I remember when I was a kid, I spent $20 in a single day at this tiny arcade at a water park playing Time Crisis with some kid I had never met before. Had a great time. My Mom gave me a $20 I guess assuming I would use my $5 at the arcade but I just turned the entire thing into quarters and went to town.
Me and a random other kid back in the day beat Time Crisis 2 together, and we ended up becoming friends over that game. Unfortunately, he moved out of state before the internet ever became a big thing and I never heard anything else from him. Arcades were magical.
I did the same thing with The Simpsons arcade game. Me and a couple of random kids plunked down god knows how much money to beat that game. Loads of fun.
I have a similar story except my mom yelled at me for spending all $20 on Time Crisis 2...I got to the very end and ran out of quarters...totally worth it anyways 😆
Time Crisis is a classic. I honestly want it to keep going on forever. I get overjoyed when I go into an arcade and see a new TC game with new lore - and it's usually insane.
Time Crisis seems to become dormant series, for consoles at least. Time Crisis 5 seems to be the only game that has not been ported for any consoles at all, which is a shame, I want to try that game out but not a single arcade place in my area holds a cabinet to play. But like you, I want that series to continue, even though coming up with new features can become tough as it's become a staple with the new entry that there is a new function for the game. TC2 - Co-op Gameplay and using enemy machine guns, TC3 - Multi-weapon system, TC4 - In-game dialog and multi-screen battles(first seen in TC: Project Titan), and TC5 - Multi-pedal cover system. What would Time Crisis 6 bring to the table?

44:10 You're not climbing corpses, the redshirt army that show up to back you up pile together to form a human pyramid for you to climb to reach the bad guy.
Out of all of them: Time Crisis 3 will always be my favourite - First one I ever played - Probably used about £50 just playing the game over and over. Eventually bought the game but sadly, don't have a PS2 and I don't know where the game is, same as Time Crisis: Razing Storm.
It always perplexed me why Namco didn't release a compilation of these games on the Wii like Sega did with House of the Dead. They really screwed the pooch on that one.
@Stefano Pavone So nothing official then which means it doesn't exist......Buying things from randoms on the internet is just as gross as buying 3rd party controllers
If you're at all handy there's a diy project called Gun4Ir which has much better accuracy then the Sinden. It basically repurposes a wiimote sensor with 4 tracking points instead of the Wii sensor bar which fixes all of the Wii's tracking issues and doesn't require an overlay like the Sinden. Because it's diy you can build a cheapo basic gun or a fully decked out arcade replica with solenoid force feedback.
I actually liked Time Crisis 3 the best of the series. It felt the most polished to me, especially when the arcade cabinets were well maintained enough to have calibrated light guns AND working recoil on the light guns. The fact that enemies had 3 hits' worth of "tangibility" (you could shoot them 3 times before they disappeared) but only 1 shot was necessary to kill the basic guys also gave you a good way to chain combos and get a lot of points. I think that feature was in earlier games, but it felt really well implemented here and the animations on the enemies when they were shot felt helpful for telling how many times they'd been hit. I do agree that it was pretty hard - that final area always ran me through a couple quarters. But after many times playing through Time Crisis 3, I got to the point where I had memorized enemy appearance patterns and only the bosses ever really hit me. It was a lot of fun.
going to an arcade where they actually calibrated the lightguns properly was godlike. i feel like alot of the people running those places didn't know or care how to do it
I think my favorite game in the series is actually crisis zone. The fact that you had an mp5 instead of a pistol and the more visceral gameplay feel really shows an escalation of violence compared to the main line games.
As a super duper major fan of the time crisis series, being obsessed with this when I first came across the time crisis 2 cabinet at a local, I think you absolutely did this series justice, it's quite clear you have a lot of love as well for this series, and its always great to see other fans out. This game series is just one of those ones that greatly impacted my gaming life and I just absolutely can't imagine what life would be like if it never existed. One of those game series that induces a lot of nostalgia and emotion every time I see it. Very few series have reached up my list like this one.
Time Crisis plot is similar to Resident Evil 4, a one man army try to rescue the kidnapped president's daughter and destroy their operation and escaped the island before it explodes.
Why do I get the feeling Ms. McPherson disappeared from the franchise early on? I didn't think that there were So many characters in such a repetitively simple series.
@Stefano Pavone Gonna need Time Crisis 6 with with up to four players where Rachael McPherson is trained by Alicia Winston at V.S.S.E. and teams up with Alicia, William Rush, and Alan Dunaway in a final takedown against the infamous Wild Dog, the man that kidnapped Rachel after Sherudo's death at the hands of Richard in the original game.
@@RGBtheRhinoOverwatcher maybe in Time Crisis 6, where the future year takes place in new location/region, VSSE sends 3 agents this time to take on new mission
There is one thing about TC2 which made it easier to play than subsequent entries - there is no "cooldown" time between every shot, which means the pistol can fire as fast as your finger can pull the trigger.
@@TheZackofSpades It's definately bad localization, also did I miss it or does he mention that Wild Dog (And Robert Baxter) in the first two games is voiced by the same guy who voices Chris Redfield in the OG Resident Evil? I believe he passed away a few years ago.
@@TheZackofSpades A thing with translation and localisation is that you not only have to translate the meaning of the original dialogue but you also have to reasonably stick to the original length as well, so while the original Japanese may have been something along the lines of "Don't come any closer" (which makes sense because it's warning the player of a trap) that would have likely made the sentence too long and so would have to be squashed down to the unfortunately double meaning laden "Don't come" (not to mention that a non native speaker may not necessarily pick up on puns and double meanings like that). Of course, the same length and meaning could have been achieved with the phrase "Stay back" but that is the difference between a very comprehensive translation and one that may have been done in a bit of a hurry (which is likely the case).
@@MusicHackersOfficial Oh, that's... something. I definitely would have clinged on to keeping that Time Crisis 3 arcade on my house forever as it is one of my favorite video games of all time, and one of my favorite arcades of all time (alongside Star Wars Trilogy Arcade).
I've always loved to play this series in the arcades with my RL friend, and yes, we were both lucky enough to find all of the arcade cabinets and played each of them from start to finish.
My brother and I used to play Time Crisis 4 whenever we'd go to the arcade, and it's always a treat seeing a Time Crisis machine whenever out and about. Love this series.
I can't believe you didn't mention the extra modes in Time Crisis 4: First off there was the 'Complete Mission' which included extra levels where you played as Captain Rush, with standard FPS controls (the reason why the GunCon 3 has that awkward controller sticking out of it) though you still needed to aim and fire at enemies manually. These levels included a boss fight with Wild Fang, who had a robotic leg and some sort of wolf-based, magic powers. Then there was the 'Crisis Missions' where you played as a rookie VSSE agent going through various trials. This culminates in a boss fight with the main characters, Giorgio and Evan (as part of the training) followed immediately by a boss fight with Wild Dog... who turns out to be Richard Miller from the first game in disguise, who wanted to observe and test the new recruits himself. Also I still own my GunCon 3, including the sensors and a copy of the game (I'm from the UK but I have a US copy, so I couldn't trade it in). But after watching this video I might stick it on eBay, though it's definitely not in pristine condition lol
Thanks for this! I’ve always been curious about the extra features in the home release of TC4 but never got my hands on one (nor will I with that price tag). Really glad that Wild Fang gets a return.
That along with the extra missions in Time Crisis 3, Crisis Zone, and Razing Storm also. That being even if the F.P.S. modes in R.S., and 4 were nothing to write home about, and never really bothered playing too.
The MVP of these games were the pedals of the arcade cabinets taking so many hits and always working. I remember seeing people jumping on them with all the force they had.
Yeah, I don't know what Namco engineering guys did but it's practically sorcery with how much punishment they can take and still working. If only the gun sensor are that long-lasting though.
Okay ngl that intro was freakin cool, also would you mind talking about a Time Crisis spinoff called Cobra The Arcade?, its an arcade shooter that is pretty much a Time Crisis game in all but name since its instead based on the classic sci fi anime Space Adventure Cobra (which btw you should really watch), granted there is no console port and emulation for the game is still not possible so you unfortunately will have to get your hands on the actual arcade game which is very sad.
I would love it if this not only is a remaster but also includes the Namco arcade gun. I genuinely want the specific kick back of the gun. It feels quite awesome.
When i was around 5 yo, me and my father were playing the first time crisis and didn't even realize that the arcade were about to close. We were playing with the staff watching us and all the other games turned off and only time crisis is on
Sounds like you want to imply that the staff were all gathered around, watching a father and son play their last game of the night together before everyone packs up and goes home, but in reality I bet you guys were those rude customers who come in close to closing time (or came in earlier but have stayed well past closing) and don't even care in the slightest that everyone is waiting for you to finish up already so they can clock out and finally get off work.
@@kzym Don't listen to that jackass, I guarantee you the staff loved watching y'all play. Kind of a heartwarming moment. The most they'd have to hang around is like what, 10 minutes? Hardly an issue.

The father in law didnt expect me to beat the game from start to finish, best quid I ever spent. He was quick to move us along when I spotted the sequel cabinet a few doors down 🤣 fuck I'm getting old.
Man, this REALLY took me back. I forgot how many times I had actually played Time Crisis on my PS1 and TC2 at the arcade, hearing all this music and dialog again was a trip, especially the Results theme after each chapter. Kudos, for this one Gman, definitely one of my favorite videos you've done! Keep up the excellent work my friend.
Shoutout to this man being one of the only consistent gametubers. He's also old school at that, giving you full, long reviews, on one title or series. Takes me back to youtube before it got railed in the anus
My brother bought me the home version of Time Crisis for PS1 for Christmas 1998 and it is by far one of the best gifts I ever received. I had already sunk tons of money into the arcade version (and finally beaten it at one point), so this was a welcome relief to my budget! My cousin and I played it frequently and always got a laugh whenever Richard punched the first boss in the face after beating him, and adding our own commentary by saying, "Quiet You!" whenever he did so! Great times. I still maintain my old PS1 and a CRT television purely for the ability to play this game, but I would love a remastered version that allowed my to stop doing so, because lugging this HUGE television around whenever I move to a new home is getting to be downright painful. Thanks for the great video and stay safe out there!
Man, arcades were awesome. This and afterburner, house of the dead, Daytona.... sigh. I’ve gotta take my son and find a TC2 cabinet to show him how awesome a day of light guns and ice cream was.
Oh how we took everything for granted when we were kids...now it's so hard to find an arcade shop let alone one without new crappy money sucking bore-fests.

@@zacheryeckard3051 Check out Gun4IR and Sinden. Gun4IR, in my opinion, seems like the better buy as there is no software you need to run on your PC to use it, whereas the Sinden needs software running for EACH light gun. Gun4IR also can be modded into just about any light gun if you are willing to do it yourself or hire Raymond from RPEG Electronics to do it for you. For example, he modded an old Super Jolt + foot pedal to work flawlessly for light gun game emulation, it is pretty sweet. You should check out his channel for more footage. So, if you hook up two Sindens to your PC to play together with a friend, you will have to open two instances of the Sinden software, which opens a Camera app that uses the camera on the Sinden for aiming. Sinden is also heavily dependent on lighting, and it requires a white border to be added via the software on your screen, which can conflict with any borders a game may already have in place.
@@HeavyZeroDotoy I've heard good things about Aimtrak, but as far as the most accurate and easily set up, Gun4IR seems to be one of the best ways to go. An Aimtrak light gun can be modified to work with the Gun4IR system, too.

Same. Used to buy my movie tickets so I'd have an hour or two of down time before they started. If it wasn't to hang out in the bookstore and read manga, it was to play some Time Crisis/ Silent Scope/ House of the Dead at the arcade. You can kinda have the same experience near where I live in present day, over in Rome, Georgia.
I have always been more of house of the dead guy, but here in Indonesia Time Crisis is basically the twin-king of arcade rail shooter alongside HotD. you can basically expect either of the two being the main shooter cabinet in arcade places here, so I have profound respect to the series.
You might've missed this detail in Time Crisis 1. In the First Boss which is the Gold Ninja. Depending on where you land the 3rd hit against him will affect the defeat scene. If the final shot hits while he's jumping from column to column. The death scene will show him falling down from mid-air. If he is on the floor. He just dramatically drops on his back. Cool detail from an Arcade Game.😊
Awww man, the memories! When I was a young guy, my mom would take me with her when she went to her bowling league (casual thing for fun) and I remember begging her and all her friends for change so I could play Time crisis in the arcade inside the place. It got to the point that if there were other kids around, we would form into roving gangs looking for change. Whenever we got enough for a few more games, we would yell to each other "ACTION!", across the bowling alley. I wish there was a way to tell you were in the good old days, before you've left them.
Was able to go to an arcade last month and they had a time crisis 4 cabinet, had been years since I played and had a blast. This series is legendary and deserves some more games.
Light gun games should make a comeback. The Ghost Squad game (the one that had the full sized rifles with the selective fire and a trigger on the foregrip), House of the Dead, even the Terminator and Alien cabinets were amazing games. Even if they pulled an Arcade 1-Up and offered a more miniaturized cabinet like those that you can buy in Walmart
Damn, you made me actually remember Vampire Night and Ninja Assault! I had such a great time with those games as well. Personally Ghoul Panic was maybe my favorite light gun game in the arcade. But in the Time Crisis series alone, I spent so much money on credits on both Time Crisis 2 and Crisis Zone, to maybe buy an arcade machine for both of those game. Great series review my dude!
Some of my best childhood memories are with these games. I remember getting part 3 for Christmas when it came out and I haven’t felt that level of happiness since.
I remember going to an arcade and seeing Time Crisis 4 but way in the distance, I see another gun game Police 911 2 (The first game, I have only seen one machine of it. The 2nd game seems to be more common) Like Time Crisis, you can take cover and peek out. But instead of a pedal, YOU, the player would have to lean left right and move your body up and down to avoid getting hit. This game also had a time limit but felt slower paced in a way. The enemy bullets weren't that fast. There was a promotion system if you didn't get hit and didn't run out of time. Awarded with more time, lives (The highest level in that system gave you 100 lives) Only problem would be if someone not playing were to stand where the game would track the player's motions, things could get messy and could cost you a life and you'd get demoted all the way back down the bottom of that promotion list
I remember back in the day that the owner of the Arcade in my town will give you a badge saying "Living Legend" if you beated Time Crisis or the House of the Dead with one coin, plus putting your name in the Arcade's main hall... man, how i miss that Arcade, too bad it closed when consoles became a thing.
In the PS1 Special mode, it wasn't just the time you had to deal with, there were certain other conditions. For example in one stage you have to kill all fleeing orange soldiers to access the top final stage, in another you had to blow up a crane control room or not, failing to do so sending you straight to the final stage (yep, skipping to the lowest final stage for screwing up). The final stages all had good and bad endings, The top and bottom final stages were based on your ability to unload bullets into a fleeing transport and you had to do a certain ammount in a short space of time (3 clips if you are on the top and it is VERY tight in timing), the middle final stage was purely based on how long you took to clear the boss.
On rail shooters were so fun in the arcade. Time crisis, Jurrasic park 3, terminator salvation (i think it was called), and of course HOTD series. Virtua cop 1 and 2 on saturn were 2 of my favorite sega saturn games but you made good points
Anyone other than me remember the light gun shooter, Ghost Squad? The Wii port was great and had all kinds of crazy alternate modes, like making all the guns into water guns and the bad guys were decked out with scuba gear and vacationer clothes. What a stupid and fun game.
Oh I do remember that game too and played the arcade version of it. (Evolution, which unlocks everything like all weapons from get go) Did try the port too once on a friend's wii, and yes, they have alternate modes. Think the one I played was the one where everything is Ninja related.
I do remember too, getting it from a bargain bin for 10 dollars, and achieving level 99 at the end of a four month grind. The unlocks made it worth it, though. Especially the XMW21.
Time Crisis 4 used well-known US-based voice actors for the game unlike the other Time Crisis games where they employed Japan-based English voice actors.
Only ever played the arcade cabinets (not even sure which ones I was playing everytime) I just know it's on my bucket list of things I want in my man cave. A fully working time crisis cabinet with working foot pedal and light guns.
I know you won't reading this anymore but there's one spin off that Namco also made that's actually based on a manga and TV series called Cobra The Arcade. It combines everything from time crisis, scoring system of virtua cop, and boss rush from the house of the dead 2. It has a weapon system called psycho gun which actually a really cool gimmick. Also I think this is the first time crisis game that has upgrades and saving data mechanics to unlock some other modes in the game.
Time Crisis is probably the only Namco game that didn't make so much appearance in other Namco games (thus they only appear in Namco High, where Richard Miller make an appearance on that game, even it's just a short cameo) I mean c'mon Bandai Namco, they could make a Time Crisis song to Taiko (like they did to Ridge Racer Type 4), or even make Captain Rush as a cameo on a new Ace Combat game, that would be interestin' Also i can't wait for a new Time Crisis game (or at least a console ver. of TC5), c'mon Bandai Namco, you can do it
That intro... *chef's kiss* Also: YAAAAAAS Time Crisis retrospective! What a great series. I loved TC2 so much that I *still* have the official soundtrack. EDIT Oh, and how to play new lightgun games? VR. Get on it, NamcoBandai!
I put together a light gun setup last year during lockdown and I LOVE it. 43" Sony CRT, PSX, PS2, PS3, x2 GunCon 1&2, PS Move and we're good for Time Crisis/House of the Dead series. I also have a PC based Sinden light gun rig, better in some ways, not in others.
I was one of those kids that would spend an entire dollar so I could dual wield both guns at the arcade. Of course only when no one else was trying to play. Back then we had something called Arcade Etiquette. It was important
I was lucky enough to own Crisis Zone with the Guncon on PS2. I asked my Mom for a Namco game for Christmas thinking Namco Museum that I used to play on PS1 and she found Crisis Zone haha. Had a ton of fun playing it.

@Stefano Pavone Gonna need Time Crisis 6 with with up to four players where Rachael McPherson is trained by Alicia Winston at V.S.S.E. and teams up with Alicia, William Rush, and Alan Dunaway in a final takedown against the infamous Wild Dog, the man that kidnapped Rachel after Sherudo's death at the hands of Richard in the original game.

the fact that "don't come!" is one of the most used and best voice lines for these gun games from the 90s still tickles me even today
I still randomly say that all the time, with the same stiff inflection as the characters in the games
I had head canon that it was a bad Japanese localization of “go away” but that makes 0 sense
@@TheZackofSpades It's definately bad localization, also did I miss it or does he mention that Wild Dog (And Robert Baxter) in the first two games is voiced by the same guy who voices Chris Redfield in the OG Resident Evil? I believe he passed away a few years ago.
@@geedee1264 oh really??? Damn RIP

The transitions to the other games through the cover system was really cool
I agree 💯👍 with you
I can't believe you didn't mention the extra modes in Time Crisis 4:
First off there was the 'Complete Mission' which included extra levels where you played as Captain Rush, with standard FPS controls (the reason why the GunCon 3 has that awkward controller sticking out of it) though you still needed to aim and fire at enemies manually.
But after watching this video I might stick it on eBay, though it's definitely not in pristine condition lol
now i want to see this. Gman please!

Newer light guns? Do tell!

In the First Boss which is the Gold Ninja. Depending on where you land the 3rd hit against him will affect the defeat scene.

If he is on the floor. He just dramatically drops on his back.

Police 911 2 (The first game, I have only seen one machine of it. The 2nd game seems to be more common)
Like Time Crisis, you can take cover and peek out. But instead of a pedal, YOU, the player would have to lean left right and move your body up and down to avoid getting hit.
This game also had a time limit but felt slower paced in a way. The enemy bullets weren't that fast.
There was a promotion system if you didn't get hit and didn't run out of time. Awarded with more time, lives (The highest level in that system gave you 100 lives)
Only problem would be if someone not playing were to stand where the game would track the player's motions, things could get messy and could cost you a life and you'd get demoted all the way back down the bottom of that promotion list

Not much of a CoD fan, but I actually love the idea of that level. That took some genuine balls on the devs to make it.
Gosh, for some reason I remember the light gun based mode in Die Hard Trilogy for Playstation. It was the best level without a doubt.
I cant imagine playing this game. Just watching it gives me a pounding headache from the flashes every 2 seconds
It's not easy when you have sensitivity towards flashes.
Anyone other than me remember the light gun shooter, Ghost Squad?
The Wii port was great and had all kinds of crazy alternate modes, like making all the guns into water guns and the bad guys were decked out with scuba gear and vacationer clothes. What a stupid and fun game.

Ghost Squad is by far my favorite light gun game. Just a shame I only ever found a real cabinet once or twice.
