- U2 performing at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Everybody forgets that U2 played SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY in the most important ENGLISH STADIUM. They have all my respect because it's very tough for an Irish sing this song in the centre of England
I'm English and please believe me most English people know Sunday Bloody Sunday was Barbaric. Innocent civilians were killed by British soldiers. It should never have happened and may it never happen again. The lyrics in this song is very clear, it's not about taking sides but calling for peace, "I won't heed the battle call, it's puts my back against the wall".

Well, it's not a separatist song. It's just about an end to the violence really. It doesn't take sides.

I was there... at Wembley Stadium that day... the concert exploded with U2's incredible set and we figured - hands down - that was gonna be best set of the day by a mile... then QUEEN happened... one of THE best days EVER!!! ♥

Live Aid was massive for two bands in particular..U2 and Queen. For U2 it marked the first true worldwide exposure that would propel them up to the absolute top. For Queen, it marked a comeback from a slightly stalled career, to being universally acclaimed as the best live act in the world. U2 actually thought the performance had been a disaster, as Bono, in an attempt to get closer to the crowd, jumped off the stage and stayed down at crowd level for six minutes during the second song ‘Bad’, which meant they didn’t have time to perform ‘Pride’ which was their current single. That’s why he stomps off at the end of the song..he’s so upset that he’s wrecked’ the bands big moment! Of course, to us it just looked like pure drama and showmanship and went down as one of the days most iconic images…which in turn, just blew up their live reputation even more.
I have to say while we were watching this unfold I'd have preferred they had done bad as they did.
When he jumped down and actually interacted with the girls from the crowd Wembley absolute blew up. Not many other artists on that level done as Bono did.
I've said before many many people think their Under A Blood Red Sky performance was their best live.
For many of us who love U2 this was their best ever, especially with Bad.

And for Phil Collins to play with Led Zeppelin was a total blast. Especially ruining their set !
Bono saved the life of a young lady who was being crushed in the crowd. The one he dances with before returning to the stage.
Bono didn't jump down to just get closer, he jumped down to assist a woman who was being crushed in the front row. He got her over the rail and danced with her for a brief moment before returning to the stage.
Pride (in the name of love) wasn't their current single at the time... it was The unforgettable fire which went top 5 about that time
I was at this concert and after U2 finished their set I turned to a guy sitting next to me and said, "that's a pretty good band. Do you know who they are?" He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "That's U2, man!" The next day U2 was one of the biggest bands in the world.

I remember my high school buddy was over at my home. He decided to listen to what was on my generic "walkman". "Church music? You listen to church music? Seriously?" It was the beggining of "Where the Streets Have no Name". I answered, "That's U2!" Him: "What's U2?" Three months later we were at the biggest rock concert either had ever been to - U2 touring the Joshua Tree.

I'm Brazilian, my father watched Live Aid in 1985 through television at a store in the mall of his hometown, the only with signal to the broadcast. He said about 40 people piled up close to each other to get a glimpse of the event and it was U2 opening for Dire Straits and then Queen, and that everyone wanted to sing and dance but there wasn't enough space inside for that so they all just smiled and sung most of the songs together. I hate not being alive at the time. Such a better, slower-paced life with the absolute best musicians to ever exist. I envy everyone who witnessed the 80s

I’m Canadian, and like your father watched a lot of the concert through a store window in a mall. It was almost standing room only in front of the TV. I’m a musician and my three band mates and myself were almost late for a gig at a local club. We eventually tore our selves away watching Freddy blow the crowd away. Probably one of the best concerts of all time

Listen to the lyrics "I won't heed the battle call, it puts my back up against the wall". This is not a war song or a rebel song. It does quite rightly condemn what happened on Sunday Bloody Sunday. Innocent civilians were shot dead by British soldiers. It was barbaric and should not have happened and may it never happen again. This song is not about taking sides but calling for peace.

Any time is a good time to start a voyage of discovery when it comes to the music of U2. Such a brilliant band with so many good songs. Their 90's music is my favourite as it is more experimental however some of their 80's music is legendary.

They had a confidence, determination, clearly going to the top. Different from anybody else that day. From directing the stage cameras to leaving the stage. Queen (a superb performance) were more - look what we have done - and U2 were - look what we're going to do. One of the rare days the musical time continuum met head on.

What makes them different from other bands is they stayed true to their roots. They still have the same members and they still work with the same team and they still act like normal people (albeit very wealthy and famous normal people)

I saw them at a free concert in a Dublin park around '83, and my then boyfriend's band supported them at another concert, it was all very local, but there was an excitement about them, i think people could feel they were special and were going to be really big. There were hundreds of bands in Dublin then but they stood out.
THIS is the moment Live Aid came alive. This performance is just blistering passion. A rawness and power which was unmatched on that incredible day.

I remember this day vividly. Watched the concert on an 8 foot C-Band dish on my parents house. The feed went out for US during WHO, but I didn't lose the feed. Queen was the best performance that day- and of all time. U2 great- they came of age at this show. BUT- Queen was the show.
This is my battle song. The one I turn to when there's a fight on my hands. It helped me recover from Anorexia. I used to run and not eat...well, I stood to lose something precious to me unless I recovered...I was going to lose my place at drama school unless I put on weight. I stopped not eating but carried on running and this song was what I'd listen to on my walkman. It genuinely inspired me to fight the illness and eat after I got home from each run. I put on muscle after that...and kept my place.

I remember being 13 that summer, watching this thing all day long on TV. I was so excited when the day progressed to U2 and they played this.

Indeed. And rest in peace to all of the civilians from the other side of the divide who were blown to pieces by IRA or INLA bombs, or shot simply for being a protestant / Unionist / Loyalist. Sunday Bloody Sunday is a song about peace - not division. There was a very clear reason for saying "This is not a rebel song." Atrocities were committed by both sides and by the security forces. As Irish people we don't get to say Bloody Sunday was an appalling atrocity while at the same time saying that the bombing in Omagh was a justifiable act of war. RIP to all of the victims of the troubles.

Someone has most likely already mentioned it but the professionalism at all levels here is incredible, from both the band and the stage crew. I mean, man, look at that maneuver between 4:00 and 4:10 when Bono walks back up to the stage. There's one guy on the landing just below gathering his mic cable and tossing it back up onto the stage while a second stagehand collects the remaining slack and pulls it up and over not only a mic stand but also up and over another band member! It's a small thing but you can tell that everyone, EVERYONE is firing on all cylinders here. Bravo!

Greg Carroll, Bono`s PA, extremely important guy during their shows. Jumped and run after Bono to make his show as smooth as possible. Sadly made a fatal bike accident a year later.

Love U2 and was a fan before this beautiful event as well as all the U2 fans there. I know so many are saying the Queen was thee band of this concert but all of the bands did their best and I am grateful to all of them for giving a voice to a very important cause. Good on everyone who showed up!

I watched this concert when I was 16. The eighties will always have some of the best music ever. It was a great time to be a teenager. Still love U2 . Quenn definitely stole the show though no one was as great of a front man (other than Bon Scott) as Freddy!

U2 expressed many voices and heart felt feeling in Ireland. Unfortunately they where seen as outsiders but each one of them was always approachable. But as a boy in Dublin int the 80s I was proud and respectful of them and I love them for all the things they have done around the world. Thank you for being better than me.
I saw U2 live at Twickenham Joshua tree tour. Was my first concert as a 16 year old, and the best I've been to. Loved it, never forget it.

I was a 14 year old kid in 1985, I remember watching Live Aid beginning to end on Canada's MTV, Much Music. The only U2 song I'd ever heard to that point was Pride ( In The Name Of Love). When I saw U2s performance that day, I knew just how amazingly HUGE this band was going to become! Theirs and Queen were the stand out performances of that day! 2 bands at the top of thir game

Im flipping back and forth between Queens and U2s at Live Aid and as visceral as U2's is there is absolutely no comparison. Queens performance at Live Aid was fundamentally at another level. Freddie's connection to the audience and their reaction to him and their songs is mythical. Queen was just flawless.
But at this point U2 were less well known - they weren't the global iconic band like they are now, this catapulted them. Whereas Queen were well established global superstars.
@@vickywardle9727 yeah well they were pretty expected in this concert, you can see like 5-6 flags, cartels with U2 and that kind of stuff in other bands/artists performances and in this one meanwhile you can only see like 1 cartel with "Queen works" only in Queen's performance, so that makes me think they wanted U2 more to perform than Queen. 🤷🏻♀️
Without doubt. Queen, however, did have the advantage of having an established fan base. Plus the fact they were playing at home. U2 at that time were virtually unknown. Anyhow, 'Chicken or egg.' What we did get on that day, was a masterclass on live performance and showmanship . Oh, and all that. Without lip sync.

I don’t think one is better than the other. They’re just representative of what those bands - or more specifically leading men - were at that time. Queen had secretly rehearsed their set for a week down to the exact second (and thank god they did, absolutely brilliant). U2 had more of a traditional “set” planned where Bono (before he was “Bono”) completely improvised and made a rock history moment out of it (and yes, rescued that young lady in the process). What makes both so great is how true they were to the artists and how much of a contrast they were in how to work a crowd. Equally brilliant and memorable.

My first concert was at Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Pa seeing what would turn out to be the biggest band of the last 30 plus years. That band was U2. I’ve been a fan ever since.
I miss the 80s and I wasn’t even born till long afterwards.
Speechless. After all these years. Tears running down my eyes. I could really say that I walked with giants.
I was at Nou Camp in Barcelona during the 360° Tour. This song came and all of a sudden, all the attendance started singing Sunday Bloody Sunday, almost 90000 people singing along - me included, of course -. Bono wasn’t singing, the crowd did it all. I still remember it with goosebumps down my spine as one of the best experiences I’ve been through in a live performance.
The day before U2 really became famous. The band had some bite, they seemed to sense that what they were about to do, Joshua tree album, major sales worldwide, stadiums tours, were just around the corner. Yes, they had a few hits before this performance, but nothing compared to what came after. Realising that they stood at that moment in time just before their world erupted.
Plus Bono had a mullet :)
I think U2 showed the world their energy, their passion and ability at this concert....being seen by a billion people (approximately) wouldn't have hurt though!!

U2 WAS so much better than Queen. Queen was then at that time. U2 WAS ahead their time. Showing a glimpse at the early-mid 90s. Early-mid 90s , by far best period in music. Had depth/danger/originality.
@@bellahoughton84 look I’m a big U2 fan since the early days but it was well regarded that Queen was the highlight of the day in both the UK and the US. But U2 was superb.
