    I really do enjoy what's being said here. When it comes to me, I've started out doing anime fan art. But now I'm really studying the fundamentals to gain full mastery and understanding over them. Studying different methods and techniques that I can apply to my works. Building my visual library. Because I want to be as diverse as possible. I don't want a style to be because of my limitations, I want it to be because of my intentions on how I want to convey something. In a sense, I want to be really flexible, and as stated, be able to change up my style to suit what's needed. That's my goal at least.

    I've always dreamed of being a professional artist my whole life. I always thought i couldve been in the nfl, been a pro studio artist. What you said in this video really made me realize what that life would've been like. Never considered what it would be like creating art where my heart wasn't in it, as a career. I know when people ask me to draw them a logo or something that im not into, it becomes totally dreadful for me. What you're saying makes a lot of sense to me

    I have been working on this for 20 years and a large part of all this time I have spent fighting between drawing how I want,
    even without knowing how to do it because it takes time to discover it; and draw like the market, or the fashion of the moment asks me.
    Sometimes you head off because you just want to work and get paid for your work, and other times you just want to do it your way.
    I think the secret, if there is one, is the time. The time that one spends drawing, knowing the tools that you like the most,
    learning to do things in the best way, understanding yourself as an artist.
    Time and work, and I mean the simple fact of drawing all the time, are polishing the unique characteristics that exist in you.
    Then you have to know how to sell the product, but that's another matter...

    I think that if Mike Mignola wants to do more realistic or painted artwork, he should be able to do it. No matter what his fans and followers think. I've seen this a lot in the music scene as well. Bands that had such a specific style when they started out, and over time basically just matured. In doing that they disappointed a lot of existing fans. But also gained many new ones! And who are we to stand in the way of developing his skills? Maybe he's just not done yet?
    Other than that, I really enjoyed your video!

    Hey, as a follow up to this video have you thought about addressing what to do when your too similar to a very popular style and your competing with tons of other people who can basically do what you do. I see this on artstaion a lot. for example. If I'm making a mobile game that is generally a fantasy cartoon world there are SO many artist that have that style and can work faster and cheaper that deliver the same quality. How does one stand out? I think it's just as you said before in another video its supply and demand. Is your style popular? and how many other people do it? can you stand out from them? are you fast? are you cheap? are you local? I agree, Style is totally a double edge sword

  • @JonLauArt

    To be honest this is probably where I have the hardest time. I know I have good art but my style only really lends itself to a few studios. While I can do photobashed realism, I don’t have nearly as much fun with it as I do with stylized stuff. My style though does tend to lean heavily towards Blizzard/Riot with a mix of Magic: The Gathering thrown in there. That leaves me with like 4 possible studios I could work for, unless I wanna sell out man....

    Is it possible to develop my own brand do my styles but also work on other "styles" or techniques which could allow me to be employed in game studios? Propably not a good example but Mark Crilley is capable of drawing in many different styles. I want to make my own manga but I also love concept art and I want to make a living as a concept artist and also release my stories my brand on the side. Is that possible? There are also games and companies which use simillar style (Darksiders? - to some degree) to what I would consider close to my style and so in theory there shouldn't be a problem,..right?
    Also on the topic of styles I'd say that styles changes constantly. Not by much but as you get better or discover new things you might incorporate them into your core way of doing things which overall makes your style.

    Speaking of Horizon Zero Dawn, I'm curious about your opinion on Guerrilla Games studio since they came out of left field with HZD. Considering they were doing Killzone from 2004-2013.
    I know this would probably be more of an exception than rule, but it seems like a change in brand is more possible than it sounded in the video. Do you think style is more open today than it was before? And do you think with social media people have a better chance of having best of both worlds with style? Meaning they can post their personal work and style but also development whatever style the studio they want to work for with their portfolio. Maybe it's more possible with freelance than it is with in house work?

    Hey Trent, how about this: if your DESIGN is good, how much the style matters? I mean what if I want to work on my designs first, and make good drawings\paintings, not thinking too much about the style itself?

    • @JillValentine2013
      @JillValentine2013 6 лет назад

      I think style is part of design. Like, you have to design a character for a X genre story: A character should look depressive? B character should look prettier or ugly? The characters in general should have a cute style, a realistic style? Plus, if you want to be a concept artist you should have a flexible art style because you will have to use other artist's style in some works (like Diablo).
      My first language isn't english so I don't know if I translated my idea correctly.

    • @negie78000
      @negie78000 6 лет назад

      I'm not sure if this works for everyone, but the best way I build my confidence is that I make sure I always come back to studying my fundamentals to make sure they're up to par and that their straight. I'm always studying and building my visual library. And above all, joining an art community in search of critique for your works is probably one of the best and most effective ways in finding out what you lack, and finding out what you exceed at, which may build your confidence.

Question though, say you're working on a story consisting of multiple pieces (where time travel is also a thing) and you want to use different art styles to help distinguish those segments? I.E. comic book line art for modern day, a watercolor look for feudal Japan, art deco/retro for mid century, etc? Would that help or hinder an audience?

    Hi trent I know this isnt related to the video, but how do you apply the rules of depth and lighting at the same time? I know objects that are closer are darker and objects that are farther is lighter but would this still apply to a character and if so how do you apply this if the character already has values from the given light source?
    Example the characters arm is swinging behind them for a punch at us but the light source is in front of the character, so the arm should be lighter since its farther but its in shadow because the body is blocking the light from the arm. idk

  • @TheTitaniumBunker
    @TheTitaniumBunker 6 лет назад +1

    not sure I agree with you here.
    your mignola example you are conflating content with style, I think mignola could draw a detective comic and people would still read it.
    you present the argument that you can only either work in your own style, or work in an in house style and you have to make that decision early in your career.
    I don't think that's the case. after all if you take a AAA title like spiderman, why did marvel risk hiring Mcfarlane or romita to draw spiderman? after all , by your own argument, as it looked nothing like ditko's work on the first issue , they could have alienated the audience. your argument for world of warcraft seems to ignore the role of art director, and that art is iterative. and surely an Art directors main contribution to a project is to suggest and critique art and push for a coherent look
    let's look at a different angle, David Bowie created glam rock songs like "diamond dogs" and comedy songs like 'the laughing gnome'. the Beatles created rock and roll songs like 'please please me' and psychedelic songs like 'sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band'
    Picasso's work at 14 was vastly different to the work he is known for in his later life
    you seem to pitch that a style is a rut that you establish and woe betide you if you ever veer off course. but artists should grow and mature, their priorities should change as they gain more skills otherwise what's the point? you might was well make a bunch of prints and just sell them for the rest of your life

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  6 лет назад +3

      Dave Hingley believe me, I wish that what you are saying were true. The rules are very different if you’re independent vs seeking employment. I can guarantee you that if you do not paint in the Warcraft art style, you will not get a job on Warcraft. Comics are a bit different. Many times, executives don’t change the formula until a book is failing. Also, growth and style are separate things. It’s possible to be versatile enough to work in multiple styles, but it messes with your head, and it’s very hard to switch gears. Most artists can’t do that. You have some good points, but when you look at mainstream films, they usually rank if the stray from the previous films formula too much. Example: we made diablo 3 more mainstream/stylized and accessible and it pissed off the Diablo 2 audience, but gained a whole new audience. My point was more to be aware of what your audience wants. Too much change too quickly will make them feel betrayed by the expectations the previous one had set.

    Really informative and it does make sense to know where you want to work for, the market you are in what what you want to do!
    However what about situations when you don't have a specific company you want to go but you also don't want to freelance and brand yourself and still want to work in house? If I was to mass spam to different companies to just at least get a job, its not possible that i can chunk up specific styles for each companies within a short period of time, so what should I focus on then if that is a limitation?

    I've worked with someone who also worked on HZD.
    One of the reasons Loish was hired to do concept work on HZD, and I'd say the same reason why any studio would hire big artists that do not fit their IP or style, is to have a fresh angle, a different view. To have someone who is able to think outside of the typical 'game art' box is invaluable to prevent things from going stale or being repetitive.
    Kinda like in nature, whenever the gene-pool is small and limited. It's not healthy.
