with "boku", a japanese pronoun for male. Her gender is an important point of her character and won't be left unexplored later. Her bond with the Zodiac spirits seems to be the most important thing in her life, probably what she lives for. She stated it in Yuki's flashback : she is needed, she was expected by everybody. And then, suddenly, without warning, that bond is breaking. She looks so afraid when she beg Kureno to stay with her... Episode 1 of season 3 is gonna be wild. So she tries to force everyone to stay with her by any mean, hurting people if they try to escape or find happiness with another person. Still, she let Tohru come in but wasn't expecting her influence to be so powerful on the Soma. And her relationship with Shigure... For me, she may be the more tragic character of all and I hope people will understand her better by the end of season 3.
Tohru is just close to Akito, being the sweetest girl in the world. There's still some point in her story to discover, a theme that come back a lot with her. As the story goes, she starts to be more selfish and stand her ground. But there's still a wall, a box she's not ready to open yet. She has to deal with her mother's death, only one year prior, and season 2 make clear it's still not resolve. That why opposing the two of them is brilliant. For her own desire, Tohru wants to break the most precious of Akito while she herself can't let go of her mother. I love it.

As a manga reader also, i say akito is also one of my favorite characters 😂like i never realized but, i have sorta mixed feelings for her, i hate her but also lover her at the same time😂it's so complicated i just think i really like her because of how by towards the end of the story she had so much development and we can see how like omg i cant explainn but yeah 😅🤣

@@wynterv845 I'm mostly sensitive to character like that, the one that start as a villain before becoming more human with tragic events or characters that were good guys before turning evil. That notion of grey people fascinate me.
For Akito on herself, I just feel a lot for her. I can see why she become like that and I want to protect that child that only had bad advice all her life. I love the "no one showed me another way" type of thinking. Not sayong we should forgive her and forget what she's done... But understanding why baddies became who they are is absolutely amazing

the ONLY quibble I have in the manga vs the anime is that Kyo did indeed visit her in the hospital but wasn't allowed in to see her. I think a 15 second clip of him being told he can't see her while he's trying to visit would have made more sense

    • @dogti2959

@@Annie1962 Yeah, season 3 has some major issue about the adaptation. Moving the nightmare scene makes Tohru look like an ashole. All the Yuki development being erase (along with his relationship with Machi and Kakeru "redemeption" toward Tohru", not showing how hard Kyo tried to see Tohru after what happened...

Now that im thinking about it kyo and tohru are alike in the sense they were treated as outsiders. With kyo being the cat that was tricked into not attending the feast with god and therefore the cat in the soma family is treated as a monster and tohru being tricked into being the rice ball in the game fruit basket and waiting for the rice ball to be called so she could join in but who would call rice ball in game where you call out fruit.
I think thats why tohru was able to sympathize with kyo and wanted to be friends with the most because she knew what it was like to be left out and also knowing the zodiac story kind of knew what being the cat ment. She even cried when her mother told her the story when she was a child and wished that she could include the cat.

While I really like Fruits Basket, I wouldn't call it the best shojo nor would I want there to be a best of anything. That'd imply others are not as worthy and narrows art down too much. For instance, while I like Fruits Basket for having a wide cast of developed characters and other aspects, I like Kamisama Kiss/Hajimeshita primarily for its strong-willed heroine who pushes herself through vulnerability and doubt in a supernatural world (as well as her banter with the powerful and knowledgeable but unambitious and pessimistic male lead). I'm also getting into another Shojo Ouran Highschool Host Club, which is partly a parody of shojo stories.
I'm not trying to be negative. If anything, I'm trying to be positive as I find many individual works to hold something that even the apparent best does not.

There’s a reason Fruits Basket was the second highest selling manga in America when it first came out back in the 90s (people forget that when they talk about the history of manga in the US. Literally it sold more copies then any popular shonen at the time. The only manga that beat it was Naruto).

So.. My friend made me watch Fruits Basket with her and at this time I'm writing this comment, we're nearly finished with the 2nd season of the anime.
Now. I know this series is really popular and I guess I can sort of understand why, but at the same time I really don't. I don't get it at all. I didn't enjoy watching any of the characters, I didn't really like any of them to a point that I'd actually start rooting for them or feel with them. Every time another oh so tragic backstory was revealed I just rolled my eyes because.. everyone in this story appearntly has some type of trauma and to me.. at some point it started to feel like too much and overdone. Kind of like the writer just tried squeezing in as much cry bait as possible.
Yuki is, at least to me, just unlikeable. Same thing with Kyo. I can't even put my finger on why exactly, but I just can't really connect with them. I don't hate them but I didn't totally love them either. Same with.. basically every character of this show. Something just feels off with them and I just don't care about them as much as I do for other characters in other series.
Tohru, a much loves character by the fandom, to me is.. blant and annoying. She's the worst kind of people pleaser with no own will or toughts. She's just like a plot device to everyone else with no strong personality or anything that makes her stick out except that she's.. the mc.
I also have a huge problem with how Akito is written. While I do think the many different ways he abuses others is portrayed pretty realistic.. I don't get him. I hate anti's who're just evil for the heck of it, no reason and no understandable motive just.. pure evil. Such a trope can be annoying pretty easily and in his case.. it is. He does not work as a character. Just frustrating every time he's shown.
In conclusion, I don't understand why this series is so popular and I don't understand the attachment to some of these characters. Idk. That's just how it is.
