For anyone that maintains that the US should "do something about world hunger", they need to see THIS movie to understand what it will really cost to get to those people.
Not saying it should or shouldn't be done, just that they're aware of what the costs are.

Watched the documentary on the real story...tom Sizemore character was even more bad ass in real life...apparently casually strolled down the street while taking insane amounts of fire to call out a target and calmly walked back to the humvee and radioed it in. Was shot like 4 times that day and never left his men. Real G shit.

Because the real McKnight was like that.
He'd seen good soldiers take cover and get cut down anyway and seen "sloppy" soldiers walk through a hail of gunfire unscathed and figured there was so much random chance involved in getting hit why was he even trying... that if it was his time to go there wasn't anything to do about it.

Saw this film many years ago back in California. It was sometimes hard to watch but I would give this film 5 stars. Somalia, like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen and many other war torn countries will always remain on the travel advisory lists of many countries.

Same here; I actually saw this shortly after 9/11. Usually, my wife likes to go to these types of films (SPR for example) but, she was 'not of a mind'; I went alone and caught an early showing in a not too crowded theater. I found the film hard to watch, sobering and very moving. It's become one of my favorites=if I catch it playing on Cable I watch it, no matter that I have it in my BlueRay collection.

Eric Bana's character was created based on three soldiers who fought in the Dish. He tried his best to merge the three attitudes into an individual character, and while he was a bit... Ramboish... he did a stellar job with the material he was given. The character was made due to cinematic time constraints.

28:33 - They weren't retreating. The American troops' job was to get their wounded and get out of there as quickly as possible. There was also lots of confusion & miscommunication at the time which is why the UN Pakistani armored vehicles suddenly took off (the American troops were supposed to hop on top of them for transport and protection). The run back to the stadium was nicknamed "The Mogadishu Mile".
28:40 - Yes and No. Many Somali citizens were just trying to get to safety. However, Aidid was a good propagandist. He successfully convinced the starving Somali population the UN and U.S. were there to subjugate them which is why many had a knee-jerk reaction of being hostile towards American troops.

Government Bureaucracy is so annoying " After 6 weeks Washington was growing impatient " " Washington decided it was too high profile to deploy AC-130 gunships and larger armored vehicles " , literally both decisions that lead to there being as many casualties as there were, despite them being rather low. Who knows how the operation could have gone not only if they had more time for planing, staging and getting the best intel but also if they had AC-130's and other armor you can't tell me there would still have been 18 American casualties.

I've had the opportunity to meet Gen. Garrison on a couple of occasions. He used to have morning coffee with my Grandfather from time to time. He always seemed like a decent man to me. I think they just needed someone to blame for how things turned out. I always like to point out on reactions to this film, that the situation in Somalia is exceedingly complex, and there was little chance soldiers were going to fix it. But also that doesn't detract in the slightest from the bravery and distinguished service of those soldiers. They did their job, and did it well.

Served 4yrs. To answer your question. We make it a point to not shoot non combatants. Even if they have weapons or marching with the militia. Fired when fired upon is usually the rule of thumb. As much as the media loves to showcase when civilians do get caught in the war, we try not to involve them at all costs. There's quite a few rules of engagement that you'll go over in a briefing before you head out. War has rules. Even if the other side doesn't follow the same

I love this film, but you can't fit everything into a 2 hour movie. What's really cool to me is that a number of the pilots were a part of the real mission as were a few of the Ranger extras. Keith Jones, who flew Star 4-1 both in the movie and in real life, plays himself and recreated his rescue of Delta Sergeant Dan Busch from the 6-1 crash site. One thing thats missing is that there were really 3 Delta snipers on board Super 6-2- Gary Gordon, Randy Shugart and Brad Halling. Brad was actually manning the left side minigun after one of the crew chiefs was shot. They provided minigun cover to Randy and Gary while they tended to the crew of Super 6-4. They all survived the crash and defended it until the D-Boys showed up. They were taken to the tail of the aircraft to wait and hide while the snipers pulled Mike Durant out. Putting him away from the rest of the crew probably is what saved his life. He was hit in the face with the severed arm of one his friends, not a rifle butt.

In spite of the cine marvels, this moovie is so America-centred that it becomes racist.I will argue here why I say that:
    1. Typical for Westerners (especially Americans) to look at *the world as a tourist attraction. The people are unimportant,* only humans are & humans here used to mean Europeans, but somehow the U.S: military managed to make African Americans equally arropgant when they serve in the 3rd world.
    2. Somali proverb: *Baboon tells his brother: Your ass is red.* I learned this proverb from a Somali friend I met in Moscow in 1991. It acknowledges that it is easier to see the others' asses than our own. As an extra it underlines the fact that we need others to tell us what we can't see, provided we trust them. When have you seen a drunk uncle aware of his drunkness?
    3. We are all racists (accumulation of prejudices, that are in depth are mere defence mechanisms, unless we try hard to be aware about them. Is any of us aware when we act racist?
