    I agree. Ally Sheedy's character was such an outsider, by choice, that she would abstain from anything in which the rest of the group chose to indulge. Case in point: remember her casually walking through the hallway when everyone else was running from the teacher? She just didn't give a fuck, and that would apply to the weed, as well.

      Excellent point. Most complex character, hands down.
      She would do the straight-laced thing, not for the sake of being a square because she’s not… but she would opt out of the activity only if EVERYONE ELSE chose to break the rules.

    • @spoooook
      @spoooook 10 месяцев назад +40

      Yeah..she doesn't conform to any stereotypical genre throughout a majority of the film except for when Claire gives her a makeover...that didn't make any sense for her character imo.

      @jmeds94 10 месяцев назад +26

      @@spoooook I think everyone’s character developed on that day and that was how hers did. The amount of honesty that came from everyone made her feel comfortable enough with them that she allowed herself to stop playing the outsider, always on the defensive. Yeah, that’s pretty much exactly how I saw it as well…like they hit a wall and this is how they’d break through. Also, to put it in more basic, ‘in-universe’ terms…John was probably already stoned, so he didn’t need more, and if he did partake you wouldn’t really notice, lol. I mean, I used to smoke before school, then leave on my lunch break to smoke again and come back…and I wasn’t any kind of ‘badass’ cool-guy like Bender; I was a dork with almost all straight-A’s-except for math. And I would have definitely partaken before a day’s worth of detention.

    • @happyninja42
      @happyninja42 Месяц назад

      I assumed he was just already high from before and didn't toke up a second time. Given my own personal history of toking before school, it would usually last for hours. The likelihood that he went into saturday detention sober is just near 0%. That's the kind of annoying activity you absolutely pre-toke for.
      And at least personally, I never enjoyed being super stoned. I liked having a solid buzz that you could ride for hours.
      Also, when I got high for the first time, the guy who let me have some of his weed, didn't smoke any during that moment. I always took it to be that he was just wanting to monitor and make sure things didn't get weird for me. I always assumed it was the same for him. He wasn't trying to "control" them, he was just trying to get them to loosen up, and he just didn't feel like getting (more) high at that moment.

I have probably watched it a dozen times over the years. I like the storyline, the characters and the actors that played the parts.They were perfect for the roles. It is a simple story about teenage growing pains that all teens, or most, have gone through since the beginning of time. It just happens to be set in the 80s. I went to a Midwestern suburban school and this movie,in a nutshell,shows what my teen years were like during 85 and 86 .This movie is s prime example of the class and tribe differencees i experienced in my little corner of the world . Every character in the movie went to my school and we all fell into one of those tribes. It explained who we were without boring you down with all the fine details or nuances going on to be one of the best generations, Gen X. Anytime the title song by Simple Minds plays it immediately transports me back to this time. I skipped school with my friend on the opening day. We had to see it opening day and the first showing was at noon so we skipped class and jumped in her MG black convertable and drove to the city. At the time it was just fun we were 17 little did i know the true impact it would have on me to this day. For me it's nostalgic. Thank you letting me share

    My perfect ending for The Breakfast Club was that they all end up in the middle class, struggling but happy.
    Claire is a slightly overweight mom with three kids, Bender is a stay at home dad with one kid who's a bit of a problem child, Andrew owns his own tree trimming business, Brian is a veterinarian, Allison is fashion designer.
    Everything comes full circle and they are happy with the lives they live now because of that one day they spent together and broke down those walls.
    It's the only way to realistically justify the feeling of triumph at the end of the film.

      (could be any of them )
      For the remaining 3 at least one would be one of the millions of "excess deaths" from the "mysterious" rise in heart attacks and other heart / circulatory system complications post 2019-2021 USA and "propagandized" pharmaceutical push...

      @@proverbialloafPerhaps, but not necessarily -- I've seen reactions go both ways. I know people on the spectrum who use THC to ease their social anxiety and tamp down their super-sensitivities; I know other NDs who have the same reaction as you.
      Likewise, among NT/allistic people, I've seen both reactions to THC, so I don't think it's as cut & dried as that.

    Interesting choice to have Allison not smoke, it certainly seemed realistic to not have everyone smoke tho, because not everyone does. It just adds a layer of depth to the construction of her character. She’s so far removed from her peers, she doesn’t even get high. More introverted, obviously, she probably spends a lot of idle time living out fantasies. Participating in drugs would give her a bridge to socializing with other students, challenging her status as the weirdo outsider. So ultimately I think it was a great decision.

I was very much anti-drug, and I very much liked that her character was her own person without the need. But I could not imagine a famous beautiful movie star falling for a lowly soldier.

    Like many folks who've already posted, I, too, am a part of the high school graduating Class of 1985. I hope there's a 40-year reunion being planned for the cast. I'm positive that event would be a huge draw for the nostalgic 50+ crowd, like myself. I had a former roommate who attended the high school where the movie was shot. Do not watch the movie with him...Will not shut up...Like he was John Hughes for my sake...He fancied himself a thespian, that he even had some kind of relationship or something with the Cusack family, John 'n Joan...Anyway, I digress, this movie, like another one of my ATF '80s flicks, The Last American Virgin, opened me up to music that I otherwise might not have had the opportunity to experience. Much like my former roommate fancied himself a thespian, I fancy myself a drummer, and hearing Simple Minds' iconic theme song to this iconic movie made me learn how to play "Don't You Forget About Me". Pure, Classic, Forever '80s Jam. See y'all at the reunion!
