A clear and quick guide to installing a Ryzen CPU and the stock heatsink/fan/cooler supplied with many AM4/Ryzen CPU's. Please note the procedure for installation is the same on AM4 and AM5 motherboards, both have an identical design. AM4 coolers can be used on AM5 boards too. The only difference is the AM5 CPUs are using LGA (landing grip array) compared to the AM4 pins which are present on the CPU.
The AMD Wraith coolers come boxed with many CPU's but require the brackets to be removed from the motherboard to fit the cooler which screws directly to the back plate. I show you how to install the CPU and the AMD stock cooler.

Spot on dude. Thanks for not flapping about for ten minutes and just getting the job done
No worries I can't stand the padded out how to videos either ;-)
Mr Baz Reviews I have to say this is the best install video I’ve seen, how do you not have more subscribers!!?! Thank you so much man
AMD didn't even show how to install the included cooler, the only somewhat confusing part
I guess it is kinda off topic but do anyone know a good site to stream new tv shows online ?
@Cesar Bentley Lately I have been using Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
Thanks so much! Just in case you guys didn't know, if you are trying to replace a cpu, the back plate can fall down without you knowing so you have to take off the side panel!
Great tip!
That's what I was struggling with in fact.
Life saver
love you
thank you bro
"can't over-tighten" Thanks, those were the magic words I was looking for, just like the half a million other people who were afraid to hear "CRACK" and smelling burnt silica on-1st-boot.
Dude I spend like 2 hours thinking about the screws. You just said that I can't over tighten you are the best.
I used a drill and i over tightened it literally cannot unscrew
@@BUHDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Does it still turn though while not unscrewing? If so, hold a fingernail under the cap of the screw while **slowly** unscrewing it.
Worth a shot if you ever need it to get unstuck.
I need the same tutorial but for removal😂 they turn in place but none is getting any looser
@@glacialimpala Try putting your fingernail under the head of the screw. Or a very thin screwdriver (not recommended as it can scratch the soldering meant to ground the screwholes)
The most pain in the ass to install cooler I've ever come across with. Thanks.
It's not the best design!
@@MrBazReviews Yes, Intel has lot better cooling designs. AMD makes better processors but a lot crappier cooling mounts.

Thank you for actually explaining it and not just playing music and not telling when to stop tightening the screw love it dude. Deserves a sub
Lol I'm not into padding out videos. Thanks for the comment sub appreciated
Thanks. I think I need to tighten my cooler more, not sure I've got higher temps than expected. I found the back plate + spring loaded really tricky to install, so knowing that I can't overtighten is golden to hear.
Glad it helped
Peace of mind wrapped up into 1 min 55 Seconds. Thank you!!
Exactly! And you didn't have 10 minutes of padding to try to get more ad revenue ;-D
Thank you sir! Heard a noise a half hour ago. Didn’t realize it was the back plate!! Lol
It is the back plate!
For those of you having a very hard time fitting the spring, I've spent hours trying to fit it just to figure out that my motherboard or the cooler itself had a back piece (mounted on the back of the motherboard) to fit the screws better. I'd advice to call someone to hold backplate while another person screws (don't be afraid to push it). Hope it helps someone!
Yes that is shown holding the plate is a requirement!
Thank you so much. I spent like an hour trying to get the screws in before Googling. This tip worked perfectly
This comment helped me stop Trying for an hour
This!
Spent an hour trying to figure out how to do this. Thanks a ton!
Take the mobo off, hold the back plate! Thx a bunch!!!
You saved my life. Even if there are possible problems that you didn't cover in the video, you explained everything else that had to be explained right in the comments.
Thank you very much, living legend 🙏
The only problems are if you are using a bad mobo maker ;-D This fits super easy on Gigabyte boards ultra fast no issues
Probably the worst design for a cpu fan in my opinion. At least in terms of modern fans.
Def room for some improvement so I'd agree on that one
What do you expect of factory cooler, it`s free and do a good job if you don`t temper with oc.
did you see the intel stock cooler?
@@keyrix8687 Only few times every single day, i repair pc`s almost 20 years...
Thanks for the video. After you mount the cooler you can unscrew the fan and rotate it so the AMD logo is on top.
You can
Thank's. This is the first video that helped me understand that I needed that bottom plate to provide standoffs to attach the heatsink/cooler
Yes it's easy to overlook it! The plate is pretty important!
Outstanding. Someone else spent 10 minutes talking about stuff that was unimportant to the task at hand.
That's why I made it! Obviously they were trying to pad it out to get more ad revenue ;-D
I just want to get the information across as quickly as possible that seems to be what people want!

Thank you! I was confused about whether I needed some standoff or something when I removed the plastic brackets. Much appreciated!
No worries! All you need is to hold the back plate in place (or use a book etc)
It's not the best design they ever made, the brackets being there confuses a lot of people.
Took me waaaaaaay too long to realize the bracket fell off and I was screwing into nothing, even though you mentioned that could happen. Good video!
Design could be improved no question
The metal plate thing that holds the CPU cooler was flaying around behind the motherboard, I was sweating for 5 minutes wondering why the the cooler won't screw in 😂. I had to hold the plate with one hand and screw the cooler with the other.
This figured out my problem. I sat there for 20 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong and a guy with a Bowser profile picture saves my life.

Holy fuck it’s refreshing to see an in depth video that isn’t 10 minutes long blabbering on about how to put in the cpu
They do that to add more adverts, personally I can't stand padded out videos so I just get on with it ;-D

Thanks for not going on for 20 minutes really helpful
No problem I can't stand padded out videos either!
Posting my personal issue/solution: I was having difficulty reinstalling the CPU cooler after taking it off because the spring screws would not reach down far enough to contact the threads. I thought I wasn't applying enough pressure to reattach the spring screws, but it turns out that the backplate on the reverse of the motherboard (that has the contact points for the spring screws) had fallen off & out of reach. Duh.
It's OK we all make mistakes, yes the back plate can be tricky I just use a book to hold it in place
Thanks! This was super helpful because this is my first time building my pc and I thought I was doing something wrong, dang spring
Yes it's not too obvious maybe they could have done an easier way to fit it, but glad it helped you
For a guy who knows very little about hardware, and software for that matter, this is amazing stuff. All of the "stuff" that goes into a computer is just mind boggling!
It looks worse than it is
If only you knew how much you helped me, MY DUMBASS DIDNT KNOW THE BACKPLATE NEEDED TO BE THERE, THE SCREWS WOULDNT FIT I WAS SO MAD IVE WASTED 5 HOURS!!!! THANK YOUUUUUUU

Thank you, simple and to the point! Update, after taking your advice I had mine together in just about a minute. Thank you again!
What happened to to the motherboard backside bracket, did you remove it or kept it for the stock cooler?
Asking cuz i bought an used x570 prime-p and had no backside bracket , pretty sure i can't install the stock cooler without it.
You need the bracket as shown in the video the cooler screws into it
@@MrBazReviews i fucking knew it, thanks for reply.
well thanks for not giving a 10 minute intro and also the explanation is very clear great job
I can't stand padded out videos on things like this so I did this short one!
omg thank you so much. i wasted half an hour trying to fit in the cooler
Not a problem glad it got sorted
My screws for the cooler aren't low enough to touch the bottom of the mobo :(
Edit: I figured it out, but I have no idea what I did lol it was a while ago
Another Edit: I remember, it turns out there wasn't the baseplate on the back, it was freely roaming around my PC instead of screwed in lol
yea ikr have experience it also in my case i broke the metal spring of the screw so it will go down freely. but dont do this
I had to put quite a bit of pressure on mine in order for it to get seated properly. It took like 30 mins of going easy on it before I snapped and went all in lol.
Lol
Does the backplate come with the cpu or the motherboard??
Comes pre-fitted to board
Mr Baz Reviews so do you need to screw in the cpu then add the backplate?
had cold sweat installing this, there is a bow in the back of my motherboard, a very tight fit.
That's not right shouldn't bow out the board, re-attach it, the back plate should be flat it just screws into that.
@@MrBazReviews the backplate is flat. it's the motherboard that's bowed lol. ordering an aio, this stock cooler is giving me 58 degrees idle.
thank you, ive been building a pac and i needed a tutorial on the cpu cooler installation, this helped.
Not a problem glad it helped you saves a bit of time hopefully!
when i screw it in one side just goes up and i cant screw the other side
Make sure it's on a flat surface shouldn't have a problem or get someone to hold the backplate whilst you screw it up. Just slightly screw one, then go to the next one rather than screwing one in fully
that because you screwed one side too much it stayed at air and required too much pressure right.
Screw one screw in just until it is entered and turning, then start on the opposite corner to ensure the component is going on evenly. Once you have all screws entered tighten one then opposite corner. Work it in evenly until all screws are secure.
Haha, I had this issue and it took me over an hour and thirty minutes to get it seated properly. PAIN IN THE BUTT.

It has happened to many before!
Thank you so much!! I recently built my own custom pc and my fan fell out 20 minutes ago😅 Now I know what the problem is...

Thanks, man! After watching your video, I ditched my over-cautiousness and got two other screws all the way in for the CPU. Hopefully, I won't suffer the heating problem with the Ryzen 5 3600 again. (I experienced it only once right after mounting it)
I know some of the boards were pushing the voltage a bit high on the new Ryzens, so might be worth checking for a BIOS update on the mobo. If you still have heat issues maybe re grease it with premium compound, or third party ones the Artic series is pretty good and not expensive. They do tend to run hotter than the 1/2 gen Ryzens, but some were running way hotter so try the BIOS route if you have problems first
@@MrBazReviews Right on, always a good idea to get things up-to-date. Everything runs fine on my ROG Strix B450-F Gaming, even through a modern game on high settings, for now.

I can’t believe this was made 5 years ago and am5 only came out a few months ago
Because the AM4 and AM5 boards use the same method to attach the CPU, the only difference is the CPU doesn't have pins on the AM5 boards, the rest is identical. I guess AMD did it so more CPU coolers can be used, without changing the design. Lucky for me too I suppose!
I made my build and used it for 4h+ and at night when i was sleeping I just thought did i screwed the fan to tight 🤣🤣 so here i am
Lol if it's not on properly nothing bad happens the CPU will throttle down
thanks for the video. i was really confused about those black plastic bracket things on the motherboard and was wondering if they can be removed or if i have to buy new cpu cooler
They're just there mostly for holding the back plate in place, most third party coolers have their own fitting just like the AMD one

short and good videos like this are amazing
Thanks I really hate padded out videos and decided to make one that just got on with it!
Don't know how some manage to make a 10+ minute video on this but hey I won't! ;-)
I literally cried trying to install this damn thing. LOL
It does seem to freak a few people out perhaps they could have done a better job on the design ;-D
Hey man, first of all thank you for the tutorial. I've recently upgraded to 5600G and so far the performance's been really good.
But may I ask you a question? My Wraith Stealth cooler does not have the copper circle block like yours. And when I tried searching for the Wraith Spire shown, almost every listing does not have copper thingies also. Is this just the updated 'cheaper' design or something? Because I also notice that the temp's going crazy, like 70-80C when gaming using it.
Thank you
Later ones have aluminium only no copper core (some higher end ones still do)
That CPU has the GPU built in, so temps are a bit higher 70-80C when gaming isn't unusual, the max. temp is 95 degrees. You could try a better thermal paste Arctic MX range is pretty good 4/5/6 etc. That could knock 4-5 degrees off. I wouldn't be worried about the temps on that CPU
@@MrBazReviews Thank you very much for the quick reply! I already use MX-4 as the paste, although the number still worries me a bit. I think I'll invest in a budget tower later, but nice to hear that it shouldn't be a cause for concern.
Thanks I know how to take it off but thanks to the old thermal paste it had dried onto the cpu and was stuck I’m amazed the cpu dident over heat
I usually heat up the CPU before removing (ie stress it a bit then power off) makes it easier. Sometimes paste can harden it shouldn't but it can
Thanks for this video. To the point!
I try to get on with it! Nothing worse than a padded out video!

Thank you Sir.
I have one question, is the bottom of the fan supposed to be touching the processor? The sticky heat-shrink is all over the top of my processor. Is that the way it should be or did I do something wrong? Thanks for the straight to the point video!
The thermal paste has to be there to transfer heat from the CPU to the aluminium heatsink, you honestly just put it over it, screw it up and that's it (attach fan header to CPU header on board). The fan is screwed to the heatsink there is no need to do anything to it
the springs man, the springs
They work fine, hold the backplate in place and screw the cooler down
My screws won’t go in no matter how much pressure I apply, any help?
Turn anti clockwise first then you should feel them drop into the thread
Mr Baz Reviews Wow! Thanks so much for your reply even on a year and a half old video! I found out that my problem was that the backplate had fallen down from when I unscrewed the fan earlier to change CPU’s. Thanks for the informative video, however,
This video just saved my life got stuck at this exact point 😂 but question, the clips you removed from the board does that fan not screw into those? Or just straight into the mobo?
No cooler screws directly into back plate the clips are of no use with the stock cooler
Mr Baz Reviews yeh thats what i did, i just followed your vid step by step which was a god send brilliant video and the only reason i got it done because the instructions were diabolical so thank you 👍🏻
Is there like a sticker or something on the thermal paste that you need to remove before installing or just put it down on cpu and that's it?
Paste is already on the stock cooler so just screw it in
@@MrBazReviews okay thx i already did but then i was reading something on reddit and got scared i fucked it up
