Couple things. One, the guy who actually picked up the hand, got it back to the soldier and they were able to successfully reattach it. That guy's name? Pfc. Hand. They changed it to another on the helmet because people would think it was an easter egg or joke, truth is stranger than fiction. For example.
My favorite story that came out of this was Durant. He was in Gary Gordon's hometown during his MOH ceremony/memorial and someone told him they were looking forward to his speech, which he wasn't aware of. He stopped at the local library to get some ideas and checked some books out. He opened the first book, on the Medal of Honor and saw the last person to check it out about 20 years ago. Young Gary Gordon.

Let's see here, Legolas is Blackburn, Lucius Malfoy is Captain Steele, Sergeant Horvath is Lieutenant Colonel McKnight, Bane is Twombley Hector of Troy is Hoot, Obi-Wan Kenobi is Grimes, Mr. Fantastic is Beale, Phil Dumphy is Wilkinson...
One thing I love about this movie is that many of the pilots used in this film actually participated in the actual battle. The Little Bird pilot who ran for the Delta Operator, a guy named Keith Jones, recreated his actual rescue of Sergeant Dan Busch from the Super 6-1 crash site.

I read the book and there are alot of things not shown in the movie. The Rangers and Delta were doing successful nighttime raids using NightVision Googles and didn't fire a shot before the Black Hawk Down incident.A Pakistani team that was part of the UN were slaughtered before this happened and they wanted to pull their troops out and that's why in the movie, there was tension with the Pakistanis. The Rangers and Delta guys were spread out in homes before they were rescued. The Delta guys told the Rangers to run down the street as if your head was on fire. The Delta guy that was blown in half, well he initially survived and later died in a VA hospital in Germany.Delta, Shugart and Gordon received the Medal Of Honor posthumously. And,oh yea, there are pictures and video of the incident.

Man, I found your channel randomly searching for this movie's reactions because, barely anyone does it, and wow, great stuff!
It was such a juxtaposition to see you so stoic watching this movie, almost indifferent, then to go to your outro speech and watch you hold back tears and get extremely sentimental, was very..... I don't know the word I'm looking for, but was certainly powerful to watch.
Also, I greatly respect and share your views on war and everything that surrounds it. Its so refreshing to hear someone not just immediately take a hard stance on the subject, as if they have all the answers. Seeing you basically say, "Yeah, war sucks and is terrible, but I'm just one person and don't have all the answers, and while I don't agree/disagree with every single war or reason for war, there are just too many factors and complicated issues that make it much bigger than I". I could've completely mistaken your input on the matter, but that's what I got out of it (partially, I know you talked more on it and other related topics). But yeah, basically, it was just cool to see someone who understands you don't have to take a black or white stance on every single subject/matter. You can have a mixed opinion.
    Cheers!

I watched it at the movie theater and I stayed in shock for about an hour and a half after it ended... the scene where you see the troops running on one street and the crowd on the parallel one is terrifying, even more when you think about that there is no clear enemy, is not an opposing force or something like, is regular people, mixed with innocent residents... just shocking.

My major was English but my concentration was Film & Media Studies - I originally thought I was going to become a film critic but then ended up switching to education and became an English teacher. It was pretty thought-provoking examining how different films depict conflict and war to try and make one side seem more or less sympathetic, and also to overall show it as a good or bad thing, and how this has evolved over time. We also watched some much older movies such as All Quiet on the Western From, Patton, and Sergeant York, and others, for contrast.

Since you mentioned you mainly had read books, I'm surprised you haven't read the book this film is based off of. "Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War" is a thoroughly well researched book, about the incident during the Somalia peace keeping and humanitarian operation, that went on there during the early 1990s. Mark Bowden is a really good author and also made the book "Killing Pablo: The Hunt for the World's Greatest Outlaw", which he got the idea while researching the Black Hawk Down incident. That book is about Pablo Escobar and the Colombian governments actions while attempting to find and arrest Escobar, and about possible US involvement.

Feel like what distinguishes this war movie from others is that this film simply presents the pure chaotic, visceral experience of what war is.
A character in the movie even says
“Once that first bullet flies past your head” all other considerations and arguments go right out the window.
And any political implications and social commentary is basically sidelined as the movie just drops its audience right into the middle of a warzone.
The style of this movie plays right into the director’s strengths and style.
Emphasis on visual storytelling over characters and dialogue.
The director being Ridley Scott whose other film “Alien” you already watched here.
Great all American director for you to look into.
    David Lynch
Some great films of his to check out

A strong Marine force had this territory secured, but was withdrawn. After the massacres started, this rather small force of Deltas and Rangers were sent in, but the Clinton Administration didn't give them the adequate support the military had asked for because he didn't want to be seen as a war-president during re-election time. The generals were pressured to get this job done and over with quickly. This opportunity to snag Aidid's people was an almost spur of the moment thing, and they didn't expect it to last so long so the UN (Pakistanis and Canadians) weren't informed until it al went SNAFU.

    • @marlinbially9628

Clinton was worried about re-election in Oct '93? He was just elected Nov'92 and sworn in Jan 93. Speaking of the election why does the loser and lame duck Bush sr. start this whole mess in Dec '92 on his way out the door? Couldn't have anything to do with Conoco Oils agreements made with the previous, US backed dictator Barre that was overthrown by Aidid and others who was against western exploitation of Somalian natural resources? Also the fact the whole famine was a result of decades of Cold War US and Soviet meddling in Ethiopia and Somalia in the first place. And why is Aidid, the former Somalia Ambassador to India, former Security Chief, and General of the Somalia Military who was selected to study advanced post graduate military science at the Frunze Military Academy in the Soviet Union, referred to as a "Warlord" like some local gang leader while Mahdi, some unelected pro US businessman with little or no local support is declared President by Egypt Saudi Arabia and Italy? The idea that we invaded Somalia to protect famine relief is laughable. The soviet union was collapsing and Bush wanted to fill any resulting power vacuum in the area with pro US puppets like Mahdi.

I had just gone to Kenya the summer before this happened to help in a Ugandan refugee camp so I was very aware of this story. There was SO much murder in that region that year or two! I respect what Ridley Scott brings to the table in this film. He is one of my favorite film directors of all time. With that said, I was not a fan of this film. I see why people like it. The action is good, the directing is good, the story is interesting, and it hits hard in the feels. However, it just wasn't for me. I do not hold it against people for doing so, just not for me.

@@ryanbuckley5529 are you on drugs or something? Wtf are you even talking about? I honestly have no clue. How is it "disrespectful?" And why the fudge would "respecting" the military be a prerequisite for a film being good? If it's realistic it's realistic. If it's well-acted, well-shot, well-directed, entertaining, emotional, intense... then it's probably a good movie. Being "respectful" to the military is not part of the equation, but that said there was nothing disrespectful about the end of Zero Dark Thirty. Where are you from anyway? North Korea? I'm morbidly curious to know what you are even talking about but I doubt I'll come back here to find out because you sound nuts. I've got plenty of friends and family in the military, too, btw. @@nooneofconsequence1251 right, there’s nothing wrong making a military movie and completely disrespecting the military. Watch the multiple veterans talk and explain why it’s so disrespectful. If you have people telling you different they don’t know a damn thing about EOD or how any of that works, that’s what the movie is supposed to be about, and every part of it is wrong, and if you argue that then you clearly have no idea... Just go and watch vets talk about it and explain everything.

@@ryanbuckley5529 I just did a google search trying to find something about ZDT being "disrespectful"... didn't come up with a single hit that had that word. I found a lot of articles about the accuracy of the film's final scene (considered extremely high), and the accuracy of the scenes leading up to it (debatable and opinions vary), a lot of debate about how the film depicts torture (was it shown in a positive light? in a negative one? was it accurate or not?), a bunch of political articles, and several that talk about how the film glorifies (not disrespects) the team that took out bin Laden, including quote by vets... so... again... zero clue what you're talking about.
I always have notifications turned off on RUclips to protect my sanity so probably won't see your reply, but, maybe you should look up some articles yourself and see some different opinions. The ones you have seem.... novel... to say the least. Cheers and have a good day.

Decisions are made to get into these conflicts by our so-called "leaders," but those leaders WORK FOR US. At least they're supposed to. With respect, How is it that you don't know anything about this? You say you had three channels. Did you not watch the news? The film of the bodies being mutilated and dragged around was all over the news. And I think since you've been doing this for a little bit now you can do away with your speech about never watching any movies because your viewers that are subscribed to you have to listen to it every single time. I guess you're trying to make sure we know you are a very sheltered man. Most reactors also give little bit longer movies more time than just 30 minutes. I don't know why you call this US Movies. There are so many movies that use British Australian Irish United Kingdom Scottish actors this was directed by Ridley Scott who is English. Also you made a statement about this movie being 2 and a half hours long. Most of the classic big blockbusters movies are 3 to almost 4 hours long.
