And these two are actually based on real people who lived through the Bakumatsu, Hajime Saitō and the Shinsengumi were real, and Kenshin is inspired on Kawakami Gensai 😁💪🏼☀️...
After goku and vegeta I'd put L and light, then yugi and seto. This was my childhood but feel like their story wasn't as deep as other rivalries in anime
I love the way they sold us on Saito's Gatotsu. The final, perfected version of the left-handed thrust. It cannot be blocked, nor dodged. All you can do is try to keep it from piercing your vital organs. And the only thing scarier than facing it is when Saito uses it on you again after you've been carved up.
No matter how may times I see this fight, I can't help but wonder how the rest of the story would have played out, if Kenshin had simply twisted his sword to the bladed part, let alone have a traditional katana, when doing that 360 degree spin, at the end.
Technically Kenshin won this fight. The first real fatal blow was when Kenshin hit the back of Saito’s neck. If that were a real sword, the fight would have ended there.
Bruh, the animation on his hair tie being destroyed is so clean, and you just know Kenshin's about to show everyone in the dojo how he earned his nickname.

Sanosuke crushes the gun and there's absolutely no dramatic cuts or pause to emphasize it like that's just normal, we all just crush guns to get rid of them because they aren't made of steel that's strong enough to handle little explosions. The list of things wrong with the remake is long....at least they got the story right.
Don't care even if its a reverse blade. That swing at the back of the head was technically already game over. And the sheer force of being push from the attack to a dozen feet. Im amaze that his head didn't pop like a balloon. And yea i know its an anime but still. Just an observation.
I think the reason why it didn't is because there is still a part of Ken that doesn't want to kill so he held back on that attack just enough cause otherwise that should have broken his neck. If I remember it right I think that is even said latter in this fight by Kaoru.
Its the use of color and music to create atmosphere that makes this blow the new version out of the water, despite the new version having some good animation
Hey future self here…they didn’t and this version if the fight is waaaaaay better than the remake. Music and everything. Kenshin and yahiko’s english dub sounds the same though to a degree. Karou sound like she from bawwstunn
The tension build up with the clock ticking and the Sun going down. Kenshin eyes mutation and the reflection in his sword. I missed all these little details in this fight, the new anime version it's kinda boring to be honest... So sad
This is what the new anime is missing, the ambiance. Everything is shaded darker whenever there's a shift. The audience will have to ponder if Kenshin is really winning. Even if Saito is backed down he gets up again plus Kenshin surrendering to his past means he is infact losing. We don't get this kind of feeling and the music in the new anime doesn't have the melancholy of the old one.
That moment kenshins eyes turned like a wolf still gives me goosebumps. Imagine doing your best to forgive yourself then all of a sudden the demons that you kept lock inside you was set free
I think the technical limitations that the animators were working under back then actually worked in their favor. Since they couldn't rely on speed and dynamism like modern animators, they had to take a more measured and atmospheric approach, and that gave it more soulful depth and weight.
I'm Japanese, but Kenshin's dubbed voice suits him very well! Also, the 1996 version of the anime is beautiful compared to today's anime. It was said to be the most beautiful anime in Japan at the time.
If I was saito I would have admitted defeat after taking that hit to the back of my neck cause damn even after a 10 year rusty Kenshin landed a fatal blow (if it was a normal katana) that would have killed me
Just watched the new version. This one, the original is still better. There's some fights the new one does better due to its animation quality. However, this fight is one of those where it can't compare to the original.
it aways amazes me how else saito did not die on that back of the neck clean strike, if the blade side was used , saito's head would have flown off haha Battosai is truly a demon , however it is Kenshin that strike so that saito can still retain his head
1996 version tops the 2023 version. The subtle details of the fight and transition from Kenshin to Battousai is done much better in the 1996 version. Love the power struggles and larger philosophical battles explored in the old version. It’s so much more serious and better character dubbing too.
I think the new series of kenshin did a lot of things better than the original, the Jine fight being the prime example of this, but this fight is unmatched regardless of adaptations. None in the new or old series come close to how good this one is.
U cant remake a masterpiece and expect it to be much better.. the 2023 version lacks the killer instincts of these 2.. the OG version is just irreplaceable..

Same can be said about saito, he held back too
