Part of me is jealous of anyone getting to experience Tool songs for the first time.
Part of me pities them, that their life before this point did not have this music as part of its soundtrack.

I remember on MTV, this video was called Track 1 as opposed to Stinkfist...can't imagine why?....possibly my favorite Tool song...playing with the question (both literally and metaphysically) of alternatives to boredom...like a lot of Maynard's lyrics, there is the face value, and then there's the layers of symbolism that he leaves for you to discover, if you do choose. It's not mandatory to enjoy the experience, it's just there for those who care for such things. For thirty years, I have greatly appreciated those options...

This is my favorite song of all time, ever, by anyone. It’s one of those songs that means different things to different people. For me, I had a moment of revelation listening to this in a really dark time in my life, and the lyrics “How can this mean anything to me if I really don’t feel a thing at all” brought me a point of view I desperately needed.
I base my outlook on almost everything on that sentiment now. If it means nothing, if I don’t feel anything positive, I dismiss it from my life entirely. Which is one way of interpreting the meaning here. The pointless clinging to a negative need that hurts you, and the realization to let that go for yourself.

  • @KurNorock
    @KurNorock Год назад +11

The reason the drums stand out so much is because while most bands highlight the vocals, Tool always just treated the vocals as just another instrument in the band. That can make it difficult to hear Maynard sometimes, but it really highlights the skill of the rest of the band.

I met Danny Carey at a Meshuggah concert. Listen to Bleed by Meshuggah. The drumming is incredible. Even Danny Carey's jaw was on the floor. Tomas Hakke is by no means better than Danny, but the difficulty of the drums in that song is crazy. The guitarist created the drum part on a computer, and it took Tomas almost 9 months to learn it.

This was the first Tool song I heard, I loved it, had absolutely no idea what they were talking about, or even the title, lol, till my grown son explained it to me. Still love it, but definitely changed what I thought it was about. Yes, I'm old, but been listening to metal since the 70s, and the sound of this does it.

Somebody probably already said this, but Danny gets more of a bongo/tom sound because he has no snares on his snare. That's his signature sound

This one's a banger. It was one of their most conventional song structures, verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. Made it great for radio. But it still showcases very distinctive Tool elements. The switch from very clean to scream vocals, the time signature change from verse to chorus, prominent/audible bass, and the added 9th when they want a pretty chord. Legendary song and legendary band. The mtv video is a work of art in its own right.

Great Tool song and one of the best rock songs of the 90s
I like the mix of grungy downtuned guitars in maybe a minor key and Maynard’s singing in a major key… gives it a very unsettling feel
    Reflection please ❤

When I saw that at the concert in 2019 they ended the show with this song and they changed it up. They made the song longer. This was also the time when they allowed us to record on our phones so i keep going back to my stinkfist live video on my phone.

Aenima was my first experience with Tool in 96 I was 14. It’s a far more digestible album in terms of song length and structure. It’s still my favorite. Now that I’m older I dig all their stuff but the long songs couldn’t keep my attention as a youth so it was aenima and A Perfect Circle for me back then. Thoroughly enjoying listening to them again for the first time with you. Keep it up.

ÆNIMA is my favorite Tool album. It combines their cerebral composition style with the raw sound from Undertow. I feel it's their perfect in between. Every Tool album is perfect in some ways but this is the one I will always connect more spiritually. Hands down.

If you like songs where the drummer just beats the hell out of the drums, go No one knows by Queens of the Stone age. Dave Grohl goes absolutely ham on the drums, good film clip as well shows off just how hard he's going, even during the lower parts of the song.

The TooL reactions are starting to go the way of how the Harry Mack reactions started. You become aware of the fact that you want to listen to and experience all of these as quickly as you can so that you can get them into your rotation and listen to them on your own....so the videos are coming out rapid fire....and I'm here for it just like I was for the Harry Mack collection. :D

Love your reacts. Basic song structure is Intro-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus-Outro or ring out. Drums and bass are referred to as the rhythm section as they usually set the foundation for the time of a song. Also, usually what you're liking is the arrangement as well as where they are setting in the mix. (the frequencies they are in as well as how forward placed or loud they are in the final version of the song)For example, some times people complain Maynard is sometimes too low in the mix. Usually when you say note, you're meaning key. Just some music jargon for ya. Keep doing you!

To think I was 15 years old in 1996 when this was released and I heard the album "Ænima" for the first time with friends, starting off with this one, following with "Eulogy", "H", "Forty-six & Two", "Hooker...", "Ænema", "Pushit" AND "Third Eye" on the SAME ALBUM! My mind was properly blown - and still is!
