- How To Install AMD AM4 Ryzen CPU For Beginners!
Building your first computer can be scary, but with some research and some guidance you can do it easily!
In this guide I will be walking you through how install a AMD AM4 based processor, The Ryzen 5 1400 into the ASRock B450m-HDV r4.0 motherboard which supports the AM4 Ryzen and Athlon processors.

First we will be checking the processor and looking for any bent or mis-aligned pins, then preparing the motherboard for the stock AMD cooler the Wraith Stealth model.
We need to release the CPU clamping arm from the clip and raise the arm fully to allow the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket to open.
Next we will align the arrow or triangle on the corner of the processor and motherboard. Gentle lower the cpu onto the socket and it should fall into the socket and sit flush or level with the socket.
If it doesn't gently remove it and carefully check for bent or damaged pins on the CPU.
Sometimes a very slight wiggle can help the CPU fall into the socket, but really shouldn't be necessary on a BNIB CPU. Second hand or used CPU's may have slightly mis-aligned pins.
Now that the CPU is installed we can now lower the socket tension arm and push it past the retaining clip. You may feel or hear a click as it locks into place.
Next we can apply our cooling solution. This will consist of the stock AMD cooler or cooler of your choice and possibly some thermal interface material or compound (T.I.M.)
The choice of cooler and compound is a very polarising subject, but essentially as long as you apply the chosen compound correctly and fix the cooler as the manufacturer recommends you can't go far wrong.
So now we will apply a small amount of TIM, In our build we will be using Arctic MX4 as it is both great value and gives great results thermally and is not electrically conductive so is safer to use than some other more conductive materials or compounds.
The amount used should be enough to cover the majority of the CPU so as to make the largest surface area contact with the CPU cooler. Any gaps or uneven areas will reduce the coolers ability to do it's job!
With the paste applied, we can now install the cooler. Our cooler is the AMD Wraith Stealth model but you can use any cooler you wish as long as it has at least the same TDP or higher than the CPU you are installing. The Higher the TDP of the Cooler the better is can be at cooling (subject to case design , airflow etc)
To install the Wraith cooler, first align the four mounti screws with the motherboards CPU back plate and use a little pressure to get the screw started and screw a few turns on each screw in a criss cross method to allow even distribution of mounting force or pressure.
Next plug in the fan 4 pin connector to the CPU fan header on the motherboard, and that is your CPU and CPU cooler installed.

Putting a cpu on a motherboard is literally more stressful than my finals exam
lol yeah and i do it far too often
Mines too cpu is too big on my mobo, is there anyway to fix this?
@@qualitycontent296 post some pics on the discord chat and i'll take a look
@@mikesunboxing thank you very much, but I have resolved this problem. Thank you very much for trying to help me out. You seem like a very caring person! Since this was my new pc build I was very new to everything about making a pc. It turns out my mobo and my cpu have been a different socket type. I just ordered a new one. Hopefully this resolves my problem.
agreed
I'm guessing very few tech youtubers have ever seen how small a grain of rice actually is.
lol yeah
here a grain of rice is actually pretty big and about 5-7mm long
They only eat basmati
They said as small as grain of rice but they put like a big ass peanut size into it lmao
I thought you spread it on like mayonnaise like they do at PC world. So it shouldn't oooze out of the sides like and overloaded squashed subway sandwich? You learn something new every day.
In 20 years of fixing, building, in professional life and helping others on such in personal life I have more fingers and toes than I can recall instances where inches of sludge had not been applied, even on expensive servers bought ready from the producer, you'd be amazed.
Couple tips I would add. (1.) If changing out an old CPU, run a couple of heavy stress tests/workloads like Cinebench, etc before pulling the cooler off. Warming up the CPU can make a big difference because sometimes that old paste sticks and makes removing the cooler difficult and dangerous. (2.) Twist when pulling the cooler off, don't' pull straight up (3.) When installing a new cooler or AIO, make sure to check if the block has any pre-applied paste first. You don't want to add paste if the cooler already has some pre-applied, which many do.
Why twist? Good tips!👍
@@jelly8594 because the heatsink can sometimes stick to the CPU and plenty of people have ripped the CPU out of the socket by pulling straight up too hard. Giving a slight twist helps break the seal between heatsink and CPU.
@@user-kf9vz8fz9l thanks!👍

Replaced my CPU yesterday following your instructions - thank you so much for the detailed guides, they're proving incredibly useful.
Great to hear!
What a great and easy tutorial! So excited to finally put the last of my components in my brand new build.
Glad it helped!
This is one of the best tutorials I have ever watched. Thanks so much!
Wow, thank you!
Hey it’s Sam here, Adam’s friend, we were struggling to get the cpu in. We had it wrong the first time but then we were trying to get it the right. Confused, we went on RUclips to look if we were doing something wrong. We stumbled upon your video and the last method you said was the “Wiggle Method”. We gave it try and VOILA, the wiggle method worked. Thank You
Glad you got it sorted :-)
The thing that makes me nervous is the CPU like the Pins.
just be careful and you will be fine
About 4-5 years ago, I tried installing a cpu for the first time, but ended up breaking a few pins. At that point I gave up, but going to be trying to build my first PC this upcoming week 🙏 hopefully I dont mess it up again.
if you need help join us on the discord and we can all help you through it
If you let the cpu fall in its place and pull the lever down, nothing can go wrong right? How did you break it? I am going to build my first pc in a few months.
@@beschuitelia1987 It was a bit harder at the time, as you didn't have the plastic buffer thingy, you had to place the CPU pins in their respective socket directly.
If you were gentle and careful all should go well, but sometime you could misalign it and not notice until you pulled the lever down and bend everything that wasn't correctly set.
You can look at the LGA 1155/1156 socket installation, wich was the standard at the time (for Intel CPUs), to get an idea of the differences and screw-up possibilities.
What happened bro
It's impossible to mess up, you just sit it carefully and it connects. Some people think it's like cartridges and they need to force it on the socket. It'll amost always break pins.
Lol im stuck in quarantine in a hotel but i ordered a pc to my house, just learning all this stuff so i go home and build my monster pc
Have fun buddy
This is so much better than the stock MSI install AMD CPU video. Those guys could learn something from you. Thank you!
that is so kind of you to say, thanks
Building PC's make me sweat. Just installed my 3600x and couldn't get screws to reach. after you said "Persevere untill you get a thread started" I went to work and had it done in 30 seconds 🤣.
glad to help hope the rest of the build goes smoothly
Am installing mine right now but they don’t reach and nothing helps

Amazing how many CPU videos show the install with a long shot, including the one from AMD, Thanks.
moeshickenyay Thanks for the feedback! Please consider sharing the video and information on your social media, it really helps to get the message out there.
I found it easier if I pushed the fan down while tightening.
Otherwise I got two in and then one either popped out or just turned forever.
Wasn't as easy as installing my m9i.
Good idea
How did You do This Ive been Screwing forever
Stoner Shag I’m having trouble screwing them in and yes it is clicking a lot
What I do is I locate the triangles BEFORE hand so I know exactly where to place it, open the arm open the package and processor and drop
Good idea - thanks for watching :-)
I would suggest mounting the cooler with the AMD logo/bulge facing away from the ram slots and towards the rear fan. Many smaller motherboards won't even have room for 2 sticks of ram with the fan bulge, but if your mo/bo has 4 ram slots, and you want to update to 4 sticks of ram in the future, they probably won't fit with the way Mike has the fan orientated
good point
I found this out the hard way a few weeks ago. The AMD "bump" gets in the way of the memory slot.
I literally just install mines and just noticed but I don’t see myself using the 3rd slot anytime soon
If someone cant screw their stock fan on. try moving your pc if its on its side to up right and hold the backplate as you screw, may take 2 sets of hands but worked for me
good advice
Great how-to, Mike! I liked how you handled how to install the thermal paste. Tends to wind people up, for whatever reason.
Yes it does for some reason I was going to recommend a particular method but thought it safer not too
I know this is old but I just ordered all my PC parts about an hour ago for my first ever PC build and am kind of freaking out a little bit. A major freak out I was having was actually installing the CPU but you just put me at ease. Thank you for an excellent tutorial.

@@mikesunboxing I also really appreciate this tutorial, I wasn't aware on how to install the cooler because I've only used Intel CPUs in my custom builds, but I found a good deal on a 2600 for $71 with the stock cooler.
@@OneDumbOrangeCat Hope it goes well 🙂
@@mikesunboxing It went very well, my PC has been working since around Monday last week.
@@OneDumbOrangeCat Nice one!
Great explanation. That's how should be a video for beginners! Thank you!
Glad you think so!
Really good video Mike, including nice tips on what to watch out for, like making sure your fan cable reaches comfortably before committing to which way round you install. Many thanks! Just need my cpu to arrive now...
hope you have a good build
Thank you for this tutorial. I really don't like AMD's CPU with all the pins and zero insertion force method as compared to Intel CPU's. I am a noob at PC building. But I am switching to AMD CPU's for my PC builds as AMD offers better value (cost to performance) as compared to Intel. I like this video because it does a close up or macro of the insertion of the AMD CPU so I can simulate the CPU installation myself at home based on how your CPU insertion looks rested in the socket. I do like AMD's stock cooler heat sink installation better than Intel's stock heat sink cooler.
thanks for watching

Either way is good
One trick to use while spreading the cooling compound is to use a clean piece of plastic, like a credit card. to spread the compound evenly across the top of the heat spreader.
That's a great idea!

GAASP Thanks for the feedback! Please consider sharing the video and information on your social media, it really helps to get the message out there.
Thanks for this. This is my first time installing an AMD processor chip. I've been used to installing intel chips. Those are ridiculously simple (in your face) to figure out their orientation - because they come with 2 big notches cut in on each side (that are off-center). Why did AMD have to make this more subtle and almost cryptic process?
Glad I could help! Upcoming video of 'how to install an Intel' that we filmed yesterday 😂
Imo I abhor intel's design and wish they made them different.
If you accidentally bend one pin by simply brushing up against the socket, the whole board is fucked and you need to scrap it. With amd at least you can still replace the processor if you screw up. Yeah you still need to replace the expensive processor if it happens but it sure beats having to replace an entire mobo
This is one of the best tutorials I have ever watched. Thanks .
You're very welcome! Glad it was helpful :-)
I already knew this but I was so worried for my first build (3400g, 3200mhz corsair vengance, msi a-pro max, stock cooler ect)about bending the pins. I am not an adult yet so do not have a job, meaning that if I slipped up I would not be building a pc any time soon. Thankyou, this helped..
glad to help
Thank you so much for this, I was really concerned when putting the heat sink on because the last time I used even half the pressure that was needed for that damn think I busted the processor but all went well and now it’s in
well done, glad it all worked out
Thumb up. Thank you for making the video!

Please mention that some AMD CPUs such as the 5600G have thermal compound pre-applied so you do not need it.

Easy peazy. Last time I changed a CPU was on a 586 pc. Yeah, I'm old. I had to transfer a Ryzen 5 from a dead board to a new board and I'd never touched an M4 before. Nothing to it.. now If I can just find my thermal paste.. LOL Thanks.

Awesome, thank you!
You did a better job than AMD's official lmao. Never installed a Ryzen or seen one. Helping a friend out from a distance
Any cooler that requires "finding the screw holes" is a lot easier to fit outside the case than in it.
For another beginners tip, how about one on setting the standoffs, along with the particular "beware" of converting from Micro ATX to standard (excellent opportunity to destroy a motherboard if you forget to....).
My two biggest fears, wrong standoffs and bent pins on LGA-whatever
Bent pins are very scary

Hi Mike, nice video. If I had a dollar for every CPU I’ve mounted in the last 12 years I could buy a R7 3700X. I think thermal paste is too messy, so I stopped using it a few years ago. Now I use graphite thermal pads instead. They work just as good as paste, but they’re reusable with no mess. It seems odd that the stock cooler uses the four screw mounting method, but most pump heads for AIO’s use the standard mount with wire retention clips. Oh, my current Cinebench R15 CPU score is 1675 and the OpenGL score = 175.2 fps. Not bad for a R5 3600.
Thermal pads are on my list but waiting for them to appear on Amazon
Oletta... could you point me (us?) in the direction of the pads you are using? I am very interested.

Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for the video it will prove to be useful. I've recently been given an AMD Ryzen CPU and motherboard but one of the tangs was broken on one of the CPU brackets (the plastic bits you removed). Luckily they sell them separately and I've got a genuine set of brackets for £4. I can't wait for them to arrive along with some Arctic thermal paste like you used (I remembered to go for that one from building old Pentium and Core 2 Duo systems years ago). Not that great on building PCs but I normally get by. The irony is if it all works okay I plan on replacing the CPU cooler with another which doesn't even need the brackets but I don't want to spend £50 on a cooler when I'm not 100% sure the motherboard and CPU are actually working (they were taken out of a PC which had some problems and I am hoping it was caused by the CPU cooler literally hanging off on one side due to the broken bracket). Wish me luck and hopefully I'll have a nice upgrade and I can ditch my old i5 3570 which is getting kind of old now. I hope it works okay with my GPU even though it's kinda old too (GTX 970). Thanks dude.
thanks Daniel and hope it all goes smoothly for you
Thanks for doing this so slowly and clearly. I just got a 2nd hand mobo in a case and tried to put a 1600 in but I had problems as the backplate was coming loose as wasn't rested on a firm base. So I need to try again putting pressure on the backplate...
The cpi was sticking to the looser cooler and when I removed the cooler the cpu came up with it! I hope I haven't damaged anything!
been there myself many times! also makes me cringe
Is it easy to bend pins while installing? And also will the cpu pop out of the plastic clam shell when I open it? That's what I'm most worried about
it isn't that bad just take your time
Very clearly Explained
Thank you so much 🙂
Thank You! That was very helpful.

Good video! Very helpful!

Tip: If you are using the stock cooler with pre-applied thermal paste/pad be sure to remove the pre-applied paste and use a quality thermal paste. When removing my Ryzen 5 3600 stock fan to replace it with a new tower fan, because of heating issues, the CPU was completely glued to the stock fan and was pulled out of it's socket still attached to the fan. After 10 minutes of panic and a trip to RUclips I had to blow-dry CPU for 5 minutes in order to gently pry it off of the stock fan. This was a 2020 build so only 2 years of runtime but thermal paste had dried and hardened explaining the heat issues. Hope this helps!
thanks robert, definitely good advice

Well I got it done and you were right! Fairly easy for my first time. Temps are a little warmer than Id like. I was getting 70c max before now Im getting up to 80 while playing games like Cyberpunk. But I may not have applied enough thermal paste, or maybe it didnt spread evenly when I placed the cooler back on. Idk, I might reapply it later if I feel the need to. I built a pc with the exact same CPU and motherboard earlier this year. Very happy with it although I found that the fan housing on the CPU cooler slightly restricted access to the RAM slot closest to it (the RAM modules had heat spreaders on them).
