You heard genius
What a great quote 👏
This song particularly does that to a lot of people
Me too...
Standing center stage at Wembley on the 13th July 1985, witnessing the most stunning performance of my life, I’m now 55 and feel so blessed to be able to say “I was there”
That's awesome, Robin! It had to have been an amazing experience. 😊
Did U2 play after Queen? Alot of people seem to forget that U2 were way bigger than Queen in the 80's.
EC U2 were on around 16:00 Queen didn’t play their set until around 19:00, in 1985 U2 were only just getting know, it was just after The Unforgettable Fire Album, Queen were massive, way bigger than U2!
@@4472robin Of course U2's album "The Joshua Tree" came two years later and that took them to another stratosphere. 😊
So was I! Yes it was incredible. I saw a documentary on it last week and I had a bit of a lump in my throat.
my brother died today. U2 was his lifelong favorite band. His dog's name is Bono. I'm in tears as I write this. Roger battled demons and was one of The Beautiful Souls on this rock we live on. I can't think of a better song to play in tribute. Go easy, my brother. I love you, man.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Stay strong.
❤️
thank you nasd and Bart Raats. very appreciated.
Prayers for you and your family. May your brother rest in peace.
@@zoewang8797 thank you ZW. I appreciate the kind words.
Here I am 73 years old...I remember this incredible event as if it were yesterday. On that hot and humid July day in 1985, I was three stories up on a ladder painting my upstate New York house while Live Aid poured through speakers in a nearby window. When U2 came on, I literally "froze" on that tall ladder in awe of what I was hearing. God Bless the 1980's...🤗🤗👍👍
I’m 60 now. I remember this day well too. Phil Collins playing in both England and Philadelphia. What a nut.😂. this was an incredible performance on an incredible day. ✌🏼
It was the greatest decade in American history. ... All of which is lost by today's standards.
Yes. And don’t forget Queen’s iconic performance

I'm 61 years old and watching this still gives me chills. U2 is, and always will be my favorite band of all times!
Same, I am 56. The 80s were fantastic.
I could not agree more..
Who was that chick" ,,??++)
Frisson ❤
I saw them in 83 at the US festival-been a fan evr since…. Fabulous band
That, right there, was a fucking ROCK & ROLL BAND! No autotune, no time correction, no pro tools. Just real people playing from their hearts.
Brother were they tight on that day or what? Incredible performance. 4 bad assed Rockers to be sure well said my friend!!!
I'm a fan of U2. Seen them live twice. However, they are huge users of sound technology on stage. The Edge can keep playing two notes and that technology makes it sound incredible.
Every note was auto-tuned via the Internet and the cloud, etc. Yep.
@@NealR2000, not two notes. Two chords. Six notes in fact.
I’ve seen U2 three times. My favorite was The Joshua Tree tour. They were on fire.
People aren’t overestimating when they say this is one of the greatest live performances in music history. Wow
If they are still there, check out my comments/opinion on this one, long/short, this is when they were genuinely never in doubt, in the uk we've listened to the other opinion of queen and their performance of which they were veterans in that stage by then but U2 absolutely owned Wembley stadium that day, i was 12 years old and vividly remember it, they more than arrived at the top table that day , 2 years later the Joshua tree! I needn't go on.
Your right.
IMO the greatest live gathering of musicians and personal performances of all time.
Absolutely.
These were peak years for u2. Brian May have got the Mercury rising for some in the crowd but I still say Bono had the 'Edge' that day in 1985
Im not sure if there was a best act at Live Aid, but the singing and performance of this band on that Saturday in July 1985 was up there at the top ! Bonos singing is off the scale, the feeling he got in to his singing is amazing
This song helps keep me centered. I struggled with alcohol addiction for almost fifteen years. AA, and deep family care, carried me in the right direction. This tune reminded me about hope, opportunity....and strength.
Keep drinkingfont let those aeeholes control your life
I waited all afternoon to see U2 perform at Live Aid, I was 14 years old. I'm just a black girl from Indiana and this performance had me sobbing. U2 music has touched me deep into my spiral soul. Thank you for almost 40 years of transcending music and love. Happy Birthday Bono.
This really hit me in the feels, thank you for sharing.

Reading this and listening to energy in the performance has got my vibration up and I'm sitting here covered in goosebumps. Love from London England 🏴

I was 13 and sitting on the floor in front of the TV all day watching. I'm 50 now and nothing has even come close since. U2 and Queen knocked it out of the park that afternoon!!!

True words.
Hello? Anyone still here in 2024 watching this incredible performance almost 40 years later?? 😍
Yes of course i am 76 years old and still listening U2 and the best Bad performance 🤩
Here i am❤
Right here
Hi!
I was 15 when this happened. In Glasgow, never forget this
U2 went to another level after that performance and never looked back. My favorite live song ever and I'm 51 today.
IMO…they redefined their music, likeness, image just a few years later and I was a fan No More
happy bday
They did not go to another level with this perfotmance....they took off and went into orbit...this is 1 of the very few songs that i have heard that genuinly sounds better live than in a recording studio
53 & I agree. I watched this live with my Nan.
Exit by them 2 years later at Elland Road Leeds beat this for me .
Bono was only 25 years old. The confidence and swagger were off the charts. Amazing band!
When men had the essence of, strong masculinity, and that essence is a very good look! ❣️
I agree mostly but just like ‘feminity’, the concept of masculinity is hard to keep up with and changes within different times and cultures. Bono is showing his heart, tenderness and sensitivity here. Long hair, normal unsculpted body, not an ounce of aggression or arrogance here. It looks like beautiful strong masculinity to me but men are often conditioned or expected to express masculinity in more aggressive ways. In the same way that what is fashionably ‘feminine’ (mostly anything artificial and consumerist) is not what I see as admirably feminine.

That mic stage tech deserves a gold medal. Dude was lightening fast!
RIP to him.
Unsung hero
Absolutely. He was so totally present every second for Bono. Awesome job!! Note how he was watching Bono's feet all of the time...pre-empting where he'd go next and make sure the microphone was there.
Greg Carroll. Poor guy died the following year. U2 wrote a song for him called One Tree Hill.
Indeed!!
I'm still listening in Oct 2024. Arguably their best song. Still have it on my old VHS. What a song....
Pride in the name of love and this song are what we kept me the odd duck at parties. This music is in my heart.
Me too!
I agree
So... it's Feb 23, 2023, I just watched this again it's on a fave list of mine. I'm gonna be 63 next month and I watched this live when it happened. I still have tears and must "watch" when I listen. Bono thought he did a poor performance when interviewed, in actuality it was the most moving, I believe... God bless these beautiful memories...
I’m 63 also I love U2 what an awesome performance of them singing Bad!!
That roar when he jumps down off the stage gets me every single time I come back to this performance. It's on my watch later continually.
We wrongly were fans of U2 in our teens because they were seen as Rebel or Republican supporters.
Tricolour at Scottish football matches. When he made the statement at Redrock that Sunday Bloody Sunday was not a rebel song it made us respect them all the more. Ireland moving on but that hatred and sectarianism in Scotland is as rife today as it was in the early 80s.
Some people are just retarded.
Still to date my favourite band worldwide. This is their best performance ever
Sixty three this year and SAME ! I always go back to this ❤️
Everyone talks about Queen's performance at Live Aid, but for me, this was the one.
There both Amazing we had geniius truly gifted bands The World will look back and be astonded
Think about this...Queen passing the torch to U2 at this concert.
@@raindrops21_9 same for me
best live performance ever
Queen at Live Aid (espec Radio Ga Ga) was probably the best live performance ever, but U2 was right after them
What made this performance so amazing is the song was relatively unknown at the time but everyone could sense this was one of the most electrifying live performances ever. I guess if you still get chills every time you watch this it’s all good
I watched the performance as it was telecast. I knew of them at a superficial level from what played on the radio at the time. To say that I wasn't changed at the conclusion of the performance would be a lie. Got me my cassette of "The Unforgettable Fire" and haven't looked back since.
Almost 40 years later I watch this, and still...chills.
I'm not a huge U2 fan, but I respect the talent. This is a pretty epic performance, and quite monumental in terms of rock music history. Very emotional.
People talk about Queen at Live Aid but this performance is right up there with them
Both magnificent, the 7-8 min mark this 54yr old Australian randomly burst into tears in a good way…. the charisma, the emotion.
this was better, even david bowie was better then queen.
At that time, the queen was a league above
Don't think u wouldn't get much argument there not a huge queen fan but blew everyone away with their performance.

I was 17 years old, sitting watching this late Saturday afternoon, eagerly waiting on Queen coming on. Bono is a GOD.
Yes!
Yes. Yes. Yes. 10000000%.
U2 and Queen were the only performers that day who went onstage to leave something unique people would never forget. Many acts that day performed great sets, but they simply went on, performed, and got offstage. U2 & Queen made the crowd a part of their sets.
Affirnative
This was the moment U2 became a legend.
Afterwards they had a massive bust up, thinking they'd blow it as they didn't do their full set (due to Bono going to the crowd). Complete opposite. Amazing performance.

True. Larger than life
This performance sparked the European leg of Live Aid into life. There's been a lot of revisionism since Freddie's death about who stole the show...trust me, watching at the time, people were asking, "Who are these Irish boys??" U2 brought absolute magic (and no little drama) into a concert that, for all its worthiness and great intentions, was running a little flat. As the night drew in, Elton John and Queen built on U2's ice-breaking, adrenalin-shooting performance, making for a magical night of music.
❤❤❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎸🎸🎶🎶
Exactly
I was 12, didn’t like queen at all, loved U2, but remember both being amazing and since most of the live aid ended up on RUclips decades later glad to see my memory was accurate enough. In retrospect, you see who was tour ready and who just showed up and winged it. Clapton was super sharp. I don’t think much of She’s Waiting but the performance at this concert was fantastic.
My dad stayed awake waiting for Dylan and the Stones, I was 15 at the time and waiting for Bowie and George Michael. After seeing U2 and Queen, I told him the best had already happened.....
Wow. What a statement. I love all those artists.. but I can believe it 😆
QUEEN U2 BOWIE three of the all time greatest performances there and at one venue and all on the same day
A lot of the more established artists really bombed that day; Dylan and McCartney. Led Zeppelin was a train wreck.
I'm here just now . 25/12 2020. I love all of there.
You were there when this happened
Queen's performance was considered the best during Live Aid, yet I gotta say U2's performance is right there. I remember being a 14 year old boy (2 months shy of 15) in the USA, being mesmerized with this show by U2. Also, there was a sense that we cared about the world and the people living on this planet. Amazing this was almost 40 years ago......

I was 17 as well. When rock and roll was alive.
So so true, the 80s will never be replaced as it was such a special time for all of us who were fortunate to live through those special times ❤

MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!
All the Best!

That is an AWESOME memory to have! I love hearing about folks' concert experiences like this that leave a lasting impression.
This version of “BAD” is one of the best ever !!! For an excellent cause too !!!!
THIS IS THE BEST
I agree 100
There's a moment, after Bono goes into the crowd, when he pulls himself back up on the main stage, and gestures for a microphone...There's a guy who finds a working vocal mic, throws it to him, and slides unobtrusively off stage left...If you've ever played live with a band, or been a roadie, or done community theatre, this guy is your hero...Dude, that was badass...You are every bit a part of this historic moment as anybody else...
That was Greg Carroll. He sadly died the following year in an RTA. The Joshua Tree album was dedicated to him.
Agree totally. I was a roadie/audio engineer in the early 90’s. he is a hero. I was lucky enough to work for some of the top bands of the day, and crossed paths with U2 in Sydney back then. Good times that era. Wow.
@@petergreen2552 Wow that is great info. Thx. Dusty the 2nd.
@@avbhayes Yes it was a great era/decade for me. Yes you are lucky to have worked with such great bands like U2. The 80's were really great for me.
Yes he was brilliant Jonathan.. Bono's PA on BAD at Live Aid, Greg Carroll, was tragically killed 12 months after Live Aid performance . Greg Carroll, a New Zealand Maori whom Bono and the band met while on tour in NZ. Bono asked him to join the Band on their world tour. Greg eventually he became Bono's personal assistant. That was him on Live Aid, it was magic watching him effortlessly following Bono, knowing where and when he needed him.
Greg was riding Bono's Harley back to Bono's house in Dublin on a wet rainy night when a car drove out in front of him.
Bono had flown to Texas to sing with Willie Nelson that day, but when he heard the news he flew back to Ireland immediately.
Bono, Ali, and other members of the U2 organisation then flew with Carroll’s body to New Zealand, met his family and attended his funeral. Bono sang “Let it Be” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” in tribute to his late friend. Bono wrote “One Tree Hill.” in memory of Greg. One Tree Hill is a place in NZ that Greg took the band to when he met them first. So Gregs death inspired 'One Tree Hill' R.I.P Greg.. you helped make U2's Live Aid performance special.

For about 11 minutes one afternoon in 1985, I still believed that the power of music could change the world...
Saturday July 13, !985 I was nineteen. I spent the entire day and night in front of the tv watching live aid. In the days leading up I heard rumours of who would play. Some said The Beatles, some said Led Zepplin, still others said Black Sabbath. The bands that did play were amazing. A week after this my older sister gave birth to her second son. He now has a six year old. And me? Still kicking around at 54. I keep healthy by walking five miles (8 kilometers) a day and I still STILL listen to rock. Hehehe.

i saw this on television during the American broadcast. I had just gotten The Unforgettable Fire for my birthday in 1985 and was completely in love with U2. 36 years later, this is still my favorite song by them and they have been my favorite group ever since. i know everyone likes to say that Queen's performance was the definitive performance of LIVE AID but I would have to give that nod to U2. Maria, I totally agree with you. I was 20 when this amazing day took place! Yes, for me as well, U2 totally stole the event and this is my favourite U2 track too! LiveAid was the making of U2 on an international level and they just never looked back. I remember I was going on a date and being taken out to dinner so I was video recording this and the evening acts. I was getting when U2 played and was dancing around the bedroom putting my makeup on! I've just noticed the stage clock and it shows 6.30pm...not bad for a 35 year old memory!
It's a toss of the coin for sure, I cannot split depends on mode

I'm still crying watching this stonishing performance. If I had a time travel machine I'd be back that day in there.
Hi Maria, totally agree unreservedly. I remember watching this live on tv at home just before leaving to catch the bus to meet my future wife. We had been courting for a few months and I remember watching my watch nervously as I was tore between running to the bus and watching this epic performance. I left in time and made it to meet my wife! I think on reflection it is still one of the best days of my life as it was my Mum’s birthdays too. We were immensely proud Irish people and although Mum’s gone I still am now! What a brilliant day.
Here in May 2024.
Still brings a tear to the eye and makes my hairs stand on end watching this 39yrs on. I was one of the lucky ones to be there, often looked for our group in the crowd near the front, never managed to spot us. What a day.

“We were supposed to play three songs, ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘Bad’ and ‘Pride’, which was our hit. But then Bono went missing,” recalls Adam, in U2 by U2. “In the middle of Bad,” remembers Larry, “he want on a wander trying to pick out some girls to dance with. It felt like he was gone forever. We were quite jittery as it was, and when Bono went missing, a certain panic ensued.”
“I was totally thrown,” remembers Edge. “And I’m looking at Adam and Larry to see if they know what’s going on and they’re looking back at me with panic on their faces. Next thing I spot him way down below clambering over the last of the barriers to get to the people..."

This song always makes me cry, just like many others have said. I don't completely know why, U2, at such a young age knew what longing, hurting, hoping for better someday but knowing it would be such a long, long journey to find that better world. While praying the Promises are real and knowing that's the only thing in this world that will heal all the pain and suffering we inflicted on each other. Words fail when trying to describe how this song touches so many of us. One of the greatest songs and performance of all time, I honestly think Angels stopped to watch and listen.....and understood.
Amen, I’m 💯% with you my friend, just came upon again a few months ago!!😊
I live all the songs the U2 even if the are sad and make me crying because even today continue Wars in many Countries. We no want any more Wars. We want Peace and love each others no matter what religion Culture o❤❤ race o color we are all humans.
We need love no Wars.😢😢❤❤
Bono's Roadie on BAD at Live Aid, Greg Carroll, was tragically killed 12 months after Live Aid performance. He died on July 3, 1986.
Footnote on BAD and the amazing roadie that follows Bono around on stage: His name was Greg Carroll, a New Zealand Maori whom Bono and the band met while on tour in NZ. Bono was really impressed with Greg and asked him to join the band on their world tour. Greg eventually became Bono's personal assistant. That was him on Live Aid, it was magic watching him effortlessly following Bono, knowing where and when he needed him.
A year after Live Aid, Greg died in a motorbike accident on July 3, 1986. He was riding Bono's Harley back to Bono's house on a rainy night inn Dublin when a car drove out in front of him. Bono had flown to Texas to sing with Willie Nelson that day, but when he heard the news he flew back to Ireland immediately.
Bono, Ali, and other members of the U2 crew flew with Greg's body to New Zealand, met his family and attended his funeral. Bono sang “Let it Be” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” in tribute to his late friend. Bono wrote “One Tree Hill.” in memory of Greg. One Tree Hill is a place in NZ that Greg took the band to when he met them first. So Greg's death inspired 'One Tree Hill' .... R.I.P Greg.. you helped make U2's Live Aid performance special.
There is a more in-depth story on One Tree Hill and its meaning. Greg has been immortalised by U2.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Tree_Hill_(song)
Thanks for this footnote
Wow what a sad story. But I loved it. Thx for sharing it.

Well, be fair: It’s a White crowd; and it’s not a rap concert.
Die daemlichen Moslems würden nicht begreifen wie so was sein kann. ....
Because it's 99.9% white.
and no phone!
That was amazingly beautiful to witness: the message, the unity, the music, the way Bono was so focused on the audience and went down to the crowd to get to this fan for such a moving, powerful and sincere embrace. That moment moved me to tears. Just look at how the world becomes one for humanity and brotherhood behind such powerful music. This is the power of one love.
Why can’t we do this today? I’m wide awake.

What I love and respect about U2 is the Irish boys stuck together still jamming to U2 for 30 plus years. Thank you you wonderful Irishmen.
They actually have been together (altho not recording) since 1976. That means as of writing, almost a full half century.
There wasn’t one note missed in 13 minutes of this masterpiece

Crikey, I'm now a pensioner and this still brings a tear to my eye!
you're lovely.
Hope you had a good life!
i will never understand people who hate on u2. you simply cannot deny the sheer energy of their live performances, or the immense passion on display in their songs. i've seen them live a handful of times now, and there is simply nothing on earth like a u2 show- it leaves you feeling high and reeling in the afterglow for days after. the energy is absolutely palpable. people who hate on u2 do it because it might be viewed as the "cool" thing to do in certain singles, but i highly doubt they've ever actually given their stuff a listen. their music transcends. there are only a handful of singers who are always as on-point live as they are in the studio, and bono imo leads the very small pack (consisting of himself, fred mercury, and chris cornell). the whole band is just the rare perfect marriage of four members, completely in tune with one another, operating on the same frequency. the edge's guitar parts take me to another plane of existence, man... they are just perfect, and entirely unique. and the rhythm section of larry and adam could bring dinosaurs back to life, i swear. god, what a band... we are blessed to have them.
We hate on U2 because they are pompous libtards who are hypocrites. They are all worth hundreds of millions but do you see them donate millions of their personal wealth to anything? No you don't. They are phony liars who claim to care about the poor but they do nothing but enrich themselves. Bono is the biggest clown of the bunch. Since when does being a good rock singer mean you can lecture people on geo-politics? This moron did not even graduate from university and somehow he thinks he can lecture governments and citizens on how our tax money should be spent. Meanwhile, Mr Phony puts his money in tax shelters. The guy will burn in hell for his lies
I've seen them several times too and I am a fan, the only live show that betters them is Springsteen, for energy and value for money.
Nice mention of Freddie and Chris, may they both rest in peace, two incredible voices.
Bono will always divide opinion with regards to why some people don't like them or him but that is non music issues, musically alone they are fantastic.
Tim Johnson he does make some good music though
@@etheneinspenner3950 You mean he used to make great music in the 80s and 90s. That last 3 albums have been garbage. We are all here watching them from 30 years ago because they suck now

Controversially the best band in the world. U2, especially The Edge, created such an atmosphere that spoke to the soul with his innovative guitar riffs. Forever grateful for U2's life-changing music and performances that brought everyone together in peace and as one.

Nobody rocked a more epic mullet than Bono did in 1985. Such a great song that makes so nostalgic for a time in my life that has long since passed.
I’m sorry, this was a great performance, but that mullet is god-awful; looks like a dead wolverine on top of his noggin.
Sadly... most of us don't realize or recognize the special moments until long after they've passed and all we can do is pine for those feelings and experiences lost forever to time....

I saw this live on MTV, and I think this performance of "Bad" was by far the greatest live performance I have ever seen. Every member of U2 and that huge crowd at Wembley Stadium were absolutely brilliant. This was not one of their better known songs at the time, and it was so different from the album version. And I think this song captured the spirit of that incredible day, "wide awake, I'm not sleeping." And thanks to MTV for not loading up their broadcast with commercials and talk during the performances like the US network TV broadcast.
The unforgettable fire had been released 9 months earlier (I still consider it U2’s best album ). I agree with you that Bad wasn’t well known even though this performance and in future tours it got a run out . Funnily enough when I was at uni mid 90s my gf at the time used to get wound up that her best mate ( massive u2 fan ) and I considered Bad their best song and she hadn’t even heard of it
I saw it also live ... amazing experience ... and follow U2 since June 1981 Pink Pop Festival 50,000 people Geleen (my home town) The Netherlands 🇳🇱

@@Cruzy1892 between the Queen movie and RUclips’s promoting Queen at Live Aid, one would think that it was Queens show. But remember, Queen were an aged band in their second or third coming in 1985. I'm with you friend. I remember eagerly waiting for it and all the talk about who was and wasn't playing, some were saying not very nice things about those who didn't play like Michael Jackson ,Bruce Springsteen ,I don't know if Rod Stewart played. or Elton John. Sprinsteen was on his honeymoon and donated something and he and M.Jackson did the single USA for Africa.
I loved when Phil Collins played London then got the Concorde to Philly ,it was a great idea. Plus the likes of Led Zeppelin ,Jimmy Page look totally smashed but he was awesome on the guitar ,Eric Clapton and Phil Collins also played with Led Zeppelin ,and Keith Richards and Ronnie Woods played with Bob Dylan .I think it was Ron Wood. It's mad when all the 60's acts played ,my mates and i were 19 and we all thought Macca and the Stones Dylan were old lol . But the reality song that ht was the Cars Drive and the Video ,100.000 just went silent some wept i shed a tear ,Billy Connelly was crying , it just was This is what it's about. And the Who were broken up but got together for that day, It was the early stages of Glasnost and even Gorby let the Russians watch ,it was the greatest rock/pop show ever.
