my labs a month ago showed a total cholesterol of 326 and LDL of 216, and doc suggested a statin. I said no thanks and began WFPB diet immediately. One month later, new labs showed total cholesterol reduction to 202. The LDL reduced to 126. Not perfect, but well on the way I think! It works.
Thank you Dr. McDougall, you helped me understandthe truth about starches, its sad, when I first came here to RUclips, I would say I love my sandwiches, tacos, sopa de arroz(fried rice), etc. but many would say you're wrong Joe, carbs make you fat. And then you came here with the TRUTH, if you want to or you need to lose weight, eat more carbs.
Same for me, but farm-raised organic meat, chicken , pork, fish was always the MAIN dish on the table. And thick cut bacon with eggs was always on the breakfast table. Perogies was only for special holidays like Christmas...Then we all felt like crap for a few days after eating them... All that starch in the diet developed long ago, for when our ancestors were too poor to have farm animals to eat our" Proper Human diet" which is mostly carnivore, and all that cheap, easily grown starch was absolutely NEEDED for the heavy labour working the land. We dont need all this starch anymore more sitting in front of the computer. It's just nonsense... and, when I look at how poorly McDougall has aged , he looks 20 years older than my 85 year old father!! Btw, the only person to get cancer in my HUGE Ukrainian family on BOTH sides was the long-time vegetarian. And one relative developed diabetes because she ate the starchy , sugary foods. There was NO heart disease at all...Now, many of us are mostly carnivore, and I am 62 , have not seen a doctor in over 30 years, my parents in their mid-eighties, eat mostly carnivore and are on ZERO medications, renovating their new home, and enjoying life!! McDougall seems like a nice guy, but he is WAY off the mark, and likely causing great harm in the long run...He himself, has not aged well.... That is a BIG red flag for me...

And the dry starches (rice, beans, lentils, pasta, quinoa, oats, whole grain flours) are INEXPENSIVE and store very well at room temperature! Seriously, for my family of three, I'm not exaggerating when I say we save about $8,000 per year eating a diet centered around the dry starches. What could YOUR family do with an extra eight thousand dollars a year???
We have only been farming…growing starches for 12.000 years. What did we eat before that…meat, berries, fruit…not much starch before 12.000 years ago by then we had evolved to be what we are
Thank you Dr. Sometimes simple is the most complicated. We have a tradition on cooking and eating out that become só normal e easy to find around us. I am learning is taking me time. Thank you ❤❤
I followed this diet for about a week, and my blood glucose levels surged to alarming heights. My vision deteriorated significantly, and my neuropathy worsened, among other negative effects. I won't be continuing with it, thanks!
That’s because of all the fat in your cells based on the way you’ve been eating up until now. Giving up after only one week is throwing in the towel a bit too soon.
You do sound possibly very likely diabetic/pre-diabetic. If you have pre-existing neuropathy, you already have at least one significant existing medical condition. Kindly, this will always require medical supervision in diet change for anybody in that position, whatever type of diet. Especially if you're taking certain meds as well, as they'll need adjusting - if not, that might result in the symptoms you describe. As richoka has also helpfully hinted, you may have had high fat levels in cells? I can't speak for your individual health profile, but please consider this alongside appropriate medical supervision (which is necessary for some), and for medication adjustments. I'd contact the McD Program directly in your case. They take care of many people with always excellent published results, but some people need specialised approach to it.
Your microbiome is crap. You need to grow new bacteria in your gut so the diet change needs to be achieved GRADUALLY. You want to live longer - so you need patience. I'm 80 and I check my vision a dozen times a month. I don't need glasses. I drink a teas of ascorbic acid powder in 1-litre of water daily. This may help my vision.
You are my #1 Hero. I often say ...what would john say , and then quote your message. Love this tone and style. You maybe a street fighter.. but you are awesome. 😊
Street fighter true. Our docs here are 'thickheads'. They have no interest in health just "remove symptoms and make money" by selling more drugs and maiming people with surgery.
I was on the Pritikin diet in the early 80’s. 80% carbs, 10% proteins, 10% Fats. Got scared because I lost so much weight. I was also a jogger back then and I wound up jogging 17 miles one day and realized my initial goal was 2 miles when I first started jogging! I decided to cut back on jogging and add some fat and protein back in the diet. Got back to normal weight, but I don’t feel like I have found my best diet and fitness routine yet. Hard to believe we should not have any meat or fish, even Jesus ate fish!
Fat is addictive. Same with sugar and salt. Fat, even healthy fat, will give me another stroke as even vegetable fat thickens my blood. McDougall makes sense. I'm 80 and glad for each day I'm alive. Five days a week I swam 20 pool lengths until the vegetable fat I ate gave me angina. Fitness is not health it is just a part of health.
Meat was different back then. Much less fat and no environmental toxins. Also unless you were rich you only had meat maybe once a week to once a month way back then. No one except "kings and queens" was eating meat all day everyday. It was way too expensive. Most hurts failed. Well documented
I will try it :) I’ve always tried to limit starchy foods since people said it’s the worst. But I always needed it to feel full and healthy. Plus it’s very cheap and accessible. Much more than keto/carnivore etc
Hi Dr. McDougall, I just subscribed to you channel, because I heard from Sandy Hart on her You Tube that her daughter has lost 50 pounds fallowing your diet! Of course she mentioned your books that I am going to order and read it to become more familiarized! But I was wondering how we make bread without eggs and butter or milk, what is the substitutes? If any of your RUclips followers know about it please let me know!!
Dr McD : alcohol causes Avascular Necrosis - bone depletion when blood supply is limited. Soccer players deflect balls using the 7 inches between their eye sockets and the ears. They calculate spinA/spinB to pass, or beat their opponents. At 20/30 miles/ hour the impact can demage the capillaries, causing cataracs, headaches, tooth pain and vertigo.
My blood sugar levels are creeping up but the doctor says no fruit or sugar or starch which I know is wrong and I was going to try the Kempner diet although it’s rice, sugar, fruits and juices and Dr McDougall recommends this…. I’m on no diabetic medications so far but I want to keep it that way Can anyone help , much appreciated, I’m in my 70s
The Kempner diet was extreme and Dr Kempner recommended that his patients be supervised. I don't think it would be safe to do it alone. I'd suggest checking out Dr Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes book and Dr McDougall's book, The Starch Solution. The Physicians' Committee (PCRM) - Dr Barnard's organisation - offers online medical appointments and Dr McDougall's organisation offers a course to help people change their diet and lifestyle. Both offer medical support. Dr McDougall's programme is expensive but you are considered a patient of theirs for life once you have done it and can consult with them anytime, as far as I understand. I don''t know how much PCRM charges for appointments. If feasible, it might be worth contacting them to find out more.
Yes, fruit can cause blood sugar levels to go up, unfortunately. I use a home monitor although I do not have diabetes. Any kind of fruit makes it go up temporarily. Use lowest glycemic ones like an apple, berries and stay away from bananas, tropical fruit. I eat plant-based and my blood sugar is ok on these meals - just make sure there is plenty of fibre in the meal - wholegrain everything, skin on potato, lots of cooked and some raw veg with each meal. If you can tolerate it, a tsp of cider vinegar in water before each starch meal helps lower the sugar. Keep meals small - we don't actually need heaped platefuls!
Hi does anyone know if you can come off anticoagulants drugs by eating a plant based starch diet.😊 I tried to explain to my cardiologist that i don't eat animal products and so my blood would be thin...went straight over his head ####
@@peter5.056 hi thank you....I have only had 2 episodes of AF in a year. I have had 3 heart ablations for Afib, the last one was successful and its been 3 years since having these 2 episodes. Of course since I told my cardiologist he has put me back on the antigoglant. I'm getting side effects from taking them as I did before...I will need to speak to him and see what he can suggest.
Get a finger stall to test the thickness of your blood at home (Oxymeter). Even vegetable oil (3-avocado daily) will thicken my blood. Our docs in Australia are NUTS. I avoid them. I'm 80 and will not take ANY doc meds. All oils are bad for me. The best oils for me are those oils in green vegetables. Docs make money only from SICK people. YOU MUST NOT EAT HEALTHY AS DOC WILL LOSE MONEY.
Oil in a bottle, as opposed to the oil contained in an avocado, olive, nut, seed, or whatever. Once the oil has been separated from its plant of origin, it becomes a 'free' oil, no longer accompanied by the fibre and nutrients in the plant. Dr McDougall was not keen on higher fat whole foods either (e.g. avocado, nuts, seeds, soya) but he said they were OK now and then. In his Food Poisoning Color Picture Book (free to read on his website), foods containing substantial natural fats are in the amber (caution) category but free oils are in the red (no) category.
Darn been on it for couple months now but I've only lost 12 pounds and those last 2 pounds comes back then I lose it again etc over an over again but I havnt lost anymore need to lose at least 20 more I weigh 157 and I'm only 5 ft tall and I'm 66 years of age with prior hysterectomy and gallbladder removal so no hormones...any suggestions?
Look up Chef AJ and Calorie Density on You Tube and thoroughly grasp that topic. That is key to your success. Me. I'm 71 and started 12 years ago following the starch based way of eating, and permanently dropped 120 pounds. You can too!
You can stay true to the starch diet without eating gluten. Potatoes have every nutrient to survive and thrive. Rice, beans, corn, bananas are good but not as complete as sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. You don't have to have potatoes every meal.
@@annegallagher8284 actually it’s fear. Humanity is always playing defense because of the unknown. Here today gone tomorrow and with so many theory’s about the afterlife who can blame em.
The early episodes where Dr McDougal goes to Wendy’s, Burger King and Sizzler looking for proper food…. i’m not a vegan myself, but I freaking love those episodes.🤘👍
There are no long lived healthy populations or cultures that ever consumed a starch based diet. The ones that did was because that is all they could get and their immune system was never strong enough to fix minor problems that arrived so their life expectancy was low. The cultures that had more consistent access to animal protein and fat had better health and were able to create the USA, build cars, airplanes and develop the zoom which the man in the video admires. The people who were able to create zoom, cars, airplanes, rollercoasters, Pertussis vaccine, cure for Pellagra, rocket ships, FM radio, microscopes, the discovery of Vitamin B5 (Roger J. Williams), zero of them ever consumed a starch based diet, Zero means none.
Politely and kindly Stan, you are so far behind a robust science based approach here (the science which produced the wonders you also list here, btw) it's saddening to see. You (and Jenny here, as her comment falls into the same realm) may want to read the Starch Solution text by Dr M, or at least look through his long length presentations on YT on this (that reference the scientific literature extensively), and you may well be very surprised by what you find. I can promise you it's worth the time invested, many times over. By the way you write, you appear to be a newbie here and this is typical of many - that's not a crime of course, but you're (a) confusing correlation with causation, as well as (b) "good enough, for a time" type diets with the "optimum" for human populations. Good luck.
@@JohnDoe-xk1dv Using words such as politely, kindly, robust and good luck are not facts and provide no evidence you have any specific knowledge about anything. If you think my facts are wrong provide specific details and I will correct any error but so far you have not been able to do this. There is no such thing as a starch solution as that is not an accredited term by anything.
@@StanDupp6371 I did suggest sources for you to look at Stan from Dr M, that will indeed clarify facts, at length - whether you choose to do so or not again is up to you of course, but you will find the evidence base there in those sources from the scientific literature well cited. Again, I wish you well.

If you can tolerate it, a tsp of cider vinegar in water before each starch meal helps lower the sugar. Keep meals small - we don't actually need heaped platefuls!

He has got it right all along! It’s starch

Would this diet help my husband with his arthritis in his cervical spine?
Hi does anyone know if you can come off anticoagulants drugs by eating a plant based starch diet.😊 I tried to explain to my cardiologist that i don't eat animal products and so my blood would be thin...went straight over his head ####
noooooooooo. If you're on anticoagulants for AFib or some other reason, you NEED to stay on them!
@@peter5.056 Wrong. I went off those meds, became a Vegan, and now I control my AFib with Vagal maneuvers. I have been doing them for over 20 years.
What about protein..veg based of course
U get protein frm beans etc
John Mcdougall is an incredible human being.
What can you season the rice and vegetables with? Pasta? No butter or oil on bread? No condiments?
Legend
What are free oils?
Did he die from malnutrition
Sounds like cancer speed run
Thank you.
Where are the blood test results and other studies for this diet?
What's for dinner? My mother always answered with the vegetable(s)
Dr. Lorraine Day died a few months ago at the age of 87.
Can't take the annoying drone music anymore. Do they think I'm a moron with a short attention span
One word... "WALK"! as much as you can, every day.
Avoid oils
Look up Chef AJ and Calorie Density on You Tube and thoroughly grasp that topic. That is key to your success. Me. I'm 71 and started 12 years ago following the starch based way of eating, and permanently dropped 120 pounds. You can too!
Have you looked at the Maximum Weight Loss Program? It’s on the McDougall website. :)
Yes but not sure what if anything I am doing wrong? I was doing so good then it just stopped
your concept is a treasure of our world. I love your spirits, thankyou very much ,LOve and hope your happiness.
Are nuts ok?
What about olive oil
No oil
Sad to hear Doc McD has passed. Dr. Esselstyn said "unexpected death" . I wonder how and why. The diet was safe and sound. A Leader in this field!
He and his wife got the c19 injections, so he could visit his grandchildren.

The Chinese also eat dogs cats snakes etc
A lot of gluten , I could not do this diet, I can do without the meat but bread, pasta no can do.
You can stay true to the starch diet without eating gluten. Potatoes have every nutrient to survive and thrive. Rice, beans, corn, bananas are good but not as complete as sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. You don't have to have potatoes every meal.
Everyone is different. You know your body best. Stay away from meat and dairy too
Lol this poor guy is gonna get grilled by Big Carnivore !
Exactly. It is all about money.

The early episodes where Dr McDougal goes to Wendy’s, Burger King and Sizzler looking for proper food…. i’m not a vegan myself, but I freaking love those episodes.🤘👍
Hahahahaha, did we evolve eating starches? Or did we evolve eating meat?
Why did you pass away at only 77 as a vegan? jack Lalane djed at 96.
Go Raw!
It also ages u
... (The backround music is very annoying.)
I love it! 😊
Just talking about human health while animals are being violently oppressed is lame AF.
Starch based diet makes me sick. Animal based with fruit,… and sometimes fruit based,….. and beer too,…. keep me best.
Egypt and Mesopotamia crying in the corner
I agree. I got as far as " and avoid all animal products " and stopped the video. Everyone to their own, but my body needs protein.
This is a ridiculous diet! Humans needs MEAT!!!
