Rurouni Kenshin - Kenshin Cuts Down Cho - Dub Comparison
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 янв 2022
- Rurouni Kenshin has two different dubs.
One produced by Sony between 1998 and 2000. The other from Bang Zoom between 2000 and 2002.
Personally I much prefer the latter, as it generally has a much much superior and more accurate script. Arguably better casting and far less...odd deviations.
I don't think the Sony dub is unwatchable by any stretch, and I would be fine watching it if it was the only dub available but I think it really pales in comparison for sure.
While my thoughts on it are less favorable than Bang Zoom. This is one scene where I think Kenshin's scream in the Sony version is far superior. Even if I think most of the atmosphere and dialogue exhibited by the other characters in the Bang Zoom Dub is more fitting.
Note: Don’t mess with the children or Kenshin will throw away his oath to kill you.
exactly. he became the batousai to fight for the future he believed in. And the children are the very top and bottom of that. Cho really had it coming and he's lucky that was a reverse edge blade.
@@Dansuperfly what is a reverse edge blade and why is he lucky
Richard "Hayworth" Cansino is so good as Kenshin, they kept him in the second dub 😅
they ruined it...that they did... lmao
Hey my last name is Cancino lol !
Nothing beats bang zoom dub. Perfect
Why does the Kenshin on Hulu sound so different
@@teshahartke5468hulu is the Sony Dub, while Netflix and Toonami is Bang Zoom Dub, the much better one overall
I would call bang zooms dub the gold standard of how to dub anything where you take your time analyzing, watching the Japanese dub by listening to the VAs vocal performances, look at the original script and read the source material to create and translate an anime into something that respect its source material while presenting it in a way that's easy for English watchers from all walks of life to follow and enjoy
To me, not only is the Bang Zoom dub better directed - but the audio quality is so much better. Cause there are times the Sony dub where (other than some bad/weird casting or voice direction choices) just sounds like it was a fan-made dub with whatever equipment they had. Kinda like the early parts of DBZ:A.
The Bang Zoom dub for me I feel had the best voice for Kenshin
The lines felt really off and unnatural
The Sony Dub blows. The Media Blasters dub is a lot better. They gave Cho a southern accent to represent the fact he speaks with a Kansai accent. That was a nice touch imo.
I overall agree that the Media Blasters/Bang Zoom dub is superior overall based off of what I have checked from both. But from an overall perspective I think if the Sony dub was the only existing dub, I probably wouldn't mind watching it as a whole. I do think that in some ways though it drops the ball...pretty hard with some of its script deviations, although I will admit some of them can be entertaining. Like how Kenshin is sometimes a bit of an unusual jerk to others heh.
I agree with you, the Sony isn't good overall. Only Kenshin sounds just as good in both dubs. Everyone else is worse in the Sony.
They actually did something similar in Guilty Gear Strive by giving Baiken a southern accent as well.
Funny thing is, Kenshin's VA is the same person in both dubs
As a person who prefers subs than dubs, Rurouni Kenshin is an exception! Dubs win! I love Richard Casino's version of Kenshin.
so true man
I'm not fond of English dub but I gotta admit this has a good quality English dub. I actually prefer watching Samurai X in English dub. Richard Cansino's voice is perfect for Kenshin. I don't really praise English voice actors but this dude did a great job voicing Kenshin. He got my respect
@@erenyeagerist7681Me too. Considering I first saw Rurouni Kenshin as Samurai X. Not sure which one though. I never knew that there were two English dubs. Honestly, I just learned it today. 😅 Never bothered to do research. It was a long time ago since I have seen it when it was first aired in our country. But it was so memorable that I still have all of the opening and ending themes in my music folder. The OST of the OG was really a banger. Also, I have just re-watched the English subbed and I still feel in awe of Mayo Suzukaze-san's voice as Kenshin. She really put her heart into the character.
Just imagine if it wasn’t a reverse-blade sword, simply imagine the mental toll that would affect Kenshin.
I remember the first time I saw this ep years and years ago. And how amazing it felt that it was a reverse blade all along and that feeling where shakku had a realization like kenshin that to usher in the new era, they would have to change their killing ways. It was well-written.
He would have completely reverted to Battosai the Manslayer, and likely died at the hands of Shishio due to not learning the Kuzuryūsen and the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki.
@@Synthwave89I think he would have won against Shishio either way. Kenshin connected direct hit multiple times while fighting against Shishio imagine the same but with normal sword.
@@MukeshRajasekar if kenshin use normal blade, his enemy name was SUSHIO back then
@@imiimo1800 Exactly my point
This was when Anime Dubbing started to take off in high quality! Some of these voice actors are STILL dubbing in top anime like Naruto, JJK, OP, Bleach
To be honest, I only found out about the Sony dub in recent years. I see they took the anime in a different direction, which is interesting and good to have a different perspective, but it had the typical localization/modernization problems. they made Kenshin a totally different person, This Kenshin seemed like he just quit killing because war made him crazy, like some lonely, frustrated homeless war vet with PTSD and MPD triggers, it was a bit deeper than that, but at least it had great voice actors and they got most of them to reprise their roles in the other English dub.
yah,
From this clip alone, I can see how distorted the characters already are because of the dialogues.
I do think that the original English dub was far superior to the Japanese dub and the dialogues were like excepts from the Bible,
but this one seems shallow.
Well the Sony dub was...yea. no.
The 2000 dub is far superior...and Kirk does MUCH BETTER as Saito instead of Cho.
I grew up with the Sony Dub. I was wondering where manslayer came from
Man I grew up with the Sony dub and I prefer it even though it wasn't consistent with the japanese translation. And even though it's been years since I watched Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin, I can still tell that the voice actor for Cho from the Bang Zoom dub is the same voice actor for Sanosuke in the Sony dub.
Where can i find sony dub
@@shahsyedzamal6226 there used to be a torrent link back then, several years ago but I wasn't able to download it due to having awful internet. I'm sure its still floating around. You can try googling it.

That Sony dub when kenshin shouted nooo before he shouted was epic
They keep making a traumatized vet fight.
I definitely prefer the media blasters version compared to the sony dub, but to be fair I am sure it has it moments of brilliance that may make me prefer it over the media blaster version, everything has it's pros and cons, moments that make this or that stand out for them respectively, likewise beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Still I really do love how all of the dub versions had kenshin fighting an inner turmoil over whether or not to pull the reverse blade sword, in the japanese version (which caused me to re-seek this clip to refresh my memory of the fight because I really did think he was reluctant to pull the sword out.) legit just has him pulling it out and divulging its secret(s) really quickly, whereas the dub versions really increased the stakes, and had us held in just as much suspense as kenshin, adding that extra bit where he believed he was handed a sword that could kill with an immense amount of ease, compared to the reverse blade sword, and while it is still true the reverse blade sword can kill, it definitely allows kenshin to fight without restraint, if it was a real sword he would have to considerably pull his swings and power in order not to kill anyone with it.
I really love how in depth the fights of rurouni kenshin usually were, they often told more than 1 story, and they tended to have us on the edge of our seats in how will kenshin get out of it.
Now obviously it is a far from perfect anime, as matter of fact there isn't a perfect anime or perfect person out there, but still I really did/still do enjoy the memories that rurouni kenshin gave me when I first watched it.
0:35 1999 Sony Dub scream
1:58 2001 Bang Zoom! Dub scream
Bang Zoom just sounds like he's charging up, while Sony it really sounds like you can hear the struggle he's going through reverting back to battousai to save the child
The sony scream is awful. Very glad i didnt get to experience the entire series in sony dub.
@@Raydnt69but it sounds kinda hokey in the Sony version.
Can't believe I was in a public park performing these techniques out lout with with my Count Dooku light saber when I was a kid.
I like Cho's voice in this dub.
I love how they gave cho an accent. afaik he's from kansai and their accent is kind of equivalent to a southern drawl if I'm not mistaken, so the second one is more accurate.
Bang Zoom was what I heard on Adult Swim, thanks for helping me relieve part of my youth, Cho is phenomenal in Bang Zoom.
Sony dub is the one that aired in my local TV station (studio 23 and Axn asia on cable) in the late 90s
I legit think the Dub is bettter than the sub
me2
One of the rare ones indeed
Yeah could never get into kenshin voice in sub
But some of the dub va don’t sound right to me sometimes
A lot of the side characters are really rough in the dub, but I think the original does a pretty bad job with Kenshin (it is way too obviously an actress) and that this is pretty hard to overcome.
Lol no definitely not
Grew up with Bang zoom. Sounds way better and had more raw feeling!
I grew up with the Sony dub ... and learned of Bang Zoom dub later when I decided to re-watch ... gotta say, the Bang Zoom dub might be more faithful but Sony dub had more panache
The Sony dub is so good
I just have to say it. Cho is a seriously twisted, alternate version of Trigun's Vash the Stampede. The designs are pretty similar, not counting their respective outfits, and no one will ever be able to convince me otherwise. 😂
That said, the media blasters dub is by far my favorite. That was my first exposure to Kenshin and his bunch, and the one available when I started my anime collection.
Never saw it on adult swim. Only toonami.
Kenshin scream was way better in media blasters dub
The Sony dub is hilarious. For example they renamed several characters and they made the Kuzuryusen the Hiten Mitsurgi's ultimate attack while the Hirameki was just something Hiko created. There were several other things made me laugh, and I only watch a bit of it.
I especially remember the terrible pronunciation in Sony dub.
It was always annoying seeing crappy dubs 1st then later seeing sub or better dub.
Despite the increased accessibility, the crappy dub becomes a cheated experience when you finally see better version(s) - 4Kids being a major offender.
This is where they got the idea for sword Love Hashira of Demon Slayer
Love the bang zoom dub. Especially siato
I admit this may be a personal bias, but I prefer the Bang Zoom dub. There are just a few choice changes in dialogue I feel were superior and Cho's accent, while silly, is much more unique. Both dubs are still good though!
The Sony dub is objectively inferior
Agreed, the Zoom is much better. Good point in the accents, that southern Mississippi draw they gave Cho is not only more memorable but it reflects his character better. He's a country boy swordsman for hire who just likes to kill without any personal grudges. He will do whatever he can for fun, and to fulfill the mission. That fits the voice of a redneck hillbilly fighter than a sassy-sounding richguy. The Sony is boring and rather bland compared to the Zoom.
Sony dub is just sad 😭
Bang zoom is a whole lot better and more intense
2:24 Lil'Jon moment 😅
I grew up with the adult swim version and I was disapointed when it sounded different on hulu, but I feel like the sony dub is a lot less corny and makes for better tv. So im glad they picked the good one for hulu even if its not what I was used to. Don't really care if it's authentic or not
Sony Kenshin: I'll show him hit-and-miss'erugi style close up!
Bang Zoom Cho: Miss 'er? I hardly even know 'er!
The Sony the dub is waaay better than the sub version. This is the only anime that I watched dub.
Cho: Let's have a fair fight...
Kenshin: I have no weapon, I'm wounded and to top it off, you've got an hostage, is that your idea of a fair fight?
I prefer the Sony dub because it's what I grew up watching. The voices fit perfectly to the characters. And I think "battousai the slasher" sounds cooler compared to "battousai the man slayer".
I watched the 2001 dub first and tried watching the sony dub and I just can’t it’s so bad
Though I watched the Sony dub all the way through, I prefer “battousai the man slayer”
I can understand preferring the dub you grew up with but I cant fathom thinking "battousai the slasher" sounds cooler than "battousai the man slayer" lol
I also grew up with Sony Dub as a child. It had led me to love anime.
@@ZerdsJames idk bro, they got a lot of the pronouciations wrong in the bang zoom dub, especially their pronunciation of battousai and kenshin (Kenshins name 剣じ would literally be pronounced kenji) . The sony dub stays more true to the Japanese pronunciation of of those words.
I'm looking forward to the remake of this scene.
Sony dub for me please.
@Wonder- Games, where can I find the complete season of the 1999 dub?
The Sony (1998-2000 Dub) is/was definitely on a streaming service. I want to say Hulu is what it was.
It always makes me laugh when the guy shouts "Don't do that!" Like he's talking to a prankster lmfao
Lmaoo fr like his kid aint about to die
Where can the Sony dub be found/downloaded
The Bang Zoom version is by far my favorite dub
I think we should just accept that whatever version we grew up with is the one that we prefer. Nostalgia is a huge factor, and there’s nothing wrong with that! I was in high school when RK was on Toonami (M-F, 4pm-6pm), and I remember being so much more excited about weekdays than weekends, and I’ll always associate it with the BZ dub.
I first heard Kenshi , Kaori , Sanosuki and Yoshi when I first saw this
Imagine my surprise years later when I heard Kenshin , Karou , Sanosuke and Yahiko
I’ve been looking for the Sony dub everywhere and I can’t find it all all 😢
The Bang Zoom Dub southern accent on Cho...lol
Episode number please
The original bang zoom dub is legendary and perfect.
Bang Zoom was my favorite version.
If it was a real sword, there was nothing left for Cho
They released ova movies around 2011 that remastered the Kyoto Arc and had this scene in it as well but i felt the ova scene was lack luster. You don't see/hear the pain in Kenshin when he decides to strike Cho down as much as you do in the Bang Zoom version which is by far the superior cut imo.
It's kinda insane the quality difference between the Bang Zoom and the Sony. The Bang Zoom is worlds apart. Hulu STILL streams the Sony dub which is inferior in every way.
Greatest anime ever created
Why they take the full episode of RUclips in English
I didn’t know there were two dubs. I got the DVD’s as they released so bang zoom ftw
Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu Ryu Kan Sen Tsumuji
ost name?
Dude learned the hard way.
I watched the Sony dub as a kid first time watching samurai x, and i loved the show very much it brings back memories of me, my siblings going back home from school to turn the TV and watch it with our mom all that being said i still prefer the bang zoom dub after I re-watched it as an adult, it just better than the Sony one.
kenshin sounds nearly identical in all the dubs
I can really feel the anger of the bang zoom dub scream.
Witch dub was on Netflix?
I spent my Saturdays watching the Sony dub. So that's near and dear to my heart
Nahh why did his yelling make me laugh 😭😂
I feel like Justin Cook would be an amazing CHO.
Yoooo what’s the soundtrack 😂
2001 bang zoom dub forever
I tried my best to listen to this in a critical fashion, instead of focusing on the 2001 dub I grew up watching through adult swim.
I would day that Mr. Casino really did a bang up job as Kenshin in both- everyone seem to be unaimus that he would be kenshin. I would say him speaking to himself in the midst of the strike Instead of him announcing the technique name gave a angrier mentality then that of a killer. Because if he is returning to the Batossai in this sceen, then he would focus solely on the kill. So I think that little bit changed the characters depth drastically in the sony dub.
As for Cho- having the voice actor for Sito voice him gives him a sense of strength that isn't there in the character. Cho's more recognized voice (2001 actor) may have an odd choice of accent, but it does convey that Cho is sly and willing to use people as an adventage- like the tools he hunts for. Having Sito's actor voice him also doesn't go well for this line sito says, "Mongrel dogs who don't know their place should not bark"! He said thos to Usui after recognizing his weakness that he hid under a very demonic and powerful persona. Saying this with a voice that conveys an authority of a man who can not only read people, but has authority to call it out. Cho never had an idea of authority in the Jun-po-gatina, so why have a voice that scaves against his personality?
Finally, the delivery of lines was very shotty, especially right before Kenshin goes for hos strike and during it, it conveyed a jumble while it should have conveyed rushed intensity. If my brain has to focus OUT noise and see the results instead of being led by the voices to the act, then we have a problem of conveyance.
Overall: they are both awesome and cheese 🧀, but I can def say the 2001 rendition, from what I am seeing, had a better focus on character and performance.
Why was there two different Englsih dubs of this?
Idk maybe is because i grew up watching the sony dub version but to me it always be more superior idk maybe its because i love the way they say each others names better then i do the bang zoom dub and also the intro song for the first season also hits different then the bang zoom version i think here in america u guys got the bang zoom dub version while me living in aruba i got the sony dub version so thats probably why i prefer it over the bang zoom since i grew up on the sony dub version
Second is the best
2001 cast dub is best version
My mind can't be changed
Cho got Mitsuri Kanrojis ribbon sword 😂😂
"That move! He ain't human, its almost like he's some kind of machine!" That Cho quote is so good and really gives Kenshin that feeling like he really is that next level of Samurai, a level regular humans aren't able to achieve.
The only anime I would watch in English dub
really?
Yu yu hakusho?
Full metal Alchemist?
Cowboy Bebop?
There's plenty with on par or superior english dubs.
bang zoom❤
I like samurai x in japanese and English dub
Man…. Anime at its peak
I didn't even know there was a Sony dub lol
The fact Kenshin was willing to Kill Cho is even more insane
Sony dub is underrated
i like sony than bang zoom
I prefer sony dub just because it reminds me of when i was watching this at axn
Sony blond hair voice actor did good.
Weird hearing Saito play Cho there. Bang Zoom dub is overall better, but I do like the voice of the old man more in the Sony dub mainly because he legitimately sounds his age
W H A T 😳
Sony dub Cho kinda sounds like BZ dub Saito 😂
This Epic Scene Was Ruin In The " RURUONI KENSHIN NEW KYOTO ARC MOVIE "
1996 is the best version, so much better than this
0:49 we shouldn't have let Joe Biden like that
2001 did it right
SONY DUB FOR SCRIPT WORD ...BANG ZOOM FOR EFFECTS
the whole battousai the slasher really sucked, but battousai the man slayer was so much better. Such a great anime, one of my favorites.
2001 best
2001 dub is better, but it just can't beat the JP dub.
Lmao
Sony dub is way better than other dubs
Hmmm, let me sum this up:
