    Thanks for the review as always, it seems like performance has not increased much over last year, which is to be expected as only the CPU was updated.
    I really wished that I had waited just a year to buy a scar model. I bought my ROG Scar 16 with the 1048 zone mini LED screen last year instead of the Scar 18. What held me back from getting the Scar 18 was it not having a mini led screen. Now that it has a Mini-LED screen this year AND has double the dimming zones as the Scar 16 last year, I feel so left out haha!
    If I can get my hands on the new Scar 16 panel with double the dimming zones, I will likely attempt to install the new panel on my current 2023 model.

      How is the performance so far in 1 year of usage, can you share experiences like any issues or how good gaming is in long term.. i have booked strix scar 16 2024 model with 4080, so need more information

    • @niko1even
      @niko1even 2 месяца назад +1

      @@OnlyVegOptions It's my daily driver that replaced my desktop and previous laptop. I use it for college classes and gaming, and so far it has been an absolute pleasure.
      The screen is amazingly fast, vibrant, and so lifelike. If feels like the lighting in games just are popping out of the screen. Absolutely fantastic for HDR, it looks miles better than my Odyssey G7. There is blooming, but you can turn of local dimming for casual use in the armory crate app. I've been digging the RTX HDR feature and have been absolutely spoiled by the amazing HDR capabilities.
      The keyboard and trackpad are comfortable to use for browsing and typing out word docs. The speakers sound great once I did some EQ within the Dolby Atmos app.
      Battery life isn't fantastic but it lasts around 4-5 hours and I carry around a power bank that acts like a backup battery. It's enough to get me through a day of lectures.
      I was worried that the plastic frame would make it feel cheap, but the finish on the deck is a sort of soft touch (not rubberized) coating that feels really nice and the chassis itself is pretty rigid (except for the lid, it flexes a bit).
      The serviceability is pretty good, most parts are accessible. I did replace the liquid metal with PTM7950 and the stock thermal putty with TG-PP10 on the VRMs and VRAM. I undervolted the CPU by 125mV and was able to achieve around 33k on Cinebench R23 with max fans. I was able to undervolt it to -155mV and got around 34.6k but I blue screened often. Still pretty insane results imo.
      Gpu temps are around 84c and CPU around 90c while gaming. On performance, the GPU wattage was around 135-140w. On turbo, it was around 160-175w. Super heavy loads can max out the throttle limit on both the CPU and GPU (87c on GPU and 95c on CPU), but they did maintain decent clock speeds.
      Overall, it's a well thought-out laptop that feels like it will stay relevant for a while to come, especially since it has a 4080 mobile which supports frame gen and a 1440p 240hz mini led display that looks unbelievably amazing.

    I am confused between getting this laptop or the Legion pro 7i Gen 9, but I feel like I am leaning more towards this laptop because of the 18' screen and the color accuracy. I have a few questions: 1-What's your impressions on the overall build quality?. 2- I conduct lots of online meetings so I was wondering if the webcam looks good on softwares like Zoom or Microsoft meetings. 3- I don't usually move around with my laptop, but I may require to bring it to an office meeting every couple of weeks or so, also is the weight of the laptop tolerable to walk around with or will I require a trolley bag?. 4- Lastly, which laptop would you recommend? this one or the Legion pro 7i Gen 9?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  3 месяца назад +4

      Hi, first, I would like to thank you for watching my video. For a couple of years I used the Legion 5 pro and then a legion 7. I loved both, although the track pads rattled and actually failed on the 5 pro. But Lenovo has excellent warranty, they sent a tech to my house and fixed it. Even after it expires it is cheap to do an extended warranty so that alone is worth a lot in my opinion.
      I've not had to deal with Asus on any laptop repairs, I only owned one for any period of time and didn't have any issues. In testing I have had issues with their fans clicking but this scar 18 was flawless.
      When I had the 16" 16x10 Legion panel I was singing it's praises. They were the first with this aspect ratio and I loved it. I now have a 17" 16x10 panel on my Tracer Vii and I must admit I would not go back to 16", and to be honest I have tied three 18" 16x10 panels and I really like the size. This one on the Asus Strix Scar 18 I would say is the best.
      The one on the Titan 18HX which I have just tested was nice, it has a higher resolution but if gaming is your focus I prefer this 240Hz over the 120 Hz on that.
      So yeah, i do like the 18" better than the 16".
      The difference in weight is negligible. Half pound at most, plus Legion always use a larger power brick so that will offset that somewhat. At just over 6.5 lbs the Asus is very portable for its size.
      I thought the Webcam was 1080p and the mic was fine when I tested it in my stream. I thought it was fine. Lenovo usually has better cameras and mics though, but you can always buy an external one if you find it lacking.
      In sure it will be just as good in zoom or teams.
      Looking at the pricing. The Legion is listed at $3640, so $260 lower than the Asus. Plus Lenovo has coupons for students, military etc.
      Hidevolution will give you $50 off if you mention my channel (ask Ted) , or if you can find it at Gentechpc there is no sales tax if you don't live in California (talk with Ken). They also often have a 3% code for cash purchases.
      One concern I have on the Legion is the longevity of the paste. I had to repaste my Legion 7 and I know others had too within a year.
      The build quality on the Asus is not as nice as the Lenovo, but there weren't any creaks or flex and the chassis was very cool to the touch. More so than any legion I have used.

    Nice review stephen. You actually made a review rather than an AD. Because you specifically clarified that panel coating. More useful info than any other techtuber.
    I like how this big 18' premium laptop cools the same wattage as a thinner and lighter 16' 175w 4080/4090 laptops. Either asus is incapable of cooling more wattage than thinner laptops or nvidia is so afraid of their mobile gpu's stability and quality that they have to limit the wattages. Neither is a good reason. I'd love to hear these companies explanation.
    The laptop is good, but once again, the GPU lets it down HARD. This 4090m is more like a 4070ti super at best. You don't even get a real desktop 4090 at this price point.

      @@fmulleady During the gtx 1000 series, the gtx 1080 went upto 200w in a clevo laptop. Literally more than the 180w desktop 1080 and as a result beat it in perf. There were also sli gtx 1080 laptops with an oc'd i7 and that laptop had to be designed to cool 350w+ of power.
      During rtx 2000 we had 200w rtx 2080/su'er laptops. And, the 200w rtx 6000 quadro, basically a 2080ti with extra cores and 24gb of vram.

These Nvidia 4 series mobile cards mostly exceed the graphics performance of the 30 series desktop cards. The main issue are the exorbitant prices but if people can wait for discounts rather than buying on release, it can be worthwhile.

    Damn, that price point... even if I had plenty money, I wouldn't afford that because it is way too expensive for my taste. Laptops should be priced max at $2500 or 2500€. Anything over that, it's a big no.
    They can flaunt on how good performance it offers and on how good cooling it offers... All is good except the price.
    MAYBE I would buy it if they included MXM cards... yes, that's a pipe dream 😅
    Honestly, those many cores... I don't think it is worth because even with hybrid architecture Intel hasn't done anything to improve at all (like battery life and something else). Look at the power of i9-14900KS... Sure, those laptops are probably "desktop replacement" but still...

      Yeah, i know what you mean. I think manufacturers should make laptops more upgradable and have affordable mxm GPUs and socketed CPUs, or even a CPU that can sit on a PCB that we can swap in and out. But they must make heaps of profits on these systems. I know that system integrators like Hidevolution don't make too much, so it's all on the OEM.

    How do you say this compares with the MSI Titan 18HX?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  3 месяца назад +2

      I will be mentioning them both in the Titan review but the Asus was faster. The Titan's 14900HX in CB R23 was running 126W to 140W and 95 deg C. The Asus was 145w to 172W and 93 deg C. The Titan was thermally throttling and power limit throttling. I did try a - 80mv I on the Titan and didn't see an improvement in its score, so I also tried the Imon tweak and it would not boot with the usual 50 slope and - 31999 offset. I tried a lower level but it was still throttling.
      The GPU performance was similar, although I would say it was slightly worse.
      The screen on the Titan seemed brighter to me but both are bright. Very bright. But the 120Hz on the Titan meant there was ghosting 8n my test, although I think you need ninja eyes to see it game play.
      There is no Gsync on the Titan, although I thought it was OK as tearing was concerned.
      Battery life, Titan got 3 hours 40 minutes, so 2 hours less than this Asus.
      Build quality on the Titan is much better but fan noise is much more.
      Speakers about the same.
      Webcam was much worse on the Titan., as was the mic.
      The Titan does have 3 m.2 slots and two of mine were in Raid.
      For the price difference I would definitely get the Asus.
