this song was played at my brother's funeral and there's nothing better to listen to when. I'm sad and it reminds me of all good times we had and no matter what happens I will never let him go from my heart he loved this song he used to sing it bless him RIP CHRISSY 💕💜💭😢
I lost one of my brothers January 13Th of this year 2018. He was only 2 years older than me at the age of 59. He got me hooked on U2 and now every time I hear this song it makes me think of him. I miss him every day. Rest in peace my brother.
I played this song when my dad was unwell with cancer, he's still here thank God but he got me into me U2 and this is his and my favourite song 🇮🇪☘️ God bless you 🙏
The absolute best live performance of this song of all time, I've seen them live and NEVER was close to how amazing this is, better than the album version. Timeless classic. Those who got to see this live in 1987 are indeed very lucky.
My favorite version. Watched a million times still gives me chills. Bono’s voice is so strong and add in Larry killing it around 4:40 just before the extra shine like stars verse... perfection..U2 forever
Anytime i hear this song and its not this version i get annoyed. This is the perfect rendition of this song. Perfect mixing, perfect drumming, even the guitar distortion is perfect. Bono's timing, and even the adlibbed "thank you" before the song reaches its creshendo is epic. The mixing is amazingly balanced and it feels like every instrument is singing.
It didn’t really last, now it annoys me on the newer songs. Nothing beats This album and earlier. When we got the free downloads that album was crap and the songs sound much better instrumental.
@@annunakiarzu5733 For many years, the growl has been gone from Bono's voice. I believe he began to decline vocally around the time of PopMart. You listen to this era, the versatility was amazing, and much of that was due to Bono's ability to low into something more primal -- almost guttural -- vocally. I suppose the succinct version is: Bono used to have a deep voice. He doesn't any longer. I also think that this partially dictated U2's tone as a whole. The songs now seem far too sacharine compared to the work they did in the 80s and 90s. I really miss this Bono and the U2 of War through POP.
I get shivers every time when listening to this live version. Mullen and Clayton's superb back up to the utter magnificence of Edge and his electric guitar.
By far the best live version of this song, over the years the tempo has been really slowed down to more of a soft ballad, however the faster more hard hitting tempo along with Bono's strong vocals plays really nice with this song. The highlight for me is 04:41 where the Edge solo leads into the Larry Mullen climax and into the shine like stars snippet from Bono... truly a masterpiece.
The way he sings is so sexy he seems to eat the microphone, this is a song I will play repeatedly without feeling out of date and 1987 is really a legendary year. Even I was not born in that time, but I feel I was living in that time.
It was a great time indeed... Even then I knew it would be a classic. The energy and tension of the music and his voice is awesome throughout. These were the days before rap when singers had to sing and every idiot wasn't holding up a cellphone blocking your view.
@A.C. why are they better than dylan? you realize dylan is up there with shakespeare, edgar allen poe dont you? saying the stones are better song writers is like saying the screenplay of the movie top gun is better than shakespeares romeo and juliet. sure some people even think bieber is better than dylan but critics worth their salt and history will show dylan as the greatest song writer and the father of modern rock n roll. you can like the stones more than dylan but that is just your taste. even the stones will tell you that they must carry his amp to his show not the other way around. the stones themselves will bow their knee to dylans genius, so why cant you?
thesongtowoody Bob Dylan is an excellent lyricists. one of the best. but in my opinion Bono can sing much much better. especially now that Dylan’s voice is so raspy.
Apparently you didn’t read his full comment...you know...about being an entertainer and singer. Why don’t you say Hank Williams is greater than Elvis Presley why you’re at it. 🙄
Check out the Rattle and Hum movie. You can see a lot of their live performances. Also try Under a Blood Red Sky Concert video. U2 had some great live performances that they recorded and sold on VHS and now DVD.
If I had to live on a desert island, I would definitely bring this great song in my suitcase. everything in this song is great : the atmosphere, the chord progression, the guitar solo at 4´15, the battery. Ideal to stop and dream during 5 mn !

best rock singer/song writer /preformer ever lived
no thats bob dylan.
@A.C. why are they better than dylan? you realize dylan is up there with shakespeare, edgar allen poe dont you? saying the stones are better song writers is like saying the screenplay of the movie top gun is better than shakespeares romeo and juliet. sure some people even think bieber is better than dylan but critics worth their salt and history will show dylan as the greatest song writer and the father of modern rock n roll. you can like the stones more than dylan but that is just your taste. even the stones will tell you that they must carry his amp to his show not the other way around. the stones themselves will bow their knee to dylans genius, so why cant you?

Masterpiece....my favorite song all the time
Great version and quality. I think this was when Bono was the best vocally and also still had that haunting stare to him.
Every time i listen to this song, i get chills up my spine.
