This product would be a way to have an extra fire starter without taking up extra space in your kit. I like having a ferro rod on me in case my lighter doesn’t work for whatever reason, and this would let me keep it with an edc knife in my pocket without taking up any extra space. Edward Fletcher, I’ve not tried the corkscrew insert, but I do know that the toothpick version doesn’t fit in the RangerGrip series toothpick. Found this out the hard way. I have a snapped one still lodged into mine.

From this video the most important take-away was your comment about having the appropriate tinder. As preparation is the mantra for all who travel in nature and the outdoors, it is clear that part of that is to pack several different sources of tinder material. Fortunately, it is not at all bulky, and one can easily pack enough for hundreds of fires and scarcely notice the weight or bulk of that tinder. As was pointed out even fine birch bark shavings are not always easy to ignite. Thanks Felix, for a most enlightening video and some extremely important information. Note: If one carries with you in your pack a humble domestic candle, it will make a formidable team with the fire ant! The fire ant gives the initial small flame and once lit, the candle provides the strong sustainable flame to light the fire in almost any conditions. This video has conclusively exploded some long standing myths and assumptions about starting fires!

Aw, I missed the usual “Hello You Tube”. Great video as usual. Looked at these, but they were only available from the States at the time and the shipping to the UK made it unviable.
I had the same problem getting them shipped from the US, but now that Victorinox has picked them up they are much easier to get. I, too, miss the "Hello RUclips!"
Great video, as always. But, I can't imagine myself needing over 100 "emergency fires." So, why WOULDN'T I use this as my primary fire steel, especially when it is just a backup to my lighter?

These are nice to have, but when will you ever be outside with your pocket knife, but no other way to start a fire? For half the price I might get them, as it is they are just a gimmick for me
I've never heard about these accesories! A great addition for a survival sak. I'm still going to stick with my old ferro rod, as fireant costs just as much as a Huntsman in my country! Thanks for the video!

This was originally put out by a company called Tortoise Gear. The first micro fire steel replaces the toothpick on your knife and then they made these micro steel inserts for the SAK corkscrew. Neat that Victorinox picked up on it. The Tortoise gear ones also have glow in the dark plastic which is neat. No, I wouldn't use these as a primary fire source, but as a back-up, they are hard to beat. Thanks again Felix!

@@boola69 I do but there is a 'technique' to striking them. You strike along the top 'thin' edge, not the broad 'flat' edge. Also pull the blade (or striking surface) along the fire steel, don't pull the steel across the blade. But it does throw some sparks when you get it right.
@@brendanking7328 Yeah, I'd seen you used the narrow side on a review. I think I'll just stick to the ferrocerium rod as it takes up little space. BTW cotton balls soaked in Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) make amazing tinder, but you probably knew that.

I say the mini-ferro rod works great as a backup ignition source. Could also use tinder combos- helix tinder with birch bark or any of the others that worked well. Glad to hear The Huntsman SAK is your go-to. It's been my go-to as well for 30 years.
I've been using fire ants for a while, since the original crowd funding. Very happy with them. The huntsman is almost a complete survival kit with this. I see it as essential EDC.

100+ strikes! You have some patience! Thanks for doing this test. I took a cheap ferrorod/ magnesium combo from the dollar store, and used acetone to unglue the skinny rod from the magnesium block. Then put the ferrorod into a drill and spun it against 80 grit sandpaper (which took way too long) until it was narrow enough to slide into the corkscrew. Then I carefully cut it with a hacksaw. I used a Sharpie marker to (hopefully) protect it from moisture and voila: a home made sak ferrorod, which is as long as the corkscrew. It fits well into my Rangergrip 79 and the recess for the corkscrew keeps the ferrorod from falling out when the corksrew is put away, but I didn't add anything else to keep it in place with the corkscrew open, other than the friction fit. I suggest a file or some other means to remove the bulk of the material from the original rod. because sanding alone took way too long. I had to remove about a quarter of the diameter of the rod. Now, can I wrap some waxed jute twine around it for tinder.... ?
Hello Mr. Immler: I have been carrying and using the Tortoise Shell brand micro fire stick and helix tender for a year. I save the dryer lint from the filter in a bag I hand in the laundry room and use it for fires all the time. It's absolutely amazing for fire tinder, I also keep a large piece of flattened birchbark in my fire kit and a piece of fatwood.

I thought you were just going to use the tinder that came with it. But in the spirit of "Project Farm" You do the 100 fires... "We're Gonna Test That. Nice Work!, loved all the tinder selections.
😂😂😂 Good ol Todd has saved me a bunch of money and time. Two of THE best channels on YT
Great video, my friend!
Thank you very much!
One element for success you forgot is practice! You are very skilled building fires so this tool works well. I’m going to go practice now. Like shooting, building a fire is simple it’s just not easy.
I like this , it is smaller than a tiny bic, but to me it is still on the pricy side when compared to a disposable lighter. But I want my SAR tricked out to the max , oh why do I feel I got to have this in my life . great video as always Felix much love from the states
Totally agree
Super lieber Felix! Toll gezeigt und gute Besserung für deine rechte Hand, herzliche Grüße Sepp
This goes totally in the direction of things i didn't know but need :D
Thank you, Felix for another great video. I love your enthusiasm!
Impressive. I fully expected such a tiny fire steel to break before 100 fires could be struck.
Yes...me too 🤣 🤣
Vielen Dank Willi. Dein Kommentar freut mich sehr!
I save the dryer lint from the filter in a bag I hand in the laundry room and use it for fires all the time. It's absolutely amazing for fire tinder, I also keep a large piece of flattened birchbark in my fire kit and a piece of fatwood.
Great video Félix!!! The fire ant works great!!!
It's obviously worth it. As a SAK lover and as I've always have one on me. It would be great in an emergency. It could be as simple as going for a walk and getting lost
Excellent presentation as ever! Danke!
Many thanks!
I've wondered about this. Thanks for the great review!
Nicely done Felix. Proof! It works and that is good to know. For my use I'llk stick with matches, lighters, and full sized fero sticks but for emergencies or a backup source of fire this is great. Thank you.
Looks like a really useful add to our SAK, and gives another use to the cork-srew :) Interesting!
Diesmal stimmt „See you next friday“ sogar
Geil!
Great video. I have had success by taking thick piece of birch bark and then with very little pressure using knife at 90degrees to scrape along flattest section and creating a powder. Not only is that powder easy to light with spark but works with magnifying glass as well.
Thanks for the review. As always, excellent content!
I have this on my Swiss army knife Camper. Thankyou for the video
Thanks for watching!
Love your content, I have based my purchases of victorinox knives on your reviews.
Awesome, thank you!
