Sorry but Slash as the boss over clay man was a great move on snes. People love Slash!
agreed
Cementman was a cheap boss. He will always spam that clay throwing move, and to make matters worse, it triggers the turtle's obnoxious dialogue, "Aw, man! I just HAD a shower." Over and over and over and over and over. The SNES version isn't just superior because it has a better boss with a better attack and TMNT name recognition, but I think the fact it lacks vocal samples makes the game a lot less annoying.
For real and he fits the time period
Yeah. If I want to see a bunch of unrelated to the series creatures, I'd play the original NES game. Somehow I feel the SNES port was Konami giving themselves a do-over. How wasn't Pirate Bebop and Rocksteady obvious enough to include in the first place? Not to mention series staple Rat King makes his only video game appearance, and on top of one of the action figure vehicles as well. Sure, I agree that you lose the quarter draining level of difficulty, and everything runs a tad slower, but overall a much more fun experience for Turtles fans. And no bad actress as April O' Neil telling you that the turtles have "vanquished the ARK villain known as Shredder."
Agreed
As a Genesis kid back in the day, I have way more memories of playing Streets of Rage 1/2/3, and TMNT Hyperstone Heist.
Same here
@@detectingretro6313 As someone who is a massive chiptune fan(I have an HTPC, and on the reg play C64 SID tunes through my 5.1 Dolby Digital+ setup in my game room), I should have also have said that overall I like the Genesis Yamaha FM sound chip better than the SNES sound chip, and that the SOR games, along with TMNT Hyperstone Heist just sound so much better to me.
TMNT(SNES) is better than TMNTHH(SG)...And, I've never seen attacks as special up until that point...In addition, Ninja Warriors on SNES is even better than that. That's number 1.
@@CommodoreFan64What?! The char/action audio is mono-like! This is not a SNES flaw: listen to the music and action of FF for example! When a YTer tried to duplicate KI on a Gen, the gameplay and graphics were fine. However, the audio was not! The advanced audio was either non-existent or very mono-like!
Back in the day I never had anyone compare SOR to TMNT. Everyone loved them both and felt they were different
*"MY TOES, MY TOES!!!!!!"* 😢😢😢
Sewer surfin'
*"AHHHH! SHELL SHOCK."*
Damn, did not notice that we are now in the year Neon Night Riders takes place, and it's nowhere NEAR as depicted in that stage. Where my hoverboards at??
Haha, I've been saying that since 2001!!!
@@jons9239 I KNOW RIGHT!?!??!?!
Corona virus halted the production.
I keep hearing "Bury my shell at wounded knee."
Love it! Nastalgia in a quote lol.
I must point out that the one aspect that separates X-Men arcade from all other beat em ups is its ability for SIX co-op players and TWO screens, thus cementing its status as the best arcade beat em up ever. Do the math.
Can't argue with you on that one sir. I was fortunate that our local arcade had a 6 player cab and beat the game several times with all 6 players on board. It was always extra epic with all 6 characters on screen.
I've never played it, but Guardian Heroes on the Saturn had 6 players.
The new turtles game now has it as well
This is true but that was until Shredder's Revenge hit and does 6 player better with more options than X-Men.
Turtles in times had some of the best music and a fighting combat in gaming history period.
The box art for TMNT THE MANHATTAN PROJECT, is such lie, there are no Triceratons in the game, not a single one to be found but one is clearly front and present in the SWEET BAD ASS BOX ART. How neat would it have been if they used a few Triceratons as grunts and the Triceraton toy we had as a state boss??
Marlon Sanchez False Advertising at it's Finest.
How dare they 😆
I think you've under represented what TMNT has in it's moveset arsenal. There's a lot more going on.
nsignific Only on the SNES version, much like the NES original. In both, you can actually have input on how the character’s moves and abilities work.
Had to think about it, but even little things like how Raph is faster than Don in the SNES version or how the screen throw move isn’t random when compared to the arcade help to make the SNES version superior, at least when it comes to the little things.
He also didn't mention the flips, slide and back attacks.
@@osurpless I like how there's a run button the the Genesis version. Snes you can't run on demand, instead you need to hold foward for a few seconds.
@@Lightblue2222 that's not true. Snes u had to change the settings to have the run button option
@@DGJ206 oh ok nice I didn't realise you could!
Streets of rage 2 is a master piece nd still to this day.
I know I had both games no game tops streets of Rage 2
@@KRedgrape Absolutely no game better than SOR2 in the 16 bit era
@@furiousgtribal4325 Final Fight arcade game beats any brawler, and Streets of Rage just stole everything from it.
@@Syklonus I understand that Final Fight is the original. I give em that, but Streets Of Rage did everything better
Turtles in time is my favorite
Could you do the Spiderman Separation Anxiety game next? That was also an awesome comic book beat'em up game!
Maximum Carnage is better
@@CasualGamers Especially the SNES edition with the music!
I’d rate TMNT Mega Drive 9/10, TMNT SNES 10/10, SOR2 11/10. Sorted.
On that scale, in my opinion SoR1 and Final Fight CD both crank it up to 12...
Yes...and yes...and yes
The Turtles beat em ups are to shallow and definitely better for casual players. People who enjoy more depth in their beat em ups aren't ever going to hold them in such high regard.
Turtles in time 1/10 bad animation and stiffed controls
Streets of rage 2 10/10
SOR 2+3, or more specifically Bare Knuckle 3(find an english translation rom), are the best beat em ups of all time! There are newer beat em ups that have taken cues and evolved the beat em up formula since SOR that are a lot of fun. For me though, nothing has been able to make SOR feel obsolete. Its simply too perfect.
I agree 100% I also feel like in different ways 2d beat'em ups after sor3 have taken certain gameplay concepts and mechanics from it not to mention streets of rage remake is the best 2d beat'em up of all time imo
Is the commentary audio deliberately mostly in the left channel?
indeed, very annoying
I genuinely thought my right speaker had blown.
it sounded weird, thx for letting us know
i was trying to fix my right speaker already
He just forgot to set the voice to mono. Maybe a compressor was used too. Annoying though.
As a kid it blew my mind that up+jump in SOR2 would let your character land on his/her feet if ever thrown. This mechanic was never explained in game or manual either so when a kid in school read it in a magazine it was world changing.
I love that SoR4 continued this mechanic and even lets you land on your feet if ever knocked in the air.
Streets of Rage 2 or Turtles in Time? They have always been equal to me. You can't go wrong with either game.
TMNT for me
Sor2 wins
I like em both but SOR is better, there all dope the sor series
@TET - COM like choosing which child you like better.
I did not own a Genesis or Super Nintendo growing up. I sometimes visited a friend's house to play their copy of the games. Both were alright. But I totally agree TMNT did not innovate more than SoR did, it complimented it's concepts and was like it's rival, but was more it's equal even though neutered in it's presentation.
TMNT the arcade, and X-Men have special places in my gaming heart. It was a different time. And Streets of Rage was that push to become more, even though on a home console.
I never felt Genesis or SNES were better than one another, but they offered a unique & experience depending on the titles within it's library.
I wish Konami re released the Snes and Hyperstone Heist versions with arcade assets.
There is no game that can compete with SoR2. The characters (cheekily they nicked a lot of the design from the FF template - but also made them their own in the process), the tone, the music, the way it paralleled films of the late 80s early 90s. It just totally nailed it. Turtles in Time is an amazing game. Just like other scrollers such as Cadillacs and Dinosaurs - there’s some serious competition. But man, Sega totally nailed SoR!!!!
Without doubt sega’s best game. I love sega’s arcade franchises especially stuff like last bronx and the virtua fighter series, and am a massive shenmue fanboy. But the one game I come back to and enjoy just as much every time I put it on, is Streets of Rage 2. It’s literally one of a tiny handful of games that are timeless for me.
Another awesome vid, dude!!
Turtles in Time will always have a special place in my heart. My dad and I played it when I was a child as I do with my son. I do own both as I feel SOR 2 and TMNT 4 are both great in their own right.
The arcade version of turtles in time might be a little better, but i still love streets of rage 2 more!
The one-on-one arena gameplay mode in Turtles in Time was also fun!
Wish I could afford more Turtles games!
I can respect that. It's a toss up between the two for me too and a much fair comparison between fighters as opposed to SOR vs Final Fight, in which the 3rd game in the series stood out the most but is still dominated by Streets of Rage overall. As I see it, SOR2 is the best beat 'em up for the Genesis and TMNT IV is the best beat 'em up for the SNES and the winner of the two simply boils down to personal preference.
I love Final Fight Tough. Gotta play Japanese versions of all console beat-em-ups to bypass the obnoxious censorship. Same goes for the Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle series & Jaleco's brawlers/Rushing Beat series. So much censorship in the western releases; U.S. & Europe.
My toe! My toe!
I have both TMNT in time arcade and SNES versions and I like the SNES best because of the technodrome and rat king levels. Tossing the foot clan at the screen is soooo satisfying!
I agree, I prefer the SNES version too. The addition of extra bosses like Bebop and Rocksteady, that inventive Shredder boss fight and the Neon Night Riders mode 7 level it just feels like a more complete game in comparison to the arcade version.
Not to mention SNES version has far superior controls.
Very true! SNES Tmnt for the win! 🏆
Also you neglected to mention some of the additional moves the snes version of turtles in time offers over its arcade counterpart like enhance character unique attacks (albeit at energy loss) specialized Aerial kicks that can be pulled off, a powerful running flying kick or a more exploitable stun you can inflict on a lot of the enemies, personally I disagree with your opinion especially concerning the music in the two games, but I also respect your opinion
Glad you picked SOR2 over TMNT. I wholeheartedly agree with you about SOR2 combat mechanics. I love both games but it was leagues ahead of all other games in the genre for it's time.
From the perspective of a SNES fanboy that idolized Turtles in Time, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt that SOR2 is the better game.
Dude...
Let's talk about your name
Attack on the clones..lol
Kevin Durant burner accounts
Tough choice, I guess it depends on what mood you're in. There is a nice compromise though. There's the Streets of Rage 2 hack when you can play as a Ninja Turtle
What?
Good video! I appreciate your fair analysis of both games. I have to say though I disagree with your summation that the controls are just copies of other beat-em-ups. You may not have had as much time to spend with Turtles in your review as you have with SoR2 over the years, but there are subtleties to the moves you can perform in Turtles with just two buttons. For example, your aerial attacks change depending on what point of the jump animation you’re in, or how you can perform sliding attacks and others based on the timing of your inputs. There’s really a lot of variety! I respect you like SoR2 more, but Turtles will always remain king in my heart. 😁
I would have liked this more without the comparison to streets of rage 2 if anything it should be compared to another licensed beat em up like the Punisher from Capcom and that games arcade and Genesis port.
That music for streets of rage is top notch. Turtles in Time just has more fondness to me
There's no way this is better than Streets of Rage 2 lol.
Riight! 😄
Turtles was great, but not better than SOR2. It wasn't even the best beat em up on SNES. Final Fight 3 was the best beat em up on SNES
Street of Rage 2 It is the control and variety of moves for me that allows the player an opportunity to grow and get better in the game over multiple completions.
As for arcade beat em ups. My list is
1. Final fight
2. Golden axe revenge of
3. Xmen
4. Turtles in time
5. Simpson's
YEAH
My sleeper hits for arcade beat 'em ups include Battle Circuit and Tecmo Knights/Wild Fang (two dramatically different games, to be sure).
Cadillacs and dinosaurs
Solid list. I'd add a later title with alien vs predator
Double Dagon
As much as I love Streets of rage 2, I love teenage mutant Ninja Turtles brand more when it comes to the arcade games
I had a SNES as a kid, so Turtles in Time is my favorite.
Better then arcade and genesis imo. The music, lvl's are super!
My friend Jamil and I used to play Turtles in Time almost everyday after school.
What about Virtua Fighter 2 vs Tekken 3? They're both some of the best games in their series released in the mid 90s & represent a separate console war of Saturn vs Playstation
Hey, which do you prefer? I personally prefer Virtua Fighter 2 because it's the innovator of all proper 3d fighting games. Plus the complexity of mastering the characters, the blocking system, counter attacks and the most important thing of all. VF 2 came out in 93 I think? Tekken 3 didn't come out until 1999 (again I think, I'm not sure) though tekken 3 is easier to pick up and play, more characters, secrets, special modes and my favourite character Bruce Lee AKA forest law. I hate how the later tekken games made him look less like the real bruce lee. I think even Virtua Fighter 3 came out in arcades before 1999, which was graphically amazing. Think the dreamcast version is more of a let down though gameplay wise
I would love a MAD story of Sengoku 3 if there is one. That game is truly the fine red wine of side scroller best em ups imo
The arcade version of turtles in time might compare to streets of rage 2, but i still love streets of rage 2 more!
Cool opinion, it's wrong but.....
Acrade version plays worse than SNES.
@@Imgema It's a shame the SNES version only supports 2 players, because it's really superior to the arcade in many ways.
Agree. Streets of Rage 2 is the best beat em up of all time. Been replaying again but the 3D version on the 3DS which is also an amazing experience.
Brilliant episode, I've been playing Turtles board games for weeks but now I'm in the mood for some Turtles in Time (on my Arcade1Up TMNT cabinet). I didn't realise how many cool additions there were in the SNES port, I assumed it was more or less identical to the arcade with the Mega Drive port being the one that was changed. Nice Palpatine quote you slipped in there too. :)
Other great Snes Beat em ups would include
1. King of Dragons
2. Knights of the Round
3. Final Fight 2
4. Final Fight 3
I liked Golden Axe 1&3 better than KoD and KotR, and SoR1 & Final Fight CD better than Final Fight 2&3...
Yeah. I enjoy all the games despite some issues. I woukd take KOD over Golden Axe and Golden Axe 3 anyday though. I like SOR 1 and Final Fight Cd as well. I really enjoyed Streets of Rage 3 and Tmnt Hyperstone Heist as well. I just really enjoy the Genre.
random af, but that Simpsons arcade game is dope af 🔥
From memory at the time. A friend had a mega drive and I had the snes. We were both envious of each others games. He always wanted to play turtles in time and I wanted to play streets of rage 2. We often swapped consoles for this reason. 2 great games
It’s a no contest. Turtles in Time was an arcade port. Streets of Rage 2 was built for the Mega Drive. Doesn’t mean Turtles was a bad game, but it is what it is.
Streets of Rage 2. Best game ever. I can remember getting my aunty to order it for me from her Littlewoods club book and paying for it from my pocket money over a period of months. Even to this day, its a game I still go back and play, (not my original copy though unfortunately) and have bought numerous times on phones, and Megadrive compilations across systems. Even Streets of Rage 3 isn't as good. 28 years after release, I still hum the soundtrack to myself, and I'll hear tracks on the radio that remind me of Streets of Rage 2. The only game that has come anywhere near, never got a proper release, and that of course is Streets of Rage Remake. Actually, I think Streets of Rage remake deserves it's own video about its history. I think that it should have got an official release instead of the upcoming Streets of Rage 4. I haven't got very high expectations for that, but it might surprise me when it does eventually release.
Yeh I be humming them beats in my head too. I heard songs that sound like Streets Of Rage in the radio too. Streets Of Rage 2 the goat of all Beat em ups. I rented that game every time I went to blockbuster
This NEEDS to come to the SNES Console on Switch...how is it that these games are not being re-rleased?
Fantastic video! Extremely interesting and informative!
@TopHatGamingMan
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 blessing to you brother!
Appreciate you for the video game play & commentary. You gave me a flashback to my youth. Can you do a video on Michael Jackson moonwalker arcade game vs platform game?
I never really played SOR back in the day, but I played and owned Turtles In Time. Beat it several times and loved it. It's one of my favorite SNES games ever.
The Cowabunga Collection was just announced and now I can play this game soon!!!
I can’t get into streets of rage... love the TMNT games way more. Apparently, I am in minority, but hey it is what it is and I like what I like.
I loved SOR 2 it’s a great game deep combat I played it on Dreamcast I played it on Genesis on PS3 and PS4 I play it on my phone lol. Turtles in time though man I love that game so many great memories I get more excited at the thought and conversation about Turtles it’s just a really fun game in its own ways with its own deep combat maybe not as apparently intricate especially in two player like SOR. It’s got body slams dash tackles slides flips and specials. I play SOR 2 more overall but Turtles 4 was always more sought after. I had 1 cartridge but there aren’t any options to play it legally on any other systems like SOR2 which is way more accessible. That’s one thing about licensed games I can’t stand.
I see your point. Doesn't seem crazy at all but I still have more fun with Turtles in time...
He's obviously a SEGA fan... it's a few things he neglected to mention about the Turtle's moveset which added to their versatility.
The run, most importantly. Still, all the Konami bmu's had pretty limited movesets.
I only had to listen to this video to see it. Honestly, I’ve probably beaten this game dozens of times (I’m sure I’ll come back to it again in the future), so it’s about as seared into my brain as anything could ever be.
This is a super hard call because I have great memories with both games but I'll give it to SOR 2, for one simple reason, the variety of the combat mechanics every character in SOR 2 felt different. The Turtles were too similar if it did what they did in Manhattan Project and gave the turtles a few unique moves, then it would take the win
Also did they ever port Simpsons Arcade and the Xmen arcade to home? that seemed like a missed opportunity
They didnt ever do any other port of Simpsons arcade except the virtual console in 2010's. Xmen Arcade same, to my knowldege.
Caius Madison The Simpsons was ported to MS-DOS, thats the where I played it first.
@@gaffa2002 Nice, didnt know that. Its largely thought to have no home port.
Love how all your stories are 'mad'. Never got to play this as a kid, looks like a seriously underrated game.
Buy a pandora 11s around 120 150 icludes this and all the classic arcade version of games
This is the best video game channel ever thanks for the content
Also as much as many of us would like to forget it, reshelled was a thing
I never got to play this game back in the day, but TMNT Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis/Mega Drive seems to be based on it.
Crimebusters vs Pit Fighter - the machines used to stand side by side in my local arcade... oh, the decisions!!!
It almost doesn't seem fair using music as a category when Streets of Rage 2 is one of the contenders.
Turtles in time was freakin awesome. Yeah tell me something I don't know
"Turtles in Time" For the SNES was one of the first games I got for it back in 92.
turtles in times being my all time fav game that i kept preciously from my childhood, i although would totally agree with genuine thoughts that SOF 2 is a cut above..that being said, maybe it's just me but i prefer the soundtrack of the first street of rage… great video pal , hello from France ;)
Turtles in time is a top 5 SNES game and much better than streets of rage 2.
Streets of Rage 2 in my opinion was done exceptionally well. I've probably beat that game more than any other game in my life.
I've been trying out every beat-'em-up I can get my hands on for the past few years now and I agree that SOR2 is untouchable. TMNT is great but I've always found the controls in Konami beat-'em-ups a little... "slippery" is the only word I can think of. I also think SOR2 benefits from being designed for consoles and not an arcade port. Arcade games were designed to get players to keep pumping change into the cabinets and I find the spectre of this tends to remain in most arcade ports, with some frustating mechanics still present. You can really feel that a lot of time was spent on SOR2's mechanics to make them feel satifysing. That said I really wish Konami would release it's beat-'em-ups for modern consoles, like Capcom has been doing.
Oh man great vid but but you didn’t mention the best thing about the snes port in that fight with shredder in the techno drone you damage him by throwing enemies at the screen giving you reason to use the mechanic from the arcade it’s the best boss fight because of that I’m thinking about missing my arcade 1up because even though I love the arcade version the snes version is absolutely awesome as well
North American RUclipsr oh completely agree that’s why you gotta have them all lol
Turtles in Time was the first Turtles game I played growing up. Finally got to play The Hyperstone Heist a couple months ago. Too bad we'll never get rereleases of these games or the Arcade games in a collection.
Never say never, lol
@@chrisstevenson9178 Yeah, I was wrong lol. Didn’t expect The Cowabunga Collection, or Shredder’s Revenge to get announced/released when I made this comment.
Hip,hip, hooray for SoR! Can't wait for you to review SoR4 when that comes out. 👍👌🙂
I love your perspectives. Very entertaining.
Please check TMNT 3 on NES it is the best TMNT I ever played
The Manhattan Project was 🔥💯
I love that game!
Manhattan project was better than turtles in time in my opinion.🌝
Great video on a beat em up I love to this day. Thanks for the info!
Did anyone ever encounter the six player X-Men arcade game? That shit was lit.
I wish for a Konami Collection that includes all 4 TMNT games (along with the arcade versions of Ninja Turtles 2 & 4) and the Simpsons Arcade game ported to the Nintendo Switch. I would buy that day one if it ever happens.
Best beat 'm up ever: Guardian Heroes from the mighty Treasure. Close second: Dungeons & Dragons: Shadows over Mystara
X-men also had a six player double monitor cabinet
Why is the sound quality so bad?
My favorite TMNT game is the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle for GBA.
Punisher, Cadilacs and Dinosaurs, Street of Rage , Final fight, Burning fight all have the same style with a few tweaks but I think the Turtles game was more refreshing .
I never even thought to compare these two games.
I really enjoy watching your videos. But in this video, the commentary was mostly on the left speaker, I had to switch my PC to mono audio to get through the end.
the great thing was that we had a ton of games, beat'em ups too, nowadays only vanillaware puts up some quality ones, other than indies, the adventure tmnt games on game boy were awesome also
I think both TMNTIV and SoR2 are excellent beat 'em ups. No love for Final Fight 3 tho?
Final fight 3 was best beat em up on SNES
There's probably much less nostalgia for it. Because hardly anybody played FF3 when it first came out. It had limited distribution (at least in the US) and most people were moving on to the Playstation or Saturn by that point. And magazines gave it terrible reviews at the time.
FF 3 made some great improvements to the characters movesets. The lack of any challenge, chronic slowdown and 3 enemies are just some of the reasons it's not a serious contender.
I think you hit it at the start when you said it is/was more geared towards a younger audience where SoR definitely has a more gritty, adult feel & look.
Streets of rage, final fight, turtles in time, super double dragon (SNES), batman returns (SNES), rival turf and that's it.
Interesting topic, I’ve never considered comparing both games. Turtles in time is very nostalgic for me, while I had an excellent experience with streets of rage 2 as an adult retro game collector. I personally think this one is too close to call and comes down to personal preference. Personally...I’d give it to Turtles in Time. As I enjoyed this game as a kid, and no matter how many times I play it today, I still love it 🐢 ❤️
I remember me & a friend beat this game in 1 sitting. Great memories
My left ear loved this video. Can't say the same thing about the right though.
That is a bad ass cover for TMNT.i.t... the turtle's look awesome, and angry
I like both but streets of rage felt more solid like hands on, hard to explain. But both titles were good but tmnt can't see street of rage in soundtracks and overall feel in gameplay. But weapon wise the utilization was better with the turtles but it was weapon based. The better comparison would be golden axe to tmnt. And tmnt wins that
This was my GO TO beat em up as a kid in the 90's
The Part about gaming with shorter load times aged like fine milk.
I think you should have started with the first arcade TMNT before going for the sequel, but still good video, keep them up!
It's a classic and I still love to play it to this day. But it's definitely not better than SoR2. The only beat-em up I would put above SoR2 are maybe some of the River City Ransom games and that's only because of the RPG elements.
