    As a professional artist, you're going to be faced with rejection from time to time. Sometimes things dont go the way you planned. Sometimes you get shot down. In this video I talk about how to handle that from an external and internal perspective. If you're applying to Blizzard, Riot, Sony, or EA, or any of these huge successful companies, you need to listen to this.

    Dude thanks for this. I've been looking for a new illustration job and I've had a ton of no responses and only 3 rejection letters. I've actually come to love rejection emails because it's better than getting nothing at all. Haha.

      I feel you... I was looking for an internship, wrote about 30 application e-mails and was really happy when I got some rejections at all... It's horrible for an applicant to just be ignored bc it makes you feel like you're not even worth a rejection.

    I think I've sent close to a 100 applications over the span of 2-3 years, lots of rejection letters and what not, finally my first full time job came from nowhere, literally it ended up in my spam box, c'mon man, who checks their spam?! but I did, and whoalla my first full time job, waited for me in my spam box without me even applying for the job, an act of higher power? absolutely, but regardless it would not happen if I wouldn't implement the things he talks in this video and work really hard.
    I still work there 6 months later and it's the coolest project ever, it's an indie game and I get to design everything and be creative and am much appreciated than I would in EA for example just another bolt in a huge machine.
    So yeah, stay strong and don't give up, because giving up is the goal killer.

    You should hold a contest on your Channel just to gauge where your audience is at. I would imagine a lot of your subs are aspiring artists. It would be cool to see if you had anyone really badass.

    Let's see in the past two years since I finished school I have been rejected by every single company that I have applied to including new upstart studios. but I keep on working on my stuff to get better but after awhile those rejections kept getting me down. because I was viewing it has they are rejecting me and not my work. so for a bit I completely stopped doing anything having to do with art mainly due to burnout and the what seemed like constant rejection. I even got turned down for a alpha tester position once or twice. until one day I received a letter from one of the studios that I applied to I mean like an actual handwritten letter which was strange in this time and age. it was from the art director who was the person who I had submitted my portfolio for review for the position. he noticed that I was a recent Grad at the time because it was listed on my resume. he gave me some tips and feedback on my portfolio and what I should change and do so that I can at least be put into consideration at some studios. that letter was enough to get me to pick up a pencil or stylus and start sketching and drawing again. and that was like March of 2017 which was earlier this year. so now I practice a little each day that I have off from my part time job. and I'm confident that by next fall that I will be ready to give the job hunting another go. also watching your videos and looking at your artwork gives me the drive I need to get through those "I wanna chuck it all moments." So I just want to thank you Trent for being an inspiration to me and a lot of other artist. BTW you are one of my top 12 artist.

      Thank you so much for sharing the story of your journey. When times are hard, just remember why you love doing it, and know that you will succeed as long as you hold on to the love of the craft. Your message moved me. Perhaps in the future I can work my way up from #12 on your list:)

    You know it's interesting how you take the "art" out of this video and use the advice on your personal life, relationships, and overall just for being happy. Thanks for this Trent! Opened my eyes.

    good info, idk why many digital artists use grey for their under painting, using a brown tone helps allow the colors to shine and not be dimmed down.

    Thanks a lot, I needed to hear much of this. Getting rejected certainly works as a big motivator to me. Sometimes I can take it a little too hard, but I always recover and put my mind to work more and be more open minded. The point is, i'm getting better, and that makes me very happy

      DarkSpectrum well, actually it's TV animation I wanted to get into. Which do you think is more competitive?

    • @Apothefox
      @Apothefox 7 лет назад +5

      They're both highly competitive. The market for TV animation is smaller however, there's less demand for artists and so there are less artists comitting to it. There's a bigger chance you'll get into a small studio that makes games.

    Dude this is so inspiring, I really love your words, the way that you approach some problems that this road have and the motivation that you give to all the people like me cause I'm just a simple beginner trying to start a wonderful (but not easy) trip to this art world and watching a lot of your videos just puts my mood pretty damn high! It makes me feel that I can reach anything with hard work, a lot of effort and love for it!. Sorry If my english is a little weird (is my second language lol).
    Thank you Trent I hope that you have a wonderful life.

    A professional artist needs to be able to adapt to the style of the project. If you can only work in one or two art styles, you prospects will be limited. As Trent said, each studio has its own needs, and it is important to present the work that would appeal to that studio.
    Example: Presenting Moe Anime works to a studio like Quantic Dream, would be a waste of their time and yours.

    Should your portfolio be consistent in style or should you show the whole range you can do so that they know you're able to adapt to style guidelines?

    • @Musashi246
      @Musashi246 7 лет назад +3

      80% in your own style. Then maybe 1-2 pages with a variety of styles.

    Love your work, I even bought your art book. My computer recently died and lost a lot of my stuff. I tried to re-download your book but for some reason I am not able to. Is it because you keep updating it? I would love to have this back.
