Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Top Gun: Combat Zones for the Game Boy Advance from Mastiff Games.
Top Gun: Combat Zones is an action game with several different gameplay styles. The game includes open top-down flight levels, side-scrolling SHMUP levels and even pseudo-3D levels that scroll forward. In every case, however, you're always in the cockpit of a fighter jet. This is Top Gun, after all. Your missions range from blowing up buildings to destroying a certain amount of enemies. It sounds good, but the gameplay does get boring quickly. Particularly the top-down levels, which are slow and tedious. Nonetheless, if you're a Top Gun fan who wants to try a different take on the Combat Zones idea, this GBA version is at least different from the poorly received home console version.

It is indeed stupid you are limited to 8 directions in the top-down sections. You have the tank control setup but no precision.

You really want a good GBA flight game? Try Air Force Delta Storm, it plays just like Ace Combat on PS2 except from a top down view. The only real problem is you have to keep an eye on the altimeter so you don't hit the ground, but its not that hard.
This just looks horrible, I'd rather play Top Gun on NES!
