  • When I was in the 1st grade, I was so confused by the name Frito-Lay. The purpose of this video is to straighten everything out for anyone who has shared that same confusion by talking about the formation and size of this business.

    Here in Mexico they acquired the sabritas brand, which at the time was the second largest chips company just under another one called Barcel. Then they rebranded everything (churrumais, pizzerolas, quesabritas) and started selling their products under the sabritas and not lays name here. They also introduced a really cool thing to boost sales called tazos, they where basically slammers but they came in the sabritas (lays), Cheetos, ruffles and Doritos bags and they where really fun to collect.

    Can we get one on Yum Brands and why Pepsico spun them off?

    • @hotwax9376
      @hotwax9376 5 лет назад +3

      @Tiberian Fiend I'd love to see that. While I don't know for sure, I suspect the reason PepsiCo divested itself of Yum had to do with competition in the fountain business. Because they owned three major fast food chains (Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut), Coca Cola ran trade advertisements which claimed that serving Pepsi products was tantamount to bankrolling the competition. Pepsi even sued Coke on at least two occasions alleging unfair competition in its campaign for fountain deals. Eventually, PepsiCo realized that their continuing ownership of the three chains was ultimately hurting its ability to grow its market share and sold it off.
      Since then, PepsiCo has used FritoLay to win fountain deals, with some success. Two years ago the Washington Redskins ended a longtime partnership with Coke to serve Pepsi products at their home games, citing FritoLay as a primary reason. A few years before that Buffalo Wild Wings switched from Coke to Pepsi for the same reason, and the NBA chose Pepsi as its official soft drink sponsor on FritoLay's strength as well. Arby's, which switched from Pepsi to Coke last year, had given its previous contract to Pepsi in the hopes of serving FritoLay products, but that never seemed to materialize. However, Pepsi's overall market share in the fountain business is slightly smaller today than it was before spinning off Yum due to the explosive growth of fast casual chains, an overwhelming majority of which serve Coke products.

      @@TiberianFiend Which ones? Most Burger King franchises in my region have Coke Freestyle fountains, and I think some Wendy's franchises do too. However, I have yet to see one at McDonald's. One thing I appreciate about Burger King is that the franchises around me not only have a Freestyle fountain inside the dining room, but also at the drive thru window, so you can get many of the same flavor combinations without having to go inside (which is nice if you're on a time crunch).
      Pepsi does in fact have a counter fountain called Pepsi Spire, but I have yet to see one in person. I understand there's a Dairy Queen about 50 miles from me that has one, but the closest Dairy Queen to my house has Coke products, and yes, they also have a Freestyle fountain.
      Part of the reason why Coke holds a majority of the US fountain market is due to the fact that Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, and Subway all have Coke products. (Interestingly enough, Subway also sells FritoLay products, yet they haven't had Pepsi products here in the States since circa 2004.) McDonald's in particular is a big one, because they sell more fountain drinks than just about anyone else. In fact, they serve so much Coke that the concentrate is delivered to the franchises in steel tanks, while most others buy it prepackaged.
