I have 40 years of professional detailing experience . I wouldn't recommend any of these methods when dealing with gloss black painted wheels. The finish on them can be extremely delicate and can scratch easily. I would recommend for this type of wheels, using a more ph neutral gel type spray cleaner with some iron removing properties. This type of cleaner tends to encapsulate dirt while removing iron deposits and adding lubricity to help prevent scratching delecate black gloss finishes. Make sure to use a good quality microfiber towel and a good lubricating ph neutral shampoo. Remember, keep your towel very wet and soapy. Rinse very well and pat dry with a clean microfiber towel or blow dry.
Black gloss painted I just use the car wash meguiar's gold class typically as it's typically on sale locally or on the AZ with more of it than I use on the rest of the vehicle. Rinse and foam cannon 1st.
Well they didn't have the knowledge nor the product you're talking about 40 years ago. A carwash soap and microfiber towel is the best way to go. Scratching only happens when you use brushes and harsh chemicals. I've been a professional detailer for 27 years and have never had an issue with scratching ect. I get what you're saying but you just missed some facts.
Great video! Yes, Acid works very well, but it can be troublesome. With some wheels more, with others - less. What people are forgetting is - wheel cleaners ability not only to remove the dirty but safely remote (incapsulating the dirt, providing some lubrication). With some wheel cleaners, you can feel how slick the surface is becoming when you apply it and leave it to dwell. While with other ones, such an effect is nowhere to be found. Very much the same is the case with vinegar. Yes, it is applied to free up the dirt and allows it to be removed (I must say, this again depends on the type of dirt we are dealing with + the period, of how long the dirt was there). But there is no additional lubrication or, I dear to say, incapsulation of the dirt.
This is especially true when dealing with black painted wheels. You must have good lubrication or risk scratching the finish as black wheels can be some of the most delicate that a detailer will be dealing with. 😉
@ Could not agree. Especially those new, glossy wheels or with glossy parts. You need to be extra careful with them. Regarding both, tools and chemicals.
I use a mix of distilled white vinegar and water in a spray bottle to clean my F150 between washes. When I worked for a cement company, we used vinegar/water mixture to remove cement dust from our semi's.
The Meguir's wheel acid was always my favourite but I ran out well over a year ago, I have been using a wheel acid that I got at Napa that is almost as good. I really did not expect the vinegar and Dawn to work as well as they did. I did the wheels of a 1981 Pontiac Grand Prix last year that I don't think the inner barrels had ever been cleaned, the wheels hadn't been on the car for over 20 years and were put into storage with the barrels dirty. Even with wheel acid it took forever to scrub them clean. Great video again Frank.
Hey Sas, you're spot on, I have got another set i didnt film because black wheels but even acid took severals around, pulled out the drill brush too. Cheers man thanks for tuning in as usual and taking a minute to give feedback!
I CAN tell you fella, that AKEBONO ceramic brake pads are the best for breaking and super easy cleaning. I used vinegar and dawn mixed together. Worked super and did not have to pay for the cleaner as I had the ingredients under the sink at home. That worked for me Sir. vf
Right on, thanks for the idea of "vinegar = dawn" ... I'm going to try Ajax (orange degreaser .. b/c I just bought a 64 oz for washing dishes ...lol) dish soap + white vinegar ... I expect similar results.
Meguiar's ultimate all wheel cleaner is very good. Spray it on. Wait for it to turn purple. Then spray off. I recommend not spraying on as heavy as they suggest. And use a medium bristle brush to agitate.
I use dish soap. But after i thoroughly clean my wheels, i clay bar them then wax it. So i use a toilet sponge to clean them then spray wax. The brake dust comes off easy.
I've been using Turtle Wax All Wheel & Tire Cleaner in the lime green bottle for about $8.00. It seems to be safe on polished and black powder coated aluminum wheels, plus it leaves the tires a satin black.
Just some info, If you don't pre rinse the wheels all the products would work noticeably better because the water changes the delution ratio & breaks down the strength of the products to a certain point that's why most of the time the wheels get sprayed dry before the wash process to break things down as strong as possible. By the way Adam's is an awesome wheel & tire cleaner 😜
Hey Mayo you're right and fair point. My thought process is Dawn is alkaline and vinegar acid, they probably compete against each other in terms of chemistry in that sense but yes vinegar by it self needs a little lubricity so a tiny touch of dawn can help as long as vinegar is much more abundant. cheers
Great comparison and if may suggest is not to leave the parts under high or low ph to mitigate rust, xidation and premature clearcoat failure. I'd would mix dawn+ vinegar 1:10 as pre soak then wipe of after 5 min then make a paste baking soda mix with water and use it for mechanical method aka agitate, then rinse it down. repeat this steps about 2-3 times dependes on how baked the dirt and brake dust are in. For stubborn tar , rust and dirt use WD-40 for spot removal. this will yield a PH balance state instead of using Acid or High ph alone. This 90% of detailers missed having a PH level is everything in detailing imho
You're theory is fine and all but on hard sufarces such as clear coated aluminum not so much IMO. Temporary Change: The pH change is usually temporary and limited to the duration of contact. Once rinsed, the surface typically reverts to its natural pH balance.
Not surprised. Acid wheel cleaners work. The rest are just gimmicks. I use Nanoskin wheel and tire based on price and results. My coatings are still holding up and I can maintenance wash quickly without spending lots of time on wheels and tries like I used to.
@@kirkwilson5900 I don’t really measure but more of eyeball my mix. I believe I’m probably somewhere around 3:1 or 4:1 at any given time. Hello, new the the channel. First off I want to say great comparison Boss! I recently started using dawn power wash (just for wheels). I wash my vehicle once a week and it works great! Interesting how you brought vinegar into the mix. I recently started using it to clean windows and it has produced fantastic results. Didn't really think of using it on wheels, going to have to try that. Again great video Boss!
Amazing how well Dawn and Vinegar work on their own. I think the solution to elevate them both is to use them together. Maybe start with vinegar soak then hit it with a Dawn soak for lubrication and then wiping will be safe for painted wheels. I still have most of my gallon of Wheel Brightener for the absolutely hammered wheels that have never been detailed but mostly use the Adams for most other less hammered wheel jobs. Great video Frank, thanks!
Hey Rob, i needed to know it vinegar works by it self, you're right tiny bit of dawn will help the lubricity factor. Now we have answers for future tests. Cheers my friend
Good video, not surprised by the results. Adam's and all the other alkaline wheel cleaners need agitation in my experience. The only one that didn't for me is Infinity Wax Incinerate, but I am afraid of it at high concentrations. It actually dissolved my Tolco spray heads into brown goop. I am thinking of trying P&S Crystal Wash as well since it's oxalic acid which is much safer for you than the HF acid in most wheel cleaners.
Hey Chris glad you enjoyed the video. With Acid I have to flush the sprayer with plain water after each use to extend it's life even with the TOLCO gold acid resistant, otherwise they fail quickly, that's annoying but yeah. Talk soon man
If you use McGuire wheel cleaner it turns clear and then later it turns purple this is by far the best wheel cleaning chemical that I have ever used you got to make sure you have a brush on hand cuz once you scrub everything everything is being removed especially that harsh break dust
Awesome video Frank! Meguairs is my ALL TIME FAVORITE!!! I was so heartbroken when I contacted them and they said it was discontinued. I wish I knew in advance as I would have bought it by the case. There is NOTHING on the market that works just as good or efficiently. I even use the stuff for my tub/sink/fixtures when it gets crusted up with mineral buildup. It strips it off like butter (use at a very dilute ratio). I had hopes that you had some supplier that I could get it from but I suspect, like me, this is your last gallon of it. I have found that Superior Products F30 comes close but not the same.
You need to try Sonax Beast. Its pricier than Adams, but EASILY outclasses it. Its the best wheel cleaning product ive ever used. Also cuts through the heavy dust from Brembos.
The dawn I like to use is the power foam spray bottle. It shoots out clingy thick foam, I use that on all my cars. Does great on brake calipers and it dissolves that brown residue that is always on tires. Try it. A bottle does about 3 cars for me, so 12 wheels for about $5 a bottle. Not bad . I like the lemon flavor myself :)
Once again Frank another in depth dive! Gotta love getting a shower when cleaning wheels off of the car. Surprised at how the kitchen options work as long as you have agitation. I always have some meguiars around for the nasty wheels. Wonder if the meguiars or Adam’s would perform better going through and foam hand pump sprayer? You’re definitely bringing great value and entertainment both in your videos. Always look forward to your videos. I’ll still stick with detailing products.
@Detailing_Dogma i 2nd that one, it really kick butt. Get the concentrate tho so you can adjust strength to your needs. The ready to use is set at 4:1 dilution of concentrate i believe
Wonder what you could make to where when you have to clean rims the front and back if you could make something where you could stick maybe two at a time you could put them on something where you can spend them clean them and take those two off and put the other two on I bet there’s something out there that would make it easier to do that then all the water don’t blow in your face when you’re spraying that water pretty much at the floor and I know it goes everywhere
Thank you for the video. Could you please share what do you use for video ... I noticed how the camera follows you. For recording? are you using your phone? which software do you use for editing? Thx
i drive a track car and the wheels get really dirty, like crazy dirty with massive amounts of brake dust that is really HOT and lots of tire rubber that is semi molten. I've been using a wheel cleaner or general car shampoo and not really satisfied. The wheels were prepped beforehand with a ceramic coating like chemical guys - hydroslick, which seems to help. the main difference is that the brake dust is literally redhot when it comes off the brake and melts or burns its way into the wheel. most of the rubber is knocked off with a plastic spatula, and rubber marks come off easiest with mothers r3 racing rubber remover (which is also used on body paint for rubber marks). you can probably drive a street car for 10 years and they wont be as dirty as two days at the race track. I could really use a good solution to easier wheel cleaning. the wheels are typically factory powder coated with or without clear coat, aluminum or magnesium wheels. Can you find a guy that tracks and test some cleaning methods out on his wheels? Thanks
Hey sir, for abused wheels we have to use the same principles. For Tar you'll need this amzn.to/3ZGWui2 and for heavy brake dust I recommend amzn.to/3Dn7t8O
Soap is king. At least in my experiences. There is no such thing as “touchless” cleaners. If there is no agitation, it’s not going to be clean. So if you’re going to have to agitate any way, use soap. It’s cheap and gets the job done. No need for other harsh chemicals unless something drastic has occurred. I’ve been saying this for decades now … soap will handle pretty much everything you need it to on the exterior. Soap, okay but which one? lol … pick one. 😊😊😊
I started out using dish soap … it got the job done. But to make it safe, I had to dilute it quite a bit. As the dilution increases, the lubricity decreases. So now I just use rinseless or neutral car shampoo. I have NEVER needed iron removers, drying aids, detail sprays, glass cleaners, acid/alkaline degreasers, etc. 😊😊😊
it would have really helped if you told us what kind of wheels they are, coated, not coated, you don't want an etching cleaner for coated wheels but you do want a cleaner like dawn for coated wheels. cleaning the back of the wheels is cool but it's the front of the wheels that count........
@@Detailing_Dogma just try it - the oxygen in the water H20 will remove rust - and the aluminum ions in the foil will fill the pit marks I cleaned Bentley Continental GT chrome rims that hadn't been clean in over 40,000 miles With this method they came out like new - both sides Non-chrome aluminum inside too
just saying get some at dollar tree or discount store "Awesome " in a yellow bottle cost 1.29 cent for quart of product spray on wheels let it sit for a few then with micro fiber cloth wipe then rinse off does a great job for little to $$
I had a problem once where I couldn’t remove stubborn brake dust stains on some rims I bought. I used a P&S brake dust cleaner and it didn’t remove all the brake dust, that’s because it penetrated the paint and is now harder to remove. Then I had a crazy idea where I used “Loctites naval jelly rust remover.” I didn’t let it sit on the rims a while I just put on some disposable gloves and started smearing this stuff on the stubborn brake dust and I then rubbed it against the surface several times. Until I noticed it stripped the brake dust off like in seconds. It didn’t damage the rims as I quickly rinsed off the Phosphoric acid with water. And they looked much better. Since I needed to prep the rims for painting them.
The best is see this at 1,75x and jump ... 23 min is too long. By the way, why you spraid 2 wheels dry and the other 2 wet, it seems not fair to comparing.
Felt compelled to keep intermittently turning the volume to *_mute_* whenever the _'axe-murderer-about-to-kill-someone'_ *unnecessary and intrusive 'music'* came on😶. Otherwise, well done and informative...and oh boy, would I ever love to own your nice garage with that floor drain.
Nonsense. I use a dedicated bucket and foam sponge to clean my rims with the same car wash soap I use on the car. They come out great. I learned my lesson about wheel cleaners when my center caps would become ruined. Once or twice a year ill remove the wheels specifically to wash them and again I simply use car wash soap and warm water.
Nope, it can't strip clear-coat. Any dish soap will remove the wax from a cars clear-coat paint leaving it exposed to contaminants...as long as you apply a fresh wax or ceramic coat after washing it's perfectly safe.
Test vinegar and acid again, giving vinegar a 3, 6 and 12 min soak time plus a 3, 6 and 12 hour repeated soak time to check for damage to surfaces with longer soak. Very possible vinegar could equal the acid with a second application or longer soak Also try a quick rinse with Dawn before vinegar or in between two vinegar applications. For a diy on a single vehicle a few extra mins to use non toxic products is well worth it

Thank you Steve, appreciate your contribution and feedback.
You gotta try Dura-Coating Wheely clean, it eats all sort of contamination from wheels
Hey 1st, i looked it up and doesnt seem to be widely available here in Canada. You're the first one mentioning that brand.
@Detailing_Dogma i 2nd that one, it really kick butt. Get the concentrate tho so you can adjust strength to your needs. The ready to use is set at 4:1 dilution of concentrate i believe
I like BBQ grill cleaner, diluted with water as one scrubbs.
those take my breath away!
What about Dawn Power Wash? I would loved to have seen that.
thank you for the suggestion, added it to the notebook. Cheers
In my opinion it was not a fair test, you did not do equal spray but I still love the results, don’t want to use acid but Adam’s seem to work well.
it was proven later in the video regardless.✌️✌️
Wonder how it would be if you sprayed the wheel first with vinegar and the sprayed and cleaned with the dawn
Hey Brian good idea but Dawn by it self worked good!
Do we know the effect of households in mid term and long term? Are they safe?
Not so much but on wheels I wouldnt worry too much. On plastic and paint I'd dilute dawn at least 1:500. cheers
Thank you for the video. Could you please share what do you use for video ... I noticed how the camera follows you. For recording? are you using your phone? which software do you use for editing? Thx
Hey Johnathan, handle help cam with gimbla here : amzn.to/3ORX9YQ
Main camera amzn.to/3ZRGxa6
Software I use Capcut pro paid version.
Thank you sir
The old method rag soaked in gasoline. Works fine and cheap
i drive a track car and the wheels get really dirty, like crazy dirty with massive amounts of brake dust that is really HOT and lots of tire rubber that is semi molten.
😊😊😊
Same here. Dish soap all the way. No need for all those expensive wheel cleaners.
😊😊😊
Exactly.
I learned long ago to treat your wheels like your paint.
Nothing but soap and a soft brush when needed. Then wax them with a good product.
it would have really helped if you told us what kind of wheels they are, coated, not coated, you don't want an etching cleaner for coated wheels but you do want a cleaner like dawn for coated wheels. cleaning the back of the wheels is cool but it's the front of the wheels that count........
Im glad you like the video wow! 99% of todays wheels are clear coated Sir!
You should try this show and vinegar together
You should try Dishsoap And vinegar together
You want me to make a bomb? ✌️
wheel brightener is ammonium biflouride, not hf acid, great video!
I'm no chemist but check the SDS carefully ''Reacts with metals/glass to form Hydrofluoric acid''
Sds also mentions dipose of megs wb same as HF.
@@Detailing_Dogma fair enough
FRANKly, i love more and more your videos, great result without using any brushes.
Thank you Loic, thanks for taking a minute to leave your feedback sir!
@Detailing_Dogma et en plus t'as un français qui s'est déchiré les cellules grises pour faire un jeu de mots en anglais 🤯🤣.
Just wash your wheels a little more often. Soap and water and a little elbow will usually do the job.
Good tip!
Mix dawn and vinegar with water that works really good
Adam's wheel and tire cleaner is not an acid.
Its a non-acid, alkaline formula.
I recommend you rewatch the video my whole statement about it being ph 13.5 with Screenshots overlay lol
Adams it the best for break dust
Thanks for your feedback!
Gotta be harsh on the finishes. What about that? Neutralizing & protection?
It's rinsed, clear coat protects them, it's not show car wheels.
Nice, Maybe mix vinegar with wd40?
Aluminum foil & water will remove brake dust on aluminum & chrome rims
Glad that works for you! ✌️
@@Detailing_Dogma just try it - the oxygen in the water H20 will remove rust - and the aluminum ions in the foil will fill the pit marks
I cleaned Bentley Continental GT chrome rims that hadn't been clean in over 40,000 miles
With this method they came out like new - both sides
Non-chrome aluminum inside too
FYI VINEGAR can damage aluminum if not rinsed completely off.
So you can drink vinegar safely but don’t leave it aluminium or it’s damaged?
You don’t rinse any acidic liquid or detergents on surfaces it will leave a burnt in watermark, like acid rain marks on paint surfaces.
Thanks for watching
@@kennethprocak5176yes because the ph of stomach acid is roughly the same ph as vinegar 😊.
just saying get some at dollar tree or discount store "Awesome " in a yellow bottle cost 1.29 cent for quart of product spray on wheels let it sit for a few then with micro fiber cloth wipe then rinse off
does a great job for little to $$
thank you for your feedback
Combine dawn and vinegar then you get a killer cleaner
So, you are saying. Anything work when you are in a pinch. Grab a dish soap and a bucket of water then start scrubbing.
That's a way to put it!
How old are these stains and wheels ?
1 year, thank you✌️
I had a problem once where I couldn’t remove stubborn brake dust stains on some rims I bought.
I used a P&S brake dust cleaner and it didn’t remove all the brake dust, that’s because it penetrated the paint and is now harder to remove.
Then I had a crazy idea where I used “Loctites naval jelly rust remover.”
I didn’t let it sit on the rims a while I just put on some disposable gloves and started smearing this stuff on the stubborn brake dust and I then rubbed it against the surface several times.
Until I noticed it stripped the brake dust off like in seconds. It didn’t damage the rims as I quickly rinsed off the Phosphoric acid with water. And they looked much better.
Since I needed to prep the rims for painting them.
Try BBQ grill cleaner, but start scrubbing and diluting with water so as not to affect rim paint. I use toothbrushes and polymer brushes.
Acid works better for wheels that were never cleaned. Brake buster is good but is built for maintenance imo. Thanks for tuning in!
Vinegar always makes me want to eat french fries with ketchup also!
Good one!
I’ve used purple power to clean the brake dust. Works well but causes the tape weights to fall off. Anyone else have this problem?
I doubt purple power can cause that, my guess is the wheel weight was not properly applied.
Mix dawn and vinager?
a tiny amout of dawn can help, too much and it'll swing the PH towards neutral and defeat the purpose of vinegar! Thanks for tuning in!
White vinegar will clean any metal or natural fabrics, stay away from thin rubbers and plastic that absorb it and dry out.
Thanks for the tips! ✌️
Purple Power and a pressure washer cuts brake dust better than brake cleaner!
this stuff is the bomb!
Vinegar and baking soda
Hey dawn is good enough for the baby ducks!!! Its good enough for us too
Right on Zac thanks for tuning in✌️
Ammonia cleans very well and it’s super cheap 😮
Yes good one ✌️✌️
Nooo don't pre rinse adams works so much better without the pre rinse it literally cuts it's performance in half
at least make it fair you ether scrub the wheels the same or don't scrub at all
Thanks for tuning in
Half a bottle of vinegar, five drops of Dawn filled with water.
great tip✌️
@ with your bottle might be 10 drops your bottle was pretty big.
For me, they're all no good, just use a rag and wipe down and you're done.
Excellent! ✌️✌️
The best is see this at 1,75x and jump ... 23 min is too long.
By the way, why you spraid 2 wheels dry and the other 2 wet, it seems not fair to comparing.
You should watch it at 1x haha you'd ask this question
Felt compelled to keep intermittently turning the volume to *_mute_* whenever the _'axe-murderer-about-to-kill-someone'_ *unnecessary and intrusive 'music'* came on😶.
Otherwise, well done and informative...and oh boy, would I ever love to own your nice garage with that floor drain.
Hahaha that's alright, i try my best to add some emotion in the video edit. Thanks for your feedback!
Good Feedback ✌️
dawn is good for paint and tires. 😏
Thank you for your feedback!
Get superior products wire wheel cleaner
Assez bon ton anglais belle videos.
Merci Mike, bonne journée. ✌️
The surfactant industry is massive. Its only us car guys who would willing pay 10 times more for a wetting agent. A bit like women's shoes 😆
maybe rinse the wheels off BEFORE you apply any chems or soap?.. Just saying.. pressure cleaned almost as much as the cleaners.
Jerry something tells me you didn't watch the vinegar and wheel cleaner test where I just did that.
On Real MAGNESIUM Rims, Beieve It or Not, Lemon Juce is Best.
GEnius! ✌️✌️
Why all this background music in a cleaning video???????
Did you mean something? ✌️
I’m impressed with how well dawn did. I’m still going to leave it in the kitchen though
Yeah it's killer Neil! thanks for watching my friend
i took it out of the kitchen many years ago and it saved me tons of money
@ definitely something to remember that could get you out of a pinch
Don't ever wash your car with Dawn dish soap, I'm talking about the painted surface, Dawn will strip the clear coat that protects the paint.
Nope, it can't strip clear-coat. Any dish soap will remove the wax from a cars clear-coat paint leaving it exposed to contaminants...as long as you apply a fresh wax or ceramic coat after washing it's perfectly safe.
humm you should look in my collection I have debunked this completely
Corporate has many brainwashed to purchase expensive cleaners 😂
Glad you enjoyed it! ✌️✌️
❤
I'm thinking of simulating a car wash with Chem-X stars and stripes using Down with vinegar 😂
For a diy on a single vehicle a few extra mins to use non toxic products is well worth it
haha ✌️✌️
First!!!!
Thanks dude ;)
