- We all know Crayola for their crayons and art supplies, but you may be shocked to hear that's not how they started. They existed for years before ever producing a single crayon. This video talks about how they started and transitioned into the company we know today.
Also, how do you say crayon?

The only thing cooler for a kid than a 64 pack crayola is the scented Mr sketch markers.
They were banned at my school people kids were sniffing them
Yes.
96 pack
True tbh
I have mr sketch scented markers and a 96 pack of crayolas lol
Pulling out a 64 pack in class was a bigger flex than AirPods
👌
Drew Dapps It wasn’t as as big as pulling out a pack of their scented crayons when they first came out in 1994. Everybody had to have one. I was in the first grade at the time, and really wanted a pack, and finally got one in my Easter basket in 1995... only for one of the other kids to steal them out of my desk shortly after we got back from break. I knew who did it, but I didn’t have any proof.
Drew Dapps Indeed😂
Yeah no kidding. The kid with the most colors was royalty
@@TBustah at that point, you take matters into your own hands.
I once had a metallic crayola crayon and I value it as my most prized crayon
Dankrose RUclips show I have a pack of them
And then we all realized that the “metallic” ones kinda just looked like shiny poo XD

i remember thinking those were so cool until I realized that you couldn't replicate how cool the crayon looked on the paper you were drawing on
Now those were crayons worth stealing from 1st grade art class :)
If a teacher ever gave me crayons that weren’t Crayola I would look at them with genuine disgust

I pronounced crayons as "Crans" in one of my videos and got freaking annihilated in the comments. I can sympathize with you Company Mayon.
Oh I've learned that if there's multiple ways to say a word the comments will go crazy with it. Thought I'd get a head start by including that section about it this time.
@@companyman114 Should have opened with that haha

Its not pronounced crans? RIP me then I've been saying it like that forever.
You were top dog in elementary if you had Crayola especially 64 with dandelion yellow
Rip dandelion
That was gods gift
* draws a dandelion * yes, yes, that is correct.
In school we had to do a persuasive piece on why crayola should/n't keep dandelion yellow. (I said keep it, they already have a million blues, come on)
And the sharpener
I get mad when someone gives me crazy art crayons
ok buddy
JakeyStar 2020! Shut up you crazy art user disgusting
The Legit Fanboy r/woooosh

The markers don't fit together so you can't make big sticks with them
Those kids that had 120 packs with a built in pencil sharpeners were the popular ones.

Right I think privileged is the better word 😂
I had one and when I had it I would protect them from legit anything
I remember a few years ago, I saw Crayola branded juice drinks for kids on the clearance shelves at supermarkets. I immediately imagined the taste of crayons in the juice, which I imagine is the reaction most people had, causing them to be hugely unpopular and almost immediately end up on clearance. It's ironic that their amazing success in art supplies actually self sabotages their attempts to enter other markets.
That tends to happen with a lot of brands. I think Campbell called their spaghetti sauce a Campbell product until they noticed people taking the same issue. They thought it was "soupy" even though in blind taste tests it wasn't. I think the brand they call it is "prego" or something now?
My mom once bought a Crayola branded ketchup. It was a set of brightly colored blue, green, yellow and red ketchup. It tasted bad.
I begged my mom for them as a kid and they really did taste like crayons
their popsicles are pretty good though lol
They also had their own video game that was called Crayola Scoot. It was pretty much a crappy knock off of Splatoon. Crayola would be better off sticking art supplies.
For me, a new box of crayons was the best part of starting elementary school each year. It always upset me when other kids would break theirs in two pieces. Also, that builtin sharpener never worked well. Anyone old enough to remember "manila" paper in school?
Yes the Brown one
Where are you from?
Because where I'm from, Manila paper is still a common material used by students

I thought everybody with the 64 pack at school was rich lmao elementary school was crazy
My mom sure acted like it cost a leg and an arm.
Personal trainers aren't cheap though so you're not that far off.
My family wasn't rich, but man did I feel like a rich kid in elementary being the only one with the 64 pack... everyone else struggling around with terrible (smaller-set) RoseArt crayons.
I got a 64 pack of Crayola crayons for Christmas when I was first grade and brought them to school to show all my classmates.

Also I had no idea about hallmark
Back in 1986 when I was in the first grade the teacher gave us each a pack of "fluorescent" Crayola crayons. We were in awe of these magical gifts of art creation.
You forgot to mention the origin of the term "crayola" which, apparently, is a brand name for the crayons. The brand name was created from the terms: "craie" which means chalk and "oleaginous" which means oily.
1:04 I am from Germany and i guess we would have something same for pencils which would be "Faber-Castell" and i had kind of same experience as Kid, that i loved my colored pens box. But i have to say that they are kind of premium, i mean they usually sell there pencils in fancy metal boxes, which adds a lot of value. The quality is high, you will never see them break when you sharpen them and they produce a lot of art related products which seems to be good, i am not an artist, but at least everything i tried was really valuable.
And i just realized that they are the biggest producer for pencils in the world.... i guess you never heard of them because they are big in Europe, Brazil and Asia, but not in North America.
We have those here in the USA too. They are usually bought in art stores. They're the best, but they do cost more than regular colored pencils and chalks. 🙃
Faber-Castell is a well-known brand in the US. But colored pencils are more of a niche, kids use crayons (which are super cheap) far more than anything else for coloring stuff.
Could be that they are also known in the US, I just had a look at there sales graph, and they make like 95% of there revenue in Europe, Asia and Brazil.
They provide (at least here in Germany) also those kind of crayon, which are "normal" priced, like 2 euros for 12 crayons. I assumed that Crayola is also more a type of Brand which is better than the dirty cheap stuff you might get at a one dollar shop, and here in Germany Faber Castell is the brand every Kid recognize.
They're the few pencils I have good luck with.
Faber Castell pencils and Staedler pens and markers are real joys to use.
Is it just me or do those 50 pack colored pencils at 1:25 look a little empty?
Rob S no I see it too

That’s because they usually move around in the box
