I'm 76 yrs. old, have been using and playing with knives all my life and with your video, found out that I have been doing so, inefficiently. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Thank you.
Yes--I have noticed so many "outdoorsmen" demonstrating blades with that inefficient forward push cut. Your illustrated cuts and techniques project guide is on my list to buy. Simple but brilliant. I learn much from your videos, even after 50+ years of whittling with mostly Victorinox pocket knives. Thanks!
OMG Felix man... you have the knack of simplifying knife usage so any one can under stand.. Your description of how a cut works is brilliant. People thrash with their knives all the time, By making a conscious effort to convert from push split motion to the proper windshield wiper cutting motion, radically changes the efficiency of the cut. I tried your instruction and immediately a difficult knife to use became an easy knife to use. Feather sticks here i come. it is no wonder that you make a Victorinox accomplish any task.. It may seem simple and obvious but it is not... well done again thank you for sharing your knowledge. J
Felix, you are an outstanding teacher. Your description, narration, speaking pace, emphasis, use of good humor (your windshield wiper sound effect in this lesson helps stick the tip in memory) and your knowledge and skillful demonstration are excellent. Well done! Exemplary teaching and demonstration of a new skill. And that tip is a very good one. Thanks!
Very good information on how to increase cutting performance . Your videos are the best Mr. Immler and it's always great to see you healthy and happy . Thanks again
This is very very basic but very very important as well! I've seen even some self-proclaimed chefs, who press into the knife, without sliding it. I don't remember who told me this, but I'm sure glad they did as it much safer. The more you press into the blade the bigger the chance of cutting yourself of course. I'm loving this playlist so much, and I learnt a lot already, thank you Felix! (and cameraman :)
You must have been driving my old truck in the rain ! Those are the exact sounds my windshield wipers make! Another great tip. I’ve seen videos of people doing this cut both ways and your demonstration of the cut is much more efficient. Thanks.
Recently there has been a trend with bushcraft knives for the blades to get thicker and thicker and for the fixed blade knife to be used for wood work and not game whereas historically the folder was for wood and the fixed blade with a much finer blade than you see today kept for game butchery. Felix your expertise and insight not only makes the rest of us better users but highlights the knowledge shortcomings in the field. Felix Immler prophet of the knive blade!
It’s just like that adage. “A good craftsman never blames his tools”. I wouldn’t use it as an absolute but in the case of my use of knives it was my inefficiency not the knife’s.
Felix, I think that this could possibly be your most important and valuable video so far. Here's a story for you: When I was about four years old my great grandfather, who was a carpenter and Not a swordsman, was also a massive showoff! He owned a razor sharp cutlass and he demonstrated its sharpness by slicing cigarette papers into fine shreds. Then came his party trick, all done with dramatic showmanship, he placed an apple on my mother's outstretched hand, he whirled the cutlass over his head and brought it sharply down onto the apple, cutting the apple in half and leaving my mother's hand without so much as a scratch. You've just demonstrated how that fabulous trick works, brilliant :) All the best to you
So very informative! Thank you Felix. I have been helping teach my boys and other scouts how to use knives for years and have only stressed safety and not much. But now I can teach technique as well.
I had no idea that people used a push-only cut...I thought this push-slice technique was self-evident until I checked out some other bushcrafter's channels and noticed that they did in fact push-only cutting (mostly American bushcrafters in general use or Britishbushcrafters but then only while making feather sticks). Very well spotted sir and as I see from the comments that you have helped a great many folk make better use of their knife blades. Huge respect to you. Thanks.
@Michael - I don't have the small screwdriver for any of my SAKs and thanks for reminding me to do the research on how to order a few . I purchased some extra tweezers years ago . All the best .

Amazing, Felix! I think I use the slicing motion when I use the knife, but I'll have to try it (tomorrow) while paying attention. I always thought it was because you were, in effect, sawing your way through the wood; I had not considered that slicing was similar to changing the angle to the wood, thus slimming, or narrowing, the cutting edge. As David Smith said (3 years ago) even I, at the age of 71, have learned something new. Actually, under your tutelage, I've learned many new things! You are a marvelous teacher and your humor -- I'll long remember your windshield wiper sound effects while carving in the future! Thank you Felix!!
This is the technique I have always used, & although I know it to be the correct technique, I never really knew or understood why. It's good to have it explained. Thanx Felix, & greetings from New Zealand.
Fantastic explanation Felix! And I love the sound effects.... 😂 You definitely have a way of explaining techniques that makes it easy to understand and learn!
Best vid ever! Now i understand why i have been having such a hard time with this. I just gave up all together! Still too short though, love. I miss watching you create things (one of my favorites is when you made the hot tub in the woods! Crazy, funny, fantastic that one was).

Another very instructive video of yours - great sound effects! Watched videos 1 to 14 of your series til now and - being a Victorinox-lover for more than 50 years now -still learned some new tricks., thanks. But I'm missing a trick for doing heavy, but very controlled cuts that I know: put the forearms tight to your chest and hold the knife in a reverse grip (the blade sticking out between thumb and index finger with the edge facing away from your body). Cutting close to your body gives you the most power and keeping your arms pressed against the body gives you very much control at the same time. No bystanders endangered.
Beim Schnitzen habe ich nie richtig darauf geachtet, aber mit hat mal eine Köchin gezeigt, wie man schneiden kann . . Danke Dir für den Denkanstoß. Gruß Tino
