I do kinda sympathize with Bender at 2:00, it's like he like just can't help but talk back, and then he gets angry when he gets in trouble for running his mouth. The struggle is real.
I loved Bender so Much...I cried when he got a happy ending... Judd Nelson was perfect in this role...I just can't imagine anyone else making that impact!! I became one of his biggest Fans for life..🎉🎉🎉❤😊
There was going to be a scene where Bender walks over to Reynolds' desk and chats with her. That part was completely cut out of the film, but I saw a leaked footage picture of it.
You're right, it wasn't a comedy. Because that one scene at 6:51, the characters (as well as the actors) were genuinely laughing. But in every actual comedy film, characters would react to that with straight or odd faces.
Without a doubt one of my all time favorite movies. Shows being in high school in the 80's about as authentic as it actually was. I was a Bender. But, I always got along across social lines with different types of people. What an awesome ride it was. Thank you John Hughes. God bless.
I always return to this scene, it’s so cute! EDIT - (7:36) To me, John and Allison came off as spiritual siblings specifically: “older jerk brother and his empathetic little sister”.
I was a mix of John Bender and Jeff Spicoli in high school (I actually looked like both those characters). Being the VERY rebellious kid I was, in my junior yr I absolutely refused to go to my 4th period class because I hated it. My "Richard Vernon" Principal was so frustrated and angry that he stuck me in an empty class room which became my class for 4th period. I would kick back and put my feet up on the desk and sleep. Sometimes other kids would cut class and hang out with me. True story...
Bender made this movie great lol. He's the real star of the whole thing, you want to see him as 'bad' at first and then you realize he's actually very based. The world needs more Benders.
Fun facts for those who don’t know much about the movie’s background. Ronald Reagan was the first choice to play Vernon, but a meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev conflicted with the shooting schedule and he could not accept the role. In Reagan’s autobiography, An American Life, he calls this “The biggest regret of my life.” Harvey Keitel was the next pick, but after reading the script he told John Hughes that he’d only play the role if he could dress in the same clothes he wore in “Taxi Driver.” So Paul Gleason, son of Jackie Gleason, won the role. During shooting he improvised the movie’s most famous line, “Yo Sal, how come there ain’t no brothers up on the wall?” The role Anthony Michael Hall played was originally written for a chimpanzee. Eric Stolz was originally cast as Bender, then halfway through filming John Hughes realized he wasn’t menacing enough and fired him. But you can still see glimpses of Stolz in the movie. That is his head between Molly Ringwald’s knees. And Hughes wanted Justine Bateman as the Claire character, but Gary David Goldberg would not give her the time off needed to film the movie. Filming was delayed for six months because of a typhoon. Emilio Estevez suffered a heart attack right before shooting began, also delaying the shooting schedule. The five students were originally supposed to serve their detention in the school cafeteria, locked into the walk-in refrigerator, but then producers were worried that children would try to copy the movie and lock themselves into their refrigerators at home, then suffocate. The exterior scenes were shot at a suburban high school right outside of Chicago, but the library scenes were filmed at the Princeton University library, which is mostly underground and that’s why you see no windows in the movie’s library. Harvard University refused permission to film the dance scene there, so it was done at Oxford in England. Judd Nelson went undercover as a high school student at a local high school because seven years after graduating from a high school in Maine he had no memory of what high school was like, and found he liked it so much that he stayed at that high school after filming and four years later graduated as their Valedictorian. No one at that school ever realized he was an actor and not a student, even though he had been in three movies before “The Breakfast Club.”
John Hughes almost wrote and planned out a sequel called "The Lunch Club", it had to be rewritten into Ferris Bueller's Day Off because he got sick and tired of Judd Nelson being a real life bully on-set and off-set. If that's the problem, then Hughes could've just replace Nelson with Robert Downey Jr. as John Bender for the sequel.
Believe it or not,if you pay attention,he actually cared for everyone there with him and tried to show em a little freedom from the "prison" they were all in despite his own problems at home and was a regular attendee there because he didn't wanna go home, next time watch the whole movie

The fact that no adult saw Bender’s attitude was a sign of trauma & abuse is heartbreaking.

I can understand my mom was too controlling of me in the 70s and early 80s.
Story of my life as well. I didn’t bend to authority’s will very easily and still don’t despite my age.
The sad part is you know that when these kids got back to school they probably never acknowledged each other again.
“Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe” 😂😂 best line.
Same I laugh hysterically whenever he says it XD
I looked up barry manilow and i died all over again bc its true, vernon looks like he raids that mans wardrobe

Bender and Allison just have this sibling-like vibe whenever I see them together or at least, when they interact. Idk why.
@@JosephBallinin313 Are you confusing Allison for Claire? lol
They are both poor and not popular, she's the only one that Bender doesn't bother. His hate is for the rich and popular.

Vernon was trying to bait Bender, and he succeeded.

what is concession between this movie words " Eat my shorts" end Bart Simpsons
😂
Bart making "eat my shorts" a trademark caused the line in this movie to be dubbed in TV version as "eat my socks".
I seem to remember Walter Matthau using that line on Jack Lemmon in one of their movies.
I'm glad they covered for Bender. Lol

John Bender was a great character. Every time I watch this movie, I like his more and more .
Classic movie with classic characters but John Bender is far and away the best. The more one watches this movie the more one realizes this.
