@@alexhennage there's probably more process to gasoline and diesel than getting pure hydrogen, though there's more supply of ready to use gasoline and diesel than hydrogen - I don't think there's that much demand on hydrogen than gasoline or diesel.
It’s expensive because the supply chain isn’t there yet. Hydrogen is produced at every petroleum refinery, but they would need pressure swing adsorption facilities to produce clean hydrogen fuel and remain sustainable. Hydrogen can be shipped and stored, similar to propane, so it can be placed in remote areas, as long as a truck can access it to refill the tanks.

Yes currently but if we switched to hydrogen all we have to do is retrofit gas stations for it where as you have to maoe charging stations that will put strain on power grid

Hydrogen is now $36 per KG in California. It costs about $200 to fill up a Toyota Mirai now and that only gets you about 300 miles.

They are hoping that the infrastructure will be there very soon. Refuel is faster than charging electric at the moment. It may be cheaper/faster to build hydrogen fuel center than trying to make electric vehicles more suitable for longer trips. Toyota is always trying new things and this is one of them

The Mirai from the previous couple years gets only 220-250ish miles per full tank and the hydrogen stations are down half the time I try to fill up. On top of that, if the station is up and running, there's usually a 5+ car wait which always takes about an hour unless you go at midnight or something. The car drives nice, the stations are very impractical for now.
And what did that cat cost if u don't mind telling cuz I truly think for what it cost and the size of the tank I think u got ripped off if it wasn't given to u

@@kadafi4lyf That was true maybe 10 years ago, but now you can pretty much hook up an EV wherever there’s electricity for standard charging and the Tesla chargers are a little more common, still not as much as they need to be though. Hydrogen production and storage require extremely specialized equipment though. At best we might see hydrogen stations similar to a regular gas station sometime in the future
@@Silentguy_ the benefit i see in hydrogen is that you can fill up and go. My understanding is, and correct me if im wrong, that it takes hours to recharge an electric car even with superfast chargers which can slow down road trips and long journeys.

@@paperhouse6282 I think the infrastructure to produce hydrogen using purely renewable-sourced electricity (or nuclear, if _those_ activists get recognised for the fear mongers they are) isn't too far off, at which point there begins to be real environmental benefit to H2 powered cars (and if we have so much spare capacity, who cares that the process is only 10% efficient?), though I don't think it's practical to carry on using regular H2 bottles when a liquid hydrogen carrier (like ammonia) will do the job just as well, but without the risk of undetected leaks. That's the direction aviation is going right now, so I don't see why the automotive industry wouldn't follow, it's just much less hassle than gas bottles and lithium cells (which don't need oxygen to light up!), though I have to admit, battery electrics have a certain allure to them when done right too.

Hydrogen cars actually make water as they run. And it’s drinkable water, so you could literally set up a water storage system to drink some efficiently made water while driving. The cars are cool, the refill stations are dog crap.

Run two tanks and where the fuel pump is on an older vehicle under the seat you just run a stainless steel electrode and run it over to the other tank and then compressed that tank with like an air ride compressor and then you flow meter flow that to a pressure switch that shuts off the electrolysis process and all you have to do is pour water in the gas tank and hh+ 4.00 onboard production

They just offset the free fuel cost by raising the price of the car. I'd love it if hydrogen takes off but stupid games aren't the way to do it.
I mean, they might only raise the price by like 8000 but give you 15000. They know that a majority wont be able to use up the full 15000, so having that “free $15,000” will draw in customers. The same thing works with gift cards. A large amount of gift cards end up unused, so if you sell a $100 gift card but the recipient only spends $75, you basically get a free $25. And even if they spend the full 100, you still garuntee that theyre spending at your store.

My BMW I3 costs around 3.5¢ per mile or one-seventh as much as Mirai. I also have the convenience of "refueling" at home.
My car has a 3-400 mile range and costs $35 to fill up. Maybe when costs go down it will be more feasible.
I agree with ya, my car has a 18.5 gallon tank and usually gets 407 around town and 592 on the highway for roughly $55 but requires premium. Cost would obviously go down if using the low grade fuel.
The fuel in america is trash wich explains why it's so cheap. Plus, we know where america gets its oil from...

We are talking theoretical, physics limit, not manufacturing or adoption.

Battery cars had problems with battery chemistry, for mass adoption... Hydrogen has problems with physical properties of the universe.
And batteries are very recyclable in right conditions.
Any hope of hydrogen lies in making if from gas, which is also main reason Shell is supporting the efforts.

Batteries have a hard, physical limit. We havent been able, and wont be able, to overcome it without signficant improvements to battery technology.

The problem isn't with the car, it's the lack of infrastructure for hydrogen stations. They give you gas money as an incentive. They're amazingly efficient cars.
@@Nitsua__ it depends on what you compare it to, its basically an electric car with a fuelcell that runs on hydrogen, the storing and transport/on site production of the gas takes a fair bit of electricity.. less efficient than an electric car on the whole. More convenient to fill up and smaller batteries is the only upside. The firehazard is present in both cases, who knows maybe they will exist like gasoline and diesel does now, each in a different area of use.
Tesla did that and now Elon is the richest man on the planet.

@@AndrewDeLong what are you talking about. Hydrogen is an odorless gas that burns with an invisible flame and can burn at a much leaner ratio with air. Hydrogen cars still combust fuel, they just do so more like a fuel injection system. The only difference is that the Hydrogen is a gas during that process instead of a liquid to be aerosolized. Once again, there's a reason nobody with a background in chemistry would operate a hydrogen car.
There should be a way where u can use electrolysis in water so u can produce both hydrogen and oxygen to make back water as your waste gases. Imagine if that was possible. But that wouldn’t make sense cause it would be to inefficient

You don't need pure oxygen to produce hydrogen. Only water. And this Mirai need 700 bars compressors to refuel its tank. Good luck having that at home.

yes there is a way, but the problem is is that it would take just as much energy to perform electrolysis, through the law of conservation of energy, that would be produced from the electrolysis, and eventually this closed loop will not have sufficient energy to continue without adding external energy into the system

My 2017 Nissan runs on gas, and it gets 500-600 on a full tank, for 40-50 to fill up. If it wasn’t for the 15k fuel credit, this car is massively overpriced on fuel

As fuel consumption and demand reduces, hydrogen plants can add pressure swing adsorption facilities to produce clean hydrogen fuel and remain sustainable. Hydrogen can be shipped and stored, takes very little time to fill and may be a bridge to gap “range anxiety”. A current issue with electric cars is that they are charged at night, when grids are powered by fossil fuels. If we can encourage people to charge during the day, it would help consume the electricity glut provided by solar, offsetting the “duck curve”.
The reason hydrogen is expensive right now is because there’s no demand for it and there’s little supply. The engines are as efficient as gasoline engines which is impressive and within our life times hydrogen fuel will be cheaper than gas and eventually even hydrogen cars will be as cheap as gasoline powered cars.

@@FizzyCape Its not. It takes only a small amount of research to understand why. Hydrogen isn't as much a way to generate power as it is a way to store power. The issue is that the energy conversion losses are much, much, much higher than batteries, even when you take into account the added weight. This is not something that we can improve either. It's just the physics of how it works.
The only application hydrogen makes sense is for heavy duty vehicles like ships, freight trains, and maybe airplanes, where is not feasible to carry that many batteries or build electric infrastructure.
For light duty vehicles it's a fool's errand, we already have the infrastructure for charging BEVs in every home and workplace.
The only reason hydrogen gets any attention is because fossil fuel companies want to produce it from methane, defeating the purpose of ZEV mandates.
They were just trying something new. At least they didn't go full retard with electric cars like everyone else. Toyota focused more on hybrids over BEVs and that seems like the right call.

If there was just the same enthusiasm as there was for electric, it could be feasible. More places to fill up and prices could be comparable to gas. Range wouldn't be a problem like it is with electric.
Toyota Mirai is very slow, has no interesting features, a boring design, so it makes sense that people are not interested in hydrogen vehicles.
Electric range is not an issue for the majority of people though. The 200+km drives are not done on a daily basis for most people.
@@arakwar maybe not in Europe. Where I live people often drive an hour just to get groceries. Power can go out for days or even weeks at a time for millions of people during storms. Sure, most people in cities would have no issue, but hydrogen is much more practical. There's a reason most warehouses use propane fork lifts rather than electric ones. It's just easier and quicker to change a tank than recharge a battery.
Sure, most people won't have an issue with electric range most of the time. However, busy people don't have time to waste charging. Most work places still don't have chargers, and you can't always get a full charge in a short time at home. Not to mention if you want to go a longer distance for vacation it may take you 30% or more longer to get there.
The other problem with Hydrogen is fill up.
For work I have to use a Mirai, I have to wait for the hydrogen fill up.
Not because they are still filling up but because the temperature on the nozzle from a fill up drops dramatically with the hydrogen being pumped in.
They VERY often freeze over which is an absolute nightmare.
It’s a pain in the ass. I think Solid State batteries and EV’s are clearly the future. Hydrogen is not it.
Except hydrogen requires drilling for natural gases which is why the oil industry wants to move to hydrogen so they can keep making money from drilling. Oh and the process of going from natural gas to hydrogen gas they strip the co2 and that goes into the atmosphere

We can make hydrogen on demand. We would have to run out of water first. At that point there are slightly more pressing issues than hydrogen.

@@zachcreighton954 Hydrogen cars are evs. What you're thinking of are BEVs(battery electric vehicles) where hydrogen cars are FCEVs(fuel cell electric vehicles). The biggest difference in the two is the energy storage method.

Interesting how there are not many comments on that topic. 400miles for 93$ is insanely expensive. At least in EU. Here, 1000km is usually around 70€ with a regular VW 2L diesel engine.

I have seen an article about a guy who invented an water powered engine. They gradually dishonored him, and made him crazy in eyes of society. Imagine how much power oilbarons have, they can make you dissappear in a matter of hours. But this was atleast a decade ago, maybe even two. Now they have to loosen a little bit, because everyone is talking about how they pollute our planet, about climatic change, but they have already made so much money, that maybe 20 generations of their ancestors will never have to work. Now it's the time of elecrobarons and hydrobarons.

Fill up time includes the time to drive to the filling station and wait in line and then defrost the hose connector so you can get it off the car. It's a bad idea.

The only problem with hydrogen cars is that they’re not very prevalent. They’re in the same position electric cars were in 5-10 years ago. Once more people buy them they will be an awesome bridge between gasoline cars and electric cars.

@@kaniblurous electric is more efficient to make anyway. Litrally have the Earths wind and the suns solar beams that can charge ev's. Meaning it is very easy to get ahold of. Meanwhile hydrogen needs nuclear sations to split water molecules. Soon EV's can run without even needing to stop to charge since they will be charging themselves while on the move or the range will simply as long that the trip would need only a single charge from the persons home. The batteries that our in the phones are the same that are used in EV's but are to bigger scales. Also EV's are much safer due to their low centre of gravity and are much spacious than other powered vehicles as they don't need a massive tank.

States, like CA, who are heavily invested in this "Green Technology", already suffer from shortages in their output capacity. You would not be able to handle an influx in electric vehicles without resorting back to carbon-based sources of electricity. There's simply no way around the fact that the technology doesn't exist for the fantasy you're envisioning.
@@mattle841 I am the chief operating engineer at a small power plant in Canada. Now I have no idea to what level you do or don't understand electricity generation, but wind and solar are unreliable, and make very little electricity in most cases.
The best non-carbon electricity generation is nuclear and hydro dams, by far. Those wind turbines have a ridiculous design that puts absurd amounts of weight on one side of a huge bearing- with no counterweight on the other side. They break down constantly, and it is extremely tedious to fix them.
Solar panels are a lot better than wind, but still are subject to night time, cloudy days, dust, and snow. Their efficiency will degrade over time quicker than a steam or water turbine that's centralized and maintained.

Under-rated
It's only really expensive right now because the tech is still new and not as readily available and efficient yet. Give it 5 years and it'll greatly go down in price and become much easier to use and more readily available, ESPECIALLY as more cars adopt this tech as an alternative to EVs (which we'll probably see both on the road where hybrids replace gas with Hydrogen).
