VIDEO INFORMATION
Apple TV is hitting us with another sci-fi thriller, Constellation, and uhh yeah the weird psychological aspects of this are what I like in my sci-fi thrillers. Please and thank you.
We’re going to get into everything in these first three episodes, small things you may have missed and of course some weird theories of what is actually happening.
Pull out your iPad and click that Apple TV+ app, because subtle product placement is what we do here.
So Constellation kicks off with Jo Ericson, one of the European astronauts aboard the international space station, with a handful of others following their daily routine of experiments and space walks. It’s quickly established that Jo is from Sweden, seen by the flag on her uniform, and also a mother, talking to her daughter Alice, as were introduced to the other astronauts and just the interior of the space station, where much of episodes 1 and 2 takes place.
The big hiccup that literally starts the strange chain reaction of events at the core of this series is the ominous NASA physics experiment being conducted by Paul, the ISS’s United Stated astronaut. After three episodes, we’re still in the dark about its true purpose, but so far we know it’s dealing with magnetic fields in zero G, and somehow functions at a quantum level. Henry, the NASA man on the ground, is very particular about this experiment. Part of me thinks he went through this same fiasco as Jo and the others are about to. He’s also VERY persistent on making sure the experimental data gets back to earth, so I feel like this is going to be the Chekhov's gun of this series, because future Jo looks to have stolen it. Anyway the experiment is fired up for no more than 6 seconds and this is where all hell breaks loose.
Something seemingly collided with the ISS right after the experiment started up, causing fires, power and structural damage, and unfortunately the crew having to 127 Hours Paul’s arm, resulting in his death due to cardiac arrest. Now this is where the weird psychological thriller aspects of the series start to breadcrumb us viewers, because Jo discovers the source of the collision via the exterior of the ISS, and according to her and what we see, a damn USSR cosmonaut had been mangled up in the ship’s electrical wiring and structure.

I think given she may not be the mother of the daughter and that she thought the family car was red now its blue, she may be in a different reality and the other version of her who belonged in the current reality had died. All of it caused by the quantum particle experiment(?)
I find it mad you understand the main plot surrounds parallel universes yet somehow decided the same character was twins rather than the same person, clearly he figured out early on he wasn’t in the same universe as his name (or perhaps nickname) is different plus he absolutely knows the woman he is sleeping with died in his reality.

Bud and Henry aren't identical twins, they are the same person in two alternate realities. Henry and Bud got swapped into each others realites when they were on the Apollo 18 mission. Ones Irena died, the others didn't. This is the same thing that had now happened to Joe. Thats why the car is red in one reality and blue in the other, her daughter speaks swedish in one but not the other, and Jo is seperated from her husband in one but not the other.
The trailer for eps 4 also showed that Jo has a piano in her house but she says she never played piano before

The alternative reality part is obvious though the clue is definitely in the conversation about quantum physics where two states can exist simultaneously.
Joe daughter is also affected by whatever is going on so it’s not just about those who’ve been to space.
You forget one part - Irene asked Bud (or Henry, cant recall) - "how's your brother?". So there are 2 of them, twins or not unclear. Lots of suspense
@@NorthernNon They both speak about a “brother” and “sister”, it seems innocent enough though upon further examination it seems likely they are both referring to their other selfs and using a type of code word to be able to speak about it openly without worrying about potential bugs listening into their conversations.
It's bit of a fancy modern remake of the doppelganger which is about an astronaut who goes to an opposite earth on the other side of the sun, the same but flipped but not alternate universe. Kind of disappointed is about a parallel universe because there's been a lot of that recently in TV and movies, a subject regularly covered in 90s scifi TV, so not new for me, just more mainstream with a coat of realism
This series has me hooked, the amount of eerie tension it creates is absolutely incredible.
Completely on edge with the plot and characters who are all intertwined in this mystery.
The biggest clue on what’s going on is definitely the conversation about quantum physics particles that can exist in two separate states of being simultaneously.
We’re witnessing people and places existing in different states of being but also experiencing both states.
I’m curious if the blurs will continue to line or if the untangles will weave further!
Anyone noticed in the 1st episode when Jo is talking to Alice on the Ipad, she is switching between english and Swedish, and when they pan back to Alice, her clothes are different when she is speaking each language. The the effect is already in motion before the collision.
Came to comments looking for anyone who noticed this. We are watching at least 2 dimensions right from the beginning, before Cal was activated. Alice 1 calls Jo Mama, Alice 2 calls Jo Mummy. That scene actually got me hooked on the show right away 😆 I kept looking for clues for which dimension we’re watching.
You said Bud and Henry are twins? I am not sure I believe this to be so. Unless I missed something. I think they are the same person just alternate realities. One where he was either named Bud or used that as a nickname. It would explain why he misremembered his dogs name. Also it explains why Henry sees a glimpse of a mummified Irene.
My thinking is that both Henry and Bud swapped realities the same way Jo has. And this may be why Bud is a drunk. In one reality Irene died when apart of a mission to collect the matter. In the other she survived. Henry could have seen the death of Irene in one timeline before suffering the effects of that zero gravity matter. And then got swapped after that. This causes Bud to become a drunk because he probably lost the love his life due to this mess and lives with regret.
Sounds crazy but to me it explains why he misremembers and why Henry sees a dead Irene. It also explains why Irene doesn't recall a dead cosmonaut because in that timeline she didn't die. Jo obviously suffering from reality displacement too as she now has a blue car instead of red and is now in a timeline where she was either cheating on her husband or separated. I believe seperated because the husband seemed distant and reluctant. And then seemed surprised by Jo's advances.
As for Bud and Henry. I think Bud probably realizes that it's multiple realities which is why he said the Apollo mishap was Henry's fault and not his. Which goes back to my theory about Irene. Henry caused his original Irene to die before swapping realities. Now Bud got transfered there and is stuck there for decades with no Irene, while Henry is in the other timeline with Bud's Irene.
Agree. I also think that future Jo is the one that had an affair with the nasa guy (can't remember his name) because Alice asks about her father right at the beginning in the car. The Jo we follow through most of the story is the one that has no affair. She is shocked/surprised when the nasa guy wants to touch her, and her husband is giving hints that she was different "You look at me like you like me".
I think we are following the story of two Jos and two Buds and the device kind of connected two universes. I'm still not sure where that second Alice came from, perhaps there is also a timeslip going on. Anyways, great first 3 episodes, I liked it very much.
@@thilohettmer861Alice is simply experiencing both states of being simultaneously, I believe this is due to her holding hands with her mother when she swapped states.
This is true for her alternate state hence why both can exist in the same reality for brief periods.
@@thilohettmer861The 5 weeks later Jo has to be the same Jo we are following because she is with the non Swedish speaking Alice who only calls her Mummy not Mamma. The Alice she then finds in the other cabin is her Alice.
I think the other Jo died on the ISS. I also think that is the same reality that Bud is living in. When there is discussion about an astronaut dying on the ISS, they never mention one by name. When Jo finds Alice in the cabin, Alice asks if she is a ghost and tells her she has missed her. So I don't think the other Jo is alive in that Alice's reality.

Another bread crumb was when bud/Henry was being interviewed. At the end of it she said thanks bud and he got annoyed saying his name was Henry. Maybe Henry doesn't know he got swapped over with Bud...

This show is too fire, the camera work, the sounds, it literally had me so engaged I never experienced something like it for any other show or movie. Very unique story.
Also just realized something. Bud and Henry probably only swapped universes because of collecting the matter during the Apollos. They are each stuck in their alternate realities with no way home. Jo and her daughters experience is different because they were experimenting on it. So now it causes each to be transported back and forth. And most likely sometimes a 3rd place where it's in-between the two realities. Just an idea lol

it also aligns with what they said about the observer effect, one where it's white, one where it's black, and one where it's white and black
Did anyone else notice the two different Alices on Jo’s iPad as she walked her through the station? Hair and clothes are different on the two alices. Also, when hubby is teaching and pulled out for the emergency, he’s wearing two sets of clothes.
Whoever wrote this series must of been a big fan of Returnal (PS5). Criminally underrated game.
OMG, YES! I had Returnal written in my script, but thought viewers might not have a clue what I'm talking about. Loved that game, and the similarities are many

Thinking one of theJo's died too since her oxygen depletion countdown actually ended and Paul seems to be visiting her grave instead of vice versa. Sure there were other clues I missed as well.
Ooooothat makes so much sense why she envisions him with a sling at the grave - he survived by them amputating his arm - and she like slipped into that timeline/reality where the version of herself died

When you see paul visiting her grave he have both arm same when she have the vision after touching is floting arm in the ISS. When she leave in soyuze1 it s a 2 man operation to release the defective clamp and she see herself staying in ISS. I think that her other self stayed in the ISS to release the clamp to save Paul that stayed in soyuze1 that's why she died.
@bigjessus 100% this. Paul wasn't injured in Jo's original timeline, he didn't need his arm amputated. The other Jo released the bolt to help Paul escape in the pod, but it also released Jo in the other reality because they overlapped.
@@bigjessus Paul has an arm cast when Jo sees him visiting the grave, also Alice asks if she’s a ghost.
I believe both these instances suggest that she didn’t survive in the alternative universe and Paul did, it was likely Paul that saves her who is also experiencing the same phenomenon.

This was so helpful I'm on episode 6. I didn't even pick up that Henry and Bud are identical twins. I thought it was a parallel universe version of him talking to himself.

i feel like the component of seeing the element, seeing the one seperate into two, and when traced you get a morrored tree of branches, is the form of travel and collapse across the implied quantum bridge. I think that is why those that come into contact with the "base field" , like the mirror surface, begin to transition through their perception from the reflection. I look forward to seeing if this was thoight out, or just a great pitch.
Also, as Jo approaches the alternate cabin, the scene gets fuzzy and blurred....as if she is passing through some barrier or frontier...and then the scene returns to focus once she is in the alternative cabin.
@@tusseyd yes i think it showed she had the cannister with her. And this recent eisode was her first time near the canister since she reurned. Then we witness her primary, to that universe, state return with a simmilar inerference in the form of doubt and confusion. Very interesting. preserving this single path travler idea but allowing for multipath correction. Blurring the lines. Will be interesting to see how they deal with intertwined single user universes. I hope to see more granulation over continuation.

Absolutely loved silo but unfortunately it didn't engage fans thus it's rotton tomatoes scoring. I had to find out what happened so read the wool trilogy. I also loved the authors other book, Sand, take a read.

They are the same person just alternate realities. If they were twins, they would have had the same first dog. And it would be the named the same. Two realities mean a chance at having two different dogs or a different name of the same dog.

@@JBuckStudios So if i've got this right Henry and Bud went up on their apollo missions started the experiment, Then it all fell apart where Bud did everything to save his crew . meanwhile in Henrys universe everyone died then they got universe swapped Henry came back the hero got promoted to head of RPL and bud came back the loser became a drunk and ended up on the comicon cruise .
So somewhere in the other Universe Jo is possibly dead and paul (which is why we see paul at the graveyard) survived as the dead cosmonaut wouldn't of been there to hit ISS because she never died in that reality.

They’re not twin brothers lol. They’re just versions of themselves from two separate different realities. Unfortunately, they swapped realities. In one, Irena the astronaut died. Then in the other one, irena survived.
Definitely not twins.
It’s like thinking Jo seeing two versions of her daughter was twins.
Not sure how someone can understand the entire concept of multiple realities yet not realise that it means there’s two versions of everyone.

I gotta be honest, this one very nearly slipped away from me in the first couple of episodes. Not only did really feel like it was dragging in parts but it started to give off heavy vibes of "One woman's battle to be believed in an environment where everyone thinks she's lost her mind..." etc - you know, like you get a lot in those TV Movies you see on daytime cable. Almost invariably they involve a custody battle, a terminal illness, and, _of course,_ a *ReallyBadMan!* I can happily report though that by about episode 3, Apple have gotten their 'stool sample' together and have furnished us a great, taut, sci~fi thriller with just the right amount of weirdness. If you go for this 'parallel universe' type of thing, I will say that the German Netflix show 'Dark' did do it better, and with more atmosphere, a few years back, but that's not to say you should overlook 'Constellation' in favour of 'Dark'. That would be like saying that just because 'The Rolling Stones' are a better band than 'Jefferson Airplane', one shouldn't listen to 'Jefferson Airplane'!

Getting better onward
The breadcrumbs start a bit earlier in ep1. If you pay attention to Jo’s daughter’s image in the iPad, you’ll notice that the daughter has different hair/clothes every other time they show her. Then the accident happens.
Alice saw what happened because she was on FaceTime so she was an observer and it’s affecting her too. You got the slit experiment wrong. Bud is the same person in the multiverse or everything got split when the did the experiment
Definitely starting this series over. Show definitely is a better watch than I first thought.

I think Severance was unlucky when season 2 was due to start filming thd actors/writers strike began and knocked it back but it is coming, l recently saw a promotional pic for season 2 (huge Severance fan if you can't tell!😊)

I think in one reality Paul was saved so his 'daughter's' are having these 'nightmares'. Remember, Jo sees Paul at a graveyard with his arm in a sling. Paul's visiting dead Jo's grave I reckon.

Also, it's Gravitational Lensing which is used in Astronomy, not the Double Slit. Also IIRC, in the movie Paycheck, they are looking at light which curved around the UNIVERSE to look into the future.

So in one universe the wife is named Erica? and in the other Francisca? And the Jo at the table is from the "other" universe. Something like that?

It really pays to watch these episodes a second time as you pick up on things missed the first time.
I completely missed that in the beginning when Jo is video calling with Alice, you can see different Alice's, they have different hairstyles and different clothing. The Swedish speaking Alice is the daughter of the Jo we are following and Jo ends up in the reality of the English speaking Alice.
I think both Jo's switched into each other's reality right after the collision. In one reality, Paul is injured and dies. In the other reality, I think he lives. That is why Jo sees him standing at the grave site, with no amputated arm. It could also explain when she grabs his amputated arm in the ISS and sees Paul alive.
In Jo's original reality I think she ends up being left behind. The bolt malfunction occurs and she stays behind so that Paul is able to return to Earth. All we see is a shadow looking out the window.
It explains Swedish speaking Alice' s behaviour. She thinks she sees a ghost when Jo finds her in the cabin. We also see her stomping on her rabbit and the other Alice mistakes this for her friend Wendy.
I so interested to see where the show goes. Loving the mystery.
And Alice is played by twin girls - Davina and Rosie Coleman
Terrible writing and directing. Scene sequences are anti climactic and confusing. Could have done a way better job. Naomi Repace is awesome tho.

Bruh this show stinks
I forgot from which episode, but whenever there's a scene with Alice, I pass through it. She annoys and disgusts me. The drama would be better without her character. Her only purpose seems to be to irritate the audience. Alice is always angry, complaining, or hiding in a closet, as if the whole world should care about her. My advice to everyone is to skip scenes with Alice; it'll save you some time.
