I was 15 and had forgotten how much U2's music just blew my mind at the time. They were so fresh, so different. Beyond all the hatred they collect today, there's no denying how original they were and how peculiar their sound was. 37 years later I recognize that The Edge was one of the most original and innovative guitarists in rock history, his guitar is so "spacious" so evocative. And Larry Mullen is perhaps one of the most underrated drummers ever, he is a power metronome and his fills are absolutely unique and always in good taste. And I don't remember a performance by these guys where Bono didn't fire all his cartridges and I don't remember a time he missed a note. So, 37 years later It's happen to hear this song again and feel joy and nostalgia.
As a guitarist, when you have all the effects off (particularly the delays) Edge’s lines are incredibly simple. What’s hard is trying to ensure the timing of things while they are on, especially if you’re trying to learn the songs. I’ve almost had to dial in the delays just so I can play, and I’m unsure if I’ve gotten them right.
@@legin3753 I don't think the Live Aid version is better than this one. It's more significant, iconic if you will, because it introduced the world to U2, but sound wise, no way. This is as clean as it gets and Bono's vocals are on another level.
I 1,000% agree. This is their greatest song ever, and this version is so amazing. There's a vastness to it that feels almost ethereal, and all of them are so tight musically at this moment in time. Truly a beautiful piece of music.
This is the version they put on the Wide Awake in America EP. I used to listen to it on repeat over and over driving at night in a ‘78 Chevy 4x4 with a subwoofer behind the seat so I felt every part of that bass line. That was me singing my heart out, howling at the moon , in the wilds of Northern New Mexico at the end of the 90s. It’s always the song I come back to when I’m feeling excited or in need of some motivation. The song is pure power for me.

My favorite version of my favorite U2 song. I remember hearing it in 1996 after my grandmother passed away. Driving west out of Albuquerque singing along to this with tears streaming down my cheeks just staring at that gorgeous landscape. I think of that moment every time I hear this.
I've always felt that this song is a prayer for someone to find an internal peace they have been looking for without much success. Something about the guitar in this song, it seems to need 2 guitarist or maybe they play a loop of recorded guitar, because it seems impossible to hit the notes you hear from one guitar. It's like there is a lead and a rhythm playing also. I've seen multiple videos of this song including Live Aid and Edge licks never match what you hear. Just wonder where is the 2nd guitar?
Please show this to your kids.If they dont get to listen to it then their lives will be the poorer for it.A masterpiece of musicianship. Not One Direction, not 50 Cent, not whatever scatily clad bimbo is flavour of the month. This is important music and will be still listened to in 200 years time-a classic in the real sense
39.. years young this Song is. BAD... Not commercially known a freakin bloody Brilliant tune,, with a Dash of Poetry! "Isolation", "desolation"... "Salvation"
So lucky, I discover this rare gems few years ago, and I think, this version of Bad is the best ever, dramatically, affectively. So sad, there is no video version of this concert.
My favorite song of all time. U2 managed to make it into a bottomless pit of versions so you can always find some new angles to it. Bad is immortal. Bad will be in my heart until the very end.
I've always loved how this was recorded in Birmingham, England but ended up on an EP called "Wide Awake in America". I've said this already in my comments for the recently remastered and rereleased video for 'A Sort of Homecoming', but "Wide Awake in America" is a watermark album which takes me back to a magical time in my youth. And "Bad" was my gateway to discovering U2's catalogue before The Joshua Tree / Rattle and Hum. This version brings me back to that rainy night in November 1987 (merely days away from my 14th birthday), when the Joshua Tree Tour came to BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The lads set that balloon-roofed stadium afire with a pointed version of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', then elevated that fire into the sky with a soaring, endless rendition of 'Bad'. When they didn't play 'Bad' in 2017 when the JT Tour returned to BC Place (the balloon roof replaced by a retractable one 7 years prior) I was not disappointed because I finally got to hear "...Homecoming" live. The irony of which was not lost on me. After the concert I reminisced with my wife about seeing U2 live 30 years prior, as we walked "...Into the night And through the rain Into the half-light And through the flame..." Well...without the rain and flame, to be honest...because it was May...but you all get the gist :-)
This is the best fucking U2 song to me. Every time I hear it, I would fucking tear up... I love all the old U2 stuff from their 1st album "Boy" to "Rattle and Hum".....so emotional, raw, and edgy.
I got to witness an incredible performance of this song in Chicago during the Amnesty International tour, along with Peter Gabriel's Biko. I've seen MANY concerts, and saw many U2 concerts, especially during this period in the band's history. I've seen many of the biggest bands is the world. Prince was an amazing stage presence, but no one, and I mean NO ONE, has a stage presence like Bono. His ability to connect with his audience when he is on stage is incredible. And I'm comparing that to the Stones, Queen, you name it. I once heard someone say seeing U2, especially during this period, was akin to a religious experience, and I couldn't agree more.
Rarely do you see a band do a live version of a song and then replicate it time and time again, but I have seen them do this live twice and watched a ton of live video versions and it is uncanny how well they do it. Fav U2 song by a mile, just perfect in every way.
7:11 GREG CARROLL, the roadie that was killed in 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. They met 2 months before this concert, at the Auckland (NZ) concerts. BONO wrote the lyrics to "ONE TREE HILL" in his memory. Rest in peace.
The Greatest Band of All Time. The minute I first listened to them in the mid 80's in High School they became my favorite band to this day. What's beautiful about this group is that they are still together like the Stones which is a feat rarely accomplished with artists. How many groups can say that they sound the same from studio to live. To hear the audience sing with them from every country in English is amazing. The only other bands that have impressed me in the last 20 years is Foo Fighters and Disturbed. That is what a Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is made up of. It shouldn't be made up of anyone who has picked up a microphone before.
The whelping of highway sections of the Autobahn was a rhythm i was feeling the VERY FIRST TIME i heard this song. It was like 5:30 am...i was driving a vw golf and the volume was maxxed. I was trying to get to the other side of Stuttgart before their rush hour started. The sun was beginning to colour the horizon as i shot a glance to my left...how perfect, i thought and smiled. This tune has a really good driving groove....im not just saying that...and it just caught fire in me...that guitar and the drums and the driving bass....great chemistry...i was on my way to Frankfurt to get a visa for New York. I 'll never forget how perfect this tape was for the drive. To this day...i remember the sound and the feel.😊😊😊
Joshua Tree tour...5:00am trying to get home Toronto to Hamilton. Does anyone remember? Everyone still so in love with the music and each other. It didn't matter. Magic.
Fantastic..... just landed back in 1984 I was a very excited 18 year old we camped out for tickets for our 1st u2gig,loved this video when it was first released I'm back jumping around at the Edinburgh Playhouse 5.11.84 Thanks for the memories 😊
I remember watching edge as a kid wondering how he makes those sounds with his guitar. It didn’t make any sense his hand movements vs. what was coming out. LOL. Then I learned what delay was. It’s still magic.
He amazes us with the sound variations he gets with those foot pedals in front of him on the floor. Bono pegged it early on when someone interviewing them asked about him and his stage moniker. Bono said he was always looking for new stuff/techniques, wanting to gain an "Edge" if you will !!!
This song has touched my soul since 1987 , listen to it at least 1X week … identifier of my troubles , my determination, my passion , my success and failures … song hits hard every time !

War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum, Achtung Baby - All classics in their own right. - quite a run !
Ah memories. I remember the day before this gig, bono asked me to cut his hair. Cant believe he proceeded to go on tele!!
Ah, the pure and clear voice of Bono!
U2's most epic song. Brilliant!
Best song ever written. Saved my life more than once.
Fantastic.
The Edge plays exactly what needs to be played and perfectly.
Edge created a master piece. For those who say he wasn't a great guitarist... tell me what are you doing? It's not immulation, it's creation.
@@captinbeyond Its the loop Edge uses from what he calls "Edge world". Creates delays and loops etc....
@@locksie70 thanks
Yes edge plays exactly what needs to be played and he is based on bono's vocal abilities. High tones and notes, wide range etc.
Me and the wife were there, Dave Hill from Slade was sat in front of us, it was a brilliant night.
Wow!
Brilliant it was i say. Most enjoyable U2
very lucky guy!
You're very very lucky man!
I wish I was alive in the 80s
39.. years young this Song is.
BAD... Not commercially known a freakin bloody Brilliant tune,, with a Dash of Poetry! "Isolation", "desolation"... "Salvation"
Saw them for the first time on this tour. Glasgow Barrowlands on 6th November 1984. Still the best concert I’ve ever been to.
Legendary Concerts in Scotland 84,lucky guy
So lucky, I discover this rare gems few years ago, and I think, this version of Bad is the best ever, dramatically, affectively. So sad, there is no video version of this concert.
To all brothers and sisters battling with addiction, this beautiful track is for you. There is hope.
My favorite song of all time. U2 managed to make it into a bottomless pit of versions so you can always find some new angles to it. Bad is immortal. Bad will be in my heart until the very end.

Like the different guitar riffs for each set of "hoo hoo"'s on each live version.

One of the most magnificent pieces of music ever written. This composition easily sits aside the works of the great masters of western art music.
It's crazy how old this song is and how it still so freakin' awesome. It still rocks like it did back then.
U2 best band of all time, in my opinion. Best band that plays live
The EP was packaged and released for the Christmas market in America.
It was actually recorded in U.S.. Video only is from Europe.
This is the best fucking U2 song to me.
Every time I hear it, I would fucking tear up...
I love all the old U2 stuff from their 1st album "Boy" to "Rattle and Hum".....so emotional, raw, and edgy.
Doesn’t get much better than this
The greatest and always will be the best band in the world
Amen to to that!
Very moving to see Greg Carroll in the video. R.I.P. ♥️
Rarely do you see a band do a live version of a song and then replicate it time and time again, but I have seen them do this live twice and watched a ton of live video versions and it is uncanny how well they do it. Fav U2 song by a mile, just perfect in every way.
the "I'm wide awaaaake" part rips my face off every time
Ich verneige mich vor der gesamten Crew von U2
allein nur für diesen 1 Videoclip, denn das ist ein
Purer Gänsehaut Riesenhit Live Gig👍👍👍👍👍👍
Adam’s Bass Is U2’s Driving Power
The Ending Is Incredible
7:11 GREG CARROLL, the roadie that was killed in 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. They met 2 months before this concert, at the Auckland (NZ) concerts. BONO wrote the lyrics to "ONE TREE HILL" in his memory.
Rest in peace.
RIP Greg Carroll, he was so dedicated
For those that knew him he was a true friend.

“We’re an Irish band we come from Dublin city Ireland. Like all cities, it has its good, and it has its bad. This is a song called Bad.”

Because I knew I remembered him saying it, I just couldn’t remember where and when.
I’m not sleeping, but I’m listening to one of the best bands in history 🎤
There was nothing like that during those days. This is such an underrated drummer and a guitar player. WTF.
I´m 56 and this song ( from another planet ), has been my favorite in the last 35 years. It´s part of the soundtrack of my life
One of the Greatest Live Songs Ever!!
this is U2s best. one of the great concert songs of all time. always blows the roof off!
Goosebumps, even in 2021. What. A. Song
Yes every time ..
Goosebumps and a lump in my throat every time I hear or see this ❤️.
YES!!!!!
EVERY TIME
Absolutely 💯
The Greatest Band of All Time. The minute I first listened to them in the mid 80's in High School they became my favorite band to this day. What's beautiful about this group is that they are still together like the Stones which is a feat rarely accomplished with artists. How many groups can say that they sound the same from studio to live. To hear the audience sing with them from every country in English is amazing. The only other bands that have impressed me in the last 20 years is Foo Fighters and Disturbed. That is what a Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is made up of. It shouldn't be made up of anyone who has picked up a microphone before.
Larry’s drums. Perfect. Just carries the tone of the song.
Best U2 song of all time, in my opinion. It marked the evolution of U2's sound and The Edge use of delay and incredible musicality. Beautiful song.
Absolutely the best! U2 never disappoints with their music.
This is U2's greatest live song
OMG !!!! What a f'ing solo !!!! Killer !!!! Congrats to a real pro !!! I would pay a bundle to see you live !!!
Sheer beauty, majestic
Joshua Tree tour...5:00am trying to get home Toronto to Hamilton. Does anyone remember? Everyone still so in love with the music and each other. It didn't matter. Magic.
What a song.
Fantastic..... just landed back in 1984
I was a very excited 18 year old we camped out for tickets for our 1st u2gig,loved this video when it was first released

This isn't just the best live performance of this song, IMO this is the best live performance of ANY song by U2...
It gives you goosebumps every time its one of the greatest songs of all time .
Video is from more than one European performance. Song track was actually recorded in U.S.
@@jude999 Was actually recorded in Birmingham, England pre Christmas 84, Nov or Dec, can't remember for sure, but def was not recorded in the U.S.
Anybody from Dublin remember this?? Every time I drive through the city I hum this . God bless "2U.......................
Edge is so much more than a delay pedal.
He use a specific plectrum and plays it the wrong way round to get his signature sound. He’s a wizard
Love it! Bono once said, "You glorify the past when the future dries up." We've witnessed 10 years of looking back. Let's move forward guys,
This song has touched my soul since 1987 , listen to it at least 1X week … identifier of my troubles , my determination, my passion , my success and failures … song hits hard every time !
Music makes life tolerable.
The one thing that has always been there when I needed someone or some thing.
Like a faithful dog, always there for you.
It's as if you've already heard the music in your heart, and then they retrieve it for you.
What a finale of The 100 with this song playing at the end, loved it!
I love this song, no matter what year it is.
It is Epic and Timeless.
It is indeed
Me too.
Eu nunca tinha ouvido esta música.
It's eternal...
I saw U2 in Glasgow, Scotland in January 1981. I knew they would be massive.
