Lyrics:
Ice, your only rivers run cold.
These city lights, they shine as silver and gold.
Dug from the night, your eyes as black as coal.
Walk on by, walk on through.
Walk till you run and don't look back
For here I am.
Carnival, the wheels fly and the colours spin through alcohol.
Red wine that punctures the skin.
Face to face in a dry and waterless place.
Walk on by, walk on through.
So sad to besiege your love oh hang on.
Stay this time, stay tonight in a lie.
I'm only asking, but I, I think you know.
Come on take me away, come on take me away
Come on take me home, home again.
And if the mountains should crumble
Or disappear into the sea
Not a tear, no not I.
Stay this time, stay tonight in a lie.
Ever after is a long time.
And if you save your love, save it all, save it all
Don't push me too far, don't push me too far.
Tonight, tonight.
I was 14 when I first heard this song, I'm 53 now and I still love it like the first day.
Me too ✋️

57 , couldn't agree more. How lucky we were to be born back then
This is probably their best song ever done. This is the U2 I miss so much.
THIS!!!!!
Listen to Moment of Surrender and live versions of Every Breaking Wave
I completely agree with you! The best
Absolutely brilliant song. Agree!
I used to obsess over this song 30 years ago. Turned in on recently-same!
I was fortunate enougj to see them during their 1985 Unforgettable Fire tour. Just hearing this one song was worth the money. Guess what the ticket cost me back then? $12.50
This tour and Joshua Tree were some of the best concerts not only of that period, but in general...
Same as me in cold Bologna in winter 1985 … and an endless night train back to my living town in Tuscany
Gorgeous and heart stopping teen experience
I had tickets for the show in my city for that tour and they had to cancel. Two years later (10/11/1987) they came back and Bono (arm on sling), apologized for missing the ‘85 show. At the end of the show I started the _”how long to sing their song…”_ chant on my side of the stadium.
Not being funny but was that expensive ?
@@legin3753 Not really. Same year, Tom Petty tickets jumped to $16.50. Highway robbery, even in the NY area, but I paid it.
This is not a pop song. It's a musical incantation that takes the listener back to the moment they first heard it.
That's nonsense!
What a way to put it 👌🏼 & you’re right too
Very poetic 🎉
OK album. Would have the verse for a more worth while recording.
Spot on. Every time I listen I'm transported back to my apartment in college, junior year. Great times. Loved the early 80s.
I honestly think the unforgettable fire was their most beautiful and underrated album
No contest.
Completely agree I thought it was better than the Joshua tree
Denis French I didn’t realize it at the time, but I sure do now.
ABSOLUTELY! A MASTERWORK!
Absolutely
You can say what you will about u2

Fique amor calcinha preta
U2 q me perdoe.

It maybe a humble opinion but it is a correct opinion

Come on you spurs n17
I was in the car as a young fella with my dad driving in the night , and heard this song on the radio with its green light shining out of the radio .
It captured my soul straight away , I’m now 47 and it still captures my soul today
Yes it brings me back to my life when I was young and out of my mind now I’m 60 and every one I ran with is gone but a couple people it’s like it was a dream
That's why I'm here!
the same. my fist dates with ex went on to this song, so it i remember its so clear
Back when they were young and hungry . War, Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree. What a run
Three of the best albums ever. With Or Without You will always be my all time favorite song of all time.
Live at Red rocks was bloody good at the time as well

War had Surrender and Two Hearts Beat as One.
I think thats their Irish era when they just let songs naturally rise from the environment. Then they went american and german and whatever. Maybe their will bring their music back home again someday.
Masterpiece. Never fails everytime you listen to it.
My words...Hypnotizing.
Can’t argue with that

Bono's vocals were stunning on this album. Listen to this till the day I die.
those moments when he goes falsetto. So much soul.
Love his vocals on this, and Once in a Lifetime with Clannad. Such power!
U2 saved me from terminal depression. Thank you.
I want to die. I'm seriuos. Please, don't only inform the cops.
I just read this. You are not alone. There is hope. Please reach out! I hope you find light to guide you out of your darkness!
U2 saved me from catching a case. Dealing w/wrong people w/mental problems.
Walk on was with me in my darkest moments, before that album, this one was my favorite
U2 Real and Positive 'Feel' helped me overcome some late adolescent early adult anxiety/depression angst issues starting out in life.
When hearing classic U2 such as this it reminds me of the dark times and makes me appreciate my struggles to come to the SUNNY side of life!
Thanks U2!!

@@jamesjackson-df1hi wonderful music, but when the band went WOKE, ehhh, i became more than slightly disappointed. i always thought of them as rising above the mainstream culture in a very idealistic sense, but alas, they have become another victim...eventually falling into the moral abyss.
My dad introduced me to U2 when I was a kid. This is his favorite song! Who else inherited U2 from his parents?
I love ❤️ U2 by myself. My parents don’t like them. I don’t know why.
By the way, we are an upcoming band who are very inspired by the music of U2. If you are interested, head over there 👈 and let us know what you think of our songs. Especially now, it is very hard for new bands to let people hear their music. Your support would help us a lot!

Definitely
This is therapy for your soul
This has always been, and still is, one of my most favourite U2 songs, l loved it way back when it was first released as a single in 1985, it sent shivers down my spine, and it still does to this day.
Same. This instantly takes me back to the winter of 1984/85. I was 14, going through a rough time since my parent’s divorce and our subsequent move from St. Louis to Boston. I’d put this in my Walkman, and lose myself in the music.
No matter how many times I hear this song I still get a chill, like I’m hearing it for the first time. My absolute favorite U2 song.
So true!
Es el mismo sentimiento que el mio..la escucho y siento que tengo 15 años nuevamente
Brian Eno seems to get U2 yo their best.
It's a beautiful masterpiece
the chill.... 7 days later 56 people died in the Bradford City fire disaster. One of my work colleague's grandparents died in their seats, another lost their sister, my best friend lost his girlfriend. She was working inside the stand on the food and drinks counter and went back in to get the money from the till. It cost her her life. Nothing will ever be more chilling than this apparent "coincidence".
This song is truly hypnotic. The combination of the lyrics and melody are both something that simply mesmerizes you. Being of the same age as the band members...this carries a unique type of bond. It is something that is very "organic"...and real. U2 has bridged so many gaps for so many years, and that simply saying they have spoken to the souls of so many generations is really not doing them proper justice. Respect....admiration...and endearment are the words that come to mind first and foremost. What a fabulous song. Such fantastic memories from hearing it, that each and every time I do listen to it, these vivid memories come to light and bring me back to a simpler time. My wish is that everyone has the same beautiful experience for themselves as well.
you're not the only one Anna ! in 1986 I was 6 years old and every Saturday night the local tv brings the same u2 videoclips among them the unforgettable fire, and the fact that all my family members were always out at that time and staying home alone watching as a kid, no one can imagine what that has left in me. Bono is the profile of my personal whatssapp account ! I had the best childhood in a human lifetime thanks to bands like U2 ! Thank you Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry !
I can give you my personal phone number and you can see for yourself my whatssapp profile ! as I said you're not the only one !

Gotta give a shout out to Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, producers extraordinaire who always get the very best out of whomever they're working with. In the case of U2 and this particular LP, and especially this song an atmospheric mood created by the strings, horns, and of course U2's incredible words and music that transcend time and space making it relevant still almost 40 years on.

This song is a masterpiece and I could listen to U2 all day long. I am only 16 years old, but because of my dad I listen to them for my entire life and I am so thankful for their music which reminds me of good old times. Greatest song ever recorded. Its like a dream caught on tape
What a brilliant description! I agree.....the layering of sounds and vocals.....it is as haunting as it is uplifting.....the juxtaposition of the violins and the drums is hypnotic. I remember hearing it on the radio and literally fell in. love at first chord lol! Did you happen to see the video of the main of this whole album? I got to say that we had tons of great songs in the 80's. Every week a brilliant song was released back then.
I love this song! Bono’s voice is beautiful and full of emotion 💟
I was not a U2 fan until July 13, 1985 when I Watched Live Aid and saw Bono holding the world in the palm of his hand as he sang “Bad”. Seeing him go off the stage and down to the audience to dance with a fan was amazing. Adam, Larry and Edge just kept playing, looking like they didn’t know when, if ever, Bono would return. I became a lifelong fan that day and soon discovered “The Unforgettable Fire”. Watching U2 perform this song in 2009 in Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts was fantastic! I love these Irishmen. Slainte!
I remember in '86 my freshman year of college I found a cassette tape of this album at work that someone had left there. I started listening to it at work, but then no one claimed it, so soon I would take it with me everywhere I went. I became obsessed with this beautiful masterpiece of an album. I lived in a city and would walk everywhere - as soon as I walked outside, I would hit play on my Walkman and "A Sort of Homecoming" would start...It felt like I was walking in step with the music. It was like my soundtrack.
Vivid description - and it does have that kind of rhythm
Late 80s-ish me and my oldest sister checked this album out of the library, the vinyl! I taped it and listened to it for years, even with the gaps where I accidentally hit the record button. It's funny how when I hear this song, which I love so much, my mind drops in those gaps from my old tape. Love your memory, reminded me of that.
@@rommelbatu46 I feel this so hard. It's those imperfections in things that take us back or give us feeling. Sadly, I fear that perfections of auto tune and all the other AI enhancement of "music" will make "mistakes" like this a thing of the past. So sad, because it's these things that make listening to music so interesting and heartfelt. I just love what you are describing here so much.

"And if the mountains should crumble or disappear into the sea. Not a tear. No, not I." Such a poingant statement yet said with such beautiful sadness that it brings a tear to the eye. It's a spectacular, hauntingly brillaint masterpiece of a song. Arguably one of the bands all-time best!

This. This was it. Still is. The Edge on absolute fire. Bono still with a voice. Larry solid as a rock(star). Adam the drive forward. And Brian Eno flexed his wings, muscles ripping, soaring. Those strings.

Красиво сказано и Верно!

Bono said that Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois the producers of this album provided U2 with an art school education while they helped make this album. You can hear Eno's footprint in this song as it has an ethereal echo to it. You can hear Lanois's footprint with the masterful blending of strings and traditional rock instruments. Finally you can hear U2s footprint in the raw emotion of their instruments and Bono's steam of consciousness lyrics. "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire" are neck and neck, their best albums lyrically and musically. Both albums are loaded with songs that most bands can only dream of releasing. That being said, "A Sort Of Homecoming" and "The Unforgettable Fire" are quite possibly their best 1/2 punch of a single album... brilliant in every way possible.🎶🖤🙏🏾🖤🎶
Joshua Tree is U2’s masterclass. But every U2 album is amazing
Well said, these 2 albums were made before they became global superstars. They were angry young men then as evidenced by 'refugee' and 'pride'
The Unforgettable Fire...what an exquisite name for an album.
Sometimes you forget how brilliant U2 are. They have been in my life from day one, and at 52 they still are. I needed U2 tonight for some strange reason, and they never let me down.
This track will do nicely to remind me of who I am, and how far I have come in life.👍🏾
you're very welcome. 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Ice, your only rivers run cold. These city lights, they shine as silver and gold. Dug from the night, your eyes as black as coal
Pure poetry...
with much respect for what would follow, this album is U2 at their most beautiful.
The whole album is like looking at a beautiful landscape through a camera with fresh raindrops on the lens .. slightly blurry, slightly out of focus, which makes it all the more mysterious, interesting and beautiful.
This album is a masterpiece and a shining example of how U2 was always evolving. Love this song! Love U2!!
So atmospheric, Bono’s vocals and the epic production make this song their best work imao.
I got this song in my head on the day that my father passed the way in 1987. For years I was not able to listen to this song because my memories were to painful. This song always makes my emotional. U2's best song ever!
One of the best songs ever written
without a doubt of the 5 best songs of U2, beautiful melody and lyrics♥️
Bono and its young powerful voice...this is a masterpiece, I've been listening to this song for years and it still makes me shiver❤
One of my favorites songs of U2. I was fortunate to see them live twice in the 80s and 90s.
My buddy and I saw these guys in Toronto when they first came over to Canada to promote BOY and we walked out of that concert and said to each other.....WOW!!!! this band is going to be huge. Sure enough they were. BOY is still my favourite album but Unforgettable Fire is a close second. I'm 66 now and I still love U2.
@Marks Wood Hello Mark. Thank-you for the lovely comment. I hope you're well, I'm doing just fine. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! to you as well. All the best mate.

I loved this era of U2!!! Unforgettable Fire is an amazing album.
This song made me a U2 fan forever. It came on the radio, in a time when Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet were hot and I was totally blown away by how different and magnificent this song was and is.
Me either... ☺ I understand you so well
vas tu ces dernières semaines je n'est vécu que des semaines d'angoisses.
layer after layer of magnificence, lyrical, musical, instrumental, emotional, in the end for an overwhelming experience that U2 never topped
One of the most underrated album in the music history...
For a band to stay together all this time & produce songs - albums that are timeless - glad to say I've saw them live & to come from this wee island of ours - gives me a great source of Pride (in the name of love)
