I think they need to do a new one like in the style of the new Streets of Rage. Having said that, I like this iteration of the franchise but I feel they could of done much more with it than they did. To it's like Golden Axe 1.5.
I could never quite put my finger on it but there was something about Golden Axe's graphics that I always preferred over the visuals of Golden Axe 2. The best way I can explain it is that Golden Axe looks like an arcade game in your house that isn't supposed to be there and Golden Axe 2 looks very much like a Mega Drive\Genesis game. If that makes any sense.
Loved the Star Wars quotes thrown in, they made me chuckle. I don’t think I played this on the mega drive ever. The 2nd arcade game looked really cool as well.
I really want to see an offical release of Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Ader on both consoles and PC. I know an upcoming 1up arcade cabinet will feature it and I am interested in it but I really want to play an offical copy on my consoles and PC. Damnit Sega...Let me give you my money!
vidlink yes, Sega should release more hidden gems instead of Sonic the Hedgehog and Shinobi, and the like. Amazing games but come on! We’ve enjoyed it many times...something fresh yet not, please
Just beat this for the first time tonight, for whatever reason I never got around to it. The quality of life improvements almost make it too easy but it’s still a ton of fun
Actually, this was the game that introduced me to the series. Always loved it's decisions in terms of music (the intro is still banging hard, and the whole ost is so epic and heroic).
This was literally the first Mega Drive game I asked my parents for. I saw it in Our Price and loved the cover! I got it for my birthday. I must have been about 7. I loved it. It plays differently than the first and third installments, and is superior in my opinion.
It was totally lazy but I still loved this game, probably because, as you're saying, it was more Golden Axe. It was barely better but it wasn't worse. I have even more nostalgia for it than I have for Golden Axe because I played this one more.
Strangely found myself scrutinising loin cloths in the early parts of the videos having never seen them blown up so large before at 0:48. There is a significant margin of variety I must say. Then I went on to judging the ladies. The clear winner was 1:13 with hair in the 60's style of blow dried and back-combed hair with almost cheeky mysterious smile and a rather ageing loin cloth man reaching out to touch her giant bosom but becoming confused as she is either 10 times his size or in the foreground, although he is in front of her. So perspective-wise, she must be about 150 feet tall.
This was actually the first Golden axe I played. The controls were very tight and responsive, so when I finally got around to picking up the original, it felt clunky and heavy. I definitely think both have their own strengths though.
They did refine the gameplay. You can no longer continuously slow swipe enemies to death like you could in the prior game. Biggest improvements are the magic like you noted and also the ability to aim your enemy throws. But really that's about it. Previous game looks better, imho. I do recommend checking out the Pyron color patch. It's not a big jump but it does improve the color palette.
@@time4advancement244 You can choose which direction you can throw a bad guy in GA2. In GA1 it was always the direction you were already facing. GA1 had a broken combat mechanic where if you slowly attacked any enemy with timed slow slashes you could keep them locked in a stooped animation frame where they couldn't attack back. Death Adder is ridiculously easy once you figure the timing out. You can't do that in GA2.
@@graysight Never claimed the game was a reinvention of the wheel, nonetheless the gameplay changes I mentioned were made and are improvements over GA1. If you want to see the formula truly advance, check out GA3. The main problem there is the graphics took a nose dive over everything that came before.
I owned both main Golden Axe games back in the day, as well as Golden Axe III via emulator. I agree. Golden Axe II succeeds at being a good game, but fails as a sequel, this is more like a 1.5. Its strongest improvements are its visuals and music, but not much else. The stages themselves I found to be bland and empty, and I would've personally enjoyed actual traps and hazards, going through these barbarian landscapes. Dark Guld was a forgettable villain that came out of left field, and defeating him doesn't fill you with the same sense of achievement as you did slaying Death Bringer, in the original. That's my view~
Great video! Thanks for enlight us about the Axe battler confusion. To be honest I must admit this game upgraded in details the first one as you said (not with this words) but, is extremely insane if we are going to talk about difficulty. I only could beat it once in a lucky afternoon. On the other hand I liked more the development of story in the console version. Could you talk about the third one?, it's my favourite and I loved the details, new mechanics, variety of characters, ways election and multiple endings. I don't know why people I have talked didn't liked it. I would like to know your point of view.
Much better game than the original, different coloured skeletons, better magic power selection, better music, better playability, better guardians especially the horsemen and a cool intro.
no changes needed from one game to the next. same settings..it would feel strange if things were totally different. its a continuation of the story..great games
I remember me and my brother were in Target with our parents..they agreed to buy us just ONE video game...my brother wanted Golden Axe 2 and I wanted Kid Chameleon. Guess which one we walked out the store with........ Kid Chameleon lol
I actually think Golden Axe 2 wasn't so much Golden Axe 1.5, but more like another dev teams take on the Golden Axe theme/formula. I prefer the visuals of the original over Golden Axe 2, and I love the music in 2. I prefer the original overall, although I still enjoy 2. The original just feels so much better. Although it could be because I didn't play the GA2 until many many years later, and I grew up playing Golden Axe one all the time (and still play it all the time!).
I never played GA2 (or GA3) in the Genesis era. First time was on one of the collections that came out on later consoles. My first thought was, "it's the same damn game." And that's about right.
I couldn't agree more. It was very much a rehash of the first game, but it was still worth playing because the first game was so good. The music was definitely a highlight of the sequel. Sadly, no magic could match the awesome top level dragon fire from the first game.
I really love the old art style of these games. It would be awesome to see a remaster or sequel with faithful artwork. I am not fond of the art style of of the newer Streets Of Rage 4. I prefer the older version styles and I wish they would have kept it like the older versions but maybe with higher resolution and details. I think a sequel to Golden Axe classic games today they wouldn't make it as appealing. Seems like fan made sequels get things right. I don't really care for cell shaded cartoon graphics.
Idk why Sega was being cheap with this one. Thankfully they learned that quarter pinching wasn't gonna cut it for the sequel to Streets of Rage, and when they did that, it paid off in a huge way, creating one of the best games to ever be developed. They should have had the amazing talent at Ancient convert Revenge of Death Adder using the SoR2 graphics engine or something in a huge cart. Still a decent beat em up & game, but not enough to be a timeless classic worth recommending to those without retro sensibilities. I will say that the soundtrack is fantastic and has some of the best orchestral music on the system.
0:15 I don't like being that guy... But Altered Beast was actually the first co-op beat em' up on the Genesis/Mega Drive. I mean, it was a launch title. Not to mention Altered Beast looked, sounded, and played amazingly, for it's time. Honestly, it looked better than GA and SoR... If ANYTHING, you should do a retrospective on AB
TrueSinister I’m not saying it was great. Because it was middling, AT BEST, as far as beat-em-up’s go. But it’s one of the earliest/earlier entries into the genre, and despite it being flawed, it help pave the way for co-op coin munchers. And I was mostly talking about it’s sound and visuals. The sprites and animations look better than most of the games that came after it, and it does a great job of setting a tone. And as far as timelines go. It was the Genesis’s first co-op beat-em-up... being a launch title and all (a port of an arcade game that had released a little less than 2 years before) You can’t get any earlier than that.
The first Golden Axe game I ever played after Golden Axe was Golden Axe 3 and I found that to be more enjoyable then one and two, new characters, new/special moves, branching roads, multiple endings I played that game alot! But I agree nothing beats Arcade Golden Axe Revenge, wish they will home console port it already!
It was to similar to the first Golden Axe both in characters and mechanics, it didn't have the graphic update that other sequels like Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2 had. It's actually a very fun game but it was not as good as people expected, specially after seeing The Revenge of Death Adder.
I would say worthy. Just a simple expansion of the first game that looks, plays and sounds a bit better. Honestly didn't like the first game all that much, this one makes it much better.

Sega should have made the Megadrive a home System 16 and taken a hit on the Hardware cost like Sony with the PS3. The leap in technology would've made its software boom in Japan. Imagine arcade perfect home versions of Golden Axe or Double Dragon in 1988! It possibly would have been to close to the Neo Geo in cost though.

Just like you I wasn't a big fan of Golden Axe II. It was a sequel to Golden Axe like Mario 2 (Japan) was a sequel, but even more so. I have difficulty trying to differentiate the two when thinking about them.
The genesis sequel wasn't much of an improvement indeed. The OST was very catchy and the fireball shooting mages were a good addition to the gameplay. Otherwise the far superior arcade sequel should have gotten much more attention back in the day.
I think Golden Axe 2 was better than Golden Axe 1 on the mega drive but I like Golden Axe 1 in the arcade better. Revenge of Death Adder was my absolute favorite in the series though. They never made that for console so I had it on MAME way back in the day.
As a kid I alwase thought it was dumb that the barb and Amazon have like the same weapon I alwase thought she would be cool with 2 swords or daggers or something
I always though the music was good for Golden Axe 2 but the sound effects were awful compared to the first...the constant "bleh!" noise when you kill an enemy got really annoying after awhile
Golden Axe 2 for the Genesis was one of my first games for the system!👌👍
Golden Axe 2 was my first Sega game that I got (not including the pack-in Sonic game). I spent many hours enjoying it.

shame there was never a golden axe that used the streets of rage 2 engine, especally as golden axe 3 was complete arse.
@Jan Borbély Mine too, then 1, then very far 2.
GA2 is the true sequel for me. I never saw The Revenge of Death Adder in the arcade or anywhere else. The opening music = badass.
