    As someone who repairs laptops for a living I've noticed that people seem to think every laptop should be repaired for less than £25. What people don't realise is that anyone can solder a chip on a board, anyone can buy a chip from Mouser or Aliexpress and anyone can notice the laptop doesn't switch on. What most people don't have is the KNOWLEDGE to fault find and diagnose problems, this is what they're paying for (after parts costs of course), you cannot open up your own laptop and go BQ is bad and mosfets are shorted without experience gained over many years. This is what you pay for in laptop repair!!

      It's not just for laptops, this goes for basically any machine that need repairs, even cars. It's the knowledge and diagnostics that are most of the time what you are paying for; removing dirt from a sensor, fixing a bad contact, all easy fixes, but through knowledge and experience you know these easy fixes are the cause of a problem the customer has ...

      I worked in IT at a University for 13 years recently retired due to ill health, reparing student laptops was a free service, most people are more than happy to have their devices repaired, but on occassion you meet the entitled, the when is it going to be ready, not wanting to wait, liquid spills, drive recovery, what i used to do with those people is give the device back and tell them to take it to PC world knowing full well the cost, £25 is taking the PI SS it usually costs £75 pounds for a diagnostic, turning the machine on looking at the automation of the hardware in the BIOS, checking the fans are spinning, before any repairs are done, you should charge what you think you are worth! If i get issue with my machines they will be going to you!

    Mouser has free shipping above 50 euros merchandise so in most cases it makes sense to combine various things you want to buy together and avoid the 20 euros shipping charge.

    More then likely the mosfets were shorted but because the BQ chip was dead and it wasn't showing a short since its 2 internal mosfets went open circuit. After replacing the BQ chip its internal mosfets sent the dead mosfets gates to ground. That is at least what has happen to me before

    • @JonnyMac351
      @JonnyMac351 4 месяца назад

      Doubt it they weren't shorted at the start and they would have been if they were faulty to start with.

    • @1998eclipse1998
      @1998eclipse1998 3 месяца назад

      @JonnyMac351 if a mosfet or transistor burns open you won't see anything when testing for continuity. Not ever mosfet goes short when it fails (yes it does commonly short). Small mosfets commonly burn open where higher current mosfets tend to short circuit. The mosfets in the BQ chip are very small low current mosfets used to control the gates of a more powerful mosfets

    I believe when you use power supply straight on the charger port you suddenly touch id pin and click the power supply
    Base on motherboard sheet if 19v on id pin to ignore dead other component like EC dead mosfets.

  • @TheElectr0nicus
    @TheElectr0nicus 4 месяца назад +2

    I think I know what happened. I think only one of those MOSFETs was short, so I assume the TOP-Side one (the one which connects to the power rail). Therefore you could not measure any short to GND, because there was actually a short to the voltage rail. The BQ-Chip was defenitly damaged, at least it's output drivers for the MOSFETs, therefore the short did not continue further with the bad drivers, because the chip had no possibility to turn on the LOW-MOSFET and shorting the complete power rail to GND. With the new BQ-Chip with functioning output drivers the it controlled the bottom MOSFET and switched it on and because the TOP one was shorted the whole rail got shorted and it killed the remaining good LOW-SIDE MOSFET in the process. I am pretty confident that this is how it happened, because i actually do such circuits as an electronics design engineer, not for computers but for industial electronics. I have seen many weird failure modes of BUCK or BOOST converters which you can't possilbly think of that those can happen ;-)
    And lastly thank Sorin for that really thrilling repair video (y)

    after changing BQ chip and trying to add voltage to laptop with power supply (not original charger) you can see sparks when adding positive terminal to charging port. This was due to shorting pins short with 19V and 4+ amps. I think this was the end for those mosfets - they didn't see that coming :D

    Why the FETs failed? Maybe the original faulty BQ chip sent too much voltage to the FETs and weakened them so that when a working BQ chip was fitted and the power was supplied the FETs then failed on supplying initial current to the battery. Total guess. I'm not sure about when Sorin shorted the power probe to ground at 15:45 as has been suggested. I can't see how that would destroy two FETs simultaneously so far away from the point of the spark. As it was just the power probe being shorted to ground it wouldn't have gone through those FETs but that is probably why the power supply clicked. I know what we all say about coincidences... but.

    The mosfets were shorted @15:45 when the Red Probe was accidentally shorted from power to ground on left side of charging port (watch tip of red probe and you can see flash/spark), that's why mosfets where blown...After further review I could be wrong. It seems that that red probe was shorted between power and ground for at least ten seconds as indicated by the second spark/flash @15:53 when probe was removed, during which time the statement "wait the power supply is clicking" was made. The PS was clicking due to the short to ground which may or may not have been the cause of the mosfet failure, Seems likely though. Good job. Good video. Thank You...

    36:19 "why those mosfets got burned?" take a look at 15:46 - watch at the red probe and see that spark. I will say something unlogical but I don't see clearly if you touched to ground or is it a spark of high 5amps current draw, but maybe -just maybe, you created a very high spike, which passed trough first two mosfets and finally killed two charging mosfers (laptop was off but huge battery was connected, so that two charging mosfets, draw all the voltage/current). I don't have other explanation - it is very strange case
