This is the last company I think of when I think controversy. I’ve never heard of this before
...man ...the background music ...lol
@Juan Cortez Muro fuck you
Same, I've used Uhaul my entire life and never knew any of this
Evil company.
They got me for 200 bucks. Theyre horrible people!
I love when a company says "we're a family owned company"
family is the FIRST one to screw you over.
Psychos make good CEOs, but not good parents.
@Phil McCrevice found the guy who's been spoiled
Johnson & Johnson he used to be a family company till just recently all the lawsuits.
Commentator found the guy who has a broken family lmao
@@RegionalRadioShackManager Bold assumptions, try again lmao
fun fact: Uhaul has the largest fleet of vehicle registered in Arizona, because ALL of their vehicles are registered there.
I move a lot. More than I would like (job) and I've used UHAUL about 6 times in the past 10 years and I noticed that every truck, no matter what state I rented from, had Arizona plates.
I always thought it was due to people trying to get the hell out of Arizona. It's was probably cheaper to register the trucks in AZ.
Never really thought about it.
Often wondered why and how they got away with it . I used U-haul in Pennsylvania and wondered if PA lost out on vehicle taxes
YaowBucketHEAD the company is based out of Arizona so when uhaul buys vehicles they get registered from the state the company is based in and those laws are applied. That’s how some exotic car owners buy $250000+ cars and not pay sales tax since they have an LLC out of Montana and Montana doesn’t have sales tax but they’re cars have to be registered in the state
Agent J I think it works like that though, it might be Delaware or one of the states in that region but I know that a bunch of U.S companies “base” their company out of a building in the state and get out of paying a bunch of taxes.

Moral of the story? Dont have so many damn kids & marriages.
Nah, it's to not family run a business unless you're in Japan.
@Blackpilled Saint I'm sure it does.
Yea only marry anime girls since they the only one that like you if they were real

Damn, 11 kids. This guy doesn't know how to pull out of a driveway.
11? He literally said "12 kids." You just watched the video. Come on, lad.
@@BackPalSA His children are uncountable...
Friendly neighborhood reminder that the pull out method isn’t all that reliable~
@@BackPalSA I was just blown away by the many kids he had. Probably more undisclosed since the guy is rich af.
All those single moms...ugh
The story is like a typical 90's mexican telenovela 🤣
*gasps in spanish*
This is great story material
forgot the hospital scenes
Those telenovelas are super popular here in Brazil
la rosa de guadalupe but more dramatic :0 (i am super late lol)

The UHaul employees should get the credit for keeping the company running through all that messy situation.
If you want to get technical half of their "employees" are the general public making use of their services. (If you're trying to argue that them driving a U-Hual makes them part of U-Hual) so it should be us that gets all that praise.
@@LickMyMusketBallsYankee well the public wouldn't be able to use the service if it wasn't for the employees.
@@paulheap1982 If they still receive a paycheck who cares about the mess in hq
That's usually the way of things. Bean counters and desk jockeys in suits make messes, it's the guys at the bottom in the work clothes that keep things going.
I should get all the credit because I kept everybody together and ran the company while everything was going on
Ahh back in the days when 3 years of medical school could be paid for by odd jobs in the great depression.
Long before government loans jacked up the cost of tuition
@Thomas Emilio You're right, the government shouldn't be in education.
Not now, not ever.
@@JonathanMoosey You are one of the few people that I have ever heard put forth that theory. I agree with it completely.
Commentator I don’t believe that at all, in fact the exact opposite. The point I was trying to make is how the government got involved in college tuition and it becoming an even bigger problem.
@Phil McCrevice What exactly would compel that?
"Family-owned and operated" seems like less of a selling point after watching this.
Well, I've heard once that family owned and operated business have 7x more chance to break. The real thing about all this video is: How they survived?
Especially with all the system problems and other stuff people talked in this comment section
Never really heard of this controversial history, so this will be interesting.
Precisely what I was thinking. Got really dark around 7:48. My God!
And you wont be hearing about it since dickhead thought skipping over it was somehow the right thing to do.
@@Onderonable ?
I want to know more about the genius move of putting the unique state iconography on the sides of the trucks and trailers. To me this was one of their most brilliant moves. It made every vehicle interesting and created a "Im moving there, Im moving from there, We are originally from there" attitude in many and was just really a brilliant way of making the vehicles interesting to everyone.
I'm the artist who did all fifty states, trust me it hasn't been all roses but thanks
Never thought a truck rental company had so much drama
Soon new on Netflix!
U-haul the most controverse drama series of the 2020 season
A large amount of money puts drama in everything.
There a many stories about families breaking up when it comes to inheritance.
@@hermask815 hell, even low income families break down over inheritances
@@obelic71 That.....actually I would probably see that.
What was it you said we're loading into the back of this Ryder van? Well, you must have quite the garden!
I went to high school with both Cece and Sophie. I had no idea at the time their father was the creator of the Uhaul empire - they were both unassuming and down to earth. I hurt for them being affected by this mess.
I am sure they are fine
This is a sad story, and a perfect example of why you should never split controlling interest of your company to your kids.
At least the kids gave a damn. A lot of companies go down hill after dad leaves the picture.
The pitfalls of _King Lear._
Reminds me of King Henry II of England.
This is why monarchs developed the rule of primogeniture.
I think it's more a perfect example of why unbridled "leveraging" and "diversification" are generally bad ideas. The kids had absolutely the right idea by trimming the unprofitable parts of the business and focusing on what was actually working.
As a former uhaul employee, this does not surprise me.
Oh? What was their company culture like? I'm genuinely curious.
@@THEGREENHELIUM Well, they under pay you and expect you to deal with customers that are some how worse than retail. Their tech is out dated. They refer to part-time as "moonlighting." The turn over rate is high and they act like we're all "family." At least I didn't have to work heinous hours. I mostly remember the customers being the-absolute-worst part of the job.
Also, the horrifying things that happen to our trucks or that are found in them. One lady crashed a pickup into a cinder block wall at speed, and walked away because she was so drunk. That is one of the more memorable incidents. Thefts are fairly common too.

Thank you for this look into the UHaul gang. I had the honour of meeting LS Schoen back in the '80s. On my first day on the job as an Area Field Manager, I flew from Edmonton Alberta to Calgary Alberta in his private plane he piloted. He was truly an amazing guy, it's too bad his family f(ked him out of the business he founded.
And here I thought u haul was a normal company
It is a normal conpany. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Lol bruh I have a landscaping a pool service business. My one buddy who’s dad started one back in the 80s said he stole a whole trailer with tools and all repainted it and that’s how he started his business. I don't mean to spam, but I need to ask: What happened to Pontiac?
chevy went bankrupt and had to axe 5 brands and Pontiac was 1
Regular Car Reviews did a really good video on it, probably more understandable by car guys and it's long, but basically Pontiac wasn't making profit and GM was forced to kill it off when they asked for a loan or whatever from the government, it would've been profitable if it stayed but it couldn't, basically Pontiac was a sportier Chevy but they mostly had FWD cars and that's not "cool." they had plans and Pontiac was picking back up, but not in time for the bankruptcy.
@@yaboirico5221 GM didn't just get a loan. GM went completely bankrupt and sold its assets to a new company created by the Government to leave GM's creditors holding the bag.
I had to call "a guy" to deal with them. That's all you need to know. 🤫
GM went bankrupt during the recession and sold off some of their brands to keep themselves i, business. These brands were Saab, Saturn, Hummer, and Pontiac.
Mike, another great video that took time to research and produce. Thank you again for your insightful content.
I had no idea of the internal strife in "da family." (Think mini Mafia.)
I did appreciate the U-Haul shops vs. renting from gas stations. You would have to call around or like my dad, just drive around until he found a trailer the size he wanted or after looking for half the day, settle for something much smaller requiring many extra trips. The centralize U-Haul stores made this search much easier. I can't, however, imagine anyone buying party supplies from our local greasy dirty noisy dusty warehouse type store which was not all that inviting.
By the way, I liked your silhouette on the iconic orange U-Haul background.
Honestly, when moving across the country, I always use Penske. WAY cheaper priced for the same thing.
I think U-Haul is cheaper for in town use though.
Budget and Penske are WAY more likely to have the equipment available when you arrive to pick up your reservation. There is nothing worse than having 5 people to help you move out and the truck or trailer you were promised is MIA. Or being told they have a trick but you need to drive to a different location to pick up a trailer on your dime. I knew a gas station owner who threatened to throw UHAUL's computer & equipment because he was done dealing with people who would show up and get all pissed off because the equipment wasn't available.
ABF Freight is kicking U-Haul's butt with their U-Pack service. Way cheaper for long distances.
Beewald yeah we looked at them to move a few things within 30 miles, outrageously expensive. Basically every other option was far cheaper and the exact same or better service from what I read. Ripppppp offffff. The beats by dre of truck rental. Same or shittier quality for 5X as much just because of the brand.
Imagine frequently moving across the country. Must be nice
Did you have the Penske file though?
I think this case was featured on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries.
Possibly. I watched an episode about it but I believe it was from the show Forensic Files.

My family operates a UHaul dealership, and honestly it's one of the best experiences we've had with an entity of it's kind. Joe makes some sort of personal contact with new locations, you are always given opportunity to grow, and the community of UHaul dealers around you is so tightly knit.

Best way to get screwed while you move. Make sure you keep the receipt and take pictures before you move the truck. Pictures of before and after mileage. Very crooked company.
With Uhaul and other vehicle rental companies, a lot of those ridiculous damage claims aren't even the actual company. A lot of the time, the individual employees will make you pay for damages and then just pocket the money.

I worked for U-Haul at a small U-Haul center from around 06-10. When I first started with the company all the trucks were old, I think we had a couple trucks still in service from the early 90's, a single 26' box truck was a mid 80's international with a manual transmission, a few from the mid 90s and rest were 99+. We still had some of the other rental equipment sitting around, engine hoists, rental hitches, rooftop boxes and super old wooden trailers. We never rented any of it, besides the trailers. By the time I left the fleet had been massively updated, our oldest truck was from the mid 00's and was strictly for local rentals, the random ancillary rental stuff had been removed from inventory and all the trailers were pretty new.
This has potential to be a blockbuster movie. Way better than anything Hollywood can write nowadays.
