I had a lot of fun playing it with my friends back in the day. I was unpleasantly surprised when i discovered that this game is apparently hated so much by the retro gaming community.
Yeah. I still love this game, and I'm still not 100% sure what people mean when they say the level designs are bad. Just the color scheme for the individual levels? Is that really all this is about? Is it about the fact that a lot of patterns repeat? I guess I could see that being an issue, if you were hoping for something more, but it doesn't ruin the game itself. I just don't get it.
This game is actually great on many respects (gameplay; soundtrack; branching paths...) and even visually it still looks interesting in many spots (the crystal cave or the eagle backdrops for instance) but it was held back by a limited cart size (8 meg, absurdly low for a 1993 beat 'em up) and short development time. I love it (and noticed that many people love it as well, you just have to browse some Golden Axe III soundtrack videos to see about that) but it's clearly not the full masterpiece that it could have been. edit: that thumbnail tho
@Frizzurd I agree. The only things that did differently were allow you to use less Pots to use magic (which is useless to me because I just saved those for damaging bosses) and replacing Thieves with mages.
It's really not. The graphics are atrocious and the gameplay was dull. Only the amazing music had any sort of kudos. I much prefer the first and second games.
I was super surprised you barely mentioned the music but spoke minutes on end about SOR2's music. Seriously this was the best sega game soundtrack at that time. The game's main soundtrack that plays on menu and at start of the game that later evolves to the epic hard hitting version when in the last castle stage was seriously some of the best evolving soundtrack i have heard in any game to date. It really made you feel you are at the climax of an epic journey. You missed quite a few things. Forgot to mention the VS mode where Eve is a playable character. And as well actually a hidden playable character for the campaign. Backgound graphics sure werent the most amazing but you forgot to mention the number of stages all together this game had. If you take into account all those stages it can clearly be seen that the backgrounds had a minimalist approach to fit in so many different stages. Talking about the background and not mentioning the stage where that takes place on the back of a giant eagle. As well these were at the time the best character sprites on the mega drive for the golden axe sega console series. Game play wise this was the best in the sega mega drive golden axe series. After playing this one and going back to the previous titles on the consoles really makes them stand out how clunky the controls and how odd the hitboxes were of 1 and 2.
Golden Axe III is excellent. I'll argue that it's even the best in the series. The control scheme was modified from the first 2 games, thus if one tries to play the game as if it's Golden Axe I or II, it will feel clunky and awkward. That's understandable. Play the game for 20 minutes and get used to the new controls. It's truly an excellent game with a ton of replay value. Also, there's a lot of ambiguity about how to get to the real end of the game. One must reach the first form of the final boss with an A or greater ranking (I believe this is 500 points). There's a surefire way to NOT hold this rank (at least on the normal difficulty) and if I remember correctly, that's to continue more than twice (maybe more than once), as every death penalizes your rank and every continue severely penalizes your rank. Also, once you've got the hang of the controls, playing the game on Hard increases your chances of holding a greater rank as the game throws just a few more enemies at you, which provides more opportunity to increase your rank.
Also, if one really wants to figure out how to get to the true final boss, they very likely took all or most of the possible paths through the different stages. I did this before figuring out how to truly win and was very satisfied that I saw the entire game.
I think it's not only the best of the series, but better than than the arcade version, and even better than most highly celebrated games that are super dull like simpsons and TMNT
This is my 3rd favourite 16-hit console beat ‘em up, with my 1st and 2nd ones being TMNT 4: Turtles in Time (SNES) and Streets of Rage 2 respectively. I like the Conan the Barbarian theme, characters, branching paths, and magic, but it’s definitely rough around the edges. My biggest complaints are the stiff movement and having to beat late-game bosses with cheap tactics. I wish there was a remake or something to remove all the rough areas.
Sega seems to love the game, as it's been included in just about every genesis/MD compilation they've put out. It's certainly not something they are ashamed of or think devalues the brand.
@@Spacefrisian I don't know which version of the mini you have, but in mine you can play 2-player mode in GA. You have to press start on the second pad on the main screen (before game modes are presented). Friendly fire is a b*tch.
Strongly disagree. Best GA game on Megadrive system in my opinion. Gameplay actually allows player to entertain themselves unlike the first two games with branching paths and result screen providing more replayability than both previous games combined. Sure, enemies are dull (just as in previous iterations, mind you) but at least this feels like a legit co-op with combined magic and 2-player specials. Not to mention 3 possible endings depending primarily on your skill if I recall correctly.
I do agree that it's not exactly the most attractive lookin',but,i was so blown away by how deep the game mechanics are,i didn't even care anymore. As far as alternate routes go,I seriously think that if Streets Of Rage 3 did it like this, that game probably would've gotten a better rating.
SOR 3 has the best mechanics in the series. The soundtrack is just SO fundamentally different that it altered how people felt about the game. And Axel wearing Adam’s outfit will always be weird to me.
I never knew this game was considered bad. It isn't that different from prior GA games and gives you some new moves and characters to play with. Also, it has the best game over text that simply says "And you dead."
Aw man.I never realized so many people hated this game so much. I actually have it on my Sega Genesis along with the other 2 Golden Axe games. It's my favorite 1.
Not really a Golden Axe fan, but I enjoyed the third game the most out of the trilogy on megadrive. Mind you, even people who hated the game can't argue that the gameplay was the deepest compared to the previous entries. Complaints about graphic and looks in general of this game feel like graphic whoring to be honest.
Yeah this game looks nothing at all like Golden Axe... It's quite clear they wanted to do something different and yet keep it looking enough the same, they succeeded. If one side argues it's not different enough and the other side argues it's not even Golden Axe then I'd put that down to complaining for the sake of complaining
@@jgfjgfify And in what way were the previous two games on megadrive better, gameplay-wise ? In those games, you had even less moves than in the third one.
@@mdrdrone1625 Moves don't make the game all the time son. It wasn't mediocre but it wasn't really golden axe either to me. It was still fun and it wasn't a generic brawler like he said but it wasn't like the other 2 before it. Final fight managed to feel like each other through their 3 games, but for some reason streets of rage and golden axe couldn't do that for their 3rd entries.
I'd argue that this is a title that can benefit from the passage of time, since it's easier now to look at it as "more classic Golden Axe to enjoy" and not as "inferior to other beat-'em-ups of its era."
It’s my personal favorite of the Golden trilogy, for the same reason Streets of Rage 3 is my favorite of the Streets trilogy : the battle system improved from the previous ones. But Golden Axe II has the best soundtrack, I can recall all of them from my memories.
Golden Axe 3 is a good game and you should cover Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder the Arcade and the Arcade hardware is the Sega System 32 and this is the Golden Axe series running on 32 bit hardware with better detailed stage levels and larger detailed character sprites and this is one of the best looking games ever made in the Golden Axe Arcade series 💯👍👌
Having played the first two games since I was a kid, I got to play the third on Switch and, honestly, the gameplay is pretty good when you master the mechanics. Not your regular button mashing beat'em up. Music is also way better than in GA2, and you have different paths. The thing that killed this game is the lack of enough different bosses and the horrible backgrounds, which look like they were for Master System. Anything else is pretty good, IMHO.
Golden Axe 3 is an excellent game! After playing through each game recently, including both arcade versions and all three Megadrive versions, I still think that Golden Axe 3 is the best playing of all of them. The graphics may have looked a bit dated at the time it was released, but it has so much more than that over the previous two on the Megadrive and even over the much loved Revenge of Death Adder arcade game. It has: Branching paths Alternative endings Interesting enemies A better Golden Axe/Conan type of world feel Varied stages Interesting beasts Wide variety of moves Unique special moves per character Good music Nice character animations Great intro A decent length Challenging difficulty Better death sounds than the crappy cries in Golden Axe 2 I don't see why people don't like it. Perhaps they only judge it by the opening stage.
@@TopHatGamingManChannel I hope Dynamite Deka/Die Hard Arcade & it's "not sequel" Dynamite Deka 2/Dynamite Cop can cross your gentlemanly eyes for the Top Hat treatment.
I've tried to play through this game many times, but I always end up putting it down. Maybe now that we're on this COVID-19 social distancing thing I may give it another shot.
I think its not only easily the best golden axe game, but also one of the top 20 best genesis games to play today, and in fact one of the 50 best beatemup ever, including arcade games. Way better than shallow games like konami games.
Love this game so underrated! If the RPG aspect of the game was developed a bit more it would have been insane! Maybe new skills and different weapons! To this day one of my all time favorite games.
i have never found a single sane person saying golden axe 3 is a bad game, this is is the bet game in the trilogy, and certainly not an embarassment, this video is the real fucking embarassment!
The graphics were a step up from Golden Axe 2 on Genesis/MDrive, though the reach of the character attacks seemed different. Still playable and a grand adventure in G Axe 3.
Golden Axe 3 is by far the beat Golden Axe game on the Sega Genesis and if people would actually give it a chance they would see how deep the gameplay is compared to the first 2.
Golden Axe III, in my view, was going in the direction of The Super Shinobi II/Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, which would ultimately explain the art and music approach that the game took, both games were in development at the same time and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some form of mutual influence in how both were handled on this front; with Project Mars/the Sega Neptune having been in development at the time, Golden Axe III would've definitely benefited from having a presence in Arcades first and then ported to the console, though the concept of this ultimately becoming a reality was possibly nonexistent, considering that Golden Axe II never saw an Arcade launch and I don't know how financially successful The Revenge of Death Adder was to even consider an Arcade version of Golden Axe III outright, despite how beneficial it would've been to its success, given the Branching Paths mechanic and the potential possibility of allowing you to play as all four characters at once (the latter being a "What if?" scenario). Golden Axe III's only real competition on the console front from the Super Famicom in I993 was Final Fight II and Rushing Beat Shura, both of which were severely handicapped in their gameplay due to the low enemy count that one could have onscreen at a given time (three); if I had to choose between the three at the time in Japan, I would still put my money into Golden Axe III, as Final Fight II is a bit too straightforward to warrant constant replayability (unless you're playing the Arcade port) and Rushing Beat Shura is too short to truly get an optimal experience out of what must be anticipated from the third entry in a Brawler franchise (despite its vast cast of characters and branching paths, more than what Golden Axe III delivered), Golden Axe III is exactly what we needed on the gameplay front to feel a genuine sense of challenge while also optimizing the replayability factor. It also must be noted that the ROM hack Golden Axe III: RongHe Edition exists: This ROM hack brings forth a more definitive experience with Golden Axe III that allows you to play as every character (with the inclusion of Eve, who was initially supposed to be playable and still exists in the Retail Build's code for using in the Single Player campaign), Six Button Support to allow the ability to use Special Attacks and Magic Specials without complicated button sequences (as well as switching between the five playable characters, Mania Plus' Encore Mode~style), and access literally every single level that the game offers for the utmost complete experience of this title; especially considering that you need a B or A Rank to even fight the Extra Final Boss Battle with Hellstrike proper, this is the best way to do it, you'll likely have enough of a character score that your Rank will be a nonissue and you'll get the full ending as intended, RongHe Edition shows how massive Golden Axe III truly is and it honestly feels more fulfilling when completed this way when compared to what the Retail Build gave us.
It’s the best Golden Axe ever on an 8 meg cartridge! If this was done on a 16 meg or higher they would have as much detail as Street of Rage 2 or Shinobi 3!
In my opinion this game is the second best golden axe right behind revenge of death adder and I don't know why people say that the palette swaps were lazy in this game WHEN THE OTHER GOLDEN AXE GAMES ALSO DID RECOLERS and for me idk why but the stages are decent and I remember all of them and honestly I'm glad there the way thay are I like the simpleness of them and the characters are still fine to me at least and I think anyone could at least agree that the music is amazing but that's just my opinion on the game and you don't have to agree with it.
I fail to understand why this game generates so much criticism. It really isn't that bad. One could argue that all the drawbacks (pallet swaps, environments, etc.) are exactly on par with the first two games. The music is quite good, I like the playable characters and the environments aren't any more bland than GA 1 or 2. I enjoy it.
Oddly enough however, despite being considered the worst of the trilogy by many people, Golden Axe 3 is the only game of the original Golden Axe trilogy that I actually enjoyed and loved. I know I'm going to go on a broken record when I say this: I HATED the first two golden axe games.
so, what is the "mad" story? you haven't talked about the development of the game, or why sega was happy releasing it in it's dreadful state in japan. indeed, perhaps a discussion of why it features in re-releases when the quality has been proven awful might have been interesting. as it is, there is no "mad" story here, just a review. i agree wholeheartedly with the review, for what that's worth. could you at least discuss the game engine and delve into why the engine from streets of rage 2 was not used, or why the developers were happy with graphics that would, in part, have looked sub-par for a late eighties release? i am thinking of the sky graphics, along with the rock tiles. as it is, the character sprites actually look half-decent. was there an issue with development time? did the release of revenge of death adder take up development resources? i fail to see what research has been done beyond what was previously discussed through other youtube reviews of the game. if i seem ungrateful, apologies. after all, it's your hobby, not mine - and you certainly aren't answerable to me!
I whole heartedly agree with this comment. Perhaps you could do the "Mad" schtory of what went wrong with this review. No research necessary, just introspection. Meanwhile I can look within myself to wonder why I am wasting 15 minute chunks of my life to watch the so called history of my childhood toys, that actually amount to screen shots of the game, and some basic self evident knowledge that anyone who didn't actually already know could learn from a glance at Wikipedia.
Tophat has said this before, but the series is called 'the mad story of.......', the 'madness' part of it isn't always about the game or the story itself.
Thats funny because i thought this was the best entry.I loved the added moves and how gangster the bird boss was.also the stage on the flying bird was great also
prime candidate for a modrom megamix. Backport the new characters and combat into golden axe 1 or 2 and it wouldnt be a complete waste, but sega wouldnt be arsed.
I don't see any wrong with golden axe 3. I meant better gameplay move more fluid. Kinda like playing bare buckle 3. Graphics to me more smoother. Sound effects also better. In fact I like this golden axe 3 over the first two series.
You can notice that as background graphics are dull the characters sprites are more colorful, detailed and bigger than the originals ones. I think this was a trade off sega programmers did.
10,000.00 % disagree..... Only joking 😂 No hate here, Fellow Brits gotta stick together, but this is why Golden Axe III is amazing GA III Intro.... BEST IN THE SERIES, That OST is the best OST in the series, I'd argue the console, the music is complete 🔥 and no talks about it Dual CO-OP MAGIC! And co-op moves, awesome dual magic spells that make this game best played in co op like most beat'em ups of the time GA III has a better story than I & II ... I honestly think people were mad you couldn't play as the dwarf with the Axe like you could in the first II, Different = Bad mentality... The story of Golden Axe III is about getting the Golden Axe back from the Prince of Darkness, with the dwarf Gillius geeza being retired at the start, if your actually lucky enough to beat the game, You get to retrieve the Golden Axe walk back thru every level you beat being cheerd on by free'd prisoners returning the the free'd Golden Axe to Gillius The knock of the stage background to me is a bit of a reach compared to GA I & II, in the second level you are riding a run away bone cart, how is that not awesome! Crystal level looks beautiful, and the animals you can ride, the branching paths... So good! Saying that Golden Axe III doesn't look as good as TMNT HH or SOR II I dont think is too fair, only because they are both going for the cartoony bombastic style, GA III never like, set out for a cartoony style and looks just as good as I & II Never played Revenge of Death Adder, I hear that's supposedly the best one in the series and everyone is entitled to their opinions y'know... It's just a game lol But Golden Axe III OST alone (if nothing else) is the best OST on the console
EMBARRASSMENT!? EXCUSE ME? Golden Axe III may be rough, but is so cool in so many aspects! the amount of different attacks you can pull off is outstanding. And music? OH MAN THE MUSIC. Visually it's not impressive, but that's mostly a product of the shortened development time it had. Not because devs weren't competent! It is probably the best of the trilogy. Why are you talking about the levels 1 by 1 skipping the alternate paths? besides, it's not always Proud who you fight in the Hamlet: it varies depending on what characters the players are using. Dude, I love your videos and reviews, but you're selling this game soooooooo short! I agree: it lacks enemies, too many repeated bosses, visually are not impressive for the time: but the replayability is up there, with tons of special moves per character and branching paths! besides, even if some scenarios were boring, there were cool ones like the Giant Eagle or Death Mountain. I seriously believe is one of the bests of the Trilogy. And the soundtrack?! how can you think the soundtrack is bad?! the compositions are amazing! the way they mixed tribal elements like primitive drums with the equivalent to guitars, bass, and synth is pretty cool! I am sorry but I have an immortal undying love for this game, and even tho I'm not the best at it, I still play it today and love with all of my Sega kid heart xD
Golden Axe 3 doesn't honestly look like a bad game to me. It's underwhelming, and I can see where viewers and gamers at the time would have been disappointed that it wasn't more visually appealing. However, it does a number of small things differently and seems to play well, so I don't think it was a total loss.
There is tons of depth in the game. Each character has tons of attacks in the game. The enemy a.i. gets progressively more difficult and start attacking you in different ways later I the game.
I am loving the beat um' up deep dives! The Golden Axe games are some of my favorites! Also digging the Sega appreciation too all around. I'd love to see you go through the Shinobi series sometime as it is one of my favorite gaming franchises.
Golden Axe 3's blandness exists in the first 2 games, it's just they are so short they don't stick out as much. You can finish both those games back to back in less time than it takes to finish the third game. Honestly, I think the game is on par but I can't blame anyone for expecting more by this point. Still better than the Streets of Rage 3 though.
The Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3 (Bare Knuckle 3) was a great game though. Sega of America ruined the western release. There's no great version of Golden Axe 3.
this game was nice. soundtrack was nice, and characters and paths varied. of course there is laziness but still the game is solid for 93. still a good beatem all and a good alternative of capcom dungeons and dragons tower of doom on atcade from capcom
Embarrassment? Nah. Actually, this game is pretty decent and has many memorables soundtracks. This one is better than GA2, but this is just my opinion.
Golden Axe III only used an 8 megabit cartridge; in contrast, Streets of Rage 2 used a 16 megabit cart. This would definitely explain the bland graphics.
This is the best in the trilogy! You didn´t even mention double magic and attacks, even this articles you showed, proving how barely you know the game! Such shame, all the problems you said about background and bosses the last 2 entrys of the game suffer from the SAME thing! GA3 is the BEST if you´re an actually player.
I can think of much worse offenders in the bland graphics category. Golden Axe 3 has a few new elements to the gameplay that really make it stand out as a decent (and quality) sequel. Yes, all the GA games suffer from repetition, but cart size limitations are part of that generation. Among the things I love about GA3 are the main character animations and attacks. You can tell they were branching out with this entry, maybe not with the levels (because they do not look as special as GA 1) but with the gameplay and specialties of the four characters. Good video, but the bus doesn't belong on top of this one in my opinion.
Hey Top Hat, great review! Love your content too. I must say I also always loved this game, and it kinda feels to me it gets more flak than it deserves. Maybe it's just childhood memories (I also played it as an adult), but it always felt to me it was a clear improvement from the previous ones. As in, it never seemed worse to me. Anyway, I know access to it was hard in places like the US, but I recommend it to any Golden Axe fan.
You did a great job with your video but I have to disagree... Golden axe 3 is a better experience coop than golden axe 2. I remember playing it on Gens, sharing a keyboard with my friends and having a blast 20 years ago !
He actually said it's the worst of the trilogy? Really? C'mon this reviewer actually thinks this game is worse than Golden Axe 1? He is so totally off, he is basing his entire review on the fact that he finds the backgrounds bland... In my opinion, this reviewer lost all credibility with me... Golden Axe 3 is the best of the series, I played them all and this one is the deepest. At least it wasn't a complete clone like Streets of Rage 3 was of Streets of Rage 2. I gave this a real chance and it is my favorite, combo attacks, combo magic, and blocking and so much more! This is NOT an embarrassment, it's an awesome game!
1 Too much Streetfighter vibe. 2 Silly characters design (Blanka and Thunder cat? really?) 3 Animation looks so funny not as strong and solid attack as the first and second. 4 Stage design looks bored. 5 Music so bad really bad Compared to epic and so popular 1st and 2nd iconic musics. 6 colours scheme.
Worst graphics? Dreadful? Embarassment? Wow. It ain't that bad. It should've been better but it'd still good. I loved the new characters, paths and bigger movesets
I liked the video, even if I don't agree about GA3 being bad. It's underrated. Maybe everyone was upset about it not being ported from the arcade Revenge of Death Adder, and Sega deciding to change up the combat system. I'm sure that more could've been done with the graphics if it were a 16M cart (like SoR 2) instead of 8, and given a little more development time.
@@jeremygregorio7472 Then they should have used a 16 Mb cartridge. Besides, Gunstar Heroes had 8 Mb and was a master piece, it was Sega who made the game, not a small rookie company with little knowledge of the Megadrive hardware.
The creators of this game were incredibly ambitious for it only being an 8mb game. If they had 16mb they would have been able to provide the graphics some detractors expected from it.
Thing is games like this got more hate back in the day (like SOR3) as people weren’t used to endless sequels and these appeared right in the peak of when games were progressing at an alarming rate so something relatively safe and uninspired seemed so ‘old fashioned’
I think this game was rushed and was published in somewhat late state beta. Perhaps Sega wanted to publish it as it was and put as much as possible developers working on Saturn. It's a shame because game music is really nice and you can see how developers wanted to add content like path choice, not so conventional characters, etc. For me what kills the game it's the sheer repetition of the same 3 enemies all the time.
I'd played GA3 the most, and actually like the battle mechanics a lot. Trying to use the unique moves at that point of time (often requiring rotating the whole d-pad) is just crazy and fun. And the difficulties of the game (that ain't aided by overpowering spells in the previous entries) make this simply the best beat 'em up of the series. Yes, the graphics is bland, but heck. who cares about the graphics?
So are just saying this game is bad because certain people said it's bad? This is my first title that I played in the trilogy, and i was blown away by everything in it. Well, i still often playing it now once in a while compare to the first two
Always said this, but Sega should have made Golden Axe 3 with the Streets of Rage 2 engine. Would have been a totally different story :)

The game is awesome the most over scrutinized 16-bit beat em up by a mile. The overwhelming positives far outweigh the negatives.
This game is actually great on many respects (gameplay; soundtrack; branching paths...) and even visually it still looks interesting in many spots (the crystal cave or the eagle backdrops for instance) but it was held back by a limited cart size (8 meg, absurdly low for a 1993 beat 'em up) and short development time. but oddly and sadly it's only in mono! The only stereo effects in the game are during some magic transitions
I don't think the game looks like an absolute embarrassment? the Parallax scrolling in the crystal lava scene look pretty tight to me.
This game is definitely a different dev prong from the fantastic arcade games, but it's nowhere near as bad as people would purport.
I still like Golden Axe III, mostly because of the secret techniques you could use for each playable fighter.
Same for me! I enjoy the gameplay despite the poor graphics
Yes, i agree this was best from the serie
But it wasnt put on the Megadrive mini (heck 2 player mode for Golden Axe isnt even possible on the mini)
@@Spacefrisian I don't know which version of the mini you have, but in mine you can play 2-player mode in GA. You have to press start on the second pad on the main screen (before game modes are presented).
Friendly fire is a b*tch.
In recent years GA3 really grew on me. Yeah it's very different but in many gameplay aspects is probably the best of the trilogy
I actually like golden ax 3
Wow I never though this was a bad game at all, in my opinion this was the the best of the three, also the music was unreal.
I agree! I was amazed by the gameplay and was honestly blown away by the music.
Yes, I owned the game and was my favorite golden axe by far, i even play it these years ocasionally. In fact is on my top 20 favorite genesis games.
I liked this game also it feel like a upgrade from 1 and 2
this guy knows nothing about games man
Nah, he's entitled to his own opinion, and I can dig that. I liked this game when I was a kid too.
Golden Axe 2 is the embarassment, tbh. It's pretty much just a complete reskin of the first game.
That was my favourite, actually...
I'm starting to think that no one actually hates the games this guy says everybody hated
@@Raytheman581 You're right. Bare Knuckle III and Golden Axe III were not just like their predecessors. They were better!
@@Raytheman581 you'd have to say the same about Revenge of Death Adder then
I'd argue that this is a title that can benefit from the passage of time, since it's easier now to look at it as "more classic Golden Axe to enjoy" and not as "inferior to other beat-'em-ups of its era."
I miss the retro game style, when heroines was looking HOT and strong and beautiful!
Str8 up
@DejaVoodooDoll Play the outer worlds, and see what skyuru is talking about. Non of those girls were pretty.
Reminds me of the American Gladiators women.
It’s my personal favorite of the Golden trilogy, for the same reason Streets of Rage 3 is my favorite of the Streets trilogy : the battle system improved from the previous ones.
But Golden Axe II has the best soundtrack, I can recall all of them from my memories.
Golden Axe Revenge Of Death Adder blew all of them away.
My fav of the series highly underrated.
The bock was really hard to get used to. .
My fav to, i actualy did not like the 1 and 2 to much but 3 was amazing
One of most underrated Sega games ever.
I enjoyed the fact that you could block. Some of the backgrounds were a bit garish, but overall, it was a fun game.
It has:
Branching paths
Alternative endings
Interesting enemies
A better Golden Axe/Conan type of world feel
Varied stages
Interesting beasts
Wide variety of moves
Unique special moves per character
Good music
Nice character animations
Great intro
A decent length
Challenging difficulty
Better death sounds than the crappy cries in Golden Axe 2
I don't see why people don't like it. Perhaps they only judge it by the opening stage.
I really love Golden Axe I like to see it return one day ❤
Thanks to @tophat for helping me get through this lockdown.
Thanks for watching, expect three uploads a week during this turbulent period!
@@TopHatGamingManChannel I hope Dynamite Deka/Die Hard Arcade & it's "not sequel" Dynamite Deka 2/Dynamite Cop can cross your gentlemanly eyes for the Top Hat treatment.
Loved Golden Axe 3. Played it over and over. The soundtrack sound track still rings in my mind random times. Childhood in a nutshell.
why always my favorite games...always told worst????
That's why I never bother taking reviews too seriously and instead try everything on my own.
I've tried to play through this game many times, but I always end up putting it down. Maybe now that we're on this COVID-19 social distancing thing I may give it another shot.
Give it a chance ! You wont regret it.
@@prinzbach and with a friend
game is hard but once you mastered all the combat techniques its easily one of the best beat-em-ups ever made
I think its not only easily the best golden axe game, but also one of the top 20 best genesis games to play today, and in fact one of the 50 best beatemup ever, including arcade games. Way better than shallow games like konami games.
I still plan to play through this on The Genesis Collection on PC.
I liked all of them. It was a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” sort of game trilogy
I loved that game.
Never had problem with its bland graphics.
Also SoR3 was the best SoR for me.
Funny thing is...this is the best looking and my favorite of the series. Always has been.
I'm having a hard time seeing this game as anything bad.. i've already played through and beaten it a few times..
We on the same page brother brilliant post.
I liked Golden Axe 3 as a Mega Drive game but i don't know what Sega was smoking for not releasing The Revenge of Death Adder on Saturn.
I'd like that thumbnail pic as a background on my phone.
For real tho!!!!
It’s the best Golden Axe ever on an 8 meg cartridge! If this was done on a 16 meg or higher they would have as much detail as Street of Rage 2 or Shinobi 3!
And yet they charged the same price as streets of rage 2 and three?
@@ricky-sanchez $10 cheaper then those games in Japan, which isn't a huge savings considering SOR 2 was 16 Mb and SOR 3 was 24 Mb
I enjoy it.
Honestly, in my opinion, Golden Axe III has the best hitboxes of the whole series. It is really fun.
I remember playing this game I'm on a PlayStation 2 with the Sega collection. Now with my Xbox One I play this game off and on
Oddly enough however, despite being considered the worst of the trilogy by many people, Golden Axe 3 is the only game of the original Golden Axe trilogy that I actually enjoyed and loved.
I actually like this game, it's not perfect but I have fun playing it
AXE II was the best of the trilogy.
Only joking 😂 No hate here, Fellow Brits gotta stick together, but this is why Golden Axe III is amazing
GA III Intro.... BEST IN THE SERIES, That OST is the best OST in the series, I'd argue the console, the music is complete 🔥 and no talks about it
Dual CO-OP MAGIC! And co-op moves, awesome dual magic spells that make this game best played in co op like most beat'em ups of the time
GA III has a better story than I & II ... I honestly think people were mad you couldn't play as the dwarf with the Axe like you could in the first II, Different = Bad mentality... The story of Golden Axe III is about getting the Golden Axe back from the Prince of Darkness, with the dwarf Gillius geeza being retired at the start, if your actually lucky enough to beat the game, You get to retrieve the Golden Axe walk back thru every level you beat being cheerd on by free'd prisoners returning the the free'd Golden Axe to Gillius
The knock of the stage background to me is a bit of a reach compared to GA I & II, in the second level you are riding a run away bone cart, how is that not awesome! Crystal level looks beautiful, and the animals you can ride, the branching paths... So good!
Saying that Golden Axe III doesn't look as good as TMNT HH or SOR II I dont think is too fair, only because they are both going for the cartoony bombastic style, GA III never like, set out for a cartoony style and looks just as good as I & II
Never played Revenge of Death Adder, I hear that's supposedly the best one in the series and everyone is entitled to their opinions y'know... It's just a game lol
But Golden Axe III OST alone (if nothing else) is the best OST on the console
We need Golden Axe IV
I'm not sure I ever played part 3, But it doesn't look bad at all honestly..
Imagine if we eventually get a Golden Axe 4 after Streets of Rage 4
Golden Axe 3 doesn't honestly look like a bad game to me. It's underwhelming, and I can see where viewers and gamers at the time would have been disappointed that it wasn't more visually appealing. However, it does a number of small things differently and seems to play well, so I don't think it was a total loss.
III was the best. Nothing went wrong. The game released late in the console generation, and was abandoned. The end.
The end of a lackluster arcade series.
I've played it before. the gameplay was pretty good but the game itself was hard as hell.
There is tons of depth in the game. Each character has tons of attacks in the game. The enemy a.i. gets progressively more difficult and start attacking you in different ways later I the game.
The graphics are far better than in game 2, the skeletons are great, the beasts look better.... why so much hate?
Streets of rage 3 was waaaayyyy better than this Golden axe asset flip.
this game was nice. soundtrack was nice, and characters and paths varied. of course there is laziness but still the game is solid for 93. still a good beatem all and a good alternative of capcom dungeons and dragons tower of doom on atcade from capcom
GA3 was a decent enough game, and still worth playing.
Thank you, thank you for all that do. I am in love with your fighting and beat em up content. Keep on keeping on.
Embarrassment? Nah. Actually, this game is pretty decent and has many memorables soundtracks. This one is better than GA2, but this is just my opinion.
Trivia: The artist that made the video game box art was Boris Vallejo, the famous Peruvian fantasy sci-fi artist.
With an elephant man tumbling in your corner you can rise above any challenge , even the fire at Dave's house
Hey, wait a minute! Do you wanna to say that someone didn't like this game?! But it's a perfect game! What's wrong with you, people?!
It wasn't a horrible game, it just had bad graphics and gameplay.
@@ricky-sanchez it's just ridiculous.
May not be the best, but I still really like GAIII !
Golden Axe III only used an 8 megabit cartridge; in contrast, Streets of Rage 2 used a 16 megabit cart.
This would definitely explain the bland graphics.
Sega needs to release an entire collection of Golden Axe 😁😁😁
This is the best in the trilogy! You didn´t even mention double magic and attacks, even this articles you showed, proving how barely you know the game! Such shame, all the problems you said about background and bosses the last 2 entrys of the game suffer from the SAME thing! GA3 is the BEST if you´re an actually player.
Golden Axe 3 bad? What?
It's the best in the series!
Great game, my only complaint is that ai jump attack way too often.
I don't care what anyone says... This is my favorites of the series.
Admit it...the thumbnail is what brought you here XD
2 Silly characters design (Blanka and Thunder cat? really?)
3 Animation looks so funny not as strong and solid attack as the first and second.
It wasn't laziness, the cart wasn't big enough.
Was not a 16Mb card?
@@kwkfortythree39 Nope, over got the uncompressed rom right here from the Steam Genesis collection. It's only 8 mb
@@jeremygregorio7472 Then they should have used a 16 Mb cartridge. Besides, Gunstar Heroes had 8 Mb and was a master piece, it was Sega who made the game, not a small rookie company with little knowledge of the Megadrive hardware.
You don't need 16 to do at least a decent game. The background tiles are very very basic, every time I see it I've feelings of an unfinished game.
Streets of Rage had the claw boss twice.
Three times actually. XD
@@jballs5434 yeah but on last stage all the bosses are more like normal foes. No special music etc.
That werepanther was my character of choice. His moveset was so effective. I also liked the VS mode as well.
1988/9 graphics in 1993/4.☹️☹️☹️
So are just saying this game is bad because certain people said it's bad?
This is my first title that I played in the trilogy, and i was blown away by everything in it. Well, i still often playing it now once in a while compare to the first two
I think it looked pretty good actually. Better than the previous ones.
