  • Disney just bought a bunch of assets from Fox in a $71 billion deal. This marks their largest acquisition in a long line of large acquisitions. This video talks about that deal, looks at some of their significant acquisitions from the past 25 years, and examines how big Disney currently is. My guess is that it's bigger than you know.

      *Merchandising!*
You can walk into a Wal-mart, Costco, Target, and hundreds more stores, and you can walk out with a crap ton of Disney merch that appeals to both children and adults.
I bought my daughter a minnie mouse teddy for her first christmas a few years back, and now her eyes shine whenever she sees anything with that mouse wearing a bow.
And if I wanted to spoil her, I could EASILY fill every aspect of her life with Minnie Mouse, but I try to keep a good balance lol

They also own two Broadway production companies and several theaters (live stage acting) on Broadway in NYC itself. That is in addition to radio stations, record labels, and even their own money (Disney dollars). At various times several different major league sports teams as well. If it is related to entertainment even tangentially, they likely hold some sort of interest in some business in that industry.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a Disney owned brothel. That is how extensive their holdings go.

In case of the FOX acquisition, it’s because the alternative would’ve been worse. Comcast could’ve bought Fox, which would make them even more powerful than Disney is now.
Why? Because they have a major network, a big movie studio, and the second largest cable company in the world.
Imagine the power a company with all that assets would have in a nation where net neutrality doesn’t exist anymore... One big four channel controlling the programming of another big four channel on a cable service they own themselves. The same thing would go for a streaming service. It would give them one of (if not the) biggest movie catalogue in the world, considering the age of both FOX and Universal, and they would be free to push it onto their customers by slowing down the connection to other services.
Yes, Disney is the biggest content owner, but at least they are not in control over the way their channels and services are distributed.

And Universal also has an entire Marvel themed section of Islands of Adventure in Orlando, which they just renovated certain rides and aesthetics in. I honestly think that eventually they'll get tired of paying royalties to the Mouse for that, and will refurbish the entire section of the park, but that would be a huge investment in terms of time and money (they'd have to close one of their most popular sections of one of their most popular parks for at least several years to do the refurbishment, and that in and of itself means lost profits), and they're not guaranteed to as much as break even on the cost of refurbishment because a refined section of the park could potentially not be as popular as it was previously. So at that point, it may be cheaper for Universal to just pay the royalties as opposed to refurbishing a section of the park, but I don't know what numbers they're working with.

This is mainly because of its “family friendly” imagery which is why the company has never released something like Daredevil or Pulp fiction under the Disney banner, it wouldn’t be financially viable and would ruin this image.
But I wonder, are they going to include films like Pulp fiction and shows like daredevil on a service who’s name is best associated with Princess and fairy tales?

Funny little story - Back in university, I think in 2018 or 2019, I was in this history class that taught about the Progressive Era, a.k.a The Golden Era stretching from the 1880s to around 1920 & later - which covered post-Civil War era America as well as the American industrial revolution and, most important to this comment, the rise of big business and monopolies. The major assignment of that class, like others, was that we had to write a 10+ page paper covering a topic important / connected to the classes' subject. I think my first idea that came to mind almost immediately was that I wanted to write a compare & contrast paper discussing how Disney had become a modern-day monopoly in the entertainment industry through it's frequent purchases of various properties and studios while simultaneously doing what they can to ensure their ownerships of such were to never run out or turn over to the public domain (I would also use examples found with past monopolies like Carnegie and Rockefeller in regards to practices & such for comparison.)
In the end, when I submitted my idea to the professor, he politely told me that while such a topic would make for a fascinating paper, the syllabus of the class required a straight-forward, research & discuss type of paper topic for the class (or something like that, I can't really remember that well.) Instead of that topic, I ultimately ended up writing a paper discussing the history of the medicinal field with a special highlight on the advent, rise and eventual crisis / effect of the use of opioids and other such narcotics during the time., per his suggestion.
I wish I had argued a bit more on my original topic because I feel, especially today, that Disney has grown to a point where they truly are / do have a monopoly on the entertainment industry as well as a heavy influence in other areas both nationally and internationally - and that, overall, is not a very good thing.

Disney is actually closer to being a monopoly than Apple is.

In my opinion, everyone who is oh so up about "evil empire Disney" and their supposed monopoly, is either ignorant or a hypocrite.
Disney isn't even close to achieving an entertainment monopoly, if something like that is even possible. For some reason Disney always gets the critical eye, while so much more powerful companies are doing so much more and scarier damage. Wanna bet you are reading this comment on an Apple, Google or Microsoft related product, because of course you do! And let me guess, you bought it via Amazon! A company that singlehandedly destroys small businesses and bullies startups until they allow to be taken over.
What's with cable companies, the true devils in the business world. Not only are AT&T and Comcast much more powerfull, they also use their power to lobby the Government in order to monopolize the entire Internet. But the Disney-Fox merger scares you? Are you aware that Disney only bought Fox because Fox was closing down their film departement anyway? The only other interested buyer was Comcast. FUCKING COMCAST!!! Would you have preferred that?
And heck, that's just tech companies. What's with Big Oil? That's where the real nightmares start. What's with transportation? What's with banks, who create inflations like every other year now. Private education just straight up cripples millions of people with debt. And did you know that almost all glasses come from one manufacturer, explaining why they are so expensive? Same for diamonds, which is not just a monopoly, but a freakin mafia! And don't even get me started on Pharma! When Disney creates an Opioid Crisis and then profits by combating opioid addiction, THEN you can come to me with "evil Disney monopoly".
THAT is scary stuff and should be much more of an interest to the government. Oh, but Disney scares you, because... they can make a lot of movies now... uuuh!
Think of them what you want, but Disney is playing capitalism as it is meant to be played, the only thing that sets them apart from its rivals is that they frickin rule at it. And look, I am not a big fan of capitalism either, but hate the game, not the player.
All the companies I just mentioned make me worried and scared. But Disney didn't gain power or is using its power through lobbying and corrupting the government, poisening the environment, running sweatshops, bullying other companies, scamming customers, excersizing overreaching control over our society or blocking new competion from emerging.
Disney is where it is, because it is focusing on quality first. They always did. Even if it makes me sound like a Disney mouthpiece, and I am sure some will claim I am secretely Bob Iger in disguise, but I believe if some entertainment company has to be this big and powerful, then I am glad it's Disney.

its adorable that you think that governments are still powerful enough to break up a company like Disney if it gains monopoly status. its an international media company U.S. or EU law cant hold sway over something like that. and even if an international committee came together to try and break it up, all Disney would have to do is stop producing and hide out for maybe a year, and there would be riots in the streets demanding governments to allow Disney to return. the only way a democratically elected government would be capable of fighting a media company is if the government controlled the flow of information to the people preventing political backlash. which is, in this internet age, completely impossible. politicians care the most about getting re-elected, no way that happens if they pick a fight with a mass media company. its an unwinnable fight for them. breaking up Disney just cant feasibly happen in this modern age.

  • @redique
    @redique 5 лет назад

I honestly dont mind, and yes as you can see I am a huge Disney fan but I do also enjoy a lot of other content too and getting a company be this monstrous in size just makes other studios make better movies to actually be able to compete which to me is win win for everyone. This is exactly why I am so looking forward to Netflix and Disney+ rivalry because we are just gonna be getting amazing content for both. We know this is how it works because this already happened at the parks. Disney was 100% the absolute nominator for Theme Park entertainment (I mean they still pretty much are but a little less so), but universal comes along and creates a new addition that rivals even the best creations that Disney has ever made, and it paid off, not only for Universal but for Disney too. It increased visitors to the Orlando area so people also went to Disney to go visit the world of harry potter and it also added tremendous growth to universal as people who only went to Disney now considered going to Universal. With this Universal has more then wakened a sleeping beast because nothing before Harry Potter compared to it and now almost everything Disney is doing is almost a direct compensation to Harry Potter and even when utilizing less popular IP, they manage to create a better product then universal delivered with Harry Potter (Directly referencing Pandora, this land is so incredible that the attractions are better than those that universal offers with HP, despite Avatar being kinda meh and HP being a mega-phenomenon). So Disney has and is still playing their move and I think very soon Universal will be playing theirs, they need to compete with Star Wars land and there have been some pretty big hints for an entirely new Theme Park. So if this is exactly what happens with movies and streaming content, I absolutely cannot wait.

Disney might pull out an EA move. Time will only tell. This whole aqusition could be a good thing or a bad thing. Less competition means higher prices, decline in quality, and decline of innovation.
Free market competitive capitalism promote these 3 important keys. Acquisition and merger will only lead to monopoly which the great Teddy warned us about. He would consider mergers if there are some conditions or factors though. But I dont think he would allow this kind of mergers and acquisitions that are happening today. Corporations are already considered people from the SC ruling of Citizens United vs FTC, and they buy our politicians, from public servants to private servants. More money to them is = to more power to buy politicians and implant their employees in these government agencies (regulatory capture) i.e. Scott Pruitt an Exon Mobile employee, Ajit Pai an AT&T employee, Nikki Haley a Boeing employee, Betsy Devo an AMWAY owner and the sister of the owner of Blackwater, a mercenary corporation. And I think the new UN ambassador/secretary is tied to a company.
