Bender’s blatant harassment and assault of Claire just for them to end up together is bad enough for an otherwise fantastic film, if they had also kept Vernon’s Pervin’ it definitely would’ve ruined the movie
I just saw a Molly Ringwald interview with Drew Barrymore where she talked about this. Her daughters were horrified by this part of the movie, and she was really proud of them. It was so normal in the 80s for that to be seen as appealing or romantic. My mom was born in 1971 and can corroborate that. I was born in 1991 and even in my teen years we overlooked the assault and has crushes on Bender.
Agreed, it would never fly nowadays, and Bender would likely apologise today. Even watching the film for the first time at 15, I was appalled by how Bender's blatant harassment of Claire was merely swept under the rug.
So sue him.
Genuinely felt for all the characters in this confession scene, which was apparently improvised. So powerful. What is not said is powerful in the public version.
I really enjoyed this and I completely agree with your assessment. That scene with Andy breaking down still gives me Goosebumps.

A very solid argument, Chloe, you've earned yourself a new subscriber. I'm glad that Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy vetoed the Perving Vernon subplot, since it not only wasn't necessary, but it would have turned the movie into another sex comedy. I liked that they gave Andy a better, more heartbreaking reason for being in detention, that monologue always gives me chills. Also, I think that Robin was trying to argue that there's so many more worthwhile years of your life to come, such as marrying or having children, and not to focus on four inconsequential years of school.

That Ms. Robin Coolteacher monologue is so antithetical to the opening quote of the movie... you know -- "...And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds are immune to your consultations. They're quite aware of what they're going through..." I wonder if the quote came in after that scene was chopped.

I think the perspective the “robin” character was attempting to provide was sound. It is only 4 years, so make them count and don’t get too bogged down into it isn’t a patronizing statement. She isn’t saying they don’t matter she’s saying that you should see it for what it is across the narrative of your life, that 4 years isn’t your life, but Part of your life. That reframing is actually really really helpful for people who can’t see beyond their issues or feel depressed and stuck. The “look back” and it’ll be the best time of your life nonsense is the part that just seems assumtive. How does she know it’ll be the best? Your kid being born, your college years? No.. high school is the best! Lol; that’s the no for me.
I absolutely don't miss high school and I don't look back on it being the best time of my life. My late 20s and early 30s have been the best part of my life. I was ignored or picked on in school and couldn't wait to not be stuck with my classmates.
