my brother died today. U2 was his lifelong favorite band. His dog's name is Bono. I'm in tears as I write this. Roger battled demons and was one of The Beautiful Souls on this rock we live on. I can't think of a better song to play in tribute. Go easy, my brother. I love you, man.
I'm a fan of U2. Seen them live twice. However, they are huge users of sound technology on stage. The Edge can keep playing two notes and that technology makes it sound incredible.
Standing center stage at Wembley on the 13th July 1985, witnessing the most stunning performance of my life, I’m now 55 and feel so blessed to be able to say “I was there”

Watching this makes me wonder why people have to grow old. Bono was young in this, and so too was Howard Jones. And also Holly Johnson, who wasn't at Live Aid. When U2 came on, I literally "froze" on that tall ladder in awe of what I was hearing. God Bless the 1980's...🤗🤗👍👍
I’m 60 now. I remember this day well too. Phil Collins playing in both England and Philadelphia. What a nut.😂. this was an incredible performance on an incredible day. ✌🏼
If they are still there, check out my comments/opinion on this one, long/short, this is when they were genuinely never in doubt, in the uk we've listened to the other opinion of queen and their performance of which they were veterans in that stage by then but U2 absolutely owned Wembley stadium that day, i was 12 years old and vividly remember it, they more than arrived at the top table that day , 2 years later the Joshua tree! I needn't go on.
These were peak years for u2. Brian May have got the Mercury rising for some in the crowd but I still say Bono had the 'Edge' that day in 1985 Im not sure if there was a best act at Live Aid, but the singing and performance of this band on that Saturday in July 1985 was up there at the top ! Bonos singing is off the scale, the feeling he got in to his singing is amazing

I waited all afternoon to see U2 perform at Live Aid, I was 14 years old. I'm just a black girl from Indiana and this performance had me sobbing. U2 music has touched me deep into my spiral soul. Thank you for almost 40 years of transcending music and love. Happy Birthday Bono.
Reading this and listening to energy in the performance has got my vibration up and I'm sitting here covered in goosebumps. Love from London England 🏴
This song helps keep me centered. I struggled with alcohol addiction for almost fifteen years. AA, and deep family care, carried me in the right direction. This tune reminded me about hope, opportunity....and strength.
I agree mostly but just like ‘feminity’, the concept of masculinity is hard to keep up with and changes within different times and cultures. Bono is showing his heart, tenderness and sensitivity here. Long hair, normal unsculpted body, not an ounce of aggression or arrogance here. It looks like beautiful strong masculinity to me but men are often conditioned or expected to express masculinity in more aggressive ways. In the same way that what is fashionably ‘feminine’ (mostly anything artificial and consumerist) is not what I see as admirably feminine.
U2 and Queen were the only performers that day who went onstage to leave something unique people would never forget. Many acts that day performed great sets, but they simply went on, performed, and got offstage. U2 & Queen made the crowd a part of their sets.
Queen's performance was considered the best during Live Aid, yet I gotta say U2's performance is right there. I remember being a 14 year old boy (2 months shy of 15) in the USA, being mesmerized with this show by U2. Also, there was a sense that we cared about the world and the people living on this planet. Amazing this was almost 40 years ago......
Afterwards they had a massive bust up, thinking they'd blow it as they didn't do their full set (due to Bono going to the crowd). Complete opposite. Amazing performance.
Absolutely. He was so totally present every second for Bono. Awesome job!! Note how he was watching Bono's feet all of the time...pre-empting where he'd go next and make sure the microphone was there.
I'm an Italian guy, 38 years old, here with the corona virus the situation is so bad.......and in these days this song give me so much hope.....what we live for? what is really important at the end?....perhaps love......love for your family , love for your girl ....love for life and all things around us........

I'm right behind you (16 now 56) and right with you! These guys did something with music that I never experienced with any other band, composer, or musician of any kind. But I have never been able to explain it. It was like being taken to another level - but that's not it. I wish I could explain it. I really do...
It's crazy I was not even born when this happened but lately I'm really starting to feel old. That so many amazing artists. Appeared in one concert, this could not happen today. Sad time is flying.
I was 13 and sitting on the floor in front of the TV all day watching. I'm 50 now and nothing has even come close since. U2 and Queen knocked it out of the park that afternoon!!!
They did not go to another level with this perfotmance....they took off and went into orbit...this is 1 of the very few songs that i have heard that genuinly sounds better live than in a recording studio
Когда мне было 15 лет,и существовала такая страна как СССР,я слушала по радио БиБиСи группу U2.С тех пор они стали моими любимцами.Потрясающе талантливые ирландцы!❤🌟🌹
8:21 Adam “We were supposed to play three songs, ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘Bad’ and ‘Pride’, which was our hit. But then Bono went missing,” recalls Adam, in U2 by U2. “In the middle of Bad,” remembers Larry, “he want on a wander trying to pick out some girls to dance with. It felt like he was gone forever. We were quite jittery as it was, and when Bono went missing, a certain panic ensued.” “I was totally thrown,” remembers Edge. “And I’m looking at Adam and Larry to see if they know what’s going on and they’re looking back at me with panic on their faces. Next thing I spot him way down below clambering over the last of the barriers to get to the people..."

So... it's Feb 23, 2023, I just watched this again it's on a fave list of mine. I'm gonna be 63 next month and I watched this live when it happened. I still have tears and must "watch" when I listen. Bono thought he did a poor performance when interviewed, in actuality it was the most moving, I believe... God bless these beautiful memories...
That roar when he jumps down off the stage gets me every single time I come back to this performance. It's on my watch later continually. We wrongly were fans of U2 in our teens because they were seen as Rebel or Republican supporters. Tricolour at Scottish football matches. When he made the statement at Redrock that Sunday Bloody Sunday was not a rebel song it made us respect them all the more. Ireland moving on but that hatred and sectarianism in Scotland is as rife today as it was in the early 80s. Some people are just retarded. Still to date my favourite band worldwide. This is their best performance ever
Bono has my heart. When he called those young ladies to the front; i thought it was the best damn thing. Truly an epic concert & gesture & I wish Id been there to see it. Cheers & Peace out.
My dad stayed awake waiting for Dylan and the Stones, I was 15 at the time and waiting for Bowie and George Michael. After seeing U2 and Queen, I told him the best had already happened.....
What made this performance so amazing is the song was relatively unknown at the time but everyone could sense this was one of the most electrifying live performances ever. I guess if you still get chills every time you watch this it’s all good
I watched the performance as it was telecast. I knew of them at a superficial level from what played on the radio at the time. To say that I wasn't changed at the conclusion of the performance would be a lie. Got me my cassette of "The Unforgettable Fire" and haven't looked back since. Almost 40 years later I watch this, and still...chills.
I'm not a huge U2 fan, but I respect the talent. This is a pretty epic performance, and quite monumental in terms of rock music history. Very emotional.
working classes hero..you are much more than music..you inspire people..well done guys.. keep doing what you are doing..how you took the people on Liveaid what you did is believable.. I was there standing around 20 yards from you...
Not really cold war, constant threat of nuclear or terrorist attack, social injustice and unrest, environmental catastrophe - nothing different there, then 🙄 U2 lifted us up ✌️
This performance sparked the European leg of Live Aid into life. There's been a lot of revisionism since Freddie's death about who stole the show...trust me, watching at the time, people were asking, "Who are these Irish boys??" U2 brought absolute magic (and no little drama) into a concert that, for all its worthiness and great intentions, was running a little flat. As the night drew in, Elton John and Queen built on U2's ice-breaking, adrenalin-shooting performance, making for a magical night of music.
I was 12, didn’t like queen at all, loved U2, but remember both being amazing and since most of the live aid ended up on RUclips decades later glad to see my memory was accurate enough. In retrospect, you see who was tour ready and who just showed up and winged it. Clapton was super sharp. I don’t think much of She’s Waiting but the performance at this concert was fantastic.
U2 were big with their own fanbase at this time but this performance made them in my opinion!... I watched it live as a U 2 fan and felt that they had arrived on the Global scene. At the end of the day they are still around... today. Cheers
I was 15 when I first saw this…I’m 54 now and still get goosebumps watching this awesome performance from U2..The height of music 1985 (it reached the mountain peak over any decade in my opinion)and live aid and the height & pinnacle performance of U2's career with Bad at live aid...the passion and sound just soooo amazing and the hairs still stand up on my neck every time it watch even now here in 2024!!! (I watch it at least 10 times a year) 👏😁 (5:54 Greg Carroll who sadly died a year later but remembered by U2 on the Joshua Tree Album which was dedicated to him)
Bono's Roadie on BAD at Live Aid, Greg Carroll, was tragically killed 12 months after Live Aid performance. He died on July 3, 1986. Footnote on BAD and the amazing roadie that follows Bono around on stage: His name was Greg Carroll, a New Zealand Maori whom Bono and the band met while on tour in NZ. Bono was really impressed with Greg and asked him to join the band on their world tour. Greg eventually became Bono's personal assistant. That was him on Live Aid, it was magic watching him effortlessly following Bono, knowing where and when he needed him. A year after Live Aid, Greg died in a motorbike accident on July 3, 1986. He was riding Bono's Harley back to Bono's house on a rainy night inn Dublin when a car drove out in front of him. Bono had flown to Texas to sing with Willie Nelson that day, but when he heard the news he flew back to Ireland immediately. Bono, Ali, and other members of the U2 crew flew with Greg's body to New Zealand, met his family and attended his funeral. Bono sang “Let it Be” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” in tribute to his late friend. Bono wrote “One Tree Hill.” in memory of Greg. One Tree Hill is a place in NZ that Greg took the band to when he met them first. So Greg's death inspired 'One Tree Hill' .... R.I.P Greg.. you helped make U2's Live Aid performance special. There is a more in-depth story on One Tree Hill and its meaning. Greg has been immortalised by U2.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Tree_Hill_(song)
So many have gone before us. I wonder if they do steady our hands? This song was about some one he knew was on the edge of oblivion despairing what was the point of continuing....

Controversially the best band in the world. U2, especially The Edge, created such an atmosphere that spoke to the soul with his innovative guitar riffs. Forever grateful for U2's life-changing music and performances that brought everyone together in peace and as one.
Duuuude, I don’t normally comment on stuff but man this performance touched my soul, the raw sounds of those guitars are heavenly along with Bono’s voice, U2 truly was ahead of their time, they deliver every time
I was 17 years old in 1985…watching this and remembering how great the 80s were…makes me wish I was 17 again. The world was better back then and so was the music.
U2 is the Best BAND EVER!! I love how Bono goes into the crowd and dances with a young woman and then hugs the two others that were on the stage. I bet those three young women will remember this for the rest of their lives.
That first woman he hugged and danced with almost actually died due to the mosh pit thing; Bono LITERALLY saved her from being crushed. So out of all of the acts, U2's was the greatest
MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

Saturday July 13, !985 I was nineteen. I spent the entire day and night in front of the tv watching live aid. In the days leading up I heard rumours of who would play. Some said The Beatles, some said Led Zepplin, still others said Black Sabbath. The bands that did play were amazing. A week after this my older sister gave birth to her second son. He now has a six year old. And me? Still kicking around at 54. I keep healthy by walking five miles (8 kilometers) a day and I still STILL listen to rock. Hehehe.
It still can! Don't let those murderous heart stealing bastards think they can take yours! No one can take from you what you do not freely give, peace & love!
Sadly... most of us don't realize or recognize the special moments until long after they've passed and all we can do is pine for those feelings and experiences lost forever to time....
One of the best live performances ever by a legendary band. I was 11 yrs old when I saw this on TV, and that's the moment U2 became my band... and still are!
Goo god, man, you are loyal. Their output over the last 30 years has been, to put it mildly, disappointing. But this performance is the absolute pinnacle of excellence
There's a moment, after Bono goes into the crowd, when he pulls himself back up on the main stage, and gestures for a microphone...There's a guy who finds a working vocal mic, throws it to him, and slides unobtrusively off stage left...If you've ever played live with a band, or been a roadie, or done community theatre, this guy is your hero...Dude, that was badass...You are every bit a part of this historic moment as anybody else...
Agree totally. I was a roadie/audio engineer in the early 90’s. he is a hero. I was lucky enough to work for some of the top bands of the day, and crossed paths with U2 in Sydney back then. Good times that era. Wow.
Yes he was brilliant Jonathan.. Bono's PA on BAD at Live Aid, Greg Carroll, was tragically killed 12 months after Live Aid performance . Greg Carroll, a New Zealand Maori whom Bono and the band met while on tour in NZ. Bono asked him to join the Band on their world tour. Greg eventually he became Bono's personal assistant. Ive seen the interview with two of them and they weren't too keen on it. To them it was a sweaty man with stubble that hurt their skin and he was too sweaty for them to enjoy it they said..
Imagine being at this... Freddie, Bono, Bowie, Phil Collins, Elton John, McCartney, etc. What a time to be alive. I was born a year after this. It drives me a little crazy that Freddie is gone and I will never get to see him live. Im glad these old Live Aid videos exist because I think U2 and Queen specifically were on another level for that venue. History was being made.
It was awesome......it was really hot day in UK....we had the patio doors open and we watched it all afternoon at my mum n dad's house.....then late afternoon we all went swimming at the beach....it was an awesome day....and it was also of course all for charity.....amazing!!!
I was 11 years old and all of our family was at my Aunt’s house watching it, and remember everyone talking about being blown away by a guy with a moustache and a white vest!!
Honey, I'm 77, and I met Freddy at a show in Houston TX, he was wonderful and sweet. And I saw U2 at a small club in Austin TX called Club Foot. (Haha, could never be called that today. We had a sense of humor then.) This was prior to their big hits, but you KNEW. BTW... the Edge ruled the band.
I was 15 years old. I loved bands like Wham, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Simple Minds... then I saw these guys... Bono was different. He looked at the crowd... he sang to the stadium... He danced with a girl... I've never heard such a voice... I've never seen such passion... After that... I started a band. Thank you Bono. Thank you U2
@@mcfcguvnors There was an article written about the 2 girls that climbed up on stage They made a comment about how surprised they were at how sweaty he was, but haven't seen anything about the dark haired girl who came up and danced with him
I'm with you friend. I remember eagerly waiting for it and all the talk about who was and wasn't playing, some were saying not very nice things about those who didn't play like Michael Jackson ,Bruce Springsteen ,I don't know if Rod Stewart played. or Elton John. Sprinsteen was on his honeymoon and donated something and he and M.Jackson did the single USA for Africa. I loved when Phil Collins played London then got the Concorde to Philly ,it was a great idea. Plus the likes of Led Zeppelin ,Jimmy Page look totally smashed but he was awesome on the guitar ,Eric Clapton and Phil Collins also played with Led Zeppelin ,and Keith Richards and Ronnie Woods played with Bob Dylan .I think it was Ron Wood. It's mad when all the 60's acts played ,my mates and i were 19 and we all thought Macca and the Stones Dylan were old lol . But the reality song that ht was the Cars Drive and the Video ,100.000 just went silent some wept i shed a tear ,Billy Connelly was crying , it just was This is what it's about. And the Who were broken up but got together for that day, It was the early stages of Glasnost and even Gorby let the Russians watch ,it was the greatest rock/pop show ever.

This really hit me in the feels, thank you for sharing.

This song helps keep me centered. I struggled with alcohol addiction for almost fifteen years. AA, and deep family care, carried me in the right direction. This tune reminded me about hope, opportunity....and strength.

Bono was only 25 years old. The confidence and swagger were off the charts. Amazing band!
When men had the essence of, strong masculinity, and that essence is a very good look! ❣️

This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest concert moments in history.
I was 17 years old, sitting watching this late Saturday afternoon, eagerly waiting on Queen coming on. Bono is a GOD.
Yes!
Yes. Yes. Yes. 10000000%.
U2 and Queen were the only performers that day who went onstage to leave something unique people would never forget. Many acts that day performed great sets, but they simply went on, performed, and got offstage. U2 & Queen made the crowd a part of their sets.
Affirnative
Queen's performance was considered the best during Live Aid, yet I gotta say U2's performance is right there. I remember being a 14 year old boy (2 months shy of 15) in the USA, being mesmerized with this show by U2. Also, there was a sense that we cared about the world and the people living on this planet. Amazing this was almost 40 years ago......
Não me lembro de nada disso tenho 49 anos mas esse show me.emociona dimais ,N fico em nenhum final de semana sem ver
This was the moment U2 became a legend.
Afterwards they had a massive bust up, thinking they'd blow it as they didn't do their full set (due to Bono going to the crowd). Complete opposite. Amazing performance.

But then Bono went missing,” recalls Adam, in U2 by U2. “In the middle of Bad,” remembers Larry, “he want on a wander trying to pick out some girls to dance with. It felt like he was gone forever. We were quite jittery as it was, and when Bono went missing, a certain panic ensued.”
“I was totally thrown,” remembers Edge. “And I’m looking at Adam and Larry to see if they know what’s going on and they’re looking back at me with panic on their faces. Next thing I spot him way down below clambering over the last of the barriers to get to the people..."

Bono thought he did a poor performance when interviewed, in actuality it was the most moving, I believe... God bless these beautiful memories...
I’m 63 also I love U2 what an awesome performance of them singing Bad!!

❤❤❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎸🎸🎶🎶
Exactly
I was 12, didn’t like queen at all, loved U2, but remember both being amazing and since most of the live aid ended up on RUclips decades later glad to see my memory was accurate enough. In retrospect, you see who was tour ready and who just showed up and winged it. Clapton was super sharp. I don’t think much of She’s Waiting but the performance at this concert was fantastic.
You can hate on Bono all you want for various reasons, but this is a truly fantastic performance.
Why would any sane person hate on Bono? The person is a legend, like Prince, Elvis, Freddy M etc…

I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987.

For about 11 minutes one afternoon in 1985, I still believed that the power of music could change the world...
Hehehe.

@@marthabromberg6274 So awesome! and yes I agree humor is almost not allowed today haha. What a great memory though.
Thank you U2
never forgot that gorgeous girl he danced with ,often think about her where she is how ife turned out etc
That does make you 🤔
Super
@@mcfcguvnors There was an article written about the 2 girls that climbed up on stage They made a comment about how surprised they were at how sweaty he was, but haven't seen anything about the dark haired girl who came up and danced with him
Simple minds 🔥
I Deicate this song to a young Lady Caitlin who lost her fight at 25 could not break away RIP Caitlin you are among the stars in Paradise now💗
Sail on Silver Girl
The best version of the best song ever written and performed about substance abuse and addiction. My favorite song of all time
He wrote it for his friend who died from an OD of Heroin
If the virus is gonna keep me at home then this is how I choose to spend my time. Unbelievable performance from U2
Totally agree.
Yes, in Brazil too
I'm with you friend.
SAME HERE
seeing it live on TV back in '85 was mind-blowing =^)
I was 37 then.. nearly 76.. now.. WHAT A SCORCHER..IT WAS!!
There is no better version of "Bad" than this one. It's all heart, and filled with awesome human beings. LOVE U2
Anjeli j maniquis. Well said. The girl in the crowd couldn't believe it 😢 wonderful 💚.
Try self aid 1986 & hello from Dublin Ireland
I can't imagine a bad version of Bad
@@rob4146 take a look met life 2017.that version of BAD is fantastic.... & happy new year from Dublin Ireland
I agree. This is the best version of this song!
My younger brother passed a few years ago, we went to see U2 when they toured America in the early 90’s being Irish ☘️ & watching them live was an incredible experience…(he as well as I loved them & the show) we watched this live in 85 & watching this now brings me to tears… love & miss you little brother…RIP Scott Patrick Ruddy 🙏🏻💋😇❤️🇮🇪🇺🇸🍀
So very sorry for you loss!! Glad you and your brother had that experience!
Your brother will always be with you as long as you remember him.
Rest in peace 🙏
I was at Woodstock and still think Live Aid was the greatest rock concert of all time.
Um....I cannot share that point of view.
BOLLOCKS, greetings from Aberdeen Scotland 🏴🏴🏴🏴
80's music was much better than 60's era. Even lyrics-wise this song surpassed anything written in the decades before it.
This was when the world learned about one of the greatest bands of all time - a truly legendary performance.
Bring them back
U2, Chillie Peppers and Cold Play, Slane, 2001 Was up the front First and greatest concert I've ever been to U2 are legends
Amen bernard omg its when they blew on worlds stage
@@richiemolloy8885 holy shit thats some support
This and Coldplay both British great bands.
A performance like this will never be duplicated again! There is NO new band that can grab a stadium by the balls and do this.
Did you miss Queen’s performance??
@Cruzy1892 no "new" band he said.
@@Cruzy1892 between the Queen movie and RUclips’s promoting Queen at Live Aid, one would think that it was Queens show. But remember, Queen were an aged band in their second or third coming in 1985. This band, U2 was fairly new and not completely mainstream yet. This performance kick it in 1985. Make no mistake. In 1985, Live Aid was owed by U2. Might be hard to understand in the 2020s, but the mid 80s was a great time for Rock. And this concert push U2 over the top.
@@markchristopherson9715 and they do say that the best wine come’s out of an old bottle. U2 did put in a great performance and I agree it did propel them further. But the day belonged to Queen.
@@Aaron-ze1io erm what’s your knowledge on music?? Because Queen were a 70’s band.
Here in May 2024.
Still brings a tear to the eye and makes my hairs stand on end watching this 39yrs on. I was one of the lucky ones to be there, often looked for our group in the crowd near the front, never managed to spot us. What a day.
They were so young here but already fully realized. It's an astonishing performance. Moving.
Bono was a sweet 25 years of age here. No wonder the ladies wanted to kiss him.
What I love and respect about U2 is the Irish boys stuck together still jamming to U2 for 30 plus years. Thank you you wonderful Irishmen.
They actually have been together (altho not recording) since 1976. That means as of writing, almost a full half century.
Born in 1980. Listened to U2 in high school. Couldn’t believe I had NEVER heard/saw this version. It’s freaking amazing. Man. No words can describe.
I left school that year ffs 🤦♂Watch the whole of live Aid .Fell in love With U2 listening to Under a Blood Red Sky on Cassette more times than i can remember 🤦♂
Он очень крут. Люблю его!!!!!
Not only a great version, but probably U2 at their peak. One of the greatest live performances by any band, ever. It's up there with the very best...
Haunting, love the sound.
